All my videos are of online matches on the PC. I'll try to upload only stuff where one player doesn't totally dominate the other, unless it's a ragequit for people to point and laugh at.

Let's discuss that video though. Even though Daigo never fought the match he played it better than any other ryu player I've ever fought. Which is unsurprising... I think the more Ryu fights Gen, the worse Ryu gets. That and not to mention who this Ryu player is.

Daigo is constantly option selecting in some way.

I wouldn't particularly like doing the roll in that situation because I feel it leaves me with no options if it's blocked... the spacing seems kinda funny too. I like using the roll for position, like off of jump ins where I'm not sure if they will block or get hit, I just double kick into crouch strong fierce roll. If they block it, I push them into the corner and get some chip. I think I've said before though, I'm gonna start looking into more uses for the roll.

The crossup can beat dragons so long as you time it right, which I wasn't doing at first.

I think that's because Gen's tools to go through fireballs are pretty uninteresting so in reality "the matchup" is just Ryu's standard keepaway. Fireballs, fireballs, dragon punch, knowndown, mixup...

I was so damn hesitant. My train of thought was

- I'm near the corner
- Get out of corner with crossup
- Tunnel Vision and do the scrub ultra from trial mode
- He blocked it, GTFO cause you're so committed to doing something stupid
- Oh shit it hit him. Uhhh.... :confused:

Early jumping forwards weren't present because I felt I had to establish Gen's jump in combos first. That and along with his focus. I regret not using more mid range pokes. Daigo has some serious balls though, to just dash up space with fireballs and dp on wake-up. But like I said before, I wasn't sure how he was gonna approach fighting the character, so it was difficult to gauge what to threaten him with at first.

SimpleKiss: Being "not free" isn't good enough, especially when I was in position to win. It's more of a defeat than anything accomplishing for me. Not to sound negative about myself but I like to be real. I was in winning position and I made bad decisions. I fucked up a lot of execution too. For me, the only thing good about that is that my mistakes are evidence of where I can improve on.

And to think, if I would have beat him, Daigo's chances of winning the tournament would have shot down... not to mention I would have made it out of pools and probably placed a lot higher -- perhaps with money in my pockets. I appreciate your support in trying to make the situation more positive, but look at it from my perspective. When it's all said and done I lost. Being close to victory and losing is just as much a loss as being free and losing.

You really have to out-play your opponent, and you were pulling it off for a while. It's actually weird when you know your opponent doesn't know the matchup, because both players have to make a lot of adjustments very fast.

Just to point out something hopefully a little more constructive: I don't think you anti-aired Daigo once. I'm sure he recognized it too, because he was actually jumping in quite a lot as the match went on. I find myself using crane c.HK as AA more and more against Ryu players these days, since it works well at their favorite jump in distance.

Also, you could have had at least 1 free crossup wall dive. There's no reason to hold back or feel guilty about using a trick like that. If he ate an ultra or two, it'd be his (country's) fault for not knowing the matchup.

Anyway, lots of recent videos from local casuals. No commentary this week, but it's a direct HD feed this time.

Thanks. Like.... I'm just now learning that anti-airing ryu is kinda goofy vs. his arch and jumping roundhouse. With spacing you can't use Gekiro, so it really seems like you're absolutely right to just use crane cr.rh or mantis cr fierce.

Luckily I money matched Chris Hu's Ryu after everything was said and done. He basically told me I was money matching him :lol:. That should be an excellent match to watch once it's put it.

Question for you and Jibbo. I haven't watched every vid but I noticed that you guys didn't really ever go for super all that much. For instance I would notice with a full meter Jibbo would punish with:

mk xx hands > mk xx hands > fadc > s mp > s mk xx hands > s mk xx hands > fadc > s mk xx waterfall

Seriously pretty combo that I will NEVER be able to pull off. Plus it spends the entire meter basically doesn't it? What I can pull off consistently is:

mk xx hands > s mk xx super > waterfall or ultra with meter

Obviously infinitely easier to pull off and with ultra the damage is more is it not? I am obviously not at the level you two are but much of my game revolves around landing a super. If you spend the same amount of meter with the fadc's, why not try for super combos?

Depends on the situation. I suspect sometimes it's more convenient to go for whatever is on the brain rather than most efficient. Often times you'll see people do whatever they were going for initially as a punishment. It's not easy to make that adjustment, especially when you're unfamiliar with the situation that just happened.

