View Full Version : Do you replay games after completing them?

What is the attraction of playing a game you've already finished? You've seen all the plot twists and gameplay innovations. You've already mastered the patterns, strats and tricks. So why do people go back to something they have already experienced and taken enjoyment from? Like sex and drugs, it's never going to be as good as your first time.

I personally NEVER touch a game after I've completed it. I'll play through a game until i get stuck or frustrated, then look up a FAQ. I make sure I get ALL secret items/bosses/whatever on my one and only playthrough. Some people think looking at FAQ on your first playthrough = fail, but I get bored of a game as soon as it is finished, so there's no chance of my going back to a game once the final boss is beaten.

The obvious exception are multiplayer games, especially sports and fighting ones. But once the single player mode is done, they only come out for when friends come round or online play. I might have to few rounds of CVS2 or alpha 3 to keep my hand in, but apart form that they are gathering dust with the rest of my game collection.

So for those people who say "I loved the game so much, I'm going to play it again", what do you gain form it? What is the motivation?

Snip.....strange font

When I was 15 - 20 ish I used to put alot of time into games to get all the secrets, endings, max out characters, etc. It probably started with Xenogears when I wanted to see the limit breaks of all my characters, even Billy's:rolleyes: Then Super Mario 64 collecting all 120 stars to meet Yoshi, why the fuck would he wait on a roof to meet you? No wonder dinosaurs are extinct. Rare took a lot of my free time and was notorious for collecting all special items to see secret shit, like with Banjo Kazooie and those damn puzzle pieces to see the preview of the next game or Donkey Kong 64 to see that stupid rap ending:lol:

The game which had the most replay for me was FFX, I love that game so much. I got every infinity weapon unlocked and learned just about all the moves/magic/techniques for my party via the broken sphere system. Also collecting all those monsters for Cid's creations where he'd make a beast who'd kill your entire party in one hit:bluu: Probably spent over 200 hours in that game easily, but when Zelda Wind Waker came around it was the first RPG/Game where I didn't get everything and it's been a steady decline since.

Now I get bored with 360 games I play on my PC real quick (Assasian's Creed, Bioshock, Marvel:UA, etc.) and don't even complete them, what's wrong with me:xeye:

I like games that offer things to do after you've beaten the game once. That is more important to me than playing some 60+-hour game.

No I don't...why not...because it can never hold my attention. I typicallyu play thru a game on normal difficulty...I'm not a z0mg hardest only type kinda guy. There have been a few games where I'l lcrank it up after I beat it, buyt typically 'their' definition of hard is you just take more damage and do less...so I quickly get bored. Its why I like fighting games...

FFX? Man I played through that so many times... I must have had over 500 hours on that game. I kept trying to improve my time on how long it took for me to beat the game while doing all of the sidequests.

Another title was DMC3. I had the original. Clocked in over 100 hours on that. Then got DMC3:SE. Clocked in 100 hours on Vergil's file and Dante's file and still haven't beaten the game with Vergil. Another hack and slash was Shinobi, I know I have over 100 hours playing that game especially when it can be beaten in under 4 hours. I got a couple hundred hours on Star Ocean 3 as well.

Older titles I can play through and not get bored, especially Secret of Mana. For me if there is say a new game+ mode I'll play through it or if I know I missed some stuff, but some games I just feel "meh" towards when it comes to replays.

Ghostal

Absolutely I do.
It really lies in the type of game it is.
Metal Gear Solid 4 has ridiculous amounts of stuff to unlock post-completion.
I've already played through 5 times since it's release and that's with little time on my hands. It is truly an enjoyable playthrough each time.

Valkyrie Profile is another.
I'm on my 80th+ speedrun of Seraphic Gate and always try new character combinations and such. Badrach/Valkyrie/Grey/Jun is too serious.
That for me has a lot of replay value.

I'm not entirely sure what sorts of games you play but they must be fairly dull for you to never want to touch them again once you play through them.
I can understand if you've already replayed it 3+ times, then it gets fairly bland, but to never want to play through it again is just odd.

I wish I could have a count of how many times I've beaten all the MMX, BOFIII, and LTTP.
Despite it never being quite the same experience since I know what happens, it's always fun to go back through it. As far as BOF III goes, it's a storyline thing. The MMX series is a matter of timing myself and see if I can beat the whole game faster. LTTP is simply because it remains my #1 game ever.

