Since there's a lot of people that want to change the art on their TE and Standard SF4 sticks, we can use this thread to show off what we're planning to use.
This is NOT a request thread.
Here's mine:

Accel Core - Very nice stick art! Can you point me in the right direction to learn how to do that "starburst" effect seen in the background?
Chunstoppable
02-07-2009, 11:10 PM
Chaghatai, thanks! :D
The "starburst effect" as you call it is really easy to create by doing the following...
a.) Make a new layer and fill it with clouds (Filter -> Render -> Clouds).
b.) On the same layer, add a lens flare (Filter -> Render -> Lens Flare). Use a 105mm flare and adjust the brightness to your liking.
c.) Finally, add a radial blur (Filter -> Blur -> Radial Blur). Set it to 'Zoom' and 'Best' and for the zoom amount, 60-75 should suffice.

Unlike you kings, I ordered an SE stick. Also, I'm a man of simple tastes, thus my simple design. The buttons, ball top, and shaft cover are all gonna be black and I'm thinking of painting the outside white border black also to finish that monochromatic feel. Anyway, here it is, love it or hate it.

Guys, is there a simple way to take an image, and put it on the TE Stick .psd template? Ive JUST got Photoshop, and I have never used it before - completely baffled!
If anyone has a link to a step-by-step guide to do this, Id be most chuffed. Have loads of images that I would like to have a play around with :)
Excellent work so far - the Vewlix one is brilliant :)

You can use layers - open up a new layer, put it over the template's layer(s, if there's more than one layer putit above all of them), and it will be over the template. If you want to see the template, set the layer to around 75% opacity (just remember to set it back when you're done, otherwise when you print it'll look a bit clear, and the template layer will show through)
This way, you can see where the art meets the buttons, etc.

How exactly did you add those outlines? I am having the hardest time with it.
Take just the rounded rectangular art, not the white edges on the side. Duplicate the layer, scale it down a little bit smaller than the original. Put a stroke on it with whatever color, then lower the opacity of the image itself so then the outline is the only thing showing. Then just align it so it is equal on all sides.

Rather than scaling the layer (which results in the curve looking wrong on the inside), a more accurate way is to use 3 same-sized rounded rectangle layers, ie:
Top layer - double click and give it a stroke of 3 pixels set to the inside, coloured black
Middle layer - double click and give it a stroke of 5 pixels set to the inside, coloured the same as the background
Bottom layer - double click and give it a stroke of 6 pixels set to the inside, coloured black
Then, set all 3 layers to have 0% 'fill' (top of the layers palette) to show only the stroke... you can then adjust the stroke widths to achieve the right thickness.

any one have the splash designs on buttons in psd?
this is nearly my done artwork mod, also i was thinking why try take off the artwork when you can laminate the new artwork and simply place it over the original and have the buttons and screws to hold it in place?
any 1 feel this idea would work?

Does anyone have any tips/tutorials/links for how to make the ink clouds a la SFIV? I'm trying to make a SFIV marquee/cpo/stick template, and want some massively high res/huge ones, but all the illustrator/ps stuff I can find is either completely flat black splodges or way too low res. Seems hard to make stuff as nice as Capcom have (big surprise there).
Example: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=6093237&postcount=7989 - the left hand side of the stick art.
The ink blobs on the SFIV Vewlix panel look pretty crappy in comparison, imo...
Cheers.

Fluxcore: You need watercolor stock photography. Most likely you'll have to pay for it. www.dreamstime.com is a good site - but it's pricey. www.gomedia.us has some watercolor packs which are more affordable - but they're probably larger in scale than what you're looking for.
limitedE: Np! :) Thanks for the kind words.

Draw a path in Illustrator, then brushes palette, click the arrow on the top right, then "open brush library" then "artistic" then "ink". It's hard to tell if these are the exact same brushes they used for SF4 official stuff, but they're pretty close. Could probably google search for illustrator ink brushes to find more variants.

Hey everybody, this is shidoshi, aka Eric from Play (the guy who did the "review of the SE FightStick for Joe Average" review). I thought I'd post my custom SE FightStick art, and early experience with trying to get it to come together, in case it'll help any other SE owners out. Hope you guys don't mind me posting this.
My Adventures in Modding the SE FightStick: Attempt #2
First attempt isn't even worth talking about, so we'll pass on that.
So the solution I ended up going with was a product called "lamilabel" from Kinko's. My initial idea was this: print the image on a full-sheet label, run in through the laminater (ending up with basically a laminated sticker), and go with that. Today, the person who helped me suggested these lamilabels, which are more of a pocket lamination-type product, but one that is made one side that peels off to be sticky. The reason I'm not so hot on pocket lamination is that typically it doesn't adhear as well to a sheet of paper, which is a shame because it is usually a heavier and more durable type of lamination.
However, this lamilabel stuff came out way better than I imaged, and doing the print as a standard color print versus printing in color to a full-sheet label, where the overall quality level drops a bit.
You can see the results below.
If you want to take this route, here is what I've learned below. I don't know the longevity of this lamilabel stuff, but it seems like it might be a decent solution. I put it straight onto the main stick artwork without taking it off, which I think will be a better idea then trying to take off the stock art. The stock art allows for peeling over the lamilabel if you want to, so that way you could easily swap out to a different image at a later date.
* Don't use the template as it current stands in regards to edges. Cutting to the set edges and then trying to get it to perfectly line up on the face is a real bitch. (As you can see in my photos below.) What I'm going to do is extend the edges a bit, cut to that size, stick the sticker on, and then do trimming there. Since the joystick's body by nature has a bit of a groove / edge around the face artwork, this worked well for the bit of trimming that I did do. So I think that for both the outer edge and around the controls, I'm going to try again, have it be a bit bigger than it should be, then trim afterwards for better results.
* Take off the white circles for where the buttons go. Keep the artwork full there, stick this on to the case, and then trim the button holes from the inside out. That way, your cuts will be perfect, it'll be far easier to cut out, and you know for certain that you'll have no white area on the artwork under your buttons.
Anyhow, as I said, I'm going to try another attempt at printing and putting on the artwork. Then I'll just need to order new buttons and a stick.

