View Full Version : Looking for XBL C.Viper Mentor

Similar to a thread I posted in the Cammy forums that helped me and a bunch of other Cammy players get together to help each other out.
I'm trying to decide on if I want to main Cammy or C.Viper but right now my Viper is horrid so I'm just looking for some good Viper players on XBL that are willing to help me out and show me some easy combos/strats/etc.
There is only one C.Viper mentor in the mentor thread that is from the US so I was hoping I could find a few more here that may not have seen that thread or just don't want to take on THAT many students. Just send me a friend request on XBL, gamertag is same as my SRK tag.

I was originally thinking about putting my name up there but I realized it was too early for me to really start teaching people how to play C.Viper until the game came out. There was still a lot that I was learning at the time but even as of today it seems a lot of people are struggling to even get her basics down. I guess I'll end up adding my name to the mentor's list once I get some free time. As a new and hungry to learn C.Viper player, I'll add you to my list so when I find some free time we can get some practice games in.

^Think you could add me too? I'm the only other Viper I've seen online, so it's hard to play a better Viper and try to learn things from them when they don't exist lol.

Is there a mentor type program at srk? That's really awesome.
I would love to be mentored in both Street Fighter and with CViper.

I mean, if someone like DJ isn't around, I can teach some BASICS. Like BASIC BASICS.
I'm not on Kryo's level yet, but I have to be pretty soon. I gotta smash up Kensou one of these days and to do so, I have to beat DJ, Kryo, and Kunai first.

When doing the challenges I can usually get them down, same with trying combos in training mode. When I play online though, all that goes out the window and I resort to countering with specials (especially as Cammy, I basically only use arrow, spike, and hooligan when I play with her online). But, this is my first SF game since SFII on the SNES and first fighting game since SCII on the PS2, so it's gonna be a while for me to get everything down so I can use them in real matches.

Yeah, that's something that I can help out with. A large part of Viper's game is punish and wakeup. I can help you out with matchups and how to get better at them, but there's only so far that I can go with that right now. Like, I know these threads like the back of my hand that this point, but I know how hard it is to make practical use of the information. Maybe I can help you out with making use of it yourself.
I'm usually up for anything, so just let me know.

My best advice for implementing combos you can do in practice mode into your online game is figure out practical starts to them. I know when I first started messing around with Viper in training mode seeing what kind of combos I could do with her I didn't really think about if the starting move was legitimate for online purposes. So early on I know a lot of the combos I came up with started with EX tk, which is ridiculous cause you can't hit with that move consistantly in the middle of battle enough to be a legit combo starter, even if it is a great start up option IF you get one off cleanly. Even ones that started with Ex Seismo are not that great for me cause even with decreased start up time compared to the normal version it's not ideal. So figure out what normals you are comfortable comboing out of.
My skill level is limited as well, I'm still trying to overcome Viper's intial learning curve as well as implementing her feints into my game. I'd love to spar with someone that's even just a solid Viper, any tips or help from sessioning would increase my skill level definitively I'm sure.
I only ran into a Viper once before, they had a few of her tricks down pretty solid, specifically SJing into her BK crossup on wakeup, but even this person wasn't that great. Only serious skill I see from Vipers is watching vids on youtube.

It's nice to have a forum to talk to others about Viper...that's for sure. I'm trying to main Viper, and am doing so-so as of right now.
I've got some of her combos down solid, but linking to her Super Combo has been difficult for me. I often resort on hoping a Heavy Thunder Knuckle will juggle a jumping opponent so that I can catch them with her Super while they are floating back down.
I've also been resorting to using her super meter for the EX Thunder Knuckle hoping to stun...then follow with her Ultra. It just pisses me off when I get hit by Ken's EX Shoryuken...as it seems like it takes almost a quarter of my life off! What are her best EX moves in some of your opinions and what have you had the most success with?
...and for some reason, I still cannot combo her Burning Kick after I EX Siesmo! Is it super strict timing or what? Seems like I'm either too late with the BK, or I simply hit them mid-air with a kick.
I'd love to play against some of you guys when you have free time. I'm a recent victim of a layoff, so I have LOTS of free time as of now. lol.

My name isn't on any mentor list, but I've already had people asking me to teach them Viper. How can I teach someone when I'm learning how to play the game?
Well I personally don't volunteer. And from now on those that ask I'll redirect them here, thanks.