Yo, that's crazy because it was pretty much exactly the same for me. I prided myself on getting everything and I wouldn't quit until i had. Then wind waker came out and I lost interest. I don't even think i beat the game.

I have enough problems finishing, much less replaying games man.Only games I've finished in the past 5 years have been the .hack// games, they're short fast paced rpgs.Big games that take forever to get into rarely hold my attention(and even if they do I never finish them) I've become a very casual gamer :shake:

I can't speak for OP, but for me...

If I know the storyline, whats the point of progressing for that purpose...
If I've figured out how to beat the bosses already...I'm not going to learn anything new...maybe another way but I already have another way...
Why try to colelct/get everything, esepcially if you find out 'how' by looking it up? there is no reason to try unlocking this or that if your reading it on a FAQ...
And I also have an extremely short attention span...I don't even watch movies twice...whats the point you already know the storyline and have seen it...
Harder difficulties are typically just monotonous...instead of adding new 'strategy' you simply can't get hit as much or have to hit more...
In RPGs you end up having to do the STUPIDEST SHIT to unlock something...z0mg fight 250 fights with the cursed shield to unlock the paladin shield! which is outdone anyway buy a fire shield and merton! By the time you unlock some of the best shit in alot of games you've already conquered it...there is no benefit...

Or z0mg there is the awesome boss thats harder than the last boss! Well you end up looking up how to beat him off some FAQ, and find out its just insane leveling up of some particular power/broken combo/whatever to beat him. Watch Yuffie get hit once and completley decimate the underwater monster z0mg!

So sorry, but its a waste of time IMO to go back and replay games. I played Halo 3 for a total of like 10 hours. I'd resell it but it aint worth shit. Its why games like GTA4 and NGII I'm just waiting till its a greatest hit before I 'waste' 60 bux for something that once I beat I'll prolly nver play again.

FFX was too good, I kinda wanna play it again, damn thread. I forgot to mention how godlike I was in blitzball:wonder:

Blitzball was the shit.. I played the HELL outa that game. FFX was mad fun, but as like all the recent FF games it just gets too easy.. You find ONE good powerleveling spot and you can jack your characters up so high the entire difficulty of the game is removed.

I think it was FF8 or 9 that had that Sliding difficulty scale... which was cool, except at high levels it didn't matter and you STILL raped everything. Maybe it's just that at my age I LOOK for these spots to overpower my chars and it ruins all the fun... but after I do that shit there's just no real reason to play it again.

Now if we wanna talk about shit like Bionic Commando and Megaman and Strider and shit like that.. FUCK YEA i played them again.. and again... and again.. But any game that takes longer than 20 hours of nonstop playing to beat? .... No thanks.. Imma do it right the FIRST time hehe... (Although I'll admit for nostalgias sake i've played Chrono Trigger again recently.. but thats YEARS after the original playthrough.)

FFX sucked(obvious bait. If you take it, you're dumb).

Anyway, I played through Uncharted 6 times already. So yes, I do keep playing my games after I complete them. Depends on the fun factor, too. It all depends on time also.

The FF series has gone downhill for me, I was trying to get into 12, but the whack battle system and other aspects just didn't interest me. I stopped at were the rabbit girl with the C cups rides in on the hover bike and rescues you and the stage actor:shrug:. The graphics are top tier though for PS2.

I get the urge to replay Super Mario Rpg once every year or so. Good thing I found the rom since forever ago. I don't know how it is now, but back in the day it was nearly impossible to find a working Super Mario RPG rom. Also for some reason, Street Fighter Alpha 2 never seemed to work either.

Strange.

Your options on the poll suck. Yes I replay games, but no it's not because it's boring or that I have no new games to play. Replaying a good game is just fun... I clocked well over 200 hours on the original DMC3, and still got the SE and was still in awe of how incredible the combat engine was. Plus, sometimes you pick up on new things you didn't realize last time you were playing a game. Little story elements, some small secret room, a better way to defeat a boss... it's always fun to discover new things like that. Perfecting your execution on a game can feel pretty good too. I S-ranked all of the levels in both Sonic Rush games, even though it didn't unlock anything. It was just a fun challenge to really push my ability to play the game.

