View Full Version : Your top five game companies

I think there are some really good game companies out there making quality material, but most companies have problems with consistency in their lineups. You may like some of their games but the others are just actually shit or just not your cup of tea.

So what are your top 5 game companies? I'll post mine in a bit.

CyberConnect 2 - .hack Series
Konami - Zone of the Enders, Metal Gear

I would say capcom and s-e but I'll wait for FFXIII and the possible new Breath of fire game before deciding.

Capcom - Duh. Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, too many titles to list

Konami - Metal Gear Solid and Castlevania are too beastly. I suppose they don't have as many franchises that I like as Capcom does but the above 2 franchises are do great I can not give Konami anything less than the second spot. The recent DS Contra game and some of the older TMNT games were really nice too.

Those two are my favorite companies easy. After those it gets kind of blurry...

Nintendo -I've outgrown a lot of the games they put out nowadays but there's gems here they either put out or distribute like Smash Bros, Elite Beat Agents and things like that I still dig. Grew up playing the Mario games, Zelda, Kid Icarus, Metroid, you name it. I'll play Zelda Twilight Princess eventually...

Treasure - I have never known Treasure to put out a bad game. Back when they were with Konami they put out what is still my favorite Castlevania game, Super Castlevania which was the first game I downloaded when I got my Wii a couple of days ago. Gunstar Heroes, Astro Boy, the DS Bleach fighter man Treasure rules!

Atlus - I dunno, this company kind of crept up on me quick fast and before I knew it I was a fan of a lot of their games. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Magna Carta, Odin Sphere, and bringing out Arcana Heart in English! Granted, a lot of times they are just distributing but they make a lot of cool stuff available to us.

Honorable mentions go to SNK/P, Square-Enix, Arc, Namco Bandai, Sega who could all be in my top five at any given time. Probably forgetting a lot of other companies too...

I'm glad to see that most people have Capcom on the list. Sometimes, I have trouble even calling this a Street Fighter community anymore.

Anyway, my list:

1. Capcom: Street Fighter, vs. Series, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Megaman, Phoenix Wright, etc, etc...when you think about it, it's amazing how many great games we got from this company.

2. Nintendo: Super Mario, Earthbound, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Zelda, etc. Nintendo was the company that made me a gamer. The majority of the games I've played are Nintendo games.

3. Square-Enix: This is mostly for Final Fantasy. I've played and beat all the main games. Others are the Tactics series, Rad Racer, Xenogears, and Chrono Trigger.

4. Konami: Metal Gear and Suikoden (the first 2 anyway) carry this company. I like Contra and the old TMNT games too.

5. Bioware: The PC Baldur's Gate games (BG2 is my 2nd fav game of all time) carry this team to my top 5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republics is also awesome. But because these are the only two series from them that I like (Neverwinter Nights and Jade Empire failed to impress), it's a distant #5.

I thought about adding Sega, since I own quite a few of their games, but aside from Virtua Fighter 4, the games they released this century have been mediocre at best. And I don't care what anyone says: The PS2 Shinobi sucks.

bokchoy
07-10-2008, 11:26 PM
1. Square Enix: Mainly for the FF series and the hope that the next one will be the best. I've been disappointed a few times lately, but I'll always have hope.

2. Blizzard: They don't make anything that's short of amazing. Hell, they even scrapped SC: Ghost, just because they felt it was not Blizzard quality. Sucks that they only make PC games now, but their commitment to excellence impresses me.

3. Capcom: Street Fighter and Mega Man were important aspects of my childhood. I like DMC too.

4. Konami: I wish every video game developer/producer was parallel with Hideo Kojima's standards. MGS, Contra, and Castlevania are awesome.

5. Nintendo: I don't have a Wii(yet?) but I've loved every Legend of Zelda and Metroid game I've played.

Developers:

Quest Corporation: The makers of all the Tactics games by Square. Quite a celebrated history it has, producing Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy XII, and the Final Fantasy Tactics series.

Team Kojima:
Pretty much where I'll let the Metal Gear Solid series do my talking.

SNK: Pre take-over. Even though some of its' members have fathered the Street Fighter series. King of Fighters pre 99 series and some other titles come to note.

Arika: The arcade company responsible for Fighting Layer, and their spin on Street Fighter, the EX series.

Intelligent Systems: Portable fun is covered by them. :D

A-hem...
(in no particular order)

1. Capcom: What a shock coming from an SRKer, amirite? Still, even disregarding SF games entirely, Capcom would still be on this list. No other company is responsible for so many of my favorite franchises. Ever since I first picked up an NES controller, I've been playing Megaman. DMC still beats out all other 3D action franchises in my eyes. And RE4 is a work of art. And with everything they have coming out in the next 2 years, I can't not put Capcom on this list. Oh yeah, and 3S is still my favorite game of all time.

