Hey, I am going on a business trip soon to Japan for my company. After I was done with business I wanted to hit up the best arcade for SF4 in Japan. Even if I have to fly from my destination there I will do so. I need a place that just has the best comp plain and simple. Depending on how much money I take with me I will be staying anywhere from a week to a month. Thank you in advance.

I dunno the best in Japan. I've never played outside Tokyo. I wouldn't want to say they are the best, because Osaka and other regions have got some real solid players.
But if you go to tokyo I recommend The Ikebukuro arcades or Hey arcade in Akihabara. Pretty much anywhere in tokyo you will usually find good comp.
game inn sakura has good comp but its crowded and sometimes people just arent playing it. But thats kind of rare i guess.
kesh!

I'd say
game inn sakura
game inn sakuragame inn sakura
game inn sakura

game inn sakuragame inn sakuragame inn sakuragame inn sakura
hey! arcade was awesome like MOD said
but if you are starting up, go into the ones in ikebukuro like MOD said, usually scrub tier there, work your way up to the point where you walk into Taito station and you're like
ehh, that guy isn't good
then upgraaaaaaaaaaaade
fighting games is like IRL MMOs, we all gotta level up and then raid on japan =(
Club Sega in shinjuku (nishiguchi) is where Daigo and other experts play.
The one in Akiba is also good.
If you want to play for 50yen then you have to give up the nice cabs and go to Shibuya kaikan, Dan and others play there.

Not bad if you want to play 3s and 3s players like INO in it, but there's only 2 cabs and like you said they aren't playing it all the time from what i saw.

Shibuya Game Kaikan has SF4 now? Sweet. I've been playing at the Shibuya Taito and Shibuya Adores (still have the 10 win game limit) because the Kaikan didn't have SF4.
They aren't widescreen cabs though? That is lame. Too bad I'm going to Palo Alto for a month for work. :(

i think it was like
east exit, turn left and keep going until things get kinda shady (like there's a telephone club and i think a ramen store at the corner), turn left again and you'll see some Taito arcade, near there is a pachinko spot with games on the 2nd floor called game safari.

That's about right--you'll know you're at Game Safari when you see the huge Zebra butt. Not lying.
Take East exit and stay veered to the left, you will find it. Maybe a 5 minute walk.

I added in a few of the places I could find from this thread into the SF4 tracker on EventHubs.com.
http://www.eventhubs.com/articles/2008/aug/15/street-fighter-4-arcade-machine-tracker/
I don't speak or read Japanese, so this is a bit of a challenge for me.
I'm not promising the most accurate listing for Japan, but I will try my best.
If you know of any spots where I can find addresses, or any corrections I should make, just let me know.

WTF?! Are you saying 50yen per game?! Who the fuck pays that type of money?! I guess since most of us in the US are scrubs at the game I'd have to work my way up. Maybe the first week in one place then 2nd week at another, etc, etc. What do the cabs look like though over at Club Sega and are they really 50yen a game?
-Tha Hindu
50 yen is 50 cents equivalent whats the big deal there
and its 100 yen a game for everything at club sega
they are the hd viewlix cabs
and yeah i agree with club sega for the comp

 Yeah, I read/ interperated that completely wrong. Thought there that 50yen was actually 5,000yen. I thought about it like half an hour after I posted but was on the road to go to FFA to play some SF4. Anyways, post edited, my bad.

