View Full Version : If you have a question, CLICK HERE FIRST. Image Manipulation Q & A V.2.0.1
ATTN: Spam and Flames will be deleted from this thread and any of the other Image Mishmash Stickys.
If you are wondering about how to do something with your image manipulation program, this is the place where you need to ask your question. Although I may not know the answer, someone in Image Mishmash will know, or I can find a link that will answer your question.
Before you post in this thread, please read through the basic guidelines first. http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/thread26858.php Failing to read and follow those guidelines may get your post deleted from this thread.
Remember, there is always more than one way to do the same thing. None of the ways to get from point A to point B are better or worse, just different. If you like your method better, state why, but don't start a flame war about how someone's method sucks. (For example, removing a background can be done with the eraser tool, the background eraser tool, the layer mask, the path tool, the selection tool, or the quick mask mode. Any of these methods can be used. I prefer the Layer mask method, but I'm not going to insult someone for using the path tool to get the same job done.)
Also, I will not answer basic questions like "how do I open a file?" or "how do I tell windows what size this image is?" If you don't know what a layer or a filter is, there is plenty of information in the links below.
This is not a W4R3Z thread. Don't ask where you can get the latest image editing software.
In the past, I have done mini-tutorials in other threads, and from time to time I will be cutting and pasting those into this thread. Feel free to comment on any of the mini-tutorials that I post into this thread. From here on out I am going to put all my mini-tutorials in this thread, and I encourage others to post mini-tutorials (that they created) in this thread.
Please do not ask how to do a finished piece. There is not a single tutorial for designing finished pieces, just various elements. It is unreasonable to post a fully rendered work and wonder how it's done.
It is okay to ask how to do individual elements of a finished work, but there is no one tutorial that will teach you how to combine several elements into one finished piece. I can show you how to do individual effects, but don't expect for there to be a turn-key solution that will show you how to do what most people spend years in college learning.
So ask questions, that is how you improve, and everyone is welcome to respond. Just make sure you can explain WHY you think something is good or bad or neat or whatever. If you don't know why, then ask!
Following are links that will not only answer most of your questions, but will also be a good selections of links to return to from time to time to get inspiration and resources.

Here is my original tutorial that was on this thread:
http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=10584
(Slightly edited)
Here is the quick and dirty recipe.
-Find animated gif.
-Save.
-Open in imageready
-Save as... *.psd and close
-Open *.psd in photoshop
-Link all the layers
-Resize canvas to 160x64 (Image... Canvas Size...)
-Move image within canvas to where you want it. (All linked layers should move with it).
-Save and close
-Open *.psd in imageready (It should still have all the frames animated like the original).
-Save optimized as... *.gif
-Done
You may add other flavors into the recipe depending on what you want the final product to taste like.

1. file--->new (create a new image with a transparent background)
2. make this image size 1 x 2 pixels. (so its basically 2 pixels VERTICALLY)
3. ZOOM all the way in, fill one of the two pixels in BLACK. leave the other side alone. (so now you should see 2 pixels vertically one BLACK and the other TRANSPARENT)
4. now take the SQUARE MARQUEE TOOL AND OUTLINE THE WHOLE image.
5. with image still outlined, go to EDIT--->DEFINE PATTERN--->OK
so...now you have saved the SCANLINE PATTERN, whenever u need to use it...just FILL the DESIRED AREA with the PATTERN ABOVE and you will get SCANLINES!
You can also do a 3x3 image, and make all the pixels black except for the four corners. Make those transparent.
Hit Ctrl-A to outline the whole image.
Go to Edit-->Define Pattern-->Ok
Now you have a grid pattern, and whenever you need to use it, just use the paint bucket tool, and fill with the pattern.
If you want to change the color of your scanlines, or your grid, doubleclick on its layer, and select the color overlay. Now change the color of the scanline/grid.

but if u wanna know how to make MULTI-BORDERS like mine...here we go
1. EVERYBORDER has its own layer, so if you want 2 borders, make 2 new layers and so on.
2. just make sure ur new layers are above your AV, preferably the FIRST LAYERS
3. take the square MARQUEE t00l and outline the new layer (bottom), so now the new layer is OUTLINED as a WHOLE
4. now with the square MARQUEE t00l
do this: right-click--->STROKE--->2 pt and whatever color you want the BORDER to be. now DESELECT the frame and you should see the border around the AV.
5. select the other new LAYER (TOP), and repeat STEPS 3 and 4 (but in step 4 change the pt SIZE to 1) DESELECT the frame and you should see the 2 multi-layers.
*note this could be done with as manylayers as DESIRED, but i would stick to 3 or less!

In ImageReady, when you have to save optimized as,what is the best setting so that the quality of the gif is as close to the psd as possible?