FF has gone way downhill for me, 9 was great I think (I'm in the minority on that I know), but after I just felt "ugh" towards the rest.

Also another reason to replay through games is for alternate endings a la Clock Tower.

I kinda recently got back into non-fighting games, since I see the scene collapsing pretty badly or at least for 2-D fighters--so when I complete games I go back through them at least once or twice. I somehow managed to beat MGS4 pretty quickly without giving it too much gametime so I'll probably go through it again at some point.

ffx was not dumb deathscythe! but i tried to replay it once and gave up at the beach with wakka and the team.

halo 3, cod 4, mgs 4, all had great multiple playthroughs ssbb i think people wanted to go through that shit once and thats it haha. keep your stickers!! i'm was playing gta4 to see the different endings up until mgs4 came out so...yea man do what you wanna do. Play em once and enjoy them the first time or play them over and over trying different ways to complete them. People have the same idea with movies - "what? i've already seen scarface why would I want to see it again" while others (like me) like watching a movie over and over.

shit to this day i randomly pick up einhander for full playthroughs.

These days, there are too many games on the queue, so I usually don't have time to replay too much. I'll do the post-game extra stuff and unlock whatever is immediately unlockable and play around with that stuff, but usually, I'll move onto the next game since there's always a new game on my queue.

Back then though when there wasn't such a build up of new games (mainly because of having infinite amount of free time as a kid), I played Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2 over and over and over again and never got sick of it because the dialog was the best.

I used to (Chronno Trigger, Secret of Mana, few others) but not anymore. I hardly even complete them in the first place. :/

For me, it depends on the game (as well as whether or not I like it, but let's just assume I do). I'll always try to get everything on my first run, though I usually end up with like 99% because I don't use guides or anything, and then, if it's an action game like DMC or MGS, I'll play it again almost immediately. If it's an RPG, I'll probably wait a few years (I replayed SaGa Frontier 2 on my PS3 a few months back, but it's been almost 10 years since I last played it, and I will revisit Final Fantasy Legend II every couple of years). Also, if I have nothing else to play, I'll probably revisit old stuff (but with Blu-ray now, I just watch movies).

I'll be honest, though. If I owned a 360, I would be a massive Achievement whore. I'm almost glad there's no PS3 equivalent (although one is coming soon, so I'll be earning those fuckin' Accomplishments soon enough).

I rarely buy games anymore simply because I know I'll play most of them once and never play them again.

There are alot of old titles I enjoy and play often, most of which are fighting games, and there is a fair list of RPGs I play either once or twice a year.

Granted, the games I own I really love and play often.

Gaming is too expensive these days to go out and blow money one something I'll only play once.

I was never one to have to complete the game in its entirety, unless I really enjoy the game. Otherwise, fuck it.

Don't really have a choice. I always compliment a game I'm currently playing with a couple of old school titles to keep focus. Mainly when it comes to be drought time in the industry that is really when revising old stuff becomes necessity. But sometimes I get the random bug after talking to a friend, watching a vid, or reading responses here on the boards. Shit, last night caught myself playing Dream Mix TV. That game doesn't suck like I once thought it did. The only game I catch myself replaying all the time is Streets of Rage 2. Just something about that game that keeps me coming back for more even though I've played that game in every way that I can imagine.

I will go back to a game content and difficulty depending. If the new game+ is an RPG, that has enemies that grow stronger once you beat it, then, yeah bring it. I like would like to do it again because I like a challenge. I want to get stuck while I'm getting every sort of item here. If I kill the first boss, with one hit, during the second play-through, then I will not be inclined to take her on again. Hell, I'd just drop the controller and turn the game off.

Vagrant Story's version of the new game+ turned me off. That boss incident happened to me. Even though I could have ignored it and got all the bonus battles done, I couldn't get over that.

Tactics Ogre:KoL and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance are my go-back games nowadays. I've probably done everything in Tactics Ogre, but I still enjoy the random battles because of what I have stated above. FFTA has 300 Missions. Not too bad for a GBA title.

