MS Paint will not make animated gifs. Neither will MS Paints successor, MS Paint.NET. I think you will be able to make animated gifs with Paint.NET's successor, Acrylic. (http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/)

Gimp, Photoshop, and Gif Animator will all make animated gifs.

you might want to try getting a font manager. It saves a hell of alot of time. You might try something like typograf - http://www.neuber.com/typograph/

Here's an example of what it looks like...

How do I get the transparent space used in this layer:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/HunterD1983/TG.gif

I have also seen avatars that appear to be cut into pieces. I figure both effects are the same. How can they be done in Photo Shop?

when you open a file to work in, make sure that you have the initial settings to a transparent background. When you complete your work, use the save for web feature and save the files as either .gif.

.png can also perserve a transparent background but i am unsure if you can upload that as an av.

How did he edit the image to get that cut? I know how to set transparencies but how did he get the transparent area shaped like that.

could have been a couple of ways... for example, you can make an entire piece and then use the lasso tool to highlight the area you want to delete and delete each layer or another way is to use the erasor tool. These are 2 of the most common ways.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I went through as much of the thread as I could.

) What's the easiest/best way to remove anti-aliasing from the border of an image?

Best way I've found so far is to use the magic wand tool in PSP and use the "anti-alias" option for it.

Seen here: wand (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/wand.png)

The effects it has it somewhat effective:
- before (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/select-no-alias.png)
- after (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/select-anti-alias.png)

After that, it seems that it also effects how you manipulate the image, so cutting (deleting) the selected portions will just fade the colors into the background. Basically, I'll just use the paintbrush tool and go over it multiple times with the background color untill it blends to a single flat color. Actually there's usually 1 color left around the border that's slightly off-color with the background, so I just paint dump that.

Trying to find a faster/easier way than that though, for PS or PSP.

) Second question: Is there a easy way to add anti-aliasing to an image without resizing it?

Like, I don't want to soften or blur it, I just want to add a bit of anti-aliasing to it in order to increase the gradients. But naturally, I don't want to have to add the gradients in manually for each color.

Umm.. I suppose it is exactly like a blur or soften, but I was hoping for an alternate method that just increased the ammount of gradient and didn't make the image "fuzzy", so to speak.

Trace it with a vector program. Then you can do everything that you are wanting to do. TG knows more about this than I, but here is a tutorial to get you started.

Image -> Adjustments -> Replace Color
Play with the little dialog box until you get what you want. Basically, the selection box is the color you want to replace, and the replacement box is what you are replacing it with.

I'm nub to animate GIF's. I had an AV that I want to put a groove bar on which is animate, I followed the suggestion of not moving the GIF to the image but to move the images to GIF. But the problem I had in Imageready was that when I want to move the groove bar, I have to move it in ALL the frames, which I know shouldn't be like that where as I can move one frame of the groove bar and all of the rest will follow. Help would be highly appreciated...thanks.

Right next to the eyeball on the layers, there is another box. If you click on this box, it will bring up a chain-link icon. Select one of the layers, then click on the link icon for all the layers that you want to move along with the selected layer.

Then, when you move the layer, all of the linked layers will follow.

Sup Rei. I posted a little while ago about using the magic wand with anti-aliasing turned on. At the time, it wasn't very useful for what I was trying to do, but I think I found another use for it.

Basically, it's very useful for getting rid of anti-aliased boarders to images (resized sprites come to mind).

You probably already knew this, but I sure didn't (and I find it very interesting).

After selecting the background color, using the magic wand with anti-alias turned on, you can delete/cut the selection, which will make the anti-aliased pixels partially transparent. So, the parts of the image that were converted to partially-transparent pixels now blends with the new background color.

for example, here's an image with the background selected using the magic wand and anti-alias: selection (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/01.png). And here's what it looks like when you delete the selection: cleared (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/03.png). And if you modify the background color, it still blends nicely: switched (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/04.png).

