The official SF4 dev blog has been updated today by announcing that akuma is now playable.
Shizowa san, the sf4 producer, hints at the end of her post that tuesday will have something special, unfortunately google translator is pretty bad when it comes to translating from japanese.
Can anybody translate that last part so we can try to figure out what is this all abt.

I hardly count those as 'surprises' IMO, but hey if they made Gouki a 'surprise', then I don't really see why I should keep my hopes up :/

"Surprise" is probably not the best way to translate it, I would say "announcement". It was mentioned in Tuesday's update as well, so I guess they've been going for some kind of buildup... I think some kind of information regarding the home version is fairly likely. It probably won't be anything huge, but maybe information about upcoming announcements at TGS, or info on more exclusive characters, or something. Time will tell, I guess.

If it's an update America is screwed. We won't be able to dl it through their networks since they're all in Japan. Hopefully America can get some sort of other method like an update on a USB drive that we can stick into the Taito and do the update with.

by the time they get done with the console version, they might as well call it SF4 + alpha or some shit.

I think the japanese are all riled up about the new t6 upgrade. May be the reason? AOU is going to be SOOO good this year.

yep, winners get a special seal or title of some sort on their gamertag apparently. which is basically worthless since cards expire after 500 matches.

i've seen people with IC card records of over 1000 wins, so i'd think that your info persists from card to card...

ah true
your card does expire after about 500 matches or something like that but you dont lose your stats or anything. the only thing i noticed was that when you go to your character profile on your phone, itll still show your old card's serial number instead of the new card. youll know your card expire when the reader keep spitting it out and you get a message on the screen. just pull it out and put in a new card.

Yeah, looked into it and it seems like it's a national tourney for SF4. Seems like it's Japan only. I guess the reward for the winner is he gets some seal on his card so when he sticks it in it says like SF4 champ or something.
So yeah, nothing good for us Americans :sad:.

it's like that for every national jpn tourney... Tekken and VF do the same thing. They can't give out prizes with monetary value in tournies.

Don't worry, once AOU rolls around and everyone starts getting super hyped for other games, I wouldn't doubt Ono might get a lil desperate and throw out a new character or something.

1. It's legally considered gambling in Japan if you offer cash prizes.
2. Japanese culture has this ideal of doing things for the love of it rather than for money, to a stronger degree than say the US.

Unlike American tournies, Japanese tourneys are free to enter. Its more about being reconized as a top player than making money and stuff. If you are going to be making any money playing fighting games in Japan its getting paid by Arcades to come play at their arcade to attract people.

Oh yeah, I remember hearing about this. An arcade will put up flyers saying "Kuroda will be here from x-y p.m. playing Necro" or something like that, and make & sell DVDs of it. Never outright heard players got paid for this but it's certainly a reasonable assumption.
