ive been playing sf for a long time and have never touched a guide. ive done pretty well playing through experience, but can never beat my buddys gief. Popped in sf4 last night and got ripped by my buds gief. He would knock me down then wait for me to get up and throw me as im gettting up. I would always be mashing jab to try to hit him b4 he gets me, but now he has the EX throw. What do i do against him?

Thanks ahead of time for the help

Backdash or lariat on wakeup. Not 100% sure about lariat though. Or try to jump away..

Well, the title fits anyway.

green hand is so dumb now and SPD is alot better. I don't ever remember gief being as fast as he is this time.

SOOOOOOO.....

I don't think he can be safe poked at aside from fireballs at full screen. I've been grabbed out of alot of whiffed pokes from stupid range.

....actually I feel like I get grabbed for trying anything on the ground. Any advice?

you cant really do much normal poke strings on gief. trust me tho hes not as good as everyone is making him out to be. he really has to rely on his ground gsme and not jumping around tryin to spd at every opportunity

That's really all he needs, SPD and Lariat are so beastmode now that against most average players you can win by spamming Russian Helicopters and SPD'ing them out of everything.

I am having trouble with a Zangrief who I came across @ the GameStop Tourney
I use Ken so when I do a Shinruken , He waits for me to come down and with perfect timing he grabs and punishes me with a pile driver, When I jump in he does a Lariat and when I keep distance and send Fireballs he lariats thru them and does a Green Hands to shorten the distance between us.. Someone said to play with Abel to stop him but Abel is not my kind of guy..Confused need help I know the only way is to do a Shinryuken Cancel into a Focus Attack and link to Super but .....this is easier said then done

You should never be doing fierce dp. And never throw a hurricane kick either... you'll pretty much always take heavy punishment for those. Try dashing in and out and zoning Gief. Its a pretty tough match up for you.

QFT... whiffed fierce DPs with Ken are just begging to be punished. Just because his hand lights up doesn't mean it's more effective. Your mid-punch DP is a much better bet, but against Zangief you should avoid using them at all costs. Also the fact that Ken's Hurricane will never score a knockdown means you're asking to get SPD'd the second you land even if you connect.

Zoning is the answer. I find Chunners is best at this from my experience, as her standing fierce and roundhouse are very effective at keeping him at bay. Plus if he manages to back you into a corner you can always jump off the wall to attempt an escape. Beware though, he can lariat you as you come down so play smart.
Wake up EX spinning Bird Kick also helps you avoid the mighty cross-up game that Gief has. Never bother with her super, EX moves are the way forward.
Use LP Kikoukens at range and time your charges well, the second you see him going for a lariat to evade the fireball rev up your Ultra. Sometimes his lariat has knocked me out of my lunge, but it only happens like 8/10 times.

I'm no pro, but this is my advice from playing this game extensively and watching tons of match vids. This strategy works well for me.

I've noticed that gief is quickly becoming the new scrub favorite.

tru, but it still takes a good player to really be effective.

Is it just me, or is fighting gief impossibly hard when learning a new character?

Impossibly hard indeed.
But possibly the best way to learn your character.

definitely not.
i have seen 5 or 6 good giefs on xboxlive, and maybe one who was actually obviously a beginner..

scrubs => shotos/blanka. (and i didn't say shotos/blanka => scrubs)

Zangrief is no longer a real threat if I use Ryu
Use:
Fireballs
EX Fireballs in the middle of a Lariat or at the end of a Spinning Backhand
Roundhouse Kicks
Use your Special and time it so that he cant lariat out of it

Don't Use:
Hurricane Kick
Dragon Punch
Throws
FootSweeps

Basically beginning of the match start fireballing away and when he gets close jump back and fireball away. If he has you backed up in the corner when till he grabs or punches and then you can either jump and come down with a kick or jump of the wall to get some distance or hurricane kick to the other side of the screen for even more distance.
When he misses a grab make him pay for it. Use the EX Fireball for the Spinning Backhand which will knock him down. Dont attempt to throw Zangrief unless u know what ur doing and no footsweeps