Would I be a total jerk if I pointed out a typo on your artwork? Yeah I would. But you said you were going to try printing it one more time, so... the last line of the text reads: In the end, the winner can look forward to being crowed the "King of Fighters."

Yeah, that's what remains to be seen. The lady at Kinko's who suggested the stuff to me said they use it for signs that are put on counters, and it holds up well, but we'll see. I used to work for Kinko's, but we didn't have this stuff back then, so I'm not really familiar with it.

Well, that text is supposed to be sort of "Engrish", so that spelling error is part of the whole thing.
The fact that I put "64-bit" instead of "24-bit", however, is not. *shakes head*
I might fix it some day, but for now, I just don't have the energy after it taking three attempts to get something I was happy with. *heh*
what type of file did you have them print your art off?
i.e. jpg,psd,pdf etc
300dpi CMYK TIFF file.

Lol TIFF files. Apple still trying to force those onto people?
And yeah, I'm pretty sure lami-label is a brand-name dealy from Kinkos. Apparently it's pretty new, but given how competitive things get, it might be worth checking if there's a competitor that offers the same service. You might not have Fedex-Kinkos in England, but you must have some kind of print shop there like an alphagraphics or the limey equivalent.

You mean Adobe.. right? Camera companies forced JPEG onto us, its no different really.
I still think CMYK JPEG is fine. I've printed artwork out as this file and it looks good. Plus its smaller and easier to send online.

Only .TIFF I've noticed on my mac is when you take a screen shot using the default print screen. I use a different program to take screen shots though.
Yeah def. PNG.. smaller, easier, transparent backgrounds, better quality. But they'll always be obsolete because within every 2 years a new format comes out lol.

Well, uhm, sorry that you don't approve of the file format I used. Being that I do a lot of stuff for print, and the steps in that process prefer stuff in TIFF format, that's just what I default to a lot of the time. PNGs probably win on size (for my test, it was like 2.5MB versus 3.2MB), but TIFFs can certainly do transparency, and I'm not sure what exactly "easier and better quality" mean in such broad terms.
And the default image format for Mac OS X is PNG. Used to be TIFF, yes, but not any longer.
shidoshi: Amazing work! You have helped me get a great head-start on doing the same mod! However, before I start I still have a few concerns. Would you mind answering a few questions for me?
1.) Which template did you end up using? How does the angle of the panel affect the size of the art that you print? In other words, since it isn't completely flat do you have to make your design slightly larger?
2.) From what I can gather, basically you printed it at the right size, but had problems trimming it around the edges. Do you think this is related to your cutting tool, printing material, or some aspects of the stick itself?
3.) Can you expand more on why you decided not to remove the stock artwork?
That's all I can think of right now. I'll be checking back frequently for any updates. Thanks!
EDIT: For those of you who are doing the seven button ones, aren't you going to have problems with laying the art down? Since you won't be using a hole plug the art will just be laying on top of the exposed hole.
I really want to use a seven button one but I can't figure out how make it practical. What am I missing?

heres an idea, plug one hole with a button plug, then place the art on top of it. that way there is support for the art. The button plugs dont really have any height to them but you might have to sand it down just a bit. Just an idea ;)

This is my first attempt at anything of this kinda sort, y'know... with the whole "do stuff to joysticks" and such. That said, it took me forever to find high enough res logos of MB, and even longer to cut them out letter by letter. That said, I'm a little unhappy with how the dust cover seems to interfere a bit. I was thinking if there was such thing as a clear dust cover....

That one was thrown together without even using my high-res assets - I'll be cleaning up the edges more in the final version - it's not so much that the lines are aliased, it's been blurred several timed - I simply left some of the sky in there when I clipped it out. That and the leaves get lighter green towards the edges, so it does look kinda strange against a darker background - it's why I put it behind one of the blue-wash layers.
And I know it sounds weird, but I kinda like the light spot near the very bottom - it's looks almost like a specular highlight to me so I left that one on purpose.
Anyway, this is more of a "proof of concept" before I make the final one. Most of the layers will be re-assembled from the full-resolution versions from scratch when I make the print version. Even in this version though, I didn't think the bamboo was as bad as you seem to be saying that it is. Thanks for that - I'll make sure to pay a close attention to that detail in the final version.

