View Full Version : On Wakeup: Options?

Just curious with Abel what people are doing on wake up. As he doesn't have a shoryu or anything sometimes I feel very vulnerable on the ground. Is the best option to roll out immediately? Obviously the "best" option depends on the situation but in general lets say to avoid a shoryu, a grab, basically anything on wake up what are the options?

In my experience I have been either jumping back with mk or blocking and depending on the character either blocking and using my jab to give me time to back up or jab command throw (worked once with gief). Very difficult with shotos. I'm open to suggestions as well.

Yeah I too end up jumping back and throwing out the straight in the air pretty often as a way to get to some kind of safety.
It kind of sucks that all my experience against people who want to win is against Ken, Ryu, or Sagat. I have plenty of other games against competent friends using many other characters but it isn't the same. They won't spam a move because it is working. We play more to learn new things and experiment, not to win. Online is my only real way to play "for serious" but it is all just... Ken.

Roll works for me often, probably not a great idea to use against grab characters though.
Other options are backdash, jump back, block, and EX-Rekka.

Definitely roll is your best option most of the time i'd say.
C.mk is a fantastic anti-air against late jump ins as well. It doesn't look like it will hit but it's actually very reliable.
With c.mk Abels anti air game is much better than you might imagine.

Yeah totally agree with c.mk. I usually use it as late anti-air and it often catches people off guard.

Bear in mind that you can attack the roll with a c. kick so don't use roll from wake up too often if the player is any good.

Depending on where the opponent is, I sometimes do an EX command grab. Land it once on wake up and you're pretty much free next time you're knocked down.

If you're gonna do that, though, watch out for people who jump up just as you get up and people who do cheeky jab shoryukens on your wake up.

most of time, i do ex command throw if someone is on top of me until they learn not to stand next to me or to jump
if they're trying to cross up, i just roll out of there
for people trying to focus attack, either throw, ex cmd grab, or backdash
for ppl doing meaty attacks, focus backdash works ok, although i don't have the greatest success with this.
i tend to have the most problems with ppl standing right next to me and then jumping straight up right as I get up. i've gotten better at looking for that and not wiffing with ex cmd grab, but i don't seem to have a good option for punishing it. sky grab seems to miss mostly and back dashing, jumping away, or rolling under them kinda works but i haven't really found something that works that well. any suggestions for that?

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I feel like the Abel section has a pretty good and competent group of players.
Also just to add randomly. Daaaamn buffering the command grab feels sick. I love coming in with the knee from above making them likely block and then as soon as I hit the ground grabbing their ass. Feels amazing when I pull it off (Which is getting ever more consistent).
Edit: Also in response to people jumping straight up beside you, c.mk like spicy said and also i'd assume crouching fierce would do nicely as you could follow up with a sky grab.

You can but only the first hit will connect since your opponent will be air hit and fall backwards.

this is from the japanese wiki:
anti-crossup option select:
input 236321+PP,4+P.
you will either get EX rekka (guard point), or, if they cross you up, EX command grab (invul startup). i haven't tested it thoroughly, so i can't say if it's useful or if it even works. it sounds great on paper though. and yes, 236321+PP will give you a rekka. crazy SFIV input.