Also, does anyone know any affordable places around these arcades to stay at? I'm looking for something like a hotel or motel. Something along those lines. I heard there are places for businessmen where they can spend the night. It's like a small room with a twin size bed and internet connection and every morning you just check out. Later at night you just check back in. I heard it was around 1000yen as well. Can anyone confirm this or anything like this? Thank you.

the cheapest way is to just goto a love hotel, but there is no internet connection... i did that when i was passing through tokyo 4 years ago. in shinjuku there are some cheap places for like 4000 yen for 5 hours after 7am and only 1000 for each extra hour.
since you are just passing through and going to arcades (basically what i did) that might fit. if you rollin in dough, you can just get a salaryman hotel for like 12000 - 18000 in shinjuku, and shibuya. it gets cheaper as you get out of central tokyo. i heard as low as 7500 yen somewhere on chuo line.
i only reccomended the love hotel cause it worked for me and i met no issues carrying 2 duffle bags and 2 backpacks while being really piss ass drunk arcade hopping. good luck

I know there are some fairly cheap hostels you can stay at in Tokyo (although not THAT cheap)... I stayed in Asakusa before, for like 2000-something per night, decent place with free wireless internet in the lobby. Take a look at hostels.com and see if you find anything of interest, I guess. I dunno how easy it is to travel within Tokyo in the middle of the night though, so maybe you'll be better of finding a manga cafe to crash in or something, I dunno.

Yeah, like I posted before, money is the factor here and the more I have the longer I will be staying. How much are these manga cafes? If you're not so blatant about it do you think you're able to live in one for a month? What's the atmosphere/ accommodations like? Also, what do prices usually range from? Thanks for all the help my Japanese brethren.

Manga cafe's are good for an overnight thing, but not something i would want to live in.
Essentially, you pay like, 20 bucks for 10 hours (prolly 12 -14 bucks for 5 hours, and most places have a night deal like this) and you get a small cubicle where you get a computer, a tv, and a big chair. Sadly, said chair does not recline, and the cubicle is pretty small. The one i generally stay at has small blankets and gigantic pillows (other way around would be better but whateva) so I just sleep on the floor in an uncomfortable position. It's a cheap place to stay for a night if price more than comfort is the issue. You do get free soft drinks tho!
HOWEVER, if you're in Akihabara, there's a capsule hotel like, 10 minutes walking, and i guess there's one even closer if you check out this site (in English):
http://www.capsuleinn.com/
For twice the price, you get from anytime after 5PM until 10AM. You may think "they're too small" but they're seriously waaaaaaay better than a manga cafe, and theyre really friggin comfortable. The best sleep i've got in Japan EVER (in the 10 months ive lived in this country, just not all at once) was the one night i stayed in a capsule hotel. There's places to put your stuff, they have shower rooms, everything. And for only 4000 yen, less than 40 bucks. If you're staying by yourself and want a comfortable place to sleep, I honestly can't recommend anything better.
BTW if you're in Osaka, it's not worth going all the way to Tokyo when you can just go to Sega Avion in Namba. It's been talked about a lot already in the SFIV forums, had a buncha loc tests. Its got 3 setups, so 6 machines total, and 3/5 rounds, unlike the usual 2/3. There's always competition for it. The money you would spent getting to tokyo would be money you could have spent playing SFIV or staying at a capsule hotel for 2-4 nights, depending on how you get to tokyo.
http://gojapan.about.com/cs/accommodation/a/osakacapsule2.htm
That's got information about capsule hotels (One is only 2500 yen!). Namba is the stop that you're near, so you'll be right there anyways. Manga cafe's are everywhere, you seriously walk down any busy street and you'll just find some. I don't have to point out specific ones.

Wow, that's freaking insane. Sorry, just don't see stuff like that in America is all. I think this would be the best way of going about it. I take it that Sega Avion SF4 setups are around 100 yen as well am I right? Thanks.

When I stayed in Osaka it was at a Comfort Inn and I think I was running like 60 bucks a night (accounting for exchange rate). Small twin bed, free internet, and the shower/shitter/sink combo. Place had a washer and dryer too for like 100 yen wash/50 yen per 30 minutes drying. It was right next to the "Arcade" (as in shopping district) and about a 10~ minute walk from Namba Hills (depending on number of people shopping that day).
It was a bit more expensive than a capsule hotel, but well worth it to me.
When I went to Tokyo I stayed a couple nights in a more expensive hotel ($250~) until I found a cheaper one (maybe $70) which I then stayed in for a week. I guess I should have planned it out instead of winging it like I did. Also not speaking Japanese + not knowing the country = bad combo.
I'd go again if I could get a good month over there again, but fuck if I wouldn't plan everything out better. And also play more games. I was so petrified of a lot of the players in the arcade that I just didn't play half the time, or if the place was packed I would just sit back, watch, lose a game or two, and then go sightseeing instead.
HeartNana was fun to watch cause he was raping face in AH.

