View Full Version : Joysticks to use for Gen?

Hi all..
New to the forums, but have read for some time. I am currently playing Gen a lot. He's a lot more entertaining to play since you can mix up your play near indefinitely.
The only problem I'm running into is the DS3 I've been using the entire time. My ability is kind of maxing out with what I can do. No matter how hard I try, I can't get MK>Hands to work even semi-consistantly, and some other combos would be much easier without using a regular controller.
I was looking for recommendations for joysticks that are very durable for playing Gen (and, hopefully I can recycle it for future fighters). I saw the madcatz tournament stick and that looked nice, but I'm not if other recommendations could be made. I realize there is a place specifically for joysticks but since Gen play takes a lot of toll on the equipment in question I was wondering if any folks actually using him could give input directly..
Thanks a lot.. :)

Tournament Edition stick is great, it is as authentic as the arcade!
Standard Edition after you put all Sanwa parts in is just as great.

Hmmm, I have a problem. I got the Tekken 5 stick for the ps2. I kind of want to save money and get a converter to use it for the PS3. Is it worth it?

Fucking stupid thread, come on.
How is it stupid? he asks a legitimate question. I would ask the same thing. I use the PS3 pad and do fairly well with gen. As he mentioned I can't do the Mk to hands.
Further more its a question of investment. Do you have the money to invest in an arcade style controller or not? I know I don't. I had the Saturn USB controller but the d-pad broke. I had mulled over getting the fightpad and mayn places wre sold out or wouldn't get a shipment in till april/may. So I heard about the Saturn USB. It was well received by many but as I've said the d-pad broke. Personally I thought I did better with the regular PS3 pad.
Still thinking of getting the fightpad though because of the turbo option. That way I can link from MK into hands a bit better.

It's a stupid thread because it's not limited to just Gen. The thread could have effectively been "Joysticks to use for SFIV?" which have multiple threads of their own in the tech section.

You should use the joystick you are most comfortable with.
I use the powerglove.

^ Don't jump to conclusion yet Tenor because I bought the FightPad yestrday for my own trial and error purposes.
Since SF4 at the arcades doesn't have Gen I play SF4 at concoles. From my home Xbox360 and works PS3 I've grown in getting used to default pads. Yesterday I bought the Blanka faceplate MadCats fight pad to give it a whirl. I used Type A for button config. All attacks in the front and PPP/KKK for shoulders. The FightPad is very pretty but for the moment thats all it is. The turbo feature is neat but this fight pad will not let you MK>Hands as well as people might think, In fact I am doing it right now in training on Guile for more tests. Now I did manage to get MK>Hands if I set all punches on Turbo but thats with the turbo setting so it's basicaly rendering me as being unworthy and I will not play like that, but for testing purposes it's alright I guess.
Since on this pad I have a freedom for all my attacks to be in front of my fingers more Gen combos are possible like Cranes SLP to Crance CLK into Zan'ei into Zetsuei but by adding that extra hit the damage dampner yeilds in a less damaging combo then w/o the Cranes SLP. In essence I get more combos but I lose damage when I'd link everything. A bit irrelivant to the cause but thats the freedom of having all the attacks infront because I use shoulders for Lights on default pads.
The D-Pad is very smooth and provides easier Negative Edge and canceling but sometimes it comes out to fast even if you didn't intend to do it or have fast fingers. Charging for Jasen and Oga can be a bit tricky as well because you'll jump in some instances because the D-Pad is really light.
Shoulder buttons are kinda hard to press sometimes but other buttons are really easy to press. The pad does not help with trials aswell as I've spent a day doing everybodies trials yesterday for fun.
Now I give everything the benefit of the doubt and I will keep this pad for testing and id like to get comfortable using it but since I am so used to default pads this fightpad serves no purpose for me for the time being because I played matches with it yesterday and I had to switch back to the default pad, only because I didn't get used to the pad just yet. The moral of my "wall o text" is that if you're used to something with Gen then you'll have to relearn it if you change pads, valid for any character imo. Thats all from me at the moment.
Still with the benefit of the doubt but the fightpad is just pretty, but does not improve anything. Back to default pad for the time being. If id purchase a stick and I can and not care because money is not an issue but it won't mean godly Gen use. Stuff like that you need to get into :)

Welcome to SRK :rofl::rofl::rofl:
Definitely go for a stick. Your skill level and execution will eventually hit a wall on dpad. If its your first stick then don't settle for anything less than...
- Hori Real Arcade Pro ($100)
- Madcatz SE ($70)
- Madcatz TE ($150)
The madcatz SE and TE should be available at most retailers in a couple weeks. Don't pay inflated prices. Since its your first stick i would recc the Madcatz SE or Hori...we generally refer to the Hori as 'HRAP'. Go to the Tech Talk section of these forums and read about sticks there.

Yeah keep your T5 stick and use it. No reason to buy another.

Er..I didn't really mean it in the context of the entire game. After watching some of the videos posted here it seemed like I should go for something durable. I'm not trying to destroy the forum or anything. If the thread should be moved/closed, please mods do so...

