This game has negative edge like SF3.... so just do HP (hold the button down), then fireball motion, and release HP.

Yep. You want to release FP right after doing the motion. I'm finding (As I've, after 4 years of different SF games on and off, only finally getting serious.) that when canceling moves, you want the d-pad motion for the next move to occur between the start of the move, and the frame where it hits.
So FP (hold), 236 (released FP). It may be that I'm using a PS3 controller, but it's hell trying to teach myself to hold the button down, so I just press it really fast instead.

Just keep on trying, you're bound to make it eventually by chance. Try to release the negative edge earlier or later than you usually do...

make sure you arent doing an ex version, that doesnt count either
also, in this game, if you are doing something and its not working in challenge mode, the answer is usually go faster.
i try to time my negative edges so that when the first attack hits, i press the button for the second attack
edit: but if you are good maybe try and go slower. my friend who is good had a problem of going too fast.

Definitely make sure your hard punch press is consistent with being after the fireball motion, mashing does not make the move come out, timing is lenient but still has to be fairly precise.

Not to point out the obvious, but having a stick makes move and combo execution much, much easier; particularly if you either build/mod your own with the Sanwa (or Seimitsu if you prefer) parts.
So if you don't have stick, I highly suggest getting one, as these things (negative edge, buffering, etc..) become much cleaner once you can use 3-4 finger as opposed to a single thumb (maybe a trigger finger)

normally, or in most cases for that matter, an arcade is usually the issue because the wireless controllers of ps3/xbox have slight delays in them; however, i did all of gouki's and gouken's normal and hard with a ps3 controller, heres some tricks u can use
some tips:
-try putting it in a combo sequence, like you are actually fighting. ex: try jumping in with a hard punch, then HP then hadouken, getting used to that motion will also help in fights (if u dont already use it)
-changing the button config for a specific trial isnt against the law or frowned upon; for many of them i did this because the triggers are tricky to press in timing. i like setting square for HP for akuma (unless u need LP for that specific challenge)
-a fight pad can also do the trick, they have faster response times and definitely feel better than an xbox controller (not better than a ps to me tho)
-for ps3 owners: connecting a ps2 controller definitely helps (from what ive heard) and the adaptor for it is like 4 dollars on ebay
-if all else fails, its only a trophy right? (or an icon/title for the hard trials) dont bleed your thumbs dry trying to do a task you might never use in battle; you can always watch the youtube vids if you just want to know the combo for the sake of getting better
