Basically the seller of an auction is asking me to suggest how much he should sell the item for.
-

A little while back: On a forum for my favorite musical artist, some guy goes to tell everyone he has this rare demo tape all the fans have been trying find. It was from before the artist was famous.

Most people tried to get him to post it up online. He wouldn't bc he wanted to resell it sometime. Me though, I knew you dont just get a man to give you something he thinks is valuable. I just asked him a few questions about the lyrics as opposed to hounding him for the mp3s. I guess by talking to him bro to bro, I gained his trust when everyone else on the board hated him. But we are not really friends by any means....

A link to an auction for an even rarer demo appeared on the forum. That one sold for $250! (damn.) I think this inspired the first guy to sell his item on Ebay. So I get a pm from the guy and he asks me how much I think he should put it up for. Im just wondering how far into hell I'll go if I suggest a price much lower than its actually worth ha ha. I seriously want this though.

Things for me to consider before replying to him:
1. Just because I say a certain amount doesn't mean he'll sell it for that amount. He must have paid big bucks for it since the wiki mentions it usually sells for several hundred $$ so he might not be that stupid to listen to me.

2. The damnedest thing here. The username on that message board is the same one I use for Ebay, so Im pretty sure he'll figure out it's me. Idk what negative things will for sure come of that, but it's more bad than good.

What would you do in a situation like this?

Just buy it from him for the cheap, get the mp3s, and sell it to make some extra money. Nothin' wrong with hustlin'.

What does it matter? You do know how an auction site works right? Most people put it up for $1. If you mean what he should set his reserve price to, again that probably won't matter because from what you've told us there is huge demand for this thing, so people will definitely bid on it.

Its not out on bit torrent believe me I'd be downloading that shit all day.

But I dont want it to resell. Im a big fan and wanted to hear what the secret version is like. I also perform a few of the songs on that tape so it's always cool to see what the song is like before it was changed into what it is today.

Im gunna tell him if he sells it Ill be bidding that way its no biggie if he finds out I win . Ill tell him after that maybe he should start between $100-150 (just so itd nothing crazy like $200) bc the Ive seen pricier more rare demos. Hopefully thatll work.

I heard there are maybe only 5 of these left in the world.

going to hell for what trying to lower a price on an item you want?

This is also something you could get outbid for eventually if hes auctioning it even if he put it up for a dollar that shit would skyrocket wouldn't it?

if he plans on selling it to you directly well all good in the hood then.

personally i feel like buying an Artist "Demo" tape is like buying a video game in its Alpha Stages. shit just aint ready yet....

I get what youre saying. Maybe I feel guilty bc the guy is asking me how much he should start it off for...who does that?

The artist Im talking about is a singer song writer so when the company makes a mainstream album it sounds gay and pop-ish. Its like getting to listen to a bluesy version that no one else got to hear. It's also got the song that got me into singing and playing in the first place so it isnt like its my 2nd fave artist's 2nd rated songs demo.

Why do you think he asked me about the price? Maybe he didn't know I was gunna bid on it.

he would ask you about the price just so he could probably make a ballpark figure of what he wants the starting bid to look like.

i would ask people all the time about what i should place my crazy ill nana Dunks should sell for on ebay before making one.

or even to know what to make a buy it now price... SNAP!

Pretty much the end of the thread - Update:

I basically told him start $100-150, but make it a longer running auction to give it steam and momentum. He said he thought it was at least worth $250 and is not even considering selling it anymore right now. Usually I'd feel bad...now he isn't even going to sell it.....but its more like .... $250? fuck that! Even if I did want it for $250 I dont have the money for it right now. Its a good thing he's not deciding to sell it cuz the crazy rich girl who bought the other demo would prolly take it.

Also I mentioned one of the demos selling for a whopping $250. I found out the reason why the auction ended so early was because someone offered him a larger amount. It actually sold for $500!

wtf