Thanks everyone for the advice so far though. I'm going for the TE fightstick I think. The screw holes on the back of the DS3 have pockets of flesh ripped from my fingers and it is becoming pretty painful.

How is it stupid? Let's see. If he was asking specifically for a stick to use for Gen that would help him perform mk xx hands rather than make a new thread cluttering the Gen forum EVEN MORE, he could have posted it in, and this may be a surprise to you THE FUCKING MK XX HANDS THREAD. Crazy right?
I'm sick of checking this forum and half the threads are like "How do I beat Gen's Challenge" or "How do I do waterfall kick" or "Gen's alternate costume," sorry if that makes me an asshole.

Where can I find a converter for my Tekken 5 Stick? SERIOUSLY! I CAN'T FIND ONE THAT DOESN'T HAVE A BAD REVIEW!

Relax man...
You don't have to post in a thread you don't care about.
I am new here as well and find the views of fellow Gen players about using stick vs pad interesting.
If it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing. Go post constructively in a thread you care about.
Just purchased a TE stick as well. I'm having a really hard time getting used to it, but I do see how a stick will help make you a better player should you get used to it.

Been playing a bit more with the MadCats fight pad and I came to a personal conclusion that it's just not for my Gen use. Something just doesn't feel right with the buttons and the style switching when playing on default button settings. Turbo doesn't do much neather aswell. This is just my personal taste but thats my conclusion. I am keeping the fight pad because it looks pretty and I may let my friends borrow it/have it :)

Clearly. I've been on this forum for 7 years, and don't need tips on posting, thanks though.

Edit: You know, I had something posted here in response that was somewhat snarky.
Whatever gets your rocks off. Awesome post.
Congrats on your 7 years. I have enjoyed reading your posts in the other threads and it's clear you're a decent player. (no sarcasm... being serious)
I don't want to participate in some type of flame war, but I just felt you were being rude. Whatever the case, I'm done responding to you here as nothing positive is going to come from it.

So far, using a stick has really helped my gameplay.
I am nowhere near the skill level of most of the posters here, but with a stick you really don't need to have turbo or any crutch like that. About 40% of the time I've got the standing mk to hands combo down (I know, not great, but progress. I couldn't do it at all with the pad).
Thanks for the response.

I agree. The stick, in general, is the correct way for any fighting game so I cannot knock on that. What I did with the FightPad was more along the lines of trial and error and I wanted to see what the fuss over the turbo was all about for self conclusion, that ended up being a post here since this type of topic was made would fit it perfectely :). Ofcourse it could vary from user to user and some may prefer Gen using a FightPad which is more then cool. I've also discussed Stick .vs FightPad which guys who do use Sticks and Stick wins by afar in pretty much every general aspect, not just Gen use. For me, right now I am very comfortable with the default pad, ofcourse a few minor limitations but nothing match threatening as far as my style Gen goes. $150 for a stick is pretty much nothing to me since I get paid so I think an investment like this could be a plus for the overall game. Sure, it may take some time to get used to but it's always like that and learning is key, I mean everybody kind of had to relearn Gen with SF4 because he is not like his SFA2/3 counterparts :)
On a side note and I am personaly a pretty chill dude. I think the whole "w/e join in w/e year" is an invalid statement for the most part. I lurk alot of forums so a registration date...it's just a silly number. I like this sub-forum because of the type of people that did choose to play as Gen over other characters that don't require much. I'd like to keep civil discussions because the Internetz is a serious business...but it really doesn't have to be.
Can someone give me a suggestion for a converter for my tekken 5 stick to ps3?
There are a number of good PS2 -> PS3/USB converters, though they can be hard to find. These would be a good place to start:

I think it's a decent enough question considering to play well with Gen you have to keep switching stances. And different sticks have different button layouts.
General consensus and constructive opinions from other Gen players might help him ascertain which layout to try first.
ie:

http://www.sublevelmedia.co.uk/sticks/images/layouts/number2.png
http://www.sublevelmedia.co.uk/sticks/images/layouts/number3.png
http://www.sublevelmedia.co.uk/sticks/images/layouts/number4.png
Which layout do you guys prefer to play with as Gen, with regards to quick stance switching for combos? :mp:

Why do people bother going into threads they have no business being in? How hard is it to assess a thread by it's title and not enter if it's not desired? It's not hard to tolerate things like this at all, I can only wonder how you react to such minutely off-key things in real life. Sad. :arazz:
On topic, it can be a fair question that can belong in the Gen section (which really isn't especially cluttered compared to every forum ever made in the history of the internet). But you should be a little more specific I think. I'd go with an octagon gate. You will definitely want convex buttons, not concave for Gen! I'd go with the Japanese button layout (ergonomic) rather than flat American. I think the madcatz TE stick and and hori have this setup?
It's understandable that when your thinking about dumping a decent bit of cash into something like a stick you'll want to make sure you get the right one, so imo just ignore the e-peens in here whining for attention. :crybaby:
$0.02
EDIT: Good links mumra, I'd go with the 1st or 2nd layouts.