This is a lot better than just paint-dumping the background color, as seen here: paint-dump (http://www.newwavemugen.com/~xenozip/tmp/02.png)

Anyway, I'm sure you already knew this, but I felt like sharing it with whoever else might be interested. Cleaning up images with blended boarders, and stuff.

what program are you using? If you are using photoshop, there is an option... save as. You will then be given the option of how to save it and the quality of the pic. You can easily trim the file size this way. Also, try and keep the resolution about 72. this will aslo help to shrink the file size.

witch photoshop is recomended because i have photosop elements3 or some thing like that but i always hear people opening a gif with imageready where can i find this program(s)

Rei
08-21-2005, 09:09 AM
Imageready comes with Photoshop 5.5 and above.

My favorite version is 5.5, because I do print work, and know what to expect from 5.5's cmyk mode. However, CS and above have a 5.5 compatibility mode, so these days I'm using CS.

Basically, it comes down to how fast your computer is. As the version number increases, so do the features, and it takes a beefier computer to run those features.

If you have a 1ghz+ w/ 512 ram computer, use CS or CS2. If you have a slower computer, you may be better off with 5.5 or 6. However, if you have a newer digital camera, you may want to go with CS2, because it allows you to do batch edits of raw camera files from some of the nicer digital cameras.

Of course, it is still personal taste, as everyone has a photoshop that they are comfortable with, so you might get different answers from different people.

Rei

You can do animated gifs and flaming text with elements. Just arrange each layer into a frame, and go save-for-web. Checkmark the box that says animate, it should be underneath the transparency tab. From there, it will let you adjust how long each frame displays.

Y2, I guess it depends on what else you have going on with your computer. At home, I have a computer that is a 1.2ghz with 512 ram that runs CS/CS2 just fine. Of course, I only have Premiere, Cubase, Creative Suite and ATI MMC running on it, nothing else. I do all my web browsing, IM, torrents, etc on my linux box...

If you already have a bunch of stuff, create a folder in the layers pallete, throw all the layers in your project into that folder, then grab that folder and drop that into the project that has the animated gif. Change the canvas size to match what you need.

1. Highlight one of the layers you want to link.
2. Then click the link box to the right of the Visibility (eye) icon for each of the layers you want to link.

Sup Rei, had a question about Alpha Channels.

I was working with this CvS2 Hibiki sprite rip here: http://members.cox.net/ldu_808/088.png

And basically, I've been trying to add in transparency manually, as such: http://members.cox.net/ldu_808/Image1.png

Basically, I seperated each color onto a seperate layer, and adjusted the transparency levels one by one.

However, some one told me that PS (or maybe some program like it) could create an alpha channel using a grey scaled copy of the image, and the darkest points would become the most transparent, and the lightest points would be the most opaque (or visa versa if the colors were inverted). Basically using the image copy as a guideline for the alpha levels of the OG.

So far, I've been working with PSP and haven't had any luck, and I'm a total newb with PS. Wondered if you (or anyone) could shed some light on how alpha channels work and what program(s) can work with them.

I had a question on what Xenozip had done in this image, don't know if it has been asked or explained right there in the post. Was wondering how Xenozip made the original slash effect to blend with the picture. I think read a few pages back about the magic wand tool. Is that what was done? Or was the Alphas used in this? Can someone explain to me? Thanks.

Xenozip had selected the color (normally done by using the magic wand with zero tolerance, then Select -> Similar, and then cut and paste each color to its own layer, then adjust the opacity of each layer.

He didn't like doing this because it was a pain, and didn't look in-game accurate. My response showed him a better way to do it, and how to get it to look in-game accurate.

Generally, you only use alpha channels if you want to save transparency information in one program, and export it to another. A common example is if you are making something in Photoshop that has some transparent overlays that will be used in Premiere. If you are compositing images within photoshop, there are better ways to do it, but I will answer the question so that you can do what you are saying you want to do.

Basically, you want to only have the layer that you have the alpha channel apply to visible. Click on your channels tab. Hold down the ctrl key and left click on the channel labeled RGB. On the bottom of the channels pallete, there is a black box with a white circle in it. If you hover your mouse over it, it will say "Save selection as channel." Click on that.

