*Official Borderlands Thread* - Mad Max + 5 Billion Weapons

Its basically another RPGFPS, but this one has a bunch of vehicles, Co-Op and tons of weapons.
So imagine Fallout 3 + the above things.
You can pick from 4 of the main characters, all which have their own story.
From wiki, here are the 4...

Mordecai came to Pandora in search of a man from his past named Demosthenes. Upon learning that Demosthenes has died, Mordecai sets off to learn how he died and what he was carrying. Mordecai's play style is that of a lone ranger, preferring to snipe enemies from afar. Some of his special abilities can augment the party's damage from headshots or give accuracy boosts. Later in the game, he will befriend a bird-like creature named Bloodwing that will assist in combat.[citation needed] His skill trees are Sniper, Rogue, and Gunslinger.

Roland is a former soldier of the Crimson Lance, a sort of highly trained private military that disregards law and order. A decade-old vendetta is rekindled when Roland learns that the leader of the Brigadiers has a suspiciously similar name to a man he has sworn to kill. Some of Roland's abilities are meant to supplement and support the party. His Leadership skill can boost the party's experience gains, while his Medical skill will increase health regeneration, and Support will increase weapon damage or regenerate ammunition for the party. Roland is a soldier class and the only class that doesn't have to worry about ammo as a special backpack produces an infinite supply.[5] His skill trees are Medical, Support, and Soldier.

Once a human, Lilith at one point was turned into a siren. One of only six Sirens, they are a group of people with unbelievable powers, but no way to control them. She comes to Pandora in search of another Siren, in an effort to find out more about herself. Lilith is essentially the mage of the group, using her Siren powers to support the group and attack the enemy. Some of her powers include the ability to increase the group's rate of fire, as well as the power to create temporal bubbles, which she can manipulate to slow down enemies and hostile projectiles or speed up allies. Her most iconic ability however is called "Phase Walk", where Lilith becomes invisible and can sneak around enemies, upon revealing herself, she detonates a shockwave that can do area effect damage to all enemies.[5] Her skill trees are Controller, Elemental, and Assassin.

Brick. A massive specimen of a man who likes to use his fists to smash the enemy above all else. He wears a necklace adorned with the paw of his beloved deceased dog. He fills in the tank niche and can take quite a beating as well having the ability to chug berserker-state inducing pills for short bursts of power. Not much is known about his story or why he is in Pandora.[citation needed] Brick's skill trees are Brawler, Tank, and Blaster.

Its coming out in late October and will I got high high hopes for it.

Just heard of it today and I'm already considering getting it, which is extremely rare for me. The last two games I've purchased in the past 8 years are Fallout 3 and SF4.

Whoever is in charge for marketing this really dropped the ball... it looks like there's a lot of fun to be had via co-op.

Well...I said I was hoping it had more fluid gunplay so...you know.

From what I've seen the gunplay is more fp-esque. Fallout 3's was really broken up by VATS and such.
My biggest concern with the game is that all the weapons will only be slight variations of each other, and the world could be incredibly dull and repetitive. But again this is just speculation.

The only character who seems simple is Brick. Everybody else looks fun. Lilith is definitely random and that's what will be fun about playing her character.

Messing with the visible properties of light mixed with surgical shotgun blasts will be good, clean fun.

Off line co-op is split screen two player. it looks alright, the screen is split vertically i think, not horizontally.

I watched some streams of this game from begin to end and it's incredibly bland. Ending is fucking stupid, there's only like 10 unique enemies, and the environment only changes at the end with some snowy bits. Just some fair warning for those interested.

theres basically a +new game after you beat it where you keep your items and levels and you can play the game over again. The enemies get tougher as well.

This morning, I woke up with some intense cold + sinus headache combo. I decided that I had to go to class as I had a midterm review that day and would pick up Borderlands afterwards. It was the perfect plan and I was in no condition to pull it off but it was too good a deal to pass up, that Borderlands was.

- I walked into Future Shop and they told me that they were out of Borderlands (I literally was there at 10:30 am, right after my class ended). I decided to head to Wal-Mart looking for a calculator for psych. Found out calcs were in Electronics, not school supplies...

- I did not know I would regret ever going into the Electronics section until I did...

- As I walk in, the 360 section was packed with people, staring and browsing through the 360 cabinet. "I wonder if they're here for..." I stopped myself. "Calc comes first." The phone in the area was ringing off the hook with the clerk answering with "No, we sold out, we don't know when the next shipment comes in" repeatedly. She was also repeating it to EVERY single person in the 360 section, as they were apparently asking the same question.

