I was telling someone about my meager first tournament experience before and I wondered about other people. Who were the first people you played in a tournament? Are they still around? What was your first experience like?

My first tournament was Final Round a few years back, I forget which one. Anyhow I was only playing 3S because it was the only game I was competent in. It was my first real time taking fighting games seriously. The first person I played was Master Chibi, who if I recall correctly was playing Q on pad, which was a relief because I had come to the tournament on pad, and was happy not to be the only one playing that way.

I lost, barely. Was bummed, thought I may have a good shot here, as my brother plays Q so I at least had an idea what to do. I realized beating my bunch of friends all the time didn't end up making me a superstar by any stretch.

My next match was against Sabin's Alex, who took me out pretty quickly. I had never even played a good Alex before so I just got throttled.

That was my first two tournament matches, and I have to say both players were really cool guys it seemed, it sucked to be two and out, but still it was a good first experience.

So what I ask is, what was your first tournament experience, and if you remember who did you play?

I remeber when started playing in supersmash bros melee tourneys. Like you amongst my friends my peach was a beast. But then I played at a tourney and this really chill asian murderd me in the first round with Marth. ever since then I try to play as much different/random people as I can.

First tourney was NEC7, at the time I only played KoFXI (but mostly against CPU). I think I did alright for the time, but I went 1-2. Didn't feel bad at all because I was just happy to be there, I like the game and I like to play it. I think this set me up for a good mindset when playing games, because I don't really get pissed off when I lose in tourney. Yeah, you'll feel down for 5 minutes, but afterwards everything is good and I tell myself it was just a game.

NEC7 inspired me to start pursuing fighting games a WHOLE lot more, thank goodness I choose that tourney as my first

I faced Ricky Ortiz at MWC in '00 or '01. Mirror Match in A3, V-Saks. Completely destroyed me. The Hello Kitty plush facing me on the arcade machine didn't help...

First tourney match was against John Choi in a game I had never played before (ST)

Needless to say: I was overmatched. Won the first round on luck, then got destroyed.

Before I even knew that there was such a thing as tourneys for fighting games me and a bunch of neighborhood kids used to play the arcade games in a hole in the wall electronic shop, I was always playin MvC2, and then one day Arturo Sanchez walks in and hands my ass to me, and I see shit i never seen before, like infinites and resets... i didnt even know cable could link his super 3 times... then he tells me bout these tournaments in Chinatown and so i check it out meeting n chillin wit all the great NYC MvC2 players and such and learning mad shit... playing Arturo that day is what made me end up being a competetive player

My first tournament was some semi local EC stuff (tristate area). I won my first one, and consistently placed high the future at these tournaments there. I mostly got lucky to start playing there before more serious players did, as it gave me time to ramp my game up as better and better opponents started showing up.

At my first 'large' tournament, I took a lot of people out, but got screwed by someone screwing up the brackets ( I was playing someone elses matches). I lost to Justin in Guilty Gear, but it was close. Granted this was before he REALLY got his shit together, so I'd probably do worse now. :P

Ironically the first time I traveled to a tournament, I didn't play because I didn't want to get rocked (and I had little cash). Though I had been playing serious people for awhile, so I had experience already. That and the fact that tournament pressure doesn't get to me.

I think thats most peoples problem their first time out. They're nervous as hell. I remember a guy who would whip me pretty good in casuals, who I would absolutely destroy in tournament play, all because he'd get nervous and I wouldn't. So to anyone who's reading this who hasn't been to a tournament yet, try not to panic. As long as you don't draw a monster like Wong, you'll probably do better than you deserve.

Yeah, another thing that helped me out for my first tournament is I hadn't come too far off playing with some of the ATL players that were there at Final Round, so I knew people there so I wasn't just a guy there. I'd recommend to new players who are hitting up their first tournament to play with their local peeps if they can, that way you have people to hang out with/chill out with before the tournament.

I thought me drawing Arturo for my second ever match in a tournament was bad, but John Choi for your first match? Yowch. Though it is very nice to be able to have the chance to play someone really good your first chance out. I didn't even know I had played Art until I went to report my loss and saw the bracket.

Somebody making brackets clearly had it in for you. :P Thats pretty rough.