2. Bungie: I might catch some shit for this one, but I adore Bungie. I'm not so deluded to think that Halo is the best FPS ever or any sort of artistic masterpiece. Bungie gets on my list simply due to the atmosphere the company has about itself. It doesn't take itself too seriously, it has fun doing what it does, and it's one of the first companies to really keep a close watch on its own community. They may not always succeed at pleasing their fans, but they always try their damnedest, and I gotta respect that.

3. Epic Games: This was a tough one for me. I was actually caught between Epic and id. Both companies have extremely popular twitch FPS series that are in constant competition with each other, and both companies are constantly pushing graphics technology with new engines. Epic gets the slight nod partially for Gears, partially because id hasn't been doing much of their own work as of late (outsourcing the past two Quake games), and partially because Jazz Jackrabbit > Commander Keen.

4. Q Entertainment: Just about everything I've played that this company has churned out has put a smile on my face. Rez. Lumines. Meteos. Every Extend. Just absolutely wonderful experiences that combine sight and sound to make gaming equivalents of crack cocaine. This company needs more love.

5. Treasure: The King of Shooters. Period. This company is responsible for some of the best gaming creations of all time. Ikaruga. Gunstar Heroes. Bangai-O. Not only that, but they can even step out of their specialty genre and still make fantastic games. Bleach DS is one of, if not the best, portable fighting games ever made. They live up to their name fantastically, and I eagerly await their next wave of games come August.

Honorable Mentions:
Valve
Insomniac
Blizzard
Nintendo

If you're referring to ONLY Tri-Ace being good then...you don't need the Enix either, as they just publish the Tri-Ace games, as far as I know.

Taito
07-12-2008, 07:16 AM
SRK was doomed to be a post-SF site because of the absence of a traditional Street Fighter for more than 10 years (and I kind of have to put SF3 in the non-traditional category). Maybe we'll see SRK the way it was intended to be if SF4 is successful.

Thunder Force VI bumped Sega back to the top spot for me. Hopefully they'll resurrect other 3rd party IPs that were staples of past Sega consoles. After Capcom and Treasure I don't have any favorites.

Not necessarily my top 5 choices, just want to mix it up a bit.

Bethesda - For Elder Scrolls series

Bizarre Creations - PGR4, Geometry Wars.. I really like the Arcadey feel that most of their games have. When I first played a demo of The Club for example, I had a feeling it'd been made by Bizarre before I even knew. I just get the feeling that gameplay comes first with all of their games.

Q entertainment - For the fun-ness

BioWare - For Mass Effect

Konami - For MGS lately, but also Pro Evo Soccer for being a game I can always play with friends at any time. It never gets old for some reason. Classics like Track and Field and the first Silent Hill.

About 20 other companies on my list.

Capcom is easily the #1 for me of course. Capcom/Clover Studios brought us the greatness that is Viewtiful Joe. Then there's all the classics throughout the years. No other company is on the level for me.

I can't think of five, so I'll give you four:

Capcom
They produced some of my favourite games of all time, and they appeal to the hardcore and mainstream gamer, yet they don't dumb down their games. Capcom is capable of making a good game from any genre; they are multi-talented that way. But I'd say that action games are their specialty.

tri-Ace
They make RPGs fun. Combat in their games is not so much about hard numbers as it is about your characters' skill set and how you use them. Instead of level grinding, you use the tools that they give you. Their games have a fighting game feel to them, more so than any Tales game to date.

Atlus
Master of the niche game. Although they lost the Ogre Battle games, they still have SMT. And holy crap, they have been pumping out a lot of DS games lately. These days, Atlus is basically the developer/publisher to look to when you want an RPG to play. The only problem with these guys is their unwillingness to mass produce their games so everyone can have them. At the same time, you understand why they do it...it's worked for them for years, so why stop now? You can't argue with success. You can bet that if Quest was still under Atlus' wing, we would've had another Ogre Battle game by now.

Nintendo
Although they tend to focus on their established franchises most of the time, they still put out some unique stuff from time to time. Nintendo is not afraid to innovate, and they have been like this ever since Hiroshi Yamauchi took over the company. The loss of Rare was a serious blow, but it's a good thing that Nintendo themselves are a capable developer. Why else did the N64 stay afloat for so long? Nintendo has a lot of top teams at their disposal, although some could probably be put to more use, like Retro...what happened to them now that Metroid Prime is done?