- The minute I took one step further into electronics, one of the clerks comes up to me, and angrily says:

"NO! We don't have Borderlands! It's SOLD OUT, and we are not sure when we are getting any more copies! TRY a different location."

- I thought to my self but that isn't a good idea with a sinus headache, so I decided to respond with " That's fine and all, but were do you keep your calculators?"

- Her face kinda turned red before she showed me, and was apologizing to me for quite a while, explaining why she responded that day.

- Apparently, every electronics store that sells games were being harassed all morning for not only Borderlands but to match it at $40 cause of Future Shop. Interestingly though, EB refused to do it. :wtf:

I searched the Gearbox forums and they stated:

"Update on the North American PS3 Friends Interface issue:

We've identified the problem and are working on a fix.
Believe it or not, the friends feature was heavily tested by Gearbox and 2K. However, this particular issue we found could have never manifested itself in our or 2K's test environments.

We’ll find out very soon if the issue exists for the PS3 International versions of the Borderlands. If it does, we’ll hopefully have a fix implemented before it affects those customers.

Can x-box, ps3, pc people ever play together? According to this, the PC version stores guns into your hard drive, much like DIablo games did... We're gonna have idiots duping uber powered guns for sure.

What I find funny is from the reviews I read they use the WoW color loot system, white-green-blue-purple-orange.

Anyway, looks like fun. As much as I loved Fallout 3, as a FPS, it failed. Looking forward to seeing how this plays.

Nope, does not work on skills not unlocked.

They do stack however. I really wish they would show the numbers but it's easy to confirm with any health boosting skill.

I've only played single player, and I haven't even beaten it yet, but these are my first impressions


Good
-Gun play is fun
-Nice graphics, good style fairly diverse enviroments (compared to say...fallout 3)
-Story doesn't get in the way of the shooting, pretty decent voice acting
-Addictive pursuit of slightly better guns
-Generous loot drops
-Some nice character specialization
-Side quests make leveling up fun

Bad:
-Some dumb enemy AI, lost of running straight at you, most of the challenge come from overwhelming numbers
-Fairly repetitive enemies, not a huge amount of strategy is needed
-lots of junk loot
-Occasional bullshit death from enemies spawning behind you in the middle of a fight. Some of the smaller, faster enemies can mess up your "damage detection" (red bars on the side of the screen to show you what direction you're being attacked from)

Meh:
-Pretty formulaic gameplay, fight your way to point A, shoot everything and/or fetch something, return to where you got your quest. Occasionally they mix it up a bit, but expect to be shooting things.
-Death doesn't carry a very heavy price...you just respawn at the nearest save point minus about 10 percent of your cash
-Vehicles are more of an afterthought
-Not really a bazillion guns, maybe a few hundred with very few slight variations.
-Could use some more customization options
-Sometimes looting can be underwhelming, considering there are lootable objects everywhere, it sometimes is frustrating when you go through a bunch just to come out with a couple of bullets
-After waiting and waiting, looting and looting and then saving up fto buy a new gun, the game always seems to throw me one that is as, or almost as good as the one I just got, just to taunt me.

Overall its a fun game, its not perfect, but if you can pick it up for 40 bucks and you like shooters/diablo style RPGs, you can't really go wrong.
From what I've heard and read about multiplayer the lack of trading and loot sharing really hurts the experience, so play with people you know, I guess.

I have a level 30 Brick with an Scoped SMG with x4 Ignite, and he mows through those dudes like a laser knife through butter.

And its this kind of shit that will keep me from playing co-op with anyone other than friends - especially after last night, and my very first BL co-op experience.

I was blowing through the game with my Brick, and a Mord popped in, and we played together for like fifteen minutes before getting to the Salt Plains boss - the dude with Hanz and Franz as his mini-bosses, who totes bad-ass shotgun.

Anyways, I'm slaughtering shit, then we get to the boss, and, as I am Brick i.e. the tank, I unload SMGx4Ignite on him until I close the distance, then I pop into berserk mode and start flailing on him and maul him pretty much solo, as the Mord didn't do much at all. I kill the boss, but he takes me out on the last hit. Then the Mord kills the remaining fodder, leaving me with no means to give myself a second wind. Then he goes and loots everything around him before he revives me - dashing off immediately after to get to the boss chests up top.

I disconnected the game right then and there - cutting him off before he could cheap exploit the good chest.

for the hunters, if you want an incredibly easy solo experience, birds of prey = auto win. your exp gain sucks, but i can run into pretty much anywhere without badass units and just loot the place up and move on as soon as my glowing chicken starts flying around. pretty sure i'm gonna go pistol/birds.