Yeah, sega avion is 100 yen, 3/5 rounds. 3 setups.
However, if youre in Tokyo, theres plenty of capsule hotels over there, too, and plenty of places/comp to play at. It just depends what you're closer to. Any major city will have cabs/comp

lol, just hyping up the countryside. If anyone is HONESTLY goign to take a trip all the way to japan just to play an arcade game, they'd be doing themselves a huge disservice to just spend the whole time in tokyo or osaka (i was kidding, by the way, both are awesome cities).
I do love okayama though... it's a good mix of beautiful countryside with city life in drivable distance, and we got that SF4 shit out here too, yo. ;)

He said he wants to stay longer to play sf. He's not coming to Japan JUST to play SF. I just said that if he's near osaka or tokyo, either place has good SFIV comp. Has nothing to do with "how should i spend my trip in Japan" and it has all to do with "Where is the best arcade in Japan to play SFIV".
Mist 2 isn't all that good to be honest. The level of competition in Avion is much, much higher than in Mist 2, plus they only have 2 head to head cabinets there, whereas Avion has 3 set up iirc.

Despite me recommending Mist 2, and despite living only 1 stop away from Umeda, I still haven't been there. I was at "Penguin" which is a couple of minutes away from Monte, and I bumped into Haitani and another 3s buddy, and that's when they told me to go to Mist 2. Anyway, as much I liked Monte for being the 3S capital of Osaka, I hated how I always walked out of there smelling like shit. I'm glad I don't have to go there for good comp.
I quite like Avion though, and that's where I met that Cuisinart guy. He first talked to me, then asked to take a photo, then asked me to join his guild, all the while assuring me he wasn't gay. Interesting guy. His lure for me joining his guild was a female member who he showed a photo of. She was cosplaying as Chunli. That sealed the deal.

yea i dont see why people want to play at "the best arcade in japan" when they can to any random arcade and get their ass handed to them by a non name player. i thought you were supposed to slowly make your way up...

The thing is, you cant always just go to a random arcade and have people there playing. If you want to make sure there's comp, you have to go to the better ones. Random arcades don't always have people playing at them. And even if there are people, sometimes theyre average at best. If you want to actually play someone GOOD, then you might need to go to a better arcade.

ok i exaggerated with the any random arcade comment but i'm just saying that most arcades in any big city will always have comp once you go after working hours. its not like its a game with a small following where there are like 1 or 2 arcades where people even play the game seriously. why the best arcade? why not any good or decent arcade?
HeartNana
09-12-2008, 02:34 AM
Well, that's why I said, "if you're in osaka, you dont need to go to tokyo and vice versa". He just wanted a top tier arcade, and we gave him a buncha choices. There's only one arcade in south osaka i would really "recommend" and that's Avion, and there's a few other places that have it, but theyre pretty dead and the comp isnt NEARLY as good. Decent players go to good/decent arcades, the best players go to the best arcades. Its one thing if you want to just play whoever, but if youre specifically looking for the best (both to watch and play) then you want to go to the best place you can.
i was more talking about the question, not the response. maybe its just me but if im a beginner just learning to play the game, i wouldnt be asking for THE BEST arcade to play the game just so i can play the best players when i cant even touch an average player. thats all i'm saying and like i said, thats just me. on the other hand im not giving off an elitist attitude and saying if you suck you shouldnt go to the best arcade either but if its one thing i know, its that you dont really get better playing someone who is 100x better than you are...unless you have the natural SF gene like some players. as for the good player goes, best player goes comment...you hit the nail on the head. you start where the good players play then work your way up. to be honest when i first started playing i learned more playing against the computer than i learn playing against people.
HeartNana
09-12-2008, 06:24 AM
I get what you're saying, and i agree about going to good arcades as opposed to the best arcades. It's VERY difficult to get better when someone is just that much better. For me, going to a scrub arcade and playing SFIV against scrubs was way better practice for me than just getting raped in the face. I learned a lot more because I had a chance to try things as opposed to playing against someone who I have no chance of beating. I agree with all your points, but if it's just a trip, it's kinda cool to go to the "best" arcade if you're only gonna be here temporarily. Just seeing the best players in action, not even playing sometimes, can be cooler than just simply playing average players all the time. :)

