So I have a friend who's opening a business that caters to nerds. Its pretty much a beer bar for people who like to drink and hang out, but don't like standard sports bars or bro bars.
Think something like a Dave and Busters but less about tricking your date into play video games, and more about a place where nerds can come together, drink a beer and play a game of MTG.
The idea got started when my friend realized that dozens of people were coming over to the house to drink and play video games or watch a movie. After a while we realized how many people needed a place that they could hang out at, but not feel like they are at a typical bar. More of a nerd lounge really.
We were thinking of hosting events such as...
Video game tournaments
Card game tournaments
Midnight movies
laptop/DJ shows
I'm throwing this idea up on the boards to see what suggestions you guys come up with. Now we know its going to be hard. Its a tight demographic, but we think there is enough people like us to support this kinda business.

This will only work if you can convince beautiful women to come.

I think you should get in contact with that bar that did the Mario and Portal drink night. They seem to have the right idea, however you could evolve yours to be even more than just a special vid game event.

Most bars I've been to already have a lounge that lets you do something besides drink or dance, and the MTG and game tournament part makes the whole thing sound like a rec center with alcohol. I don't know who would pay to go to a place like that, when there are free alternatives, and bars with the full 'bar experience' (sports on TV, pool tables etc) that you're trying to cut out.

It would be cool. Not sure if you could make it profitable, but if it wasn't ridiculously expensive (like most game lounges are) then I would go to something like that. When I say ridiculously expensive, I mean compared to something I could do for free at my house.

Lan centers are like arcades for people who don't play real games.
WHich is why most lan centers in Washington hold smash tourneys.
This idea is bad, nobody goes down to a bar to do the same crap they could do at home.
People go to bars for the environment and atmosphere. Bars are social and involve MEN and WOMEN. What your friend wants to open is a comic store with a back room arcade with tables in the middle while also obtaining a liquor license.

The bad points out weigh the good. I'd say don't do it. What's the life span of a bar anyway? How long until people realize they could do the same things at their own place...

I actually was thinking of the same idea, only have a blue lights theme and call it "Mana Bar" =D
If I had the resources to do this and some more ideas to cater to peoples interest.. I would ^_^

Man, to do this right you'd need a fairly big area. You don't want to cut out the bar favorites, because even nerds like to do that. Get some pool tables, some arcade machines, and then some tables for LAN and TCGs. Make sure to have a proper bar as well.
Oh, and the big key: Have free Wi-Fi. Place will be a fucking hit. I know if there was a bar here that had free Wi-Fi and GOOD arcade games (only bar with an arcade game here is one that has a golf game)...hell, I'd be all over that shit.
Also, get a hot fucking bartender. Besides, you're in San Diego...you can afford to work niche markets.