I originally wanted to focus on Snipers, but I read the Bird/Gunslinger thread on the Borderlands Forums and it just seems so overpowered I gotta try it. Im only at level 16 or 17, so i got a ways to go, but so far that bird is pretty beastly.

This way whenever I kill something I get Shield/Health regen and increase my already stupid fast fire rate. I can Take down SuperBads (the upped version of Bad Mutha's once you reach level 50) with two clips. I don't even need my turret but with a level 5 Refire and my fast fire rate it still regens pretty decently.

Plus it's nice that Stat also heals allies whenever I kill something so people don't bitch at me for not being a healer.

Yeah it was the same for me when i first played... I suggest playing the game solo for a bit just to get used to it or play with friends with the same level as you. I started at lvl 1 and my friends were level 10-15.. with their help i leveled up fast though :wgrin:

Mind Games is ridiculously good. Easily better than Phoenix or Phase Strike. Daze is an amazing debuff against enemies. Bosses become pushovers when they're walking at like 10% speed, and shooting at 10% speed. Enemies in general just become much easier to kill. Combined that with Dramatic Entrance (and the below tactic) and everything you face should always be dazed.

Having 5/5 in Hard to Get, and 5/5 in Blackout, means that every 3 enemies you kill after using Phasewalk, your Phasewalk is up again. When facing groups of enemies, this is very often. It's almost not fair really since they'll all be dazed (thanks to Dramatic Entrance), and taking damage from your class artifact mod. You can basically spam the move since it'll refresh constantly, keep everything dazed, and wreck house.

Honestly, the entire middle tree is fairly weak. Quicksilver isn't completely terrible, but the gain is mild. The rest of the talents are passable.

I haven't tried it with 2 players but if that doesn't work you can always just get a buddy to make a room so you can swap items.

Also generally speaking you're going to want to max out most skills you put points into. Many skills don't really become useful until you max them out and add to them with + skill mods.

I've found some crazy rocket launchers. Shit like 900 damage x3 with 4x Incendiary. They all seem so awesome but then you try them and they don't shit.

All Bosses respawn. They always drop the same item though. Which unfortunately are never really that good, but I've only ever had purple boss items drop, maybe a legendary version would actually be good.

Most of the time your awesome guns are going to come from chest. Which unfortunately means that the most effect way to farm is to just make a game in new haven, open the 3 chest in that town, exit, make a new game and repeat.

Getting use to FPS is a lot easier this time around since I know where all the beginning enemies are. I know that won't be the case later. But it helps the transition a lot since the last FPS I played and got decent at was Turok 2. :lol:

Beat it today. Very dissapointing ending/last boss, I mean, I wasn't expecting much, but that was just stupid. In retrospect, most of the bosses were pretty bad.
Played playthrough 2 up to nine toes...can safely say its exactly the same thing but with slightly bigger numbers (and new names for enemies). I was really hoping they'd just start throwing awesome guns at me...no. Still waiting for that awesome world breaker. Even the final bosses loot was disappointing, 3 green/blue pistols? Oh gee, thanks. If only my pistol skill was higher than 2. I only came across 2 Eridian weapons...the canon that's dropped by that royal guard guy and the 101 lightning thing. They're ok, I guess. Battle rifles are still my main. And for some reason I regenerate ammo. That came to me as a bit of surprise when i noticed it.
Man, I'd kill for a decent healing shield. Like hundreds and hundreds of people.

Yeah the ending is pretty bad. I would be more upset if I wasn't expecting it/don't give a shit about the story.

As far as the loot, the really good shit doesn't start coming till like lvl 48-50. Then you start finding some crazy shit like snipers that shoot 7 shots at a time and revolvers that shoot all 4 elemental types (each bullet shots a different type). And yeah those alien weapons suck ass. They do a shit ton of damage but can only fire a few shots before having to recharge and they take forever to recharge.

Also once you hit 50 the enemies get upped and renamed again. My favorite is the "Insane Midget Shotgunner" being renamed to "Apeshit Stunted Shotgunner" :rofl:. What's really cool is all the elite monsters (Badass/Bad Mutha's) become level 51 and are renamed SuperBads. All the bosses become level 51 too.

What I really want to know is if legendary class mods/boss weapons are extremely rare, or just don't exist.

Game is like crack. I started playing at 10 last night and didnt stop till now (2am). Thats the longest I have sat and played a game in a while. I got my hunter to level 19 and got some dope ass shit. The coolest thing I got is called the 650 Hunter Mod. I think thats what its called. Pretty dope, it enhances all my bird stuff. I mean, some of the other stuff is a lot doper but I cant use it yet. All of it is level 22+ stuff.

