Nice to see SF4 grabbing some media praise...

Nice. This gets me even more hype about the game. I'm particularly excited about the more lenient frame windows, as I'll be playing this with a stick, but I'm a stick noob. Very nice.

Edit: Also, lol at the comment on the article.

People are judging this game rather quickly. It's nice to see sf 3 and 2 always praised in these articles though. the game does look good so far, but so do many other games nowadays. I'll reserve judgment for later.

A game magazine site? Oh boy. Its like a dog magazine covering a dog show. Thats not press.

I don't really care about why they said it was good, i'm just glad that there's an article out there praising it for all it's worth. The vast majority will never understand the technicalities right now anyway, but at least it will be a decent boost to sales, bringing more people into the community.

It is meaningful to the rest of the gaming world who may not be hard core fighting game fans. For people that frequent SRK it might not mean much, but for main stream gaming media to give the game some good press goes a long way for the fighting game community imo.

Don't know if people have noticed, but SF4 is often in the top 10 list at sites like 1UP.com and Gamespot. It's been #1 a few times on Gamespot whenever new info or footage is released.

So, there is some major casual interest in this game. In the states at least.

Still my favorite screen capture of all time:

Back before SF4 even had it's own section at Gamespot.

The vast majority will never understand the game at all, which they actually point out in the article when they mention most people rarely stray from jump in rh, crouching rh.

I'm glad this article doesn't pretend to have a competitive players understanding of SF (which countless gaming review publications will once the console release drops) and instead presents the game how I think it should be presented: If you've always wanted to get into competitive fighting games but something was holding you back, there has been no better time to learn.

Yeah, for the past few years since EX3 came out, I've been falling under the impression that street fighter just hasn't been selling that well since sfa3.
EX3, CVS2, and MVC2 have all not even reached GH, if i can remember right. Have they?
I just feel that the major audiances would prefer the popoular FPS games and other, more mainstream genres as opposed to fighters. That's just how I feel. Now that VF5 and SC4 both already had gone gold, the stage could be set for SF4s success in sales.

Even though I haven't played the game, I still doubt that it is already Street Fighter top-tier being in its first iteration and all. That saying well I was pessimistic at first I'm really looking forward to this game and think that it will be a welcomed addition to the series. I think that I finally understand what Capcom was trying to do now.

Sorry i thought this was going to be meaningful.

More like a game magazine's site with the magazines scores posted. Edge is one of the biggest and most well respected magazines in the gaming community.

MVC2 had a good chance, but Capcom didn't print much. Then they lost the license around the same time.

VF5 was a total bomb sales wise. SC4 did really well though. I think SF4 is going to be one of Capcom's best sellers with the way they have been marketing it, and the amount of hype and interest from consumers.

People need to pay attention more.

The console version is basically gonna be the second version of SFIV according to the producer...

i think SF4 will do well also just because its the "come back" street fighter but if capcom makes another one anytime soon it wont do so well.

Depends on how soon, yearly like Madden? Probably not so well. Every 2-4 years like VF, TK, DOA, SC? Yeah it'll do well.

I trust SF games will sell as well as Tekken etc from now on, as long of course as they keep investing in them like they've done with SF4. SF just died out to the general public before because Capcom sticked to 2D when good 3D fighters were already showing up and stealing SF's throne, not because "SF3 was too complicated" or anything, just that all people wanted at the time was 3D games. Not to say that Capcom didn't make good 3D fighters of their own, Project Justice was hella fun, just that they didn't invest so much in marketing them (AFAIK).

Street Fighter and other 2D fighters died and a fair share of 3D fighters lived because all of those surviving 3D fighters started focusing on the console market more so then the arcade (or at least took the console release very seriously). Just look at Dead or Alive, Tekken, and Soul Caliber all of them focused much on the console releases. I can't really think of any 2D fighters that did the same especially as the entire genre was fading from popularity before even the PS2 hit. There are few other reasons as well but I don't really feel like getting into them.

Yeah, my hands were killng me from a previous jerk session, so I didn't feel like typing much.

Oh, so that was why MVC2 had such a limited stock. Shit, I thought capcom just gave up on that shit. honestly.

I aos agree with everyone who were saying how Capcom should focus on console releases from now on. Good point on how DOA, Tekken, and SC all had succuess without much of an aracde scene. I totally forgot about that.
Makes sense to why the recent SC and DOA games skipped arcade releases and went straight into consoles.

I don't understand how VF5 was a total bomb sales wise, though.
Didn't that game come out gold within the first few months of release? A few months back, they had a page on thier webiste announcing how they went gold. I'm not too familiar on how companies make money off of video games, but isn't gold=good?
I dunno.

Going gold means they made a final copy of their code, and are now able to start mass production.

Oh. My bad. Everytime I think sales in general, I think about record sales.
Can somone explain to me how the whole tihng goes when a certain game sells? I mean, what sales rank does it take before the company really starts getting money?

GH?

Guitar Hero status in copies sold or Greatest Hits?

IIRC the number required for a greatest hit is only like 150,000 sold. Which all three of them have done.

However compared to other fighting game launch titles for the PS2 they all sold rather poorly. Tekken Tag and Tekken 4 sold over 1 million copies, if you took EX3, CvS2 and MvC2 sales totals and add them all up, they'd be just shy of 1 million (USA only that is).

Or maybe capcom just doesn't want to bother with a GH verison of the games.

Or (lol last one), licensing rights prevent them from coming out with a greatest hits. EX3 has shared rights with ARIKA, CvS2 with SNK and MvC2 with Marvel comics.

Dasiatic
09-06-2008, 09:36 PM
Yeah, I meant GH as in Greatest Hits.
Thanks for the explaination. Where'd you all get your sales information anyway?
I would've guessed being a cashier for a game store grants you information on recent sales for games, but I'm not sure if they do that.

I didn't read the whole article, but of all gaming magazines/sites, Edge is probably the most respectable one. I could care less if IGN, Gamespot and all those other crap sites that rank every piece of shit nowadays on a 7/10 or higher scale gave SF4 perfect scores, this one actually counts.

Whats good Das? Been playing SF4?

I'm still kind of confused on what will determine whether SF4 will be a success or not. I know there has been a big push in the American and overall non Japanese market, but if it has the same kind of success 3s did in Japanese arcades, but makes a luke warm appearance in American retail stores, can we expect another hibernation of Capcom FG's?

Dasiatic
09-10-2008, 11:21 AM
SF4 has a similar responsibilty to Itagaki's first Dead Or Alive in regards to Capcom's fighting franchises. In other words, whether or not capcom releases more fighting games depends on the success of SF4. So it's sink or swim for their fighting IPs at this point.

Edit: I forgot about mentioning that other game, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, but that's for another market.

Whats good Das? Been playing SF4?

Yeah, I TRIED playing that shit. Niggas over at the chinatown arcade is hogging that shit BAD. Son, I went over there and shit. The placed smelled like it needed some deodorant badly.
So there I was, waiting my turn, watching some geeky looking niggas record matches with thier shitty camcorders.
After waiting long enough, I was like "fuck it" and left. I'll go there maybe today......or probably.......tommorrow......or never. Who knows?

Yeah I'm lucky more places are popping up with it in Cali. The first week or so at FFA the wait was like 40 minutes long, so trying out new character or anything was out of the question. I just played some 3s and bounced. You hittin up NEC or Seasons Beatings this year?