With that said, there are some possible advantages to doing the fadc combos/mixups or straight bnb rather than doing the super as punishment. If it's a fireball character and you punish with just straight bnb combo or knockdown, you reserve the threat of a super so he'll be less inclined to throw fireballs. If you punish with fadc mixup or combo, you still keep bars of ex-oga or another mixup etc etc. Those kinds of things I've learned from 3rd strike. How to reserve threatening options and reasons why.

Ever since watching Daigo play, I've just been thinking about options. That's all he would do. Approach you with options. Knock you down. Options. In the air. Options. I think that clearly defining those with Gen is the next step for high level play for me personally.

Probably tomorrow I'll do and time by time analysis of my Daigo match.

It was my first time playing against Gootecks, but ShadyK had played me quite a lot already (only online at that point, though).

Khio was a weird matchup, but an interesting one. It was actually my second time playing him, because he sent me to the losers bracket earlier in the tourney. Watching him beforehand, I seriously thought "wow, this Zangief almost never mixes up his jump ins, I should be able to anti-air him for free." Then I played him and learned he found a way to time the j.HP to make it really hard to beat with my c.HP. I always knew Zangief mixing j.MK/anything is hard to stop consistently, but I wonder if slight variations in j.HP timing can be enough to throw off my AA. I think I may have been timing the AA just slightly too early, but the weird results (both attacks whiffing!?) got in my head bad.

Zangief is a matchup that I didn't (and still don't) have nearly enough experience with. Since then though, I've learned to use the crane c.HK more when I'm close enough to hit short hops, and just as importantly, I learned that mantis c.MK is really good for low profiling under Zangief's s.MP. It's like the only matchup where c.MK has become a primary poke for me.

You've definitely gotten better than what I remember on FADC. I think your mental level is higher than that ryu player, but you were losing because a thoughtless Ryu is actually practical/effective in this game. That's not to say you weren't guilty of tunnel visioning yourself though.

The focuses are well spaced, but they seem too programmed into you when you do it. You really need to work on responding and interacting to what your opponent is doing. It may be so that you're under pressure and such, but if Spazzy Spaz McGee is spazzing, then you need to block.

If your standing beside your opponent hit them with a mantis s.mp. If they block you can immediately try to kara throw because i think it leaves you at just the right range to do a kara backthrow. You shouldnt be able to land any other throws from that distance so if you throw them after that setup then you know you did a karathrow.

I'm not sure I'm following you. I watched the vid and also heard them saying ryu's hitbox on one of his hitstun animations is "a little weird and sometimes gen's bnb doesn't connect" or something like that. I think I also heard someone say it after Jibbo played Daigo.

They said it in this vid after 1:27, when Jibbo landed mk xx hands -> mk then missed the hands. The link from hands to the next mk landed so the second set of hands were guaranteed. Jibbo just didn't piano fast enough. He also missed it after 0:58 because he ex focus cancelled the hands but didn't dash cancel the focus.

It is alot more difficult against Ryu, but as far as I know it's not because it's some random thing. It's just because of the walk forward and how it tightens the window you have to time all your links with mk. I used to think Honda's hitstun hitbox was random until I recorded me doing doing the mk xx hands (2x) fadc loop and realized on playback it will never drop the combo. The same applies for Ryu.

So is there really some random element I don't know about? Please explain because I'd love an excuse for dropping that link against Ryu and Honda. I have an easier time with hp xx hands mk xx hands FADC loops against Blanka than those two assholes.

Gens super is fucking awesome when it hits, but when they block it, you are wide open for a really painful punishment. I dunno man, you did really good, that first match hurt you though, you just got hit with too many focus attacks. I think you did fine you just got to not take so much damage man. 4. Not saying you haven't but those are the video's that were posted in our main Gen video thread that players will use for reference. So criticism should be expected. If you don't like it I'd recommend asking the person who put the video's up to take them down.

Uhm, you could do that with any characters moves vs any character if your timing is right. Im just saying it works really well for characters jumping in on you and keeping them off your ass.

I have never been air thrown or focused off a gekiro. If you are getting air thrown your timing is way the fuck off and Gen doesnt even go that high up enough to be air thrown especially if you are not hitting the other character, he falls down pretty quick. Gaying it out isn't always a bad thing in some match ups. I do it against Honda all day unless he gets the life lead somehow.

