View Full Version : Countering Ultras

This thread is for how to properly punish certain ultras on block / whiff.

Ryu: Ryu's ultra executes mad slow. If he throws this out and you aren't in the middle of an attack, simply hold up/forward to jump over it. It comes out slow enough that you'll be safe. Ryu recovers very slow from this, but if you block it that will eat up a lot of time. So simply jump over it and destroy Ryu with your combo of choice. Always jump over this, never block it. You're life will be much better.

Ken: On block Ken will float up with a verticle dragon punch. You can charge up a saving attack to level 2 just as ken lands. (start the saving attack and watch for your character to blink.) Free saving attack crumble combo, or simply ignore the saving attack and hit Ken with your combo of choice once he lands.

Chun Li: She rushes at you with a series of kicks. After the series of kicks, she'll turn around and hit two final kicks, a high kick and a backwards somersault kick. If you block the second to last kick start charging up your saving attack. The final somersault kick will whiff and you'll get at least a level 2 saving attack -> crumple -> combo of choice.

C. Viper: On block she'll go flying up into the air, chage up even a level 3 saving attack or simply hit her with your combo of choice on the way down.

Zangief: His Ultra doesn't leave him very vulnurable on whiff / miss, more or less as vulnurable as any other whiffed SPD. Punish accordingly.

Any further comments are much appreciated as there isn't much variety in the competition around here.

This is somewhat related, but in this video at 7:04:

Did Boxer just drop the focus or do Ultras really blow through FA?

Oh, sorry, hadn't noticed your list.

Ken's Ultra happens to be an armorbreaker. Not all Ultras and Supers are.

focus attacks only take one hit anyways before taking the rest of the damage as normal and stopping the attack. Any EX move will beat FAs. as well as moves that hit in rapid succession.

But i get that armorbreaking moves are slightly more useful.

boxer: he does 5 boring rush punches. block the first 4 the squeeze out a relaible anti air, or ex move and it'll knock him out of the last one. he got pretty decent recovery on the last punch so i wouldnt wait unless youre scared or just want a sure hit.

guile: everyone knows what he does. if blocked, he only does two flask kicks. sure every seen the vid where abel blocked the first two then did his ultra. his recovery is pretty sad so you get enough time to get off a combo but not sure about charging a level 2 saving attack. once again if you want to look fancy, after you block the first flash kick, you can get out a counter anti air or ex move and it'll counter.

el fuerte: he jumps on top of you and does some lame wresting move. it cant be blocked but there's a real low chance of anyone getting hit by it since you can always jump unless youre in a attack frame. if missed, he ends up hopping and turning around for a while wondering why they gave him such a garbage ultra. more than enough time to punish. last time i jumped from it was able to come down on him with a HK, c+mk, DP, cancel to ultra..serious punishment from ryu.

honda: does that headbut attack. you only block it once unlike his super. if blocked, he flips back to his feet but slowly and he's almost outside sweeping distance so carry out your punishment instantly ie take a step in and deliver.

damn blanka: good luck trying to block his super up close. but if you end up doing it, he rolls up in the air then then lands a step away. as he's rolling up in the air, make sure you walk forward or dash because he has decent recovery once he lands and after taking that much chip damage from his cheap ass ultra you wouldnt want to not drop maximum pinishment.

dhalsim: no punishment, hell he'll probably punish you for blocking it. he shoots out a decent size actuall fireball that hits multiple times. he likes to teleport or SA after he does it so watch out.

One question about ultras. Is it the more full your Revenge meter is the when you pull off the Ultra is the more damage it does?

Yes. It also does more if you have less health then your opponent.

Given that Blanka's Ultra isn't an amorbreaker and the hits are spaced far apart (especially at the beginning), it's conceivable that you can punish it with a Focus Attack.