You have now made an alpha channel. From here on out you can use this channel to do a few different things, including exporting it to other programs that understand alpha channels, but for now we can stay in photoshop.

Go back to your layers pallete, and make sure the layer that you want to apply the transparency to is the highlighted layer. Go to the bottom of the pallete to the same black box with a white circle in it. Now, when you hover the mouse over it, it will say, "Add layer mask." Click on that.

Now, on that layer, the darkest points are the most transparent, and the lightest points are the most opaque.

If you want the lightest points to be most transparent, and the darkest points to be the most opaque, do the same thing, except, after you ctrl + click on the RGB layer, hit ctrl + shift + I, or from the menu, hit Select -> Inverse.

That should get you started. See if you can do what you were trying to do, and hit me up with any more questions.

Okay, so the way I color edit sprites is great, except when I encounter white. The way I do it:

- I duplicate the layer, the whole thing, or whatever I want colored, whatever.
- I colorize it to the color I want whatever specific part.
- then I do a layer mask > hide all
- and use the default white brush, which... colors the parts I want, to the color previously colorized.

...It doesn't work with white. And if I wanted to make something white, I couldn't do that either. Is there a better way?

ahhh Ive had this problem for a long time too and just a little while back, someone showed me their way of taking care of it.

-with the file opened up and selected go to select > colour range
-with the menu open, choose "sampled clours" and scroll the fuzziness to 0
-with the menu still open, choose the eyedropper tool and click on the spots of the sprite u want to colour (in your case, the white). the tool will select all the instances of that hue in the sprite. hit ok
-choose what colour u want and use the paintbucket to apply.
-repeat if the white has shadows.

On the subject of books, if you're interested in learning Illustrator, try The Adobe Illustrator CS Wow! Book by Sharon Steuer. I just started working through it and I've been really impressed so far.

If you take a sprite from here:

http://excaliburgames.digibase.ca/zweifuss/index.htm

and say you just want one frame of it, for a still avatar. I go to the frame, yadda yadda, select all and copy or cut. It shows a transparent background, but there's a small blue box around the character itself, I think it's some kind of slice (I'm completely unfamiliar with slices, I have no clue what they're even for), and when I paste it in photoshop, it has a white box around it, the size of the blue slice box. Been messing with it but I can't get it to go away, besides cropping the white out myself, but sometimes that interferes with the sprite, and basically -- is there an easy way to fix this?

Maybe I'll learn a little about slices from this.

Hmm, that's one way to do it, thanks, that's a helpful little tip. The only way to get a free premium is if someone else pays for it, or if you win a contest like the avatar battle going on right now.

ahhh Ive had this problem for a long time too and just a little while back, someone showed me their way of taking care of it.

Kind of delayed response, as I forgot that I made this, but thank you, I think I can work with that. Your avatar is hilarious, too.

see the radial buttons... next to the numbers on the right... click one of the others... there are many options on how to display your colors. you just accidentally clicked a differnt one.

I get a newsletter every month from Epilog Laser on how to do this or that with corel draw. I think they have some tutorials on their site, but you may have to poke around. They have some Corel project available to download here:
http://www.epiloglaser.com/sample_club.htm

Otherwise, just type in "corel draw tutorials" into google.

Corel Draw and Illustrator are more the same than they are different, so most things you learn in Illustrator can be carried over to Corel Draw.

Here is my original tutorial that was on this thread:
http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=10584
(Slightly edited)

Here is the quick and dirty recipe.

-Find animated gif.

-Save.

-Open in imageready

-Save as... *.psd and close

-Open *.psd in photoshop

-Link all the layers

-Resize canvas to 160x64 (Image... Canvas Size...)

-Move image within canvas to where you want it. (All linked layers should move with it).

-Save and close

-Open *.psd in imageready (It should still have all the frames animated like the original).

-Save optimized as... *.gif

-Done

You may add other flavors into the recipe depending on what you want the final product to taste like.

