I'm having a lot of trouble learning the useful techniques for this move. Outside of rolling after the elbow, any time I throw it out to cross up or approach it seems like I get hit or thrown out of it. How can it be used for setups, such as for wakeup or mixups? Is it closer to KOF style rolling or is it more of its own thing?

Personally I find rolling his best move.

If they are jumping towards me while I am in the corner I roll out to reset the fight. Depending on the attack I either do a light one and come up right next to them for a throw or a heavy one and get well clear. If they are about to hit me I use ex roll.

I never block a projectile, I always do a light roll under it.

Also on their wakeup if they like to dragon punch or ultra or some other heavy attack if you roll as soon as they wake up they will miss and be punishable.

Basically the only moves that can nail you while you roll are grabs and (assuming you are rolling right next to them) a spamming of light attacks.

If they grab you a lot when you come out of it try doing his command throw which has throw invul or if they are hitting you do the ex command throw.

Really I use it as a counter attack, so if I know they are doing to use a specific move I roll under it. As you use it more and more you learn whats safe and whats not.

Situational, but a common situation: Do low tigershots hit it?

^ i think if you time it right they will go through low tigershots. i too think its his best move, i do the same exact thing when i expect something on their wake up.

i dont think so, tiger uppercut does not hit it.

The roll rolls through low tigershots yeah.

Also obviously dont roll under a projectile if its going to set you up for a faceful of another one during the rolls recovery. Its pretty easy to tell if your roll is going to get you in hot water.

I've found that the best use of his roll is to cross up the opponent on wakeup, but farther than a universal throw range. I use this a lot because people then like to throw Abel out of his rolls or do like low forward xx fireball everytime you empty roll in front of them.

It's a pretty safe thing to do on their wakeup and it usually baits throws or dps. And then you can follow up with whatever combo you want. It's pretty safe overall too, except for long ass pokes.

Or you can be stupid like me and do unsafe shit like roll up to their face and ex tornado throw.

This I like doing the most because it takes balls and feels great when you pull it off.

Okay, after extended play today I see the period when you can't really be hit: While he's actually tumbling. When he's diving into the roll and getting out he's fair game, so I found rolling early to avoid fireballs is good. For mixups off it I was using it off blocked cr. mediums, sweeps, or jab strings as a crossup to tornado. Met with pretty good results too.

Thank you to everyone with the help.

just make sure not to roll too much.
being thrown out of roll pisses me off just as much as every other Abel user.
just a quick tip :]

You can roll to change direction if your are that close to someone. Just to throw it out. I've seen it done a couple of times. Without jumps or anything else.

^ what do you mean without jumps or anything? cuz say you are really close to your opponent and you roll in front of them. they can throw you out of it.

Hmm..after I think about it they only roll to switch position after the opponent's wake-up. haha

I believe he's talking about rolling to cross up on opponent wakeup. I've seen a few players use it.

yeah i noticed that when he posted. its really good to cross up charge characters twice. meaning roll twice so they at least lose the back + forward charge but remember they still have the down + up charge.

Quick question:

When trying to crossup after tornado throw or COD with rolls what's the fastest 2 rolls to do? I usually do rk roll then mk roll, but is there a combination that gives you more frames as they get up?

I think I'm being clear, if anyone knows I'm curious which they use. thanks

Any one know the timing on the roll after a down fierce elbow? I'm having trouble getting it to work. Thanks.
