So I just got out of hospital after having grommets put in my ears. They've been blocked up for a good few months now and I've had completely forgotten how loud everything actually is. The noise of, well, everything is so much louder than I remember it. I can't begin to imagine how loud I've been playing my MP3 player, or hell even my TV.
So anyone else ever had grommets? I feel so fresh! Got these in for 9 months before they fall out on their own.

I don't even know what a grommet is but shit, if it will improve my hearing then it sounds (what?) like it could help me. You get this from your doctor or was this something you bought at a pharmacy?

Oh. Okay, these might not be what you think. You ever had your ears so full up with fluid that you can't hear properly? I'm quite unfortunate that when I get a cold/flu most of the fluid in my sinus seems to eventually settle down my ears. Besides getting your ears drained, the other option is grommets. A grommet is like a tiny tube that they put in your ear to help drain away the fluid. They stay in there for like, 9 months or so to help keep the passage open. So basically my hearing is like it's always been, it's just my hearing has been impared for so long I've forgotten what normal sound, sounds like.

My great uncle didn't have fluid problems, he just never cleaned his ears, and couldn't hear for anything. He went to the doctor, and the doctor removed huge plugs of wax from his ears.
When he got home, he was hearing stuff his wife couldn't even hear, but of course it was strange for him, he didn't realize how loud the TV was until he had that done.
So yeah, it is a feeling like a superpower when you start hearing things you normally should, but can't because of health reasons.

Many years ago, my ears were so full of wax I could barely hear anything. I had them vaccuumed out, and my experience was just like you're experiencing. Everything is SO LOUD. even silence.

Yeah, turns out that just makes the wax all squishy and it runs back into your ear canal. Oops.

I get ear infections in my right ear all the time. The problem with the ear infection is that since I have it ALL THE TIME my ears are always full of nasty junk. But sometimes when the ear canal get clear my hearing becomes AMAZING. It's not as cool as it sounds, because it is so loud that it hurts my ear and gives me a head-ache. Sometimes...I feel bad for daredevil.

So what is the proper way to clean your ears? Using a Q-Tip after a shower?

I should get my ears flushed. Lately they've been wet with ear wax; I suspect it's from enclosed headphones/in-proper use of the Q-tips (It feels nice when its cleans your ears so its hard not too).

After hearing all this I'm considering getting my ears checked as well. Over the past months I've had to increase the volume (tv/psp/music) gradually.

you shouldn't use qtips at all. it just pushes the wax in.
picking the earwax with my fingers has always worked for me... although this girl in grade 7 made fun of me for it... fuck her.

So the Qtip business has been fucking us over by making a product who's primary use is actually the worst possible thing you could do to your ears for decades?
This is a disturbing revelation. : [

i would imagine its the same thing as having "tubes" put in your ears here in the states
i had it done when i was little 3 times for the same thing having fluid in the ears
and they fall out 8-10 months later
that was a long ass time ago tho lol

Make sure after 9 months you go to the ENT and check to see if they have indeed fallen out.
I had some in 6th grade, and for a while it was okay, but I started slowly losing hearing again, and by 9th grade I couldn't hear much at all, so I went to get my ears checked and cleaned out, and the grommets were still in my ears, causing a tremendous build-up of wax and whatnot. x_x

According to the Army I have 0 db hearing (perfect) which is basically the equivalent of 20/20 vision. I hear every fucking thing. I can separate sounds and make out a conversation on the other side of the room when I really want to. When I was little, about 5, I had to get my ears cleaned. I had wax like a muhfucker and couldn't hear shit most times. My mom thought I was ignoring her until my dad started rationalizing and figured it out. Once that was cleaned I have never had that much wax buildup since, not were even close.

You guys should just get your ears flushed out at the doctors every so often (I get it done about every 18 months or so). It makes an AMAZING difference between what you can hear after you get all that gunk out of your ears.
Heh, my brother had to use grommets for quite a while, I heard it helped him a lot though.
Grats man, now go play some katamari or hit up a rave/play a trance mix.

I have an ear related horror story. I was at the doc for a checkup and he said I had some wax built up, so he said he'd clean them for me. He squirts a shitload of water in my left ear so hard that it hurt but it got the wax out. Then he does the right ear and he freaking bursts my ear drum. I wanted to kill that fucker. Needless to say I got him to prescribe me some strong pain meds and was in a horrible mood for the rest of the day.

That's what my doc prescribed. She gave me a tube syringe and some peroxide and told me to have at it. Works like a charm.

I know what you mean. I had my ears COMPLETELY cleaned and I could hear the tumblers in locks for a week. Everything sounds completely crystal clear.

there are these ear cleaners where its basically toothpick width and has like a small spoon shape scoop in the end. Used that a couple of times, but felt very uncomfortable since there is no cotton padding for ur inner ears, u need to scoop out all the wax, and i was always afraid to go too far in.

Haha, same shit happened to except I was slightly older when I had my ears cleaned (more like 7 or something).
Thing is, in order for me to hear before the cleaned up wax, I had to keep popping my ears by closing in my nose and breathing in hard to pop my ears.
Lately tho, for the past couple of years I've been having to pop my ears again (but not using the same method) every so many minutes... and I don't know why.
Some days I never have to pop my ears, others I have to about every 40 mins or so.
Strange... ah...