JonnyQuest

move one gif over to the other one.. expand the film strip on your animation tool bar by clicking the duplicate button.. and on each frame from your animation tool bar look over at your layer tool bar and select with the "visible eye" what you want to be seen in each individual frame animation. some one correct me if there's a better way..

you must open this in imageready, don't open the gif's in photoshop, jump to imageready first..

make sure you are saving the animation as a "gif or jpeg" in "save file type" on the "save as" window.. don't just put .jpeg or .gif on the end of your file name..

Well the reason that they are 1mb is because it sounds like you are taking them at high quality. you would have to reduce that. try placing your camera on its lowest settings and see how much of a difference it makes. Then adjust it till it looks good and gives you a nice picture. Also make sure that you are not shooting in Raw format. that will store eveything and will make for a huge file size.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've been doing. I figured since I payed all of that money for a 7MP camera, then I'm going to take 7MP pictures all the time. They do make for some nice prints though.:bgrin: I guess I'll go out and do some test shooting when I get some free time to see how low I can go and how good the quality will be. You mentioned something about "shooting in Raw format". Are you saying that I can still take 7MP pictures, but change the format to something more refined to cut down on file size?

depends on the camera.... but some of the higher end cameras will allow you to shoot in "raw" format. This format allows the camera to take the picture and stores it as well as informaiton about the colors. In most cameras, you are not given this option and the camera takes it's best guess at the colors.

this should help to explain it.
http://photography.about.com/library/weekly/aa061603a.htm

If you have the option to shoot in raw, it will produce a better picture but you will pay for it in the file size. ;)

you might want to speed up the animation a lil... 12 seems to hang a lil on the transformation... you might also try matching the colors a lil on the xcopy cable... looks too dark imo. he goes from a yelloish to b/w

you might also want to give some movement to cable... he looks all lonly there... frozen in time as it were...

Don't resize the sprites, they look really choppy.

The pause 12 takes in the air would make more sense if u added an emotional change to cable, like make him look confused, then surprised when 12 finally morphs.

Find cable's sprite pack so u can add his hit frames so it actually looks like hes getting smacked out by the viper beam instead of pulling the low-budget walk out of the av.

A background may help out more..something basic so when u reduce the quality, it doesn't turn to shit.

If u decide on making a bkg, change the font. If not, just scale it down a little. Hell, u can take out the text alltogether.

You have 15k of free space so u can play around with the beam animation to make it a bit more smooth.

I took a quick look at the program and it looks like the average photo manipulation software you would get when you buy a camera or a printer..

I'm fed up waiting for other members to make av's, so i got Photoshop and Imageready CS, and i've almost made my first av!:wow: BUT there's a snag- When I make animated av's and save optimized as .gif's I lose a HELL of a lot of quality. If i make a non-animated version in PS and flatten the image, it comes out perfect. But when I save optimized in IR it the .gif comes out grainy as heck. There must be a way to keep the quality of the image, and still have it animate. (And be under the 20kb limit, obviously  )

and this is the reason it is not as easy to be an av maker than one may think...

gif is only able to support 256 colors... jpg and other formats can handle more so when you optomise a pic into a gif, the format picks 256 colors that it thinks are the most used.

this will cause loss of hue in your colors and give the grainy look. the way to correct this, is to either lower the quality of your pic to allow for it to blend in more, or lower the colors you use... no reasy way out of it.

thats the price you pay for animation....

Hmm, so if I find a background with 256 colours (obviously from the standard web palette) then I should suffer no hue/colour/quality loss? I figured out something- if I optimize a gif directly there's no loss (duh it's already a gif), but if I save it as an .psd THEN optimize it the quality goes down the drain. Actaully I tried to get around this and work in IR with ONLY gif's but at the end, when you combine your background and animation, the result is still shitty. Guess what i'm asking is where can I find/ how do I make backgrounds that won't lose quality when optimized?

Yeah, i'm resizing both the gif and the background image to fit the av requirements.

Rei
12-22-2005, 01:53 PM
Yeah, i'm resizing both the gif and the background image to fit the av requirements.
As soon as you resize a gif image, PS/IR apply anti-aliasing and this increase the color pallete by a large margin. If possible, do not resize sprites. Resized sprites are the number one cause of file size increases.