My first tournament was a tournament at VCU held by Renegade in 2004(or was it 2005?). I entered T5 and SF:AE. In T5 I got beat by some random dudes. In SF:AE I got eliminated by Koop. I picked CE Bison(the only thing I knew at the time was that Psycho Crusher could cross up) and he picked ST Chun. It was funny how he dominated me. He knocked me down in the corner and kept doing Lightning Legs. I had no idea what Bison had that could beat it so I started jumping in place then I jumped over him and ppl started laughing.

First match ever (this is for GG) was against some random scrub in CF (I too, was a scrub [more so] at the time). I won pretty easily...

Then I played someone else and lost that match, and in loser's I had to play XAQShinor (and by play, I mean let him practice combos on me :p).

Lol first tournament at my college...i beat two of my friends who were in the same CvS2 bracket with me..only to lost to Charlie who went on easy mode back in the days on the semis...fun stuff. Ended up getting 3rd.

The brackets were hella shady though, all the good players including Charlie were on my side including my friends, while the other side was scrub-tacular.

My first tournament was at CF back in January 2002, I think it was called X3, or something gay like that.

First match was against Justin. I lost.

I wound up getting 7th, out of like 60 or so people though, so it was cool. Lost to Henry Cen in losers.

First tourney was the one I held at Tilt in Colonial Heights, VA for Marvel. Up against b1gazn (Pete), got raped:shake:

First non-local tourney was at a random C3, I don't think they had a Marvel tourney, but Demon Hyo was there beasting in casuals using random teams. I think I got one good Doom combo on him before he raped me with Felicia:shake:

My first tournament was a local Tekken Tag tournament. I dont remember when it took place exactly, except it was before the game came out on console in the states. Hell, I dont even remember who I lost to exactly; I know I won one round in losers then got taken out. I think I used Eddy/Paul in those days

My first local tourney was in CVS2 with around 50 people. I got third with nothing but jump back roundhouse with bison lol.

First major I played in was at Final Round. I scrubbed my way past Skisonic (who would have absolutely crushed me if he had been on his usual game. It's funny because prior to the match we were chilling and he was telling me how much he hates playing random K grooves and I said how much I hate playing against A-groove and then we saw the brackets. Luckily my anchor was Cammy vs his Hibiki so I could mash my ass off!). I fought Master Chibi, and then Justin Wong. Justin raped me while doing his taxes.

The very first player I ever faced was during week 1 CvS2 and his name was(surprise surprise) Justin Wong. It was a pretty close match and he had already known how to play the game compared to me where I just experimenting as I was playing. CF was pretty crowded and everyone started leaning in as I was about to beat him, but he baited out super from me with like, a quick twitch c.jab with Rock. After that, I was hooked and started playing fighting games a lot more seriously.

My first tourney experience was at web2zone(sadly). They would hold mad local tournies for the heads that were going to EVO last year. Hella prep and whatnot and I was getting into ST at the time. I think I got like, 10th or some shit out of 35 entries or something. I forget who my first opponent was, but I know Chibi sent me into losers and then I just started raping the losers bracket free for the most part.

At my very first major, EVO East, I almost qualed for ST Top 8. DSP sent me to losers with(surprise surprise) Boxer and I was playing Claw exclusively because I started believing in Tokido's method of just going for the cheapest char in the games and winning. Then I get a few wins in losers and play Shag. He was using(surprise surprise) Boxer. He went on to qual for top 8 while I was busy learning that matchup for a year now. I've gotten better since and can actually hold my own in tournies now. Still trying to crack that top 8. Getting tired of getting 13th.

My first tourney ever was... last week at Evo. Yeah, I'm a newbie :P. Won 2 matches and lost 2 at ST, which I started playing (vs CPU in 1995 doesn't count) when GGPO came out. I guess I did okay.

I played Honda all the way. Faced Phillip Echnoz (Hurricane Phill) as Ryu in the first round and won easily (he basically missed all his reversal DPs IIRC so I was free to pressure him all day).

Then I faced someone's much tougher Chun Li - got tangled in basic fireball-sweep traps, and whenever I did get the knockdown and would apply my usual wakeup tricks, he'd reversal upkick every time to escape. Got my first loss there.