But being able to punish for maximum damage is something that should always be done. Unless there's something seriously risky about it. But that's a part of what makes and breaks the bad from the good. People who have 100% execution, then people who have 50% execution but go for it anyway, fighting someone who likes to mash out SRK's well he's gonna eat it. But I personally don't consider it flash until it's wasted damage. Like 2 focus cancels into MK to hands. Damage scaling is just stupid at that point. However, even though it's flash, that combo mind fucks people all the time. Sometimes I do it when I know it freaks the person out and makes them start to do stupid shit.

Various occasions I've done mk to hands to people for 26 ish hits. And they just get mind raped and hide in the corner for me to continue to maul them. If you don't have 100% execution it's smart in some situations to gay it out. Or if you're just fighting Sagat, it's almost always smarter to just do the safe thing. Even if their a scrub, all they need is one mistake for an srk into ultra for more than 50% of your life bar.

Just don't combo that Ultra after the second fadc or the scaling will pwn your damage.

You dont need to stop going for it, you just need to clean up your exectution a bit (walk forward + timing).

I don't really understand this viewpoint. I mean, I can be worse than someone whose video I'm critiquing and still know what they are doing wrong. It's like coaches in sports, they are clearly not as good as their players but they have a vast knowledge of the game that allows them to understand what's happening.

It's not as "random" as a lot of commentators always say. The only time you shouldn't follow up with another mk to hands is really if you just didn't land it up in their face which is the same with a lot of people. It's just like Yeb's chart in the new matchup thread. Anyone with a "hard" mk to hands, you have to actually take a step forward for the next one to hit, so if you don't land it right in their face you won't be able to connect another. Or if you use an attack that pushes you back too far before the hands. Like if you start with s.hp > hands, you can't follow up with anything(Depending on the character but not Ryu and various others.).

So now that we've established your social skills are pretty lacking :wgrin:, I'd like to add that your Gen is actually pretty solid. I can tell you're thinking and interacting with your opponent in the matches you linked, which is obviously required moreso than most when playing the character that we play. I think overall you have a good understanding of the risks that you take and the reason why to do them, but don't always have your opponent's motive inside the decision making equation. This goes back to reading your opponent and that goes back to your opponent reading you, which in turn creates a more careful decision making situation.

Make your opponent think about the things he can't react to and only anticipate. Having an option is sometimes more threatening than actually executing that option.

Example: At 30 seconds in this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3llJs3LrDU

Against Guile you did ex-oga on wake-up. If you would have stood there, I gaurentee he would have back dashed anyways, because he ANTICIPATED the wall dive. In this situation you could have probably even forward dashed and applied pressure.

Oh and shit, you missed a mk > hands fadc combo though. This means Yeb is better than you too! Sorry bro. :sad:

JiBbo's button of the week! In an effort to balance my neutrality in SF4 with a bit of productiveness, and since I don't update my own thread anymore, I'll be writing about a normal every week.

:lovin: Low Forward :party:

Stats (according to srk wiki): 7 startup. 3 active frames. 17 recovery. 26 total frames. +1 on block. +3 on hit. Low profile. Low hitting.

As anti-air: It's an option here because of low profile. I haven't really used it in this manner, because I feel I'm covered with all the spots with other things but I can imagine where it could come in useful. To me it's one of those things where if I feel to hesitant I'd rather be defensive about the jump in then get hit by randy-savage elbow into tiger upper > ultra.

As mid range poke: Pretty good. It's slower than stand forward and has less range, so it's not the button you wanna whiff punish with, or whiff without it contacting the other person. However, this is gen's longest poke that has + frames on block and it hits low, so it's actually pretty good for setting up the next normal on block or hit from a distance. It is also interesting to note that on counter hit, it becomes +5 on hit, and you can counter hit confirm into standing mk > super/hands.

As a wake-up option: Timed meaty, it serves as a good low hitting normal plus on block and hit, and you can actually hit confirm standing jab > hands. If blocked you're +1 or better (up to +4 with 3 active hit frames) so you still have offensive options from there, like low jab or grab. If it hits, you still have the same options if you don't choose to hit confirm into stand jab. Maybe in range for close strong if blocked? Or walk-up?

It's a good button! Try it.

I dont agree. Watch Rahshaans videos against Abel, he DESTROYS him. He seems to pull shit off alot more consistently than both Yeb and Jibbo IMO

Rashaan is good, but it's easier to pull off moves against people that arent familiar with gen. This is because you dont feel as much pressure so the chances of you dropping links are alot lower than against others. But even so, i've seen more consistency in jibbo's gen than others. And why do you even mention how badly rashaan beat tom? It's irrevelant. That tournament was like... what? 4 months ago? People do get better you know.