1.) Which template did you end up using? How does the angle of the panel affect the size of the art that you print? In other words, since it isn't completely flat do you have to make your design slightly larger?
Boy... I used whatever the basic template that was floating around was. I think the one linked in the official thread about the MadCatz stuff over in the Tech Talk forum.
2.) From what I can gather, basically you printed it at the right size, but had problems trimming it around the edges. Do you think this is related to your cutting tool, printing material, or some aspects of the stick itself?
I think the problem is, unless you're somebody who can hand-cut exactly along the edge, you're going to have the chance of the artwork not looking good in the end. One little mistake in a cut, and your art won't look like it's stock atwork (which is what I'd think the goal should be).
Plus, you know, any little thing about the printing process could get the sizing off just slightly as well. So, for many reasons, I think it just makes more sense to mod the template file to give you more art around the edges, and then trim it off afterward.
3.) Can you expand more on why you decided not to remove the stock artwork?
Well, two reasons. One, I thought it might be a real mess to get it off, and two, I'm the type of person who would rather keep the art on there should I ever one day decide I want to use it again. I also think keeping the stock art on will make it a bit easier to take my custom art off should I ever want to, which is another plus.
Somebody asked me in PM about getting the artwork positioned properly on the stick if you indeed make the borders a bit bigger, and since I can't send PMs yet, here's me reply:
Yeah, I kind of realized afterward that lining everything up might be a bit tricky. So, what I did was, trim to the very edge of the outer edge of the artwork except for the curves: this was okay, because since I had edited the template to give myself extra on all edges, then cutting to those edges wouldn't screw up the final trim.
Then, I cut the hole for the joystick to size (since that hole would be covered up), and used that hole as my first basis for positioning. I then tried to line it up so that, as much as possible, I had an equal amount of excess art on all four of the main sides. I peeled about an inch of the backing off of the upper-right corner, used scissors to cut the backing, and then stuck that corner on while being sure to hold the artwork firm into place. Then, since that corner was stuck, I could lift the art from the opposite edge and peel off the rest of the backing without losing my positioning.
My art is just slightly too far to the left, but in the end it isn't going to make much of a different I don't think. How exact you really have to be with positioning all depends on what you do with your art. For me, I had art around the buttons that really called for being centered. If you don't, then getting it exact won't be as big of a deal.

...seriously.
What do you mean by this?
Yes, I did make heavy use of the liquefy tool. That was the only way I knew of to get the design I had in my head into photoshop. I actually created the Akuma piece first some months back. I decided to make a wispy cloud effect for the night scene, but as I was making it the vortex like piece you see there popped into my head, and I spent time shifting the blackness and greys about to get to it. When I saw this thread, I decided to play with that background some more, and found that playing with colors and simple images that I could get decent stick art. Simple, yet effective. I'm just immensely pleased that I received compliments for some of them, considering that I have never received a complement for my visual creative endeavors. Thanks guys :)
Those designs you put up were cool, by the way. I love the four Kings one.

I haven't seen a lot of Rose love, so I thought I'd throw one together... I'm not going to pretend I can get my hands on a TE, so I went with the SE template.
I'd been dabbling for a few days, when time allowed, on a Rose theme, myself.
Mind you, it's not done, but this is the basic gist:

Sorry if this has been asked elsewhere, but why are people using the x-y-rb-lb/a-b-rt-rb layout? Wouldn't make more sense to go x-y-lb-rb/a-b-lt-rt and assign the buttons in SFIV's menu? I know its extra work but won't it pay off if you plan to use your stick intuitively w/ other games?
Bomberman
02-26-2009, 10:16 PM
Furinkazan I think this layout makes the most sense:
X-Y-LB-LT
A-B-RB-RT
But that one is good too. And yes, the default SF4 button layout sucks. It's designed for people using standard Xbox 360 and PS3 pads, which none of us are...

Ok, question, I apologize if it's really ignorant. Is there any reason none of you are swapping out the buttons for transparent ones with the art in the them? All the TE templates i'm seeing are really sick, but I think they'd be even nicer if if you made that swap so there weren't glaring holes in the work. Is that not doable, or is there some other reason most people aren't doing that?
This is what i'm talking about:

I think it's just dependent on the art. I'm still deciding on the buttons to use for my own TE but I won't be using clear buttons because the buttons are just covering some paint splatters.
http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9546/chunbwte.png
That's what I mean.
But seriously, now I'm reconsidering it.

Accel Core that design doesn't exactly beg for clear buttons. But drawings that take up the whole template - those definitely benefit from them.

Oh, I know that, I just like those clear buttons.
Toreus: Like Accel Core said, it depends on the art. I used to be a huge fan of clear buttons too, but now I am going more towards functionality and professionalism rather than design. Plus, not all designs look better with it.