Mr_Punkus
12-22-2005, 02:25 PM
So if I crop the sprites will the colour palette increase also? Basically any type of alteration will cause "dither" in the gif? I ask because the sprites are fine, it's the background that becomes grainy. I'm guessing it's the filters and effects i use in PS, (eg blending of colours which do not exist the the 256 colour palette) but you guys would know. I'm kinda disheartened to find out I can't make spectacular backgrounds for my animations.

Rei
12-23-2005, 06:10 PM
How can I make a color balance layer affect everything but one or two layers underneath?Any of the adjustment layers also create a layer mask by default. As long as the layer mask is selected (there is a box around it) then anything you paint black will be excluded from the adjustment layer.

So, to have the layer mask not affect a layer beneath it, control+click the layer you want to exclude. This will create a selection that is the same as the layer you control-clicked on. Then, make sure the layer mask is highlighted, and use the bucket to fill the selection with black.

Is it even possible to place multiple gif's/animations into a image using imageready? i read somewhere that you can only have one active animation.

http://members.cox.net/cham13/evo/m1x4h.gif

2 different sprites working at the same time...

you just have to set up each frame as you go

Stroke a 1 pixel border. For multiple borders I think you create a new layer for it.

Nightraid, try the marquee tool w/ the gradiant tool, or is that what you meant? I couldn't figure out any other easier ways.

in image ready.. above your picture should be folder tabs w/ one that says "optimized".. switch to it then click on the yellow exlimation sign thingy then go over to your navigator and click on the arrow for your advanced options then optimize file to size

but if u wanna know how to make MULTI-BORDERS like mine...here we go

1. EVERYBORDER has its own layer, so if you want 2 borders, make 2 new layers and so on.

2. just make sure ur new layers are above your AV, preferably the FIRST LAYERS

3. take the square MARQUEE t00l and outline the new layer (bottom), so now the new layer is OUTLINED as a WHOLE

4. now with the square MARQUEE t00l

do this: right-click--->STROKE--->2 pt and whatever color you want the BORDER to be. now DESELECT the frame and you should see the border around the AV.

5. select the other new LAYER (TOP), and repeat STEPS 3 and 4 (but in step 4 change the pt SIZE to 1) DESELECT the frame and you should see the 2 multi-layers.

*note this could be done with as manylayers as DESIRED, but i would stick to 3 or less!

Here's the problem. I want text to "grow" into place, so I've got eight layers, all saying the same thing, eight different font sizes. I put each text layer into position, frame by frame, and while in IR, it animates correctly. But when I save opt as to a .gif, each sequential frame just builds on top of the last, instead of replacing it. I thought it might have just been a FireFox problem, but it's like that in Windows as well.

Here's what I end up with:

Any help?

Ravener, make sure you are using your layers pallete to hide the other layers in each frame of animation using the eyeball. Click on each frame and look at your layers pallete, only one eye should be showing. If you still have problems let us know.

Murt, that is done by double clicking a layer which brings up an Effects dialogue box, what you're looking for is in the Outer Glow section.

Layers are hidden as they should be and in ImageReady it animates fine, it's only after outputting to a .gif that you wind up with what I showed.

I've tried to upload the .psd (so you could see what I'm trying to accomplish) but I keep getting a invalid file error on geocities.

How do you add borders to a piece of work?

Pretty easy for avatars, just make a new layer, drag it on top of the others, hit ctrl+a, go to Edit>Stroke. Set your width and color of the border, set it to Center.

If you want to add one with a fade effet for a larger piece of work in CS2 (not sure about other versions), you would do ctrl+a, go to Select> Modify> Border. Pick how big you want your border to be then set your foreground color to whatever you want it to be and hit alt+backspace.

Ravener: I haven't quite figured out the problem just yet, everything seems to be in working order, however, when I save it with a white background, the other text layers do not show up. I'll be messin with it for a bit to figure out how to have it transparent.

Update: I deleted all but the first frame of the animation, and did some test frames and we have this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/severgen/Slayer5.gif

So it was something that happened in the actual animation frames, I'd suggest doing what I did and deleting all except the first frame, then re animating it. Also set your mode on your optimization pallette to Selective. It should work fine then.