Then I faced XTG's Zangief. Honda vs Zangief in ST is pretty retarded, and I won easily with a lot of simple MP slaps and jab headbutting any jump-ins.

Then I faced Hung's Ken. Oh boy, that was like the Chun Li match all over again, except Ken's well-timed DPs prevented me from even getting that knockdown in the first place. So I got eliminated easily right there.

Overall I thought Evo was total hype, and I'd love to go to more tourneys in the future!

Tekken 3 in Vuienna way back... but they wouldn't let me configure my buttons and I played the japanese version and the tournament ran 50Hz PAL ones. I didn't even know I could wiff those Xiayou combos... not to mention a lot of the stuff was damn hard with the pad. Plus it was my first tourny and I was nervous. And THEN they handed out Red Bull. Back then I never drank ANYTHING caffeinated. That certainly helped my mental clarity

I placed 3rd though I easily could've won. Before the tournament I beat the winner of this tourny to hell n back. I think he was VERY relieved to see me fail in the semi-finals

And RaishinX: I wouldn't call Xiayou god tier :wgrin:

P.S: Then there was the VF4 tourny I placed 2nd... argh, so nervous again. Those were about the ONLY two big tourny's in the city with anything worth as price. Oh, oh, though I DID win the one local fighting enthusiast tourny in the Tekken 3 department. That was awesome, especially in there the competition was quite tough. I went into the finals as the slight underdog, having had scored a 7-3 fight record vs my oponent in the warm ups. But THAT time, I remained calm. Close fight, awesome match. :lovin:

My first actual named player I played? I honestly don't remember. I think the first time I played anyone worth mentioning was when I first started going to CF back in 98-99. Most of my time before that was spent wandering a good percentage of Queens making a small name for myself. I was horribly average in everything I played, but when you're stalking bodega scrubs you'll look like a god.

I know I met Arturo somewhere between 99 and 2k1 when niggas used to crash at Ash's house and we'd play whatever niggas brought over. I remember bodying everyone there one day with Hwang in SC1. lol

My 1st tourney was a KOF2k3 ranbat in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. EVERY TEAM had Duo Lon in it more or less, but at that moment I was prepared for it. I can't remember my team(Griffon/Jhun/Hinako?Robert?) But I know I bodied every Duo Lon-based team I came across. I think I got beat by some King team that I know I shoulda beat. I came in 3rd that day.

My 1st major tourney was Evo 2k4, oddly enough. I had been in Okinawa, Japan for 3 years by that point. My initial purpose there was to help run the SNK tourneys and play in VF4. I got there jetlagged as all hell, met The Answer, went to FFA, played relatively horribly in 2k3(it was fun getting beat by the strats I passed on to niggas), went 2-2 in VF4Evo IIRC, and just lived it up the rest of the time. The SNK part was a bust more or less, but I met Mike Z(he happened to be on the setup next to us) who was doing some projectile assist FSD combos. Tekken 5 was there, but I didn't bother to play the beta. It's funny, because once T5 came out proper, I worked my way up to being one of the better players in Okinawa. I met up with StridaJin(I honestly don't remember how either lol) and we got a good handful of the Tekken playing gaijin out there and made a team.

I faced John Choi in my very first tournament match ever in Alpha 2 at Midwest championships in 2001 when I was sixteen. When I heard the names called I almost threw up. I didn't go to SRK back then because I didn't have an internet connection. The only information I had on the tournament scene was from the back of Tips n Tricks.

He got fa double perfect in the first match against me. I managed to land a few hits in the second after I switched to Sodom. He smiled and shook my hand.

Still my favorite player ever.

My first named player i played was ricky ortiz at a local tourny he and jwong showed up to at TGA when it was in woonsocket RI. I got raped pretty bad. I was playing dudley back then.

My first major was SBO quals also @ TGA. I had a bunch of players at my house for the tournament (jwong, mopreme, true karate, flash G, jet phi, random james, and henry cen) and i did horrible. But that weekend was the weekend i decided to play yun after mopreme taught me how to do kara palms.