It seems to me that the main issue is that since no one ever actually sees a Viper online it's impossible to even watch bad Viper's to get an idea of what not to do, let alone good Vipers.
I haven't played one yet myself. Other than the fact that I come here to try to get ideas on how to play her properly I would have sworn I was the only person who even bothered to play Viper. I do play in the morning, though, so that might have something to do with it.
I applaud anyone taking up the mantle of mentor to help out, but I just worry that the severe lack of Viper players is going to limit the effectiveness of the idea.

There's an inevitable lack of C.Viper players online right now due to the fact that people are new to the game itself and the last thing they wanna be doing is picking a character that is almost completely foreign from a shoto. The console release is giving a lot of non Japanese players who aspire to get good with Viper the first real chance to do so. Meaning it'll take some time before you go online and actually find anyone playing C.Viper. Let alone playing her remotely correctly. She's really a character that's best suited for fighting game nerds who want something different yet powerful when mastered.
YouTube has plenty of good Viper players to research from. Why look for a zero player base online when the Japanese have already put together some good stuff? Hell...even some of the solid US players like Kensou and Kyro have some vids that you can learn from. I've based a lot of my play from researching vids already.

Yeah, that could always be a problem. The only real counter to that, is that we have really, really good mentors here who can teach others and in turn make others mentors.

I make it a point to never play random people online through player or ranked matches considering I normally never get anything from it. Tried doing it on HDR and never got anything other than typical shoto scrubs (ken flowchart all day). I'm not interested in dealing with the same shenanigans in 4 so I normally only play against people on my friends list.

Not me that's for sure. Not after pretty much solely playing Ibuki in tournaments for 3 years straight. A lot of people have asked me what other characters I use cuz they know I use Blanka in ST and what not but...there's just no way. C.Viper is way too much fun and hard times are just part of getting good with a complicated character. It's like being able to use a Marvel or Guilty Gear character in a SF game. Tons of fun and tricks. All of the other characters are just "been there done that" to me. Even if I were to have more success using other characters it just wouldn't be as fun. Especially since C.Viper has nowhere to go on the tier list but up at this point. Al kinds of new stuff being discovered with her.
To anyone who gives up easily or is not looking to seriously dedicate themselves to C.Viper then yeah...I would recommend picking up some extra characters so you don't throw chairs over missing your execution in a combo that could have won you the match. People who are looking to exploit the best out of a unique character and will do what it takes...she's here for us.
To deal with the shoto scrub problem I've cut off anybody on my friend's list who isn't a SFIV player. My friends list is 100 percent STREET FIYTAH FO! Anybody who is online on my list is playing SFIV it's hilarious. So I always potentially have a decent player to fight against. Plus I'm pretty popular on the forums so even if I do create a random match I occasionally get players on SRK seeing my name and challenging me. The challenge options in this game apparently allows anyone to challenge you to a fight even if they aren't on your friends list. I've had new SRKers challenge me who were definitely not on my friends list.

I doubt there is anyone who doesn't play another character at all. I dabble in a lot of fighters. Viper just holds my interest more than most. I'm probably only at just above basic level as it is, but that doesn't stop me from going online (ranked match even) and getting destroyed all in an effort to get better.
I don't think it's a bad thing to have someone else that's easier to pick up waiting in the wings. Sometimes you need to just have a good match without the frustration. Sometimes that's what you need to refocus. I'll pick up Cammy and Vega (Claw) every so often just because I like to play them. If I'm feeling lucky I'll throw in Zangief once or twice. Inevitably, though, I'll go back to Viper. Back to the grind. Still the payoff will be so worth it.
I think some people who are just starting out on Viper are getting the wrong idea here. It's been covered that Viper is certainly not a pick up and play character. You can play someone who knows here well but that's not going to make you better. I'm sure when most people looked at her move list and saw how simple and easy here stuff was it seemed like such a piece of cake. I know I did. Viper is not an overnighter. You WILL be spending a ridiculous amount of time playing her. I've only been playing since the XBox 360 release but I know I've gotten better simply by going online. Even if all you're seeing is Shoto clones if you can't beat them consistently you need to worry more about the basics then the advanced tactics that you would get from a "mentor". While having one would be optimal I would say for those who don't have that chance to really just work on your execution and timing. There are quite a few of her moves that are very strict in that regard.
I truely hope that we do start seeing some high level Viper players on Live... or any at all. It just seems like such a waste to a great character to relegated to the forums at SRK.