Ravener

Thanks TG, I just cheated and used a background the same color as the page it'll be on to give it the same effect. I did try to get a transparent version out of it by saving a white bg version, opening it up seperately and magic eraser-ing the bg back out, but it still came out the same, so I'm not convinced it's even in the layers/frames.

At any rate, I got what I needed out of it, I'll just have to change the background color and re-up it in the event that the page color changes. Thank you for your help.

Then do the Image - Adjustments - Replace Color combo.

I forget at the moment the exact thing for sprites, but I believe that you want to do fuzziness at zero, select the color you are replacing, then select the color you want it changed to.

Before you hit "OK" hit "Save." Save your settings as "whatever.axt"

Highlight the next layer that you want to change, Then do Image - Adjustments - Replace Color. From here, you are going to hit "Load." Load "whatever.axt" and then hit okay. Repeat until done.

something similar to the pic you attached can be done by:
image->mode->grayscale then convert it back to rgb.
set the layer to multiply
then create a new layer underneath the multiply layer and brush the hair with the colours you want, starting with flat color and working yourself up into the highlights, but that depends on how much definition you want.

the same goes for coloring lineart although you need to create the definitions yourself.
I hope that makes it clear enough.

Quite the long way to go about it. Instead add a hue/saturation adjustment layer. (Click on the yin/yang circle in the layer palette and select hue/saturation. Set the saturation to -100. Then, with the adjustment layer selected, use the black paintbrush and paint any section that you want to be in color.

Im sorry if I don't look through the first 38 pages. If ever this question has already been answered just tell me I'll start to search through.

Which program would be best to crop animated gifs. I have the animated sprite but it's kinda too big (Ky's sacred edge) so do I have to crop every frame?

Also which program is best to create animated gifs? I can't seem to figure it out in photoshop.

you cant animate in ps... but image ready comes with ps and is able to do that for you. open the image and you should be able to cross that with all its layers into ps to edit.

in this case, probably not an easy task. Since the file is a single image, you would have to remove each piece and redraw the picture in the missing gaps.

if this was a photoshop file, you would be able to hide certain layers.

I already checked out the links on the first page of this thread but I was unable to find what I needed. Can anybody help me find a CvS2 sprite of Ryo's HK/RH (the white one) costume? Thanks in advance.

You make your own request thread if you want a new av.
This thread is for image manip questions.

I've got the basic Photoshop, and when I reduce pictures to 160x64, the image gets cropped. Is there any way to make the image smaller without it being cropped? You can notice it in this av I made for myself, but I actually like it showing just the mouth.

In other words, there are sections of his motion that occupy the same space during the motion. If you don't want it to get darker, you will have to make the overlapping sections semi-transparent or cheat and move him around in the picture so that nothing overlaps, but it doesn't look like the second option will work because you don't have enough background.

make sure you have the rollover on forever..
you may have it on once..

if you're wondering where that's at:
window/ animation.. bottom button farthest to the left..

I am seeing some high res images of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Super Smash Bros. Mayhem in a lot of people's sigs.

Can someone provide me those images? I am planning to make my own desktop wallpapers. Thanks.

Rei,

I'm looking for an old tutorial that was on sho ages back. It showed how to take a sprite and make it into a chibi sprite. I believe the sprite used in the tutorial was Magneto. Any clue on how i can go about finding it?

how are you guys going about making these avatars....for the one i have now, i made it on a bigger canvas (cant remember the size) and then i just hoped it looked decent as i scrunched it onto a 160x64 canvas....after that i changed it to index color and saved it as a png while crossing my fingers and hoping its small enough....i'm just thinking theres gotta be a more systematic way of doing this...

also, i'd like to know how i can get the type of lighting effect thats in kidzero's av...

We use Photoshop.

I usually use lens flares, then I randomly wave it & set the blending mode to Lighten, Screen or Soft Light. Depends what I think looks good. I also use Brightness/Contrast and Curves to get my lighting effects.
