View Full Version : Stanford Team Re-Engineering Brain Cells to be Controlled by Lasers

Scientists are working on genetically engineered laser-controlled brain cells. You could take the adjectives from five scifi books, roll them into a ball and shoot them through a hyperbole gun and STILL not come up with something so incredible sounding. The work could utterly revolutionize neurotherapy, psychology, and the goopy goo of "you" inside that bone basket you carry around on top of your neck.

Stanford scientist Dr Deisseroth and colleagues work on the awesome idea of "optogenetics", re-engineering cells to be controlled by light. This means they can access deep brain tissues with needles and fiber-optics, instead of the traditional knives and implants that make brain surgery such a serious proposition.

Making the science sound even more fictiony, the genes which have been virally injected into existing cells are derived from light-sensitive algae and some salt-dwelling extremophiles (lifeforms capable of surviving in environments fatal to almost everything else.) If movie logic is to be believed, this would turn the patient into a infectiously shambling photosynthetic plant-zombie who raids kitchens. Luckily it isn't, and instead you end up with a brain structure that can be turned on or off by pulses of yellow or blue light (giving a whole new meaning to "feeling blue.")

The work is progressing well in trials on mice, and turns up in Nature every time they decide to report something - so at least somebody knows that "Method of mood control via laser, including moods other than 'vaporized'", is a big deal.

Fixed. (http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2009/06/scientists-reengineering-human-brain-cells-using-genes-from-extremophiles.html)

What an interesting development, it makes me want to study how the brain works.

Fuck me that's awesome.

One step closer to figuring out just what the hell makes someone who they are.

That sounds like the apocalypse, if the water is "used up" and not exhausted as steam or something. But then again... Can you "destroy" water, as in turn it into something that can never become water again?

Your telling me they are working on a thing that will turn my brain off when a blue light flashes and on when a yellow one does?

Buying all the Blue LED's in the world to start flashing at people now.

This sounds like some seriously dangerous stuff.

Also, I seriously loled at "hyperbole gun", simply because I could see the Halo team being like, "That's a cool name! Let's use that in the new installment!"
And then every time a Halo fanboy said that the franchise was the best game series ever made, the announcer would materialize into the real world and yell, "HEADSHOT!"

So...I can shoot lasers from my eyes?

That would be tops.

Sounds like the cyberbrains from Ghost in the Shell. I keep telling people it was a documentary filmed in the near future, sent back, and then rotoscoped to be disguised as anime. This should help them to believe me. And yeah, there's a car that runs on water, man.

Slightly off topic, but still in the brain category. I watched a special on pbs a couple of months ago about the anatomy of the brain. It was pretty cool in the way it explained how it worked, was wired, etc. The point of it was basically that the brain is fast and efficient enough to process reality as it is happening. If it were any slower or faster we'd be screwed pretty much. They covered a lot more than this, but I don't think I could do that good of a job summarizing it here.

I could just picture some guy staring at his computer HDD light with the blue LED...he just keeps going to sleep every 1/2 second while downloading stuff.

or better yet.

"Hey girl come here real quick I wanna show ya something"
*pulls out flashlight with blue light bulb*
"GOTCHA BITCH!"

I dont' see the point in it all though 0_o...unless your tryign to rule the world y slipping the compound into the drinking supply and just 'turning everyone off' while you robb a bank or something...
