Rufus MIA(Missing In Action)

it seems like people aren't playing as him as much i only say that
cause i've had a hard time finding any video's of recent rufus matches lately
and wondered what gives?
are all the rufus players taking a break or has rufus just died out as a character in the arcades?

There are still Japanese players who use him, most notably Kindevu, so videos of him pop up in the main Video Thread often enough.

I think the main problem with Rufus is that he has bad match ups against Ryu and Sagat, who are two of the most important match ups in the game. So by now the only people still using him are those who want to main him, who there aren't many of.

But yeah, I feel the same way as you, and its frustrating, since it seems that Rufus discussion on this forum has all but died out.

eh i guess they could find some things with rufus
but it just seems like the only rufus matches that will be uploaded are every so often japanese matches(that don't really come along much with rufus in it)or some sort of American Bout tournament or otherwise(which is even rarer)

I should be going to Arcade Infinity this weekend to practice my Rufus play. Actually it's more like getting started on my Rufus play since I am gonna start maining him. I'll see what I can do and next AI tourney I will be playing him so you can see those vids :)

I stopped playing for a Rufus as main because of Ryu's that basically mash out c.lp or dp's as soon as Rufus is airborne with a dive kick. Once the home version is released I might play around with him a little more.

His ultra setup's are just to easy to pass up. The Ryu, Blanka and Sagat match up's do suck for him, along with Gief. But ya people dropped him like crazy which is lame. Think I'll play around with him today, the ex. messiah on wake up is super buff.

Blanka is an okay match, once you get used to it, you just have to play a lot more defensively, unlike most of his other match ups where you can rush down without thought.

I used to HATE fighting Zangief, but once I learnt a couple of things, its actually one of the most fun matches for me. I think its an even 50/50 match where there are some situations where Rufus has a clear advantage, and some where Zangief has the clear advantage, and the whole match revolves around knowing these situations.

But yeah, Ryu and Sagat are pains because they can 1) zone him out and 2) use DPs to change the flow of the match once you get in. With most other characters, their best counter for holes in a dive kick rush down is simply to throw you, but if you anticipate that, you just dive again for big damage. Ryu and Sagat make this much harder since they can just Uppercut> FADC> Ultra you if they scout out a second jump. Ryu's close up game is scarier cause of the Ex Tatsu and the better cross up. Sagat's zoning is worse than Ryu's and just a nightmare to get past.

I think in order to play these matches well, a Rufus player needs to get his dive kick game down to a science. Knowing the exact distances to dive kick in and pressure with light attacks so that the frame advantage is always in your favour, and if Ryu, and Sagat try to bust out with SRK/Tigger Uppercut, they'll be the ones taking the big risk, not you. Two best moves for this are close stand B and far stand A. I find that that's the best way to beat these two, rather than randomly trying to bust through fireballs with Ex-Messiah kick.

Oh and Akuma. Possibly Rufus's worst match up. Fortunately good players don't use him as much as they do Ryu and Sagat, and scrub Akumas get peaced out FAST by any decent Rufus players.

I don't even think there's a lack of Rufus videos. Plenty of Rufus in Japanese tourney vids. Maybe he didn't feature in the last few Arcade Infinity tourneys, but that would hardly constitute 'a lack' of rufus vids.

Well there's your problem. Don't just check out youtube. Nohoho's blog (http://curryallergy.blogspot.com/) has a whole bunch of links to other places for SF4 vids.

Kindevu used Rufus to beat 3 Sagats and 1 Blanka (both supposed to be tough matches for Rufus, especially Sagat) to get into the top 8 at the recent Japanese national tournament, where he proceeded to beat a Dictator and a Viper before narrowly losing to Iyo's (the champ) Dhalsim.

So yeah, doesn't look like Rufus is going anywhere soon. Even his supposed bad match ups are winnable at a competitive level.