It'd be silly to drop the character I have the most fun playing with in the game. I've been interested in Viper since day one of the game's release in arcade (when she was considered a bad character).
Granted, I originally was going to main Cammy and keep Viper as a secondary when console came (since I mained Cammy in ST and HDR) but I found Viper to be way more fun to play than Cammy. Now Cammy is occupying my secondary slot.
To add, after seeing what she's capable of through JPN match vids, I'm even more determine to continue playing and get better with her.

I'll be playing other characters but only for the same reasons I did in 3S. Honestly I could beat random players in 3S with like more than half the cast. My Alex even is almost good enough to enter into a serious tourney. Using other characters gave me a mindset for how those characters were used and I could apply that when I used Ibuki to improve my game with her as well. When it comes to tournaments though...Vipes till the end.
The thing is it will be hard to find people outside of SRK using Viper at a real serious level. It was the same way with Ibuki in 3S. The knowledge and application that was required to use her was described in detail pretty much only on SRK (which very few seriously devoted the time to read) and even then you still had to watch a lot of vids to see how different matchups work and then apply that stuff in real matches until it made sense. Same with C.Viper. With all the work that I'll be putting in to get good with her in the first place I won't really want to use anyone else in tournaments.
The biggest reason isn't even really due to the fact that she'll be my go to character to win a tournament...but simply because I'll have the most fun using C.Viper in a tournament since she fits my style and what I need to have a good time. Overall I play for fun even when it comes to tournaments and Vipes is fun.

Viper is extremely fun, would you guys still be playing Viper if she wasn't rated highly in the Tougeki? There's a point where some players prefer to win over having fun and enjoyment, because winning is what's really fun to them(and shit yeah winning is fun). This is still a game.

That's what turns most people on to Viper. Vids of Viper crushing someone by confusing them like crazy. Seems to have an answer for everything. Then the hiccup comes with the timing and execution of the moves, combos and so on. I do believe we will have a lot of Viper players eventually, but as DevilJin said the game is so new it's gonna take a bit.
Back on topic, I'd love to play even some of the beginner Viper players who are looking to be mentored, just to avoid seeing another Shoto for a bit. I won't be able to teach much but sometimes you can learn execution through just playing though.

Forgot all about that. That came out kinda recently, didn't it? I more or less assume any Sagat I see online is in the same boat. Not fair, but I only know one guy personally who's played Sagat since he became a playable character.
Anyone who's in it to play her because she's so high tier is quickly going to switch to him anyway since he is much easier to pull it all off with.

I see that happening in JPN. Not so much in the US (not until it happens in JPN at least) considering the US has been far more ignorant to her than JPN in favor for other characters. I think Viper isn't as bandwagon friendly as, say, Sagat or Zangief.
In regards to the tier list, I already stated I've been interested in her since the beginning when she was considered low and planned to main her until console where she was originally going to be my secondary. Funny how that turned out considering she's still my main. When I found out about her most recent tier ranking all I did was laugh while everyone else was in disbelief.

I'd be playing Viper if she was two spots away from the bottom...that's how fun she is for me. For me it's more about how much I like the character's options than where they are on the list. Ibuki was probably like the 11th best character in the game and I stuck with her when it was clear that YCK dominated tournaments for the game. There's no way I could let go of Vipes when there's a clear opportunity for her to be close to top of the cast. Or at least better than Ibuki was in 3S.

Viper is just an incredibly fun character to play, when you get momentum on your side and things start clicking you can really light things up and keep you opponent guessing. At the same time if you are just a little out of it execution wise you could find a chair in your window. The satisfaction of beating a competant player using an easier to play character is always nice. Also eventually once you get over Viper's learning curve and become a viable player with her you are gonna be a lot of peoples nightmare just for the rarity of facing her. People aren't gonna want to face good Vipers because as it looks she is actually gonna garner a favorable tier on top of just a lack of knowledge on how to fight her. People would feel much more comfortable fighting another Ryu even if the Ryu was slightly better, just cause they are confident in knowing what to expect/is capable from a Ryu player.

My thoughts exactly, good post! It seems like half the time I fight Ryu/Ken/Akuma online, the opponent has no clue how to deal with Viper. Probably because like myself, I unfortunately play against Ken/Ryu/Akuma opponents online most of the time! Sometimes I feel like I know every shoto strategy in the book...without EVER playing as one of those characters. lol

Beating Ken, Ryu and Akuma nubs and scubs is pretty much as easy as blocking more than they do. You can almost be able to do nothing execution wise that's required to get good with Viper and you'll still win just by blocking and punishing DP's with basic combos until they die.