Ye I think I'll quit this Cuisinart's guild. I went to an arcade to see a guy banging on the machine for losing... really banging the machine and shaking it. And then I saw that we were in the same guild. Out of shame, I didn't use my card that night.

well i can only play on weekends, and even then, i usually spend MAYBE 10% of my game playing time with SFIV, cause the rest is spent with Tekken and Arcana...but its still enough to get SOME points. I just dont have an arcade worth going to thats closer than like, an hour and a half away.
i hope i catch my one of my team members doing something against my SF code of conduct so i can disband.

Not necessarily to go play SF4, but I'm heading to Osaka next week (and will be visiting Kyoto as well), I know of Ko-hatsu being in Osaka. I guess I'll be using that arcade directory listing in my old issues of Arcadia then. lol

CFAY - lol
Superking - Ko-hatsu is only good when there's a tournament, and only for that game. Otherwise, nobody is gonna be there. Its smaller than my apartment, and i wish i was joking.
If you want to go to play gundam, i assume you want 50 yen a play?
If so, Athena in Namba is good. SCOT in Nipponbashi is good. Monte Carlo is always a good choice. When you go to Kyoto, make sure to go to A-cho. It still remains my favorite arcade ever, it's so perfect in every way, haha.
Otherwise I say go to Nipponbashi/Namba area, look for an arcade and when you find one, there'll prolly be people playing Gundam.
Also, in Shinsaibashi, there's this arcade called Hikari, and I think it has an all gundam floor, worth checking out if youre there (i think shinsaibashi is one of the coolest areas in japan personally) but prolly not worth going out of your way for.
Anyone play at Taito Station in Asakusa? I just moved to Japan about a week ago and Taito Station seems to have the best machines...
If you ever see some white guy getting owned as ken around town its probably me :-\

Yeah I figured that, and it shows in the pics on their website. I will probably hit up Kohatsu though because they still play MG2 there, although I'm already done with the game (longer than year wait for a port and also no local arcade in Vancouver getting the game when they buy everything else though really killed it for me). I won't go there long though since they don't have gvg (only seed destiny for some odd reason).
Thanks for the advice for gvg places, too bad my vacation wasn't in November, Premium Dogfight III is that month. =(
EDIT: I don't care if it's 100Y to play, gvg in Vancouver is 75 cents to a $1 to play, so I'm already used to that price.

MG2? Looking at their website youre referring to Muscle Grand Prix 2 i assume. I can honestly say Ive never seen anyone play that. If you want to play single player, then yeah go for it. Places like A-cho and Monte carlo have the game too, and you might actually find someone to play against.
And if you dont care about price and just want a nice arcade, most sega/namco arcades are the nicest ones ive ever seen, but the games cost more, so competition is worse.

They usually have / had tourneys for that game and always put up videos. That and they still have the game as per their site.
Anyway I'm just mainly going to go to play gvg and where the comp is for that.

yeah, tourney days are the only days anyone is gonna play it, otherwise youre SOL. And you can go anywhere for gundam, really, lol.
Kohatsu is only busy during tourney days, you won't find anyone there on normal days, so don't bother. I know, since I work about 5 minutes away from there and pass by the arcade every morning and afternoon. The place is DEAD outside of tourney days.