When you say WTF kick do you mean Gekiro or Oga? I dont remember Oga being an anti air.

I use it differently during different matches ups.

Shotos and Sagat I stay away from it because I find I do it too late or something and it gets stuffed by HPs or HKs.

I use it a lot during my matches with Rufus and I guess other characters who have sort of a floaty jump (chun, bison)

Also, I'm pretty bad at DPing haha. My AA has been pretty weak until recently. But I still think it's pretty bad.

I've been trying to incorporate mantis cr.HP more into my game, but it seems pretty strict in terms of spacing.

I want to start looking into adding crane cr.HK into my game but it seems really strict in terms of timing.

So I still Gekiro as AA pretty often, but it just seems fairly lacking for an AA because of (I'm assuming) the gap from invincible frames and attack frames

You should follow Crane j.mk, cr.lk with mantis cr.hk or at the very least crane cr.mp when you don't have super. You should probably use gekiro less on wakeup, it's easily punishable. Go for ex Oga instead.

I see yeb tends to poke too much even when he lands a cross-up mk. Why didn't he just use hands for maximum damage? doesn't have to do mk-hands everytime. Seems he wasted a lot of chances to score more damage even when he lands a cross-up.

This was my first time playing a real set against Keno, and he's the first Balrog to ever give me that much trouble. Too many Balrogs waste meter on EX moves, but the big game changer that I had trouble adjusting to was the way he started to use his super so effectively. Keno has amazing reactions, and he's ridiculously consistent at hit confirming the jab straight into super. There were so many games that were competitive until I whiffed a sweep or c.HP or something, and then he takes off half my life. I think I kept throwing out those pokes because I was in disbelief. :rofl: I need to play him some more and learn to take a more cautious approach, I think.

Still, it was a practice session, so I was experimenting a bit. I kept trying to see if I could bait the super to hit me while I was airborne during a focus backdash, because I wanted to see if he would drop me during the juggle. It never worked out very well. We also had a couple matches before that off the stream and I gave him advice on Balrog's best answer for the crossup wall dive, since I wanted practice responding to it myself.

I don't consider it a bad matchup, I think I just took the wrong approach.

Your comments don't make sense though. I poked too much after crossups? Do you mean my jabs, when I was looking for tick throws? Because I just wanted to stay close once I got in, and sometimes I wasn't sure my jump in would hit. I can't even begin to understand your comment about MK hands. It IS the maximum damage combo, and it works fine after crossups when you go straight for the medium kick. MK hands to sweep is particularly good against Balrog, since he's easy to safe jump.

Jibbo: Yeah, hitting an airborne opponent with a FA is always a total surprise to me for some reason, I never manage to react properly.

And yes, I was throwing out a lot of random pokes. Primarily because I wanted to see just how much he could punish, and how consistently it could be done. Some of the times where it looked like I wasn't blocking at all though, I was probably trying to see if I could do an ultra on reaction to a jab straight. It's possible around the tip of its range, but too difficult to be worthwhile.

You can buffer the QCF's during the hands animation. That should give you enough time to get those inputs buffered.

Personally, when I'm on the right side, and doing MK~hands, I do MK~QCF, QCF+HP really quickly. I can't do it as correctly/quickly when I'm the left side, so I fuck that input up a lot. So I usually just don't go for it if I'm on the left.

You can actually do both qcf motions before the mk too. You just have to make sure on the second qcf motion that it's fully forward or gekiro comes out. At least that's how I do it. And it works well anyway.

Yea, like Akuma (air fireball) and Gen (Oga Wall cancel), when he lands from a DR he goes through that same weird landing animation.

It doesn't look like much of an animation, but it's there!

The reason I think this would be hard is because I assume the fireball would act as some sort of shield since they are both falling forward together. It's worth a try in training mode though :D. Neutral jump and jump back are go go go though. (though though).

During a DR you have a bunch of time to hit the ultra. At that time, I just did the QCFx2 real quick. I suppose you could buffer, but he falls so slow that you could just bang the motions out in the time that he's falling.

I'd have to say the sooner the better. When I watched the video, I saw that dictator was actually in a standing animation on the ground >.< Usually when I hit them, they are still in the upside down DR animation in the air a little above the ground.

