I am a ken player myself. I keep having trouble with this particular ken player at my local arcade.

What he does is this:
when I get knocked down, he walks right up to me. As soon as I get up, he does one of 3 things

1) throw me
2) H.DP
3) dash back and c.rk me

I am having trouble guessing/countering. I usually get thrown the first time, when I try to block throw the next time, I keep getting DP-ed or swept.

I am not a complete scrub myself. I have seen several decent players (using abel, ken, balrog etc) completely dismantling his tactics and winning without any major difficulties. And I actually have a decent record fighting these players when I play them instead. For example, the abel player destroys this ken and I beat this abel player 5 straight times before he got me once...

What am I doing wrong? Will I be able to counter throw with "back-forward +lp&lk"?

Thanks

he's just reading you well... which means he's figured out how you react to the mixup when your being pressured.

the flaw in his wakeup game is that fierce dp... block it and OWN HIM...HARD. dont just throw him, combo the shit out of his ass, preferably with ultra. if you guess dp and he throws you, you take not much damage. also you can tech his throw attempt.

so just block on wakeup, if something happens right when you get up it's either a dp or a throw wait a split second and go for the throw break. this protects you from BOTH the dp and the throw cause you paused before you attempted the break. so if he dp's you'll be trying to break as the dp is being blocked which means your only taking block damage and you get to own him when he lands. if he threw you, you will still break it.

if you block the cr.hk input towards plus mk to hit him during his recovery.

but to beat all his options heres how they break down:

1. throw (dp or ultra) dp is better as you can fadc it.
2.dp (block)
3.dash back and cr .HK (dp or block or dash back or focus)

its just a guessing game, but it's about how predictable you are when you get knocked down depending on how much initiative you had or didnt have.

generally speaking if a scrub gets knocked down after having been rushed down for a while there usually gonna pound out the dp on wakeup cause there scared and are desperate to get that nigga off them so they resort to there highest priority attack.

however if they got knocked down from a situation that they were winning or were even at it's less likely that they will go for a dp.

its still a guess, but your op can make that guess educated by reading the frustration level of your play.

dont be so scared of throws for one. and just block on the wakeup more if your constantly mashing on shit as you get up. throws dont do much damage, and even getting thrown 3 times in a row only does like a third of your hp. unless it's gief, in that case your screwed if he gets close and thats all there is to that.

if you're trying to get distance, you can jump backwards while mashing roundhouse, too.

obviously this depends on how close he is, but if he's trying for the throw, it'll get you a good amount of range. i do this on geif all the time just to get the hell away from him. I jump in roundhouse and then jump back out round house. they usually block the one, then try and grab, and by then i'm flying back out with my foot in their face.

also, given those three situations, you're likely to come out on top. if he's trying to throw, you nail him. if he dashes out to sweep, you're already in the air. if he DPs, you may exchange blows (which is better than just taking it to the face).

just take it slow. when you begin flailing around or start to panic is when they win.

BD on wakeup eliminates this threat completely, but if you think he's gonna uppercut, like the person above me said, just block and punish the hell out of him; Ultra if you have it, or an EX hurricane combo. Once you do that a couple times he'll never uppercut again.

The DP and the BD sweep are very poor tactics, so just block and take throws every once in a while until you master wake up BD.

Nice break down from the boyz^^
The above mention are very useful tips, just block on wake up, if he DP u punish, if he try to throw you counter tech out of it, if he back and sweaps you can still block it and counter or move back more. It is simple. For me playing a Ken player, onece I manage to get him down, he won't have another chance to get back up until I'm finish with him, but if he does then its about zoning him until u get him down again and remember Ken's hadou is very slow recovery so your jump in will most likely hit him if you time it right.

Blocking and then teching the throw on reaction is your best option. If you can't tech the throw on reaction, you should work on that in training mode, but in the meantime you should try doing a focus back dash to get out of there.

Thanks for all the tips

now what if the other player is using someone with a command throw?

I was playing against abel today and he was using a similar tactics....I block on wakeup and I was able to tech his throw attempts. But I kept getting thrown by his command throw (the hurricane throw?) since I can't tech/block a command throw

Against Abel/Zangief, my next option would be be to jump backward and button-mashing roundhouse or back-dash?

with able I'll throw out a poke or something depnding on whether he has any meter built up.. Zangief on the other hand I just get the hell out of there how ever I can. This usually means just jumping backwards for me, but against him.. anything to give you space is fine I think.