I wanted to main Cammy and have C.Viper as my alt, but Cammy just doesn't have enough options. Cammy is too easy to beat by anyone who knows how to crouch block. They ruined hooligan and SBF and the only great move she has can only be used while jumping forward normally.
I liked C.Viper from the start when I had to use her to unlock Cammy. She seems fun to play so long as I can practice for a month or two to get her execution down.

What would really help me is if someone could find and/or make a video showing their joystick as they play. This alone would help me immensely as I am much better at visual learning than I am at following text based instructions. I was the same way with rock band and people put videos showing their fingers/drums in sync with the gameplay and this made me able to play any song out there. Hopefully the same holds true for performing combos.
I can learn counters and what to do in certain situations on my own. It's the timing and execution on combos that elude me. Performing a c.HP, TK Cancel, Ultra combo is impossible for me right now and I feel that seeing someone moving their stick to do this would help me immensely.

That's how I felt at the GC tourney. I had not played on a stick in a million years and here I am, trying to play Viper on a stick for the first time. I lost. Picked up either Ryu or Ken (can't remember which one I used) and rocked shit out. Not because of lag, just learning curve.
And yeah, I've definitely found that any real input lag will completely destroy Viper and leave her with normals, which... aren't all that.
I need to figure out what the best solid normal stringss are to keep the flow going. Relying on specials is kinda predictable and annoying when you have input lag going.

Man, viper online is hair pulling. Any amount of lag just completely fucks me up :(
Truth, granted I normally never experience such lag to the point in which it was completely unbearable.
However, 2 days ago I played a friend from home in PA online considering he and my other friends were playing at home. All the online matches I've had with other friends, prior to this match, were bearable but holy hell did it lag when I was playing that day. It lagged so bad I thought I was playing Soul Calibur IV online again.
Dealing with Zangief and Sagat ON TOP of lag is an absolute nightmare. Mashed reversals hurt like a bitch. I couldn't do c.lk, s.lk, c.mp, MP TK without being reversal'd since the lag skewed my timing on the s.lk, c.mp link. Also sucks that c.mk, MP TK isn't a true block string.

I think the netcode for this game is really good. As I mentioned before, I've only experienced lag that one time a few days ago out of the time I've played online and I can only assume it was because someone was probably DLing something online on his end while playing me (considering he wasn't experiencing any lag at all).

Super new to the forums...as you can tell by my join date... but I would love a mentor for Viper. I pretty new to street fighter and have probably put in less than 72 hours playing street fighter over my life time...but for some reason I really want to be great at SF4 =/. I probably shouldn't play with such a demanding char but I've been making a lot of progress so far. Would just really like to understand ways to approach, bait and react in the corner better. Why I keep picking this woman... I have no idea. I get tossed around all day but it is worth it when I finally do some flashy combo.

I'm up for some mirrors when I have time.
PSN: TheAngery1
I make it a point to never play random people online through player or ranked matches considering I normally never get anything from it. Tried doing it on HDR and never got anything other than typical shoto scrubs (ken flowchart all day). I'm not interested in dealing with the same shenanigans in 4 so I normally only play against people on my friends list.
My PSN is TostitoSalsa and I exclusively use C. Viper as I find she's the most interesting and fun to use character IMO. I'd be glad to mirror match if you wanted. I'm somewhat decent with her so we could definitely learn from each other. Just add me if you wish and I'll be sure to accept. Until then!

i play viper cause shes fun. not cause of wherever she is on the tier list
i had to do a double take when i heard this morning that she was considered top
i suck at street fighter in general, and shes a hard character, so ive already prepared myself for the fact that i may get raped for months until i get her down.
XBL: GameDragoonX. if anyone wants to ever play me. Im not that good but a bad viper is better than no viper right?

I played DownSideUp today and I was surprised at the good connection. It's only the 2nd time I had an overseas connection where I could actually do Burning Kicks without feeling like I'm on the moon. It was listed as a 2-bar connection, but it was almost as good as a 4-bar connection.
I don't know if you really learned anything from me today, but it was fun nonetheless.

I learned your Viper is a lot better than mine! Also just general approach stuff, was nice to see a smart Viper. I'm sure you noticed, but I'm not very aggressive during wake up scenarios which is stupid for the character, so it's good to see the different options I could be using that you used.
I agree connection was real good, I had no problems.

I still have yet to see/play another Viper online yet. Added a couple of people in this thread today and hoping to see a few of you online. Also happy to hear overseas connections running so well. It might be an exception rather than the rule but its great to know it is a possibility.

