Comedian George Carlin dies at 71
Anti-Establishment icon gained fame with his ‘Filthy Words’ routine

BREAKING NEWS
updated 1 hour, 47 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES - Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero famed for his routines about drugs and dirty words, died of heart failure at a Los Angeles-area hospital Sunday, a spokesman said. He was was 71.

Carlin, who had a history of heart problems, died at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica about 6 p.m. PT after being admitted earlier in the afternoon for chest pains, spokesman Jeff Abraham told Reuters.

Known for his edgy, provocative material, Carlin achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his "Filthy Words" routine ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court.

R.I.P George. You will be missed.

Its weird tho because all these "R.I.P. ___" threads seem so depressing, you should be happy for the man. No more suffering on earth. For Carlin himself, it makes no difference how we feel about him at this point. However, we as a civilization lost someone important to our culture and development in recent history, so I'd say it's natural to feel some sorrow over his death. He stood up to the establishment and defended our right to speak our thoughts freely, and did a damn hilarious job of it.

I hope you meant that as a compliment.

George Carlin is the best. He taught me what funny was.

"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately." - George Carlin

A part of me is intensely sad, but the rest of me feels like being upset is doing him a disservice. He worked his whole life to make people laugh, and I can't imagine he would want any different once he was done working.

Everyone tip their hats to one of the greatest to pace the stage, and one of the best to even touch a mic.

The last of the comedy holy trinity (along with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor) is dead. Things won't be the same without him.

I suggest everyone try to find "George Carlin: 40 Years in Comedy" from 1997 to see just how timeless his material is and how reverent other comics are of him.

How true.

This is the saddest death for me, tying with Arthur C.Clarke. Both had different employments, but were masters of their domain.

One thing that always made me in awe of George Carlin was just how quick-witted and artful he was in his craft. The delivery of his jokes and the buildup had perfect comedic timing rarely seen today, or ever.

I think I'll have to devote my day to watching all of his videos, because I know now I won't be seeing anymore acts in the future.:shake::crybaby:

Life is Worth Losing:

I look at it this way... For centuries now, man has done everything he can to destroy, defile, and interfere with nature: clear-cutting forests, strip-mining mountains, poisoning the atmosphere, over-fishing the oceans, polluting the rivers and lakes, destroying wetlands and aquifers... so when nature strikes back, and smacks him on the head and kicks him in the nuts, I enjoy that. I have absolutely no sympathy for human beings whatsoever. None. And no matter what kind of problem humans are facing, whether it's natural or man-made, I always hope it gets worse.

I think it is strange that no one has yet to say "my thoughts and prayers are with the family"

I think if someone said that, Carlin would come back from the dead and beat them down for including God in his family.

His wife died in 97.

His first wife did; they mention his second wife at the end of the article.

I wonder if he really wanted to be blown up when he died. Or thrown out of a plane just left to rot where he landed.

Yeah, I was just about to say...

If someone would be willing to sacrifice themselves like that, I'm sure they'd be called heroes by everyone here.

I'd do it myself, but I already preordered my tickets to his first show back.

I seriously will miss his comedy and his guidance.

...

richard pryor for me...george comes second.

Alright... in the spirit of Carlin, I'm going to go ahead and say it: the only reasons anyone ever says this is because Pryor was black, and because Pryor died first. Now, maybe a person might like Pryor more because they relate to his material even more closely than the more general population stuff Carlin did. I can understand that. But as a skillful, well-rounded performer, Carlin had every aspect of standup comedy down. Nobody was/is in his league.

there are certain comedians you don't compare to each other, especially out of respect for their talents. carlin, pryor, murphy, bruce, kinnison...these people are gods of stand up and rating one higher than the other is futile. i'd add hicks to that list, but that's a personal choice...

I'm glad I'm not the only one around here that remembers Sam, Robin Harris would have been big too but he died right before he was about to blow up same as Sam.

Before I begin, I'll make it known now that Pryor was, is and always will be #1.

Carlin was the shit and he was the ultimate "realistic" comedian, Carlin is what Sienfield tried to be but in a clean way and IMO failed epicly.

But to keep it real, Outside of his last HBO Special where he wore all black and looked REALLY old, all of his HBO shows were more of the same ala Katt Williams.

Comedy has hope if Robin Williams did more stand up and Katt would quit recycling shit.

Ever wonder where all the fresh talen is?, It's hard as fuck to get into Comedy now (take it from me - f'real) We need another Def Jam (not this bullshit where Mike Epps unfunny ass is hosting)

Def Jam opened so many fucking doors and gave us damn 20 yrs. worth of good comedians.

(Martin Lawrence, Dave Chappelle, Chris Tucker, D.L. Hugley, Bernie Mac, the list goes on and on)

R.I.P. to the realist motherfucker that gave the "Other View" of things.

Ironically, I just started giving Carlin's material a second chance this weekend after not really feeling his style a few years ago. It's funny how a few years can reshape opinion-- mine-- and sad that he kicked the bucket so suddenly.

may that raunchy old cynic RIP

i disagree and think you should watch carlin's set on euphemisms

 While, I agree with you.. I was just saying something more respectable would be appropriate.
But then again, when I think about it.. the title probably isn't far off from what it should be.