Do yall read the forums or watch vids at all, lol how the hell do yall not know you that you can super/ultra akuma after a high air fireball, and dictators dr is punishable but it gets harder the further you are away, due to lack of invul frames

You can actually do both qcf motions before the mk too. You just have to make sure on the second qcf motion that it's fully forward or gekiro comes out. At least that's how I do it. And it works well anyway.

I even can do de super move after the mK, but only if im in the right side, if im in the left, i do QCF+mk, QCF+p

I suppose that fast players can do it without buffer in any side.

I stopped doing mantis super, but actually you can catch him pretty safely with hk crane super. If you do it somewhat late I've been smacked with a reverse but as long as I can clearly see thats what he's doing I almost always get him.

Technically if you can predict the ex headstomp I've found lk crane super actually will catch the ex headstomp. But, can't say I'd recommend trying it as if he does a reverse instead the lk super doesn't go anywhere so it'll be wasted.

gen can finish whatever place he wants. when the game came out gen was voted as one of the worst chars in the game. now look. with time and effort gen can do very well! ive been using gen locally and pulling off mk hands more reliably.
if you make it to fourth place with gen your a smart player with a good character.
he was my original main when it came out and he's slowly coming back to current main.
faith in gen is what i have, and its proven to be worth it. people in this thread are high level gen players and it's an honor to learn from you all. mk hands was the hidden potential.

Yeah, according to chunbelievable, Gen has been altered quite a bit. He now has his chain combo's, ex. given was he can do c.lp>c.mp>hp.hands. Supposedly hands only takes 3 to 4 inputs now. Gekiro's timing is different(Said to be made easier, though likely to be more difficult for people who actually learned how to do it). EX Oga is no longer a safe wakeup move. But Oga in general is a lot faster. Slightly slower than Adon's jaguar tooth.

- His P Stance jump has changed a bunch! He goes much higher than before and his j.MK jump cross up distance is a little further.

The main hting im concerned about here is Ex Oga not being safe on wakeup and getting his chains back (this is a good thing). The fewer punch for hands is not bad also. Hmm. Hope they dont mess our Gen up to bad.

If the inputs remain less on the final release I can't imagine it being very difficult for the adjustment. The input can very simply be lp, mp, hp, hp. That is a very easy piano or slide plus a tap. So imagine plink s.mk + lp, mp, hp, hp... I have been just practicing motor exorcises and it's seems doable even as a cross handed player.

Non cross handed could be plink s.mk + hp, mp, lp, hp. Dude that is cake! Because the chain timing seemed super strict "I don't think" you will chain mk into hp as long as you plink.

I seen Yeb last night play. He was okay.

Thats how i learnt alot of my Gen skills when i first started. All I did was watch every single high level Gen videos out there. (aka JiBbo and Yeb only real high level known back then.) Then AsianTom and Evil Rasaan came into the picture,etc. Watching vids was a real help. And bugging them on the forums here for help through messages. :p

I did read you were missing your MK~Hands. But I wouldn't worry about that. My hands execution is pretty ass compared to Jibbo and Yeb, no lie. They seem to be almost 100% with that, it'd be a lie to say I hit it at least 60% of the time because I really don't think I do (based on my last couple tournament videos). I haven't played you yet so I can't comment on zoning or footsies... which are real important (more than MK~Hands, imo)

Yeb figured out that instead of doing a taunt, our stance change would work too.

So essentially, you can just be walking through projectiles with no recovery from dashes if you got this little trick down.

It was annoying at first because I'd get thrown a lot, but I'd devote whole casual matches to just late teching throws, even if I lost I'd make sure not to get thrown. Also, it helps to know people's throw patterns. The main pattern after a jump in is usually (Jump attack (blocked), low short (block), throw attempt) Unless of course they're Ken, in which case they can throw out 3 ticks and Kara!

I still have a lot of trouble teching Chun Li's and Vega's throws because their walk speeds are a little too much haha. I still use the option select a lot, but I'm a lot more careful with it, especially during some match ups like against Bison.

I still have a lot of trouble teching Chun Li's and Vega's throws because their walk speeds are a little too much haha. I still use the option select a lot, but I'm a lot more careful with it, especially during some match ups like against Bison.


try to be more specific if possible. you used the word basically which makes it seem like theres a little more to your method. sorry if im pestering you with this, but throw teching and being sound defensively is way more important than combos and what not to me. thanks in advance