Most of the time, the answer is No just because i don't have time nor the ambition to. I'm more interested in story and plot than unlockables. The only time i will replay a game is if i haven't played it in months/years and i'm interested in the nostalgia. Needless to say, i'm a very impatient person

I got into rpgs when guides were freely available, FF9 was like the first RPG that I played through and was also the first time I used a guide that was available through playonline(I think that was the website). Xenogears was next and majority of the time I didn't bother using a guide until midway when I was curious on all the shit I didn't get and became dependent on it. So to answer the question, I rarely replay games because I use guides throughout the game play.Though when I was in Iraq, I played FF7 on my "off time." I played the game before, but I only got 3/4s of the way, so I guess it wouldn't count, but I did start from the beginning. When I was a kid, I used to replay the hell out of Sonic 2 and some NES titles.

Now a days, I rarely play any games so the chances of replaying a game is slim.

I used to but now I don't have the time or patience. I rarely buy story games anymore for example I didn't get the new Ninja Gaiden cause I know once I beat it I'll trade it in and lose half of what I paid for it. I only buy and keep games that have really good replay value such as online games now. My little bros beat the !%#@ out of there games though. They probably beat RE4 about 10+ times and still going strong.

The motivation to replay games back in the day [NES/SNES] was just because they were the only games I had, so I played them over and over. Sometimes I'd do better than my previous plays, sometimes I got owned. If I played them more to learn from my mistakes, etc, I might've developed a routine where I could run through it no problem and post it on YouTube.

Nowadays it's usually just to time trial or watch the in-game cinematics. All that good jazz.

I tend to replay specific series... MGS, DMC, Onimusha and especially RE, mainly because I wanted to see how much I could improve. I enjoy bare bones playthroughs and stuff. Some games have really interesting bonuses and others are just addictive. I played PN.03a couple of years back religiously for a month for some reason.

However, without bonuses or that variability in gameplay, I generally won't replay. RPGs are obvious examples but FF8 and funnily enough, FFX-2 were ones that I had interest in. Couldn't replay RE4 either.

Basically, if I can't do anything different with the core gameplay I won't replay.

In the case of Rpgs and action/adventure games, if I have nothing new or just bored, and if I've forgotten most of the game that's enough incentive to replay it. In any case, I'll always go back to the games I have as long as they aren't bad. The only game I willingly traded in was DMC2. What garbage.

FF6 is a prime example of one of the games I play over and over. I loved 12; in fact, it's third on my list of all time favorite FFs, but it's going to be a damn long time before I play it again, just because of the time and effort put into it.

FF12 is one of those games i really need to replay through again and take my time leveling up because there were some places in the game that had nothing to do with the main story of the game, and yet i never even knew until i cracked open the strategy and saw all the places i never been.

I REFUSE to replay Dirge of Cerebus just because of the bullshit gameplay. even if i do get keep my equipment on the next playthrough, i have to play on a higher difficulty and to me getting pot shot by the enemy from out of nowhere is not what i call fun. I've been tempted to sell both the game and guide but i'm keeping it. Don't know why but i'm keeping it.

I've always played through the Metal Gear Solid series multiple times. More so 2 than 1 and 3 though. MGS4 is just so much fun playing through multiple times.

I usually try to play through every game I get at least twice. Replay value is the second most important factor in a video game to me next to the fun I get out of it, I guess that's a big reason I like fighting games especially ST...no matter how many matches I play I'll never get tired of it.

If st remix delivers I could see myself playing it for the rest of my life and not getting bored of it (until arthritis kicks in anyways.)

Mega Man X is one of those games that you can just blow through in an hour, but still have alot of fun doing. It's such a great game, even today.

Agreed. I used to love playing the game through X-Buster only or Armor-less. (well except for those enemies that were immune to X-Buster)

Ask me how many times I've played through MGS, MGS2 (and Substance), and MGS3 (and Subsistence) on all sorts of difficulties. Ask me how many times I've played through Suikoden and Suikoden II, and accomplishing all the shit to be accomplished. Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.. how can you just play that once? I've been playing that shit over and over since I was in like 4th grade. All that shit to me.. timeless. Shit will blow your mind.

Just recently started replaying Bioshock on hard, harvesting all the sisters and getting all the diaries.