I'm going to be going online in about 30 minutes to play some games. I haven't been on in a while cuz I'm usually busy with my offline friends. I'll send you a friend request when I get on. My connection is usually better if I play in the basement but I'm too lazy for that and I like the HDTV upstairs better.

I'd love to play some better Viper players one of these days.
I've only played one other viper player and he was much, much worse than me which is saying a lot (I'm pretty terrible).
The connection gauge isn't always to be trusted, I've had one-bar games that play better than three-bar games and no-bar games that are as good as a four-bar game.

Actually glad I didn't play anyone in my most recent session. I felt like I regressed and had to fight with the controller to get out consecutive HP Thunder Knuckles. I'm starting to think my Fightpad is cursed.

Finally had a chance to play another Viper. Played about a dozen games with DownsideUp. It really does help just to play someone else that uses the same character. GG's, man.
On a side note Downside, I wasn't kidding when I said I had just gotten down the timing on the High Jump Cancel Burning Kick just 20 minutes earlier. Couldn't do it 100%, but it had never worked before anyway so it's all good.
Still hoping to catch some of you other guys that I haven't played yet that I've added to my Friend List. Don't much care if I lose as long as I get to see some more Viper action. Every little bit helps.

Hello there!
This topic seems perfect to introduce myself.
I play on Live, and even before I got this game, I was intrigued to play as C Viper - and I had some really rough start, but her moves are really great, and I love to discover how to counter other players's moves with hers.
So I am usually using Viper around 90% of the time (100 hours played, 60% of this is with Viper) - and if anyone wants to learn the sole "basics" (ie. anti-air usage, what to do when opponent starts spamming fireballs, etc.), I would be glad to help.

Havnet met many Viper Players in my time playing street fighter 4..met 2 lol
i have 2 good friends up in scotland that i play agenst on Xboxlive, they trash me with vega and gief, they do tell me what im doing wrong and what i need to improve on which is great becoz im actually learning from my lose's.
But i need some hands on with a Viper player that can show me a few things while in party chat giving me tips and tell me what im doing wrong with Viper
Since SF4 was announced iv always liked the look of viper and iv stuck with it, most of my other friends are just Akuma players and stay away from viper becoz shes "too hard to play with" but thats whats made me stick with her.
like to thank the website for actually having a Viper section on the forum making it really easy to find alot of cool tips
but yes if theres any viper players out there who would like to teach me a thing or two i would really be thankful.
right now im just trying to get down the 3rd hard trial Lol..

Recently sold my HRAPEX because I completely suck with a stick, moreso than the pad if that's even possible, but I plan to get a TE later on and go back to the suckage.

Hey guys, I've been perusing the C Viper forums a bit to help me get better, but there's only so much I can really put to use here :p C Viper was actually my first character choice (terrible idea, I know, I was inspired when I watched a Japanese tournament with Daigo and the person playing Viper made me fall in love with her playing style, little did I know how much work it'd take ^^). I really need to get the hold of some Street Fighter and Viper basics (I've gotten my execution to about 65%, still workin on it).
But, if anyone would be willing to help, hit me up on QuasiTimeFriend, thanks in advance ^^

Mystic...if I get online today I have you on my fake friends list. When you send someone a message it's basically an extra friends list spot. I can see when you're online now and I'll send you an invite when ur on. Which is very convenient cuz Microsoft is really stingy about the 100 friends thing. My mic port didn't seem to be working last night so I may not be able to give you live commentary but I'll mess with it. Otherwise I'll just critique you via SRK.
I just started Viper today as a dual to Chun-Li, and I need help bad! I got the basic moveset down, and I can, say, use a FP Thunder Knuckle to stop a jump-in, but that's about where my skills end. I need any help, tips, or whatever that I can get.

In the US...Asian Hitler qualified through round 3 of a GameStop tourney with Viper and Kensou has won a few Planet Zero tourneys with Viper. In Japan where there's a prime atmosphere for training up a character like Viper you can believe it. If Tougeki had Viper up as top tier in one point in time it means she was doing really good at one point.
If you check out Nohoho's tourney stats website...
http://curryallergy.blogspot.com/ (The dates highlighted in orange means you can watch video footage of the event).
In the month of April, Tonpi (Viper) and Chun player team won an SBO qualifier. Uryo (supposed #1 Viper in Japan as of late) won a singles style ranking battle (tournament) as well. Uryo also won an SBO qualifier teamed up with Umezono (Dictator player). FZ also qualified with another player as well. Plenty more than I haven't listed. Many strong tourney winning Vipers in Japan is the jist.