I got to fight some boss but it wasnt that hard. That arena where I had to fight all the skags was a lot tougher. I tried to do that by myself the other day but I died on the second stage. So I just got a friend and did 2 and 3 with him. It was still pretty damn tough.

There's actually 6 Chests, but only 2 really worth opening (the red ones.) I've been doing Chest/Skagzilla runs. Farm the chests, sell the junk, kill Skagzilla for xp, save and restart. Each run is about 3minutes.

And question: is the eridian weapons on the same color scheme? I got a Green Eridian Sniper Rifle which does good damage, but I can only shoot 3 times before the battery has to recharge, which sucks. I had a Legendary Sniper which was a few levels lower, but had a clip size of like 15, and was lightningx3 and proc'd EVERY SINGLE SHOT. I was dumb and gave it to a friend, but im sure I can get better eventually (im only level 30, so the damage was low around 221.)

I think its not really worth farming until you hit New Haven on the second playthrough, and im still on the first. Apparently Second Playthrough newHaven farm = Legendary city.

Comments on Hunter (Mordecai):

He's the only one i've played. Snipers are totally useless. Early on, they do nice damage and occasionally convienent on missions when you can nail people from a distance.. However, for the most part not helpful. You are better off focusing on the bird skills, because Bloodwing kicks MAJOR ass once you have his skills maxed out. After that, going with Pistols seems correct. From what I have read, most end game revolvers are >>>> snipers, and with a scope are just as effective longrange. Also, the skill tree for Pistols is insane, with the +crit damgae, the double bullet, and the lowering of your bloodwing cooldown. Maxing those 2 trees is deff the way to go.

(If they revisit snipers and change them to have.. I dunno... like 1800 damage base at end game, maybe they'd be useful. But for now, they just arent, and that seem so to be the consensus on the Mordecai main forums.)

I have yet to see an Eridian weapon that's not green.

Weird thing about Eridian guns, if you partially drain the battery and switch to another weapon, they won't recharge until you switch back to them. If you completely drain the battery and then switch, they'll recharge while you're using the other weapon. :looney:

It's almost as though they want you to try using 4 Eridian guns and just switch weapons when they're drained out.

I've read elsewhere that other people had this problem too - apparently it's a glitch in the game that doesn't allow you to advance. Exit and restarting seems to fix it.

As far as Hunter goes, fuck Bloodwing, yeah, I said it. My Hunter is level 32 right now and he is absoutely destroying everything and I haven't put one point in Rouge. It's been all Gunslinger.

You can get your fire rate with pistols on fucking retarded levels. Right now I have a purple repeater pistol with 15 fire rate and I pull the trigger twice and everything drops.

I fear how much he is going to own once I reach 50 and get some of those overpowered revolvers.

There are actually a few journal quests
try looking under shit, IN stuff (like boxes or wheels on their side) and for items you can interact with. Might be on a wall or something too.

Some of the scavenger missions had me scratching my head because the items were hidden out of typical sight lines.

No, not really. Once you finish your second playthrough, there isn't much to do besides get achievements and get better weapons, and maybe dueling (I have no idea if dueling is big online, since you can't name your lobbies).

You still accumulate exp, and the exp bar continues to move once you're 50 (it reaches the end but you don't level up), which would lead one to believe there is DLC and a higher level-cap in the future.

The only incentives (I think) left to continue playing with this character are:
1. Look for better weapons/items
2. Level up weapon proficiencies

I just finished 2nd playthrough last night. Lvl 50 with maxed out money.

The only incentives (I think) left to continue playing with this character are:
1. Look for better weapons/items
2. Level up weapon proficiencies
3. Help other people online
4. Play around with different skill tree setups

Hell, I found a shotgun that was damn near as accurate as my combat rifle. Haven't needed to break out my sniper rifle for a while now.

I got a lvl 19 orange revolver on my hunter the other day. 200+ damage per shot, causes explosions, has awesome weapon zoom. With my gunslinger mod, it has +45% accuracy AND +47% fire rate, so I shoot super fast and super accurately, even sniping with this revolver is a breeze.

Yes it only shoots 2 shots at a time, but with the Fast Hands skill and the fact that the gun itself has +60% reload speed, it's the most godlike weapon ever. I respecc'd to Gunslinger right away and this game is EZ-Mode now. Even with 4 players in a game I'm 2-shotting all the bosses, it's insane...

