I need some help. I have a friend who likes to turtle a lot and spam jabs when you get close. Here is a break-down of his fighting style:

1. Match begins.
2. He hits you a couple of times to get you bar below his.
3. Runs the rest of the match to keep you coming to him so he can get counter hits.
4. Will bull dog until he gets the lead, runs when in the lead.
5. Will spam throws if he can't get lead.

Sounds simple but is hard to fight against. Any help would be much appreciated.

First off; who does he play as?

I'd recommend trying your EX-Rekka, as it has armor properties, it can be very useful.

Blanka, Dhalsim, Ken

Oh yeah forgot to mention he likes to keep you off balance with cross-ups with Blanka. Its hard to adjust to him cause if you start winning he quits playing if its just me and him.

If he's stuffing your throws with jab spamming you can beat it quite easily with EX throws. You'll grab him right through his jabs because the throw has some invincibility frames.

Try f.mk -> dash forward -> EX throw

Incorporating EX throw in to your game will make your Abel twice as hard to beat. If he wises up and starts reversaling then block it and punish with a hurricane throw and if he wises (again) up and starts jumping away you can chase after him by jumping forward and heavy punching just as you leave the ground.

Maddens post reminded me: Don't forget that EX wheel kick can often catch fleeing opponents, especially in corner. Great for catching people who like to jump away on wake up too.

But you're really better off not playing with someone who quits when they're losing.

What type of runner is he? Does he get himself in the corner a lot?
are jump ins by you constantly beingstuffed?
are YOU throwing back?
how well do you trust your execution (can you do abel's moves consistently?)

1. Stays out the corner just outside you attack range, will sometimes get trapped in the corner
2. 70% of my jump ins stuffed. not trying to jump in but he leaves very little options. its hard to beat his footsie due to reasons i mentioned
3. Yes.
4. Yes when I have time to think, or on a stick. Better on stick.

He is reall y good at doing stuff to throw of you timing. Thanks any more advice is welcome

f.mk has huge range, it's faster than most sweeps and fireballs and outranges most other attacks. This move is a big asset to Abel that you should be using as often as possible. It goes further than it looks like it would.

Input it as this..

f.mk, f

If the mk doesn't connect you will whiff as normal. If it does connect you will dash in. Try to nail him with just one of these and your problem is solved. The link to HP off of this is pretty hard, I would just c.jab out of and try to mind game into throws.

If he fireball spams, roll forward to f.mk and then you're in (as long as you connect.)

Another little trick, roll so that you land right in front of him and go straight into EX grab. If you time it right and he tries to stuff your roll with c.jabs or c.lks you will get him every time.

Get wheelkicks to connect at max distance where they're safest. Predict hadoukens and punish with EX wheelkicks, Supers (only goes through fireball if you use HP to initiate the super) and ultra.

If he spams fireballs from full screen, here's a neat little trick. If you time your ultra so that your input occurs while his arms are still out from the fireball, you can skate across the entire screen and connect. That's right, full screen. I can't do this on reaction, but if you predict a fireball remember that the ultra will always make it far enough to punish. (thank Bustabust for first posting this trick on the forum.)