2nd major was @ Evo East in 2005 where i spent the entire time with issei learning stuff with yun. I stayed with issei, henry, jwong, quotes, kofiend and flash G. It was a really really fun weekend for me and it's one of the reasons i stayed into fighters as much as i am.

I can barely remember. I got second to Roger Chung in a street fighter 2 tournament at a bowling alley...i think that was my first tourney. He took me to Worlds Finest comics where i met the rest of the top 4...Roger, Tomo, Tony, Willie. Those guys would kill me. Other players i played against were jason (Apoc), george ngo, martin, gerald, vahe, hip, and thats about all i can remember.

First was NEC8 was T5DR. I think my first who I really believe was Steve Harrison. Who used Lei, and stomped my ass everywhere. Then I played a Julia player, and somehow beat him. Then of course, was my "Idol" Justin Wong for my third match. I introduced my self earlier, cause he was the only one I knew straight up. Of course, his Feng Wei Raped me. Not a good bracket I was in, but I guess thats what happens when you enter in late.

Ah, ok. No, those were even less godly. In fact... I know there are about 20 serious people in the area of 1.7 million. And all have small apartments so the constant question is... "anyone got space for 10 people cause I don't".

Ah well, I don't think other European city dwellers have it any different.

My very first tourney was an MVC2 tourney at CTF, the one before 3X. I actually played MegaMan Steve there believe it or not. I lost to him, then won my loser's bracket match. Kind of cool I guess, because most people catch it bad their first tournament.

I still remember it. I had N-Vega.. you played Cammy. I had knocked you down, once I went for meaty something, and you Spiked it. So I knocked you down again, got to that exact range again, and you Spiked again, but I chilled, then gave you the claw super as a prize.

My first arcade outing was memorable for sure. Im pretty sure it was in Warwick, I know that arcade is gone now wherever it was. I was probably 10 or 11 and I was kicking ass for an hour on SSF2 just spamming Ryu's fireballs. Then this dude who was in his twenties destroyed me with Bison. He showed me how to use normals and I went home a much better player. I vividly remember getting pissed while my mom cheered me on and his gf was telling him to go easy on me.

You guys make me feel old. But my first tourney was at Cool Crest in Kansas City, Missouri WAY back in 1992. They had a SF2CE tourney to show who was the best. It wasn't a REAL tourney by any stretch, and it was single elim. I picked Zangief and got zoned to crap by a Ken player.

2nd tourney was at Ameristar casino in Kansas City, Missouri in 1998. I did a 2nd Impact tourney and entered Hugo. I beat 1 necro player, and got beat by a Sean player. I then was eliminated "again" by a Ken player.

Fast forward to 2006. I went to the Underground arcade MVC2 tourney in Atlanta. I had just started really plaing Marvel at the time. I got Cable/Doom/Iron Man in the first round. Some guy had MSP. I made a lot of bad mistakes like accidently tagging in my characters repeatedly. I was really nervous. In losers this hispanic kid named Ricky W took me out with MSP. I was using Santhrax.

Impact Clash in Atlanta, GA.Did bad in every game, was really drunk.

Saturday I entered the Underground arcade tournament, and got third. Only because nearly everyone was playing their first tourney and I had played a few.

Hopefully I'll entere Southern Battle Opera and Impact Clash II and do a little better.

First Local Tournament:
Campus Cove in York University in January 2005:
-CvS2 using K-Cammy/Athena/Raiden and got second last.
-3S using Alex and got dead last.

First Major Tournament:
T6 in Orbit in July 2005:
-CvS2 using K-Cammy/Athena/Raiden and got dead last (lost to RPGv2 (K-Yuri/Maki/Rock) and Maki The Tiger (C-Honda/Ken/Blanka).
-CFE using Jedah/Urien and got 9th (forgot who I beat, lost to Ricky Ortiz (Urien/Karin) and Vrus (Alex/Karin).
-#R using Testament and got dead last (forgot who beat me).
-HSF2 using ST-Chun-Li and got top 8 (forgot who I beat, lost to Ricky Ortiz (O-Sagat) and Dogberry (CE-Guile).