What threw me was the red words "Unending firepower". I didn't really understand what this meant until like an hour after I was playing with it. Even though I was using it as my primary weapon I realized I was constantly at full ammo. Didn't really notice because I figured I was picking up a lot of revolver ammo. Turns out this gun keeps you at full revolver ammo at all times. This gun has the Infinite Ammo cheat on it, it is so friggin sweet!

Nice.

Power-wise that's not going to be uber powerful for very long (until you get around level 23-25 maybe), but that unlimited ammo is a pretty sweet perk to get that early. I haven't seen one with that yet.

I got my hunter to 26 last night. Finaly able to use my Pesitlence Defiler. Gun is too good when combined with that hunter mod that gives + to corrosive damage. Also got my bird elemental shit too. He can do either fire, blast or corrosive damage now. Blast seems to be the best as it will always hit for 2000+ damage. Melee is too powerfull. I have that stat buffed all the way and I switch to some gun that has like +200 percent crit. Its funny to hit a bad guy for 20k damage and watch him turn into a shower of red.



Man I wish I could make macros in this game. I would love to be able to switch my mods at any time without having to go through the menu. You know, so I could start a fight with my sniper mod then hit a button and bam I switch to a pistol and the mod switches to scavanger.

Its either up on top of something thats up high or underground.

There are times where the mission marker stays in a spot when really the objective is in the general area of the marker.

You may have to look around for it.

This one really gave me trouble the first time. A few feet in front of the Catch-A-Ride you'll find a burnt up vehicle near the edge of the cliff, it's on the front seat.

Also I am playing this game way to much. I'm already on the verge of maxing out my second character. My hunter is now lvl 47. I just killed Krom for like the 10th time.

Hunters still seem overpowered to me.

that revolver one is really tricky, up on a nearby hill is a busted up car. it's under the hood of the car.

Any of the quests to find pieces of a gun they only give you the general location, so you'll have to look about.

so finally got to play it. been playing it pretty much all day. at lvl 19 now in 1 day. hopefully i can get to 24 by the end of the day...

havnt found any uber loot yet... except for my shield that i bought, which keeps me alive almost all the time. and i got a class modifier that i cant equip yet gives me tons of skill +'s.

still lookin for a nice revolver.

:rofl: My friends and i had the same problem. The last piece is hidden in the car wreck on the rocks... it should be in the drivers seat. :tup: Anyone who wants to play just send me and invite atm im level 26 with roland the soldier, and lvl 8 with lilith and brick. Ive managed to get some good class mods for the other classes just need to dump them and go back into an existing game to pick my loot. I just want that revolver dsp had in his playthrough... it looks like THE best gun in the game.

I thought about focus but Pistols have decent accuracy in general so I didn't think it was needed.
If anything Fast Hands could be dropped for Focus depending on the player.

I hate sniper rifles so I went with Blood-Slinger specs instead.

Imo the only thing that it needs is the HP regen but I couldn't find any room for it and no blood wing cool down techs. If anything, you could drop Trespass for Carrion Call since you are sniping 9/10 of you shots should be headshots.

Fast hands is too godlike to give up in any mordecai build IMO

If you're not going Bloodwing it's not worth the 10 points. Especially if you're going Gunslinger, you're basically giving up either Trespass or Relentless for faster reload speed.

Which IMO isn't worth it because with maxed out Killer and high level pistol efficiency (which increases your reload speed), Fast Hands doesn't do much.

I had the problem of 'having to much shit' so i joined a friends game, dumped stuff that i dont need for my character and rejoined as another class to pick it up. I had to do this around 5 times :lol: The only down side is my characters (lilith, hunter and brick) arent up to the level where i can actually use the good weapons.

I also was power leveling like a bitch with my 2 33/34 lvl friends. They joined my lvl 17 game and pretty much killed everythng in site :rofl: leveled up to 19 in a veeery short time.

Infernoman: I would sell that, it does good damage but the recoil on those types of combat rifles means you'll be missing most of those shot. I usually use the hyperion models, the 3 round burst ones, good damage and accuracy

This is what I ran solo: http://www.borderlandsthegame.com/skilltree/roland/#01500550005500505550000 and get yourself a Heavy Gunner mod. The class mod and Overload together should give you more than double mag size, Metal Storm will push your fire rate to absurd levels, Quick Charge will help keep your shields up.

When you're pinned down, hit and run to get Scorpio up, toss up Scorpio to draw attention and basically just throw yourself at the enemy. As long as you make sure to die within shotgun range of an enemy (then just kill him for second wind... giving you quick charge and metal storm on top of the full shields fill up), you're pretty much unstoppable.

You could trade off Scorpio cooldown reduction for some points in Stat, but imo being able to draw attention away from yourself is better than +% health on kill.