Replay value is the most important factor for me....if a game has shown everything it has to offer in just one play-thru of the story, then it really isn't worth much to me. So, of course I play through games several times, as I only get games with lots of extra "stuff" going on. My current love Devil May Cry 4 is an absolute masterpiece....I've spent a total of about 94 hours on it so far, and I'm still not "finished" or bored with it. The action itself is so satisfying, and so entertaining....and the cinemas are some of the best I've ever seen in a game.

These days, there are also "acheivements" to get....I've become addicted to getting as much acheivements as possible out of a game...they're like virtual trophies to forever remind you of certain cool things associated with those games.

Then, there's more old-style things like Geometry Wars or Omega Five, where the drive is to constantly get better scores....keeping a multiplier or combo going as long as possible, bonuses, etc. etc. There's also that small sense of pride from actually completing the score....like a "200/200" on a Live Arcade game, or "1000/1000" on a regular retail game (*currently I have 700 out of the 1000 on DMC4)

Also, most games of the past couple of generations now have multiple endings...so if you only play through once, you're missing out on the other possible endings at least. There's not much reason to play through something only once, especially these days when there's so much more you can do in a game.

when i was younger i couldn't afford to buy new computer games all the time

so i've beaten ultimate doom like 10 times
hexen like 5 times
heretic like 10 times
duke nukem 3d like 10 times

and it got to the point i was beating those games on hardest difficult (doom on nightmare is a bitch) and knew all the secrets and memorized all the item and enemy locations.

since then i've had huge backlogs of games to play so rarely do i give single player games a second time around.

The MMX series is a matter of timing myself and see if I can beat the whole game faster.

Exactly. I think MMX is the first game that I actually MASTERED to the point where I could beat it in about 50 minutes getting all weapons/e-tanks/special items (and about 46 min if I didn't get the Hadoken). You think YOU can't keep track of how many times you've beaten it? I play through Castlevania: SOTN at least once a year. Same for Super Metroid on the SNES, except it's every two years. Mega Man 2, 3, and X4. Alien Soldier. Shinobi 3.

I guess I just play through them repeatedly because they are awesome games. It just feels good to whip out an old game and go through it, it's just hard to explain.

If I didn't have a computer, I'd be playing my games all the time. Reading this thread makes me want to play games right now. Off to Super Ghouls n Ghost.

I've played through Marc Ecko's Getting Up an embarrassing amount of times.

Just noticed this. That game kicked ass on so many levels. I'd buy it for the soundtrack alone.. but I've only had the pleasure of renting it

Always good to see someone else praise one of my all-time favorite games. Getting Up is good as hell like pussy on a triscuit.

It seriously depends on the game for me. Just recently I rented Ninja Gaiden 2 (did not want to spend $60 on it), and even though I will not beat it before returning it, if I somehow beat it in the future (borrow it from a friend or something), I will NEVER replay it again. This game pisses me off so much.

However, despite beating it twice and messing around with it like 50 times, I would not mind playing Final Fantasy Tactics again. This is probably my favorite game of all time. Also, if I get a chance, I need to get the rest of the stars in Mario Galaxy.

Depends of the content of the game (i.e varying difficulties, gameplay types and achievements!!!!) and if it has online play.

thats a game with a good story, and since i know a little bit about writers it was good to see that they had legendary artwork from legendary writers.

Depends on how good and how long the game is. I rarely feel like sitting down and starting another 60+ hour ff epic. But its fun to dust off games every now and then and remind yourself what you like about it. This also ties into games I haven't beaten but got bored of, and the perpetual cycle of games I play.

I play EA's Skate. about once or twice a week. I also play Card Fighters DS a whole bunch. Actually I'm not finished with it because I can't find the damn 'Thrasher' card, otherwise I would be. But I play it anyway, kinda like a good road trip or bathroom game, if you know what I mean.

On the other hand, I have tons of single player games that I haven't even come close to finishing and will probably never play again, even though I 'want' to. I usually play them enough to give a very basic review of them, and then get sick of them. Oblivion, Viva Pinata, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and Ratchet and Clank come to mind. I dunno what it is, I get sick of the stories and adventures and whatever on games that are more involving. I can replay the most repetitive shit, like Super Dodgeball DS for like a bajillion hours, but get sick of playing Ninja Gaiden 2 after 15 minutes.