The funny thing was at T6, there was a Team Canada for CFE and since the other team members weren't present and I was one of two people who played it regularly, I was on the national team. :looney:

Texas Showdown 5, first match was against my a friend of mine who I went to the tourney with (lame). Beat him but got peaced out by a girl. Then, to top it off, I think I had to play my friend again. I won, then lost again. Not 100% sure about this though. This was GGXX

Then, 3S. I did ok, I won a match, lost to one of the Nebraska 3S heads, I think Datrick was his name. Then I won a match, then lost another to somebody using Chun. Don't really remeber to much, cool ass tourney though, LoliCup ftw.

Also, my first and only experience playing JWong at Mahvel. Dude raped me, but I got his Sent down to half life by chip damage. After that, I stopped playing marvel lol.

ahh my first tournament ever was local KOF99 in Mexico, was single elimination, lost to a guy who i played regularly, but regularly lost to him so i was like ok np.

second time was a KOF 99 one too and did better, won my first round, got peaced out in the second, it was a 2 day turney, i was so nervious but instead of doing worse i did better won another game to got eliminated next, got 5th place so i was happy.

When moved to the border i start attending more tournaments, the funny thing is there was this tourney Battle at the Border last year, was training for 3s a lot, i went to the tourney and signed up for 3s and i registered for ST too wich i have played like 2 times in my life, tournament ends and placed 3rd in ST and like 5th 3s lol, after that ST is my main focus in tourneys :china:

I can't remember too clearly, but my first tournament match was against Jonstar!,who raped me with Balrog.

My second match was against DENNIS KIM, who I beat.

Can't remember my third match.

GTASF people will get the references.

DENNIS FUCKIN' KIM.

First tournament for me was MoAT, Mother of All Tournaments for VF2 in Toronto. I got my ass handed to me so badly that after the match I literally walked out of the arcade and never came back for a good week lol.

First major tournament for me was at E3 for Soulcalibur 1 on Dreamcast. I call it major because the prize was a 2001 Suzuki Katana sportsbike lol. I won the tournament, beating Dan Hsu who used to work for EGM/1up in the finals. Got the bike shipped to Canada, rode around on it for a good year or so and then sold it to pay my university tuition for the next 2 years.

Holy shit man, that is probably the best fighting game prize ever! The sponsored DOA4 circuit has nothing on that.

May have wanted to pull a Crocodile Dundee and done a junk-check.

My first tournament was some place in Maryland, I forget where, someone's house. Friend from SRK (Renegade) drove me up. Got beasted in... well, everything. CvS2, 3S, and GGXX (original, so this had to have been summerish of 2003 because the game got it's US release on 2003-02-03).

Fun, and made me get more in to the scene. I think the first tournament either makes or breaks a person; they either say "Yeah I want to get better and beat these people" or "These guys take this way too seriously, I'm out".

Back in June my college (UC Davis) had a tournament for MvC2, SF3:3S and CvS2. I signed up for CvS2 and 3S and on both brackets, I get seeded first against the best guy around, TanakaForce (I heard he was pretty good in SFA3 and GGXX, but also in other games). Everyone laughed because both bracket seeds were random and I had really bad luck (even Tanaka thought it was messed up). I get my ass kicked pretty bad. So yeah, that was my first tournament experience.

first tourney ever - neutral ground cvs2 console tourney spring 2k5
first player faced - supermin (yup I beat him..take a walk scrub lol)
experience - GREAT ! got my ass handed by many but it was a good start :cybot:

I knew about CTF since the beginning of time though. I actually remember playing mvc1 around 1999 or something. I also remember first day CF had 2 mvc2 cabinets. shit was CRAZY ! used to cut school like every other day to play marvel(until infinites made what marvel is now a days)

My first tourney experience was at web2zone(sadly). They would hold mad local tournies for the heads that were going to EVO last year. Hella prep and whatnot and I was getting into ST at the time. I think I got like, 10th or some shit out of 35 entries or something. I forget who my first opponent was, but I know Chibi sent me into losers and then I just started raping the losers bracket free for the most part.

ahh..I remember that one mainly because I got 5th or something in cvs2 out of 27 people. I remember you entering w2z tourney for the first time(you were at w2z before that but just walked around lol) http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=130633

i find it hilarious that a good portion of these posts mention justin wong as a the first person they played or played at some point in their first tourney. hell of a way to get introduced to tournaments.
