I started playing online again and recently got into G1 and I'm running into a very frustrating problem.

Round 1, I'll usually beast the opponent, like no chance in hell just own them.

Then it comes to round two, I'll get them down to low health but for some reason I just can't land the dagger, I'll do stupid shit like try to poke on wakeup and eat ultra, go for chip w/ HP headbutt and get punished, even such scrubiness as trying to landing an ultra.

I was sure it's just a mental change of attitude either on the opponents half when they have low life that makes them play better or on my side when I have a big adv. that makes me play worse.

But this has been happening more and more recently and it's making me realize that I don't have any tools to put the bottom line on a match. Sometimes I will land a random c.lp for the win but it feels like an empty victory.

Should I just work on staying calm throughout the match or do u guys have tips?

Never end with chip unless it's guaranteed. I've lost 2-3 times in tournament because I ended a match with a chip attempt. Headbutt, especially lp headbutt, is slow as shit and can be reacted to by any decent player.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to kill with normals or throws whenever possible and to not give up life leads unless you're playing a projectile based character. When you start jumping in or fishing for headbutts to finish games, you have a tendency to change your game style and get fucked up. Ending with a jab is the best way to end imo.

I notice that if I attempt to run away and block more, I get kills easier because people get desperate. If you block 10 fireballs in a row, I guarantee that ryu or sagat whose near death will crack and do something stupid like jump or full screen tatsu/tiger knee.

Well, if you have EX meter, just zone well and wait ... neutral jump FP a little here and there when they jump... and if they just wait for you and sit in the corner, start whiffing oichios to gain meter, do that until they advance, which they should somewhat unless they just like you getting a full stock, then go back to zoning and seeing what they'll do to you... really, just wait if you got the lead, unless your instincts just tell you to go in there and pop'a'fool...

The thing is sometimes I try to "turtle" and put the pressure on them, just neutral jump over fireballs, FA absorb stuff, don't attack them at all. But it never works, it's like they get better and I get worse when the pressure is on. Any go-to safe moves to use in low-life situations? I guess EX-Headbutt but they are usually expecting it and start jumping back. I think I just have to keep my cool a little more and I'll be OK.

x1000 what Pieguy said. I have sat and done nothing but dodge and block fireballs for 40 seconds...usually the other player cracks after ten though.

When you have the life advantage, stay at full or mid-screen and stop doing anything other than blocking or evading fireballs. Honda has a horribly unsafe offense so you can't afford to do risky shit like half screen splashes (good players punish these so badly...) and half screen headbutts (good players jump these effortlessly).

Be ready for the jump-in and just standing fierce chop it or backdash out of the way. You don't want people close to you since you have a slow as fuck short and jab and you don't ever wanna get crossed up (jump back roundhouse on non-meaty cross-up attempts, this seriously fucks up rufus).

Solid advice, I'll keep this in mind when playing. Buttslam is another blunder I make a lot. I think I can pull off another one while he thinks what to do but vs. better opponents all it leads to is dp->FADC->ultra.

i havn't been playing honda for all that long but in my experience i have only had success 2 ways for closing out fights:

1) as has been said by pieguy and a few others, just sit on that lead. at full screen if they will let you, make them watch the clock tick away and maybe your meters go up and he will rethink the fullscreen game.

2) if i must do something in close i go for cr. lp xx h. hhs, far as i know it's the only safe chip that honda has.

Dude.. As boring as it gets just run the clock to zero.

For the one of a few times where I actually play a match right.

And I'm still a fan of walk up jab into hands then walk up block to get a reaction.

Haha I feel you, I was playing some casuals with some people at the University around me and I lost a few because I changed my style up to try and chip their remaining health to win... instead I lost a few... Great tips here though.

If you are determined to turtle out the rest of the round try and save ultra for the last few seconds, unless i'm very much mistaken the clock keeps ticking as the animation fires up.

it'd be pretty hardcore to catch a player in those last seconds with the ultra and KO him at 00.... I'd bow down.