@ Rei - What's the "use" if a watermark? Isn't there anyway around it, which then defeats the purpose of a watermark? What is IT exactly?
If you place a watermark on an image, then you release the watermarked image, the general release image and any images derived from that image will always be of lower quality and/or be cropped closer than the original. If you were to file a copyright injunction in the future, you would need the original file w/out the watermark to prove that you are the copyright owner of the original image.
It gets more complex from there, but that is the basic gist of it.
BlodiaVulcan5
03-25-2003, 04:50 PM
hmm... i'm still in the dark with this. Do you have/can find any examples of the differences?
I will try and make this quick because I don't have much time, but I will explain more tomorrow if you wish.
Example.
Photographer takes your senior highschool photos. You order a basic package of pictures. The main thing that you should notice is that, all of your pictures have a foil embossed watermark in the corner.
Now, say you give all these photos away, then you become famous. Someone that you gave the photos to grabs a scanner, photoshop and a dye-sub printer and starts making copies (with a cloned out watermark) and selling them on ebay.
The original photographer can sue the person selling those photos on ebay because the original photographer is the copyright holder.
Now this is where it gets important. The judge hearing the case isn't going to ask for much. He will just ask both parties to prove that they have the original. The photographer can just pull out the negative (without watermark mind you) and show it to the judge. The ebay guy will only be able to show the judge a digital file, or a print made from the digital file. Not only that, but any place that the watermark was removed can be compared to the original, which will add further proof.
The photographer will be awarded compensetory and punitave damages.
Digital watermark is more important. If a photographer is shooting digital, he/she should make sure to keep the original (.raw if possible) files under lock and key. Anything that they sell/publish should have the watermark and be of lower quality than the .raw file. If a court case comes up, the photographer can bring the .raw file to court and show the original without watermark. They can also show image degredation where the watermark was removed.
Basically, Copyright law protects the original creator of the work, and as long as they can prove that they own the original copy (without watermark) then they can sue anyone that tries to sell/profit off of their work.
Here is something to think about. When you get photos professionally done, NO photographer will release the negatives to you. If they do, they also release their copyright ownership.

Aaaah, okay. thanks for clearing it up, sensei. :)
one more question ( a n00bish question): I'm unfamiliar with a certain term, a "photographer's Negatives" reffers to...?

Undeveloped media = Film
Developed media = Negative or Slide
Negative burned onto paper creating a positive = Print

I've said this many times. Do not ever move the animation into something else. Move the background into the animation.
Don't think of it as inserting the vega animation into the background, rather move the background into the animation.
thats fare enough, but how do you get 2 animated gifs into one picture?
bad-tofu

now tryin to add add 2 animations to the same image isn't tht hard but requires you to sync up both images in each frame. its not for the week of heart.

say for example, u have an animation that is 5 frames repeating, and another one that is 3 frames repeating.
most likely (for the animation's fluidty sake) u make a 15 frame picture in an infinite loop.
the 5 frame animation repeats 3 times, while the 3 frame animation repeats 5 times, both in an infinite loop

ok here's one for you
how would u go about emulatiing the effects of this avatar?
would i have to create a yellowish design with white blurred lights set on "color" layer?

Looks fairly simple. If you discount the "frame" and name, the rest is 5 layers.
From top to bottom.
Layer 1: Flood fill with yellow, set blending mode to "color"
Layer 2: Blurred airbrushing and/or eyecandy effects
Layer 3: Standard Magneto Sprite with the cape masked off and desaturated so that it picks up the color from layer 1.
Layer4: A folder layer. Inside the folder would be 4 layers. One for each animation frame of the cape. Set the opacity for the folder at something that would match the effect you see in the av.
Layer 5: Standard random b/w background. Render clouds, liquify, levels, and all that jazz. Make it easy and do some eyecandy.
That should be it. Play with everything until you get what you want. Layer 2 could also be done by doing a b/w gradient fill ->difference clouds -> levels supercombo finisher.

white eats up any color layer above it.
how would u desaturate magneto? im not 100% sure what it does, shame on me ><
one more thing
think u can send me your chibi charlotte sprite?

1. To fix the white, change the layer blending to darken instead of color. (I think, I'm not at a computer w/photoshop.)
2. Shift+Ctrl+U (Again, this is from memory, but I'm sure it is in the menu somewhere, prolly under adjustments).
3. I will try and find that chibi charlotte.

I'm trying to make my first grid. I get what this is saying, but I don't know which tool changes single individual pixels black. All I've been running into are tools that take out more than one pixel.

Select the pencil tool. Then hit the "[" button until the pencil tool is size 1. While you are on the airbrush, brush, eraser, or pencil tool, you can hit the "[" key to decrease the size of the tip or hit the "]" key to increase the size of the tip.

a better way to get that effect is using the screen option. Itll look alot realer plus it wont camo when it overlays something :)
its really cool b/c if u take any image (say lightning for example) and put it on top layer and screen it, the black sky will just dissapear leaving u with just the lighting to do with as u please. This is a big part of "airbrushing"
ie- my avatar :)
Hi, I'm trying to emulate this effect where the picture looks like it's been brushed on, or rather the edges are brushed out, leaving it with a "sketchy" but transparent border. I tried using layer mask and reaveal all, but it just doesn't seem right...any tips?

From what you are saying, I would say that the solution to your problem would be to use clipping groups. Here is a tutorial on it. (Read through the whole thing, it is split up on different pages, clipping groups are on the last page.)

alright im not sure why but I can't save animated gifs anymore - it just does save as: and only option is .bmp. I tried doing properties copying the actual image url into a link scenario:
<a href="http://www.site.com/image.gif">image</a>
save that as a .html and use the link to download the gif and that didn't work either. anyone know of some reasons i can't save animated .gifs anymore? And better yet ways to fix the problem?

What program are you using? Well I use photoshop and when I want to save a gif I just go to save as web and it gives you the option of what you want your work to be saved as gif, jpg etc.

Take them out of the /fonts directory, then paste them back in. A little dialogue box pops up saying 'Installing Fonts', and you should be good to go. Saving them directly to that folder doesn't install them.

Ask him. And if he doesn't tell, just figure it out yourself. Getting people to tell you how to make other people's effects turns you into nothing but a trendwhore.
That's for sure. For learning sake, it might be good to figure out, but why not try something more original. Sure, it may take skill to follow a difficult trend, but not as much as starting a difficult trend.
(If you really need to know, I can tell you, it has to do with the airbrush. Not that difficult of an effect.)

I'm here, I just haven't been able to post because I've been working overtime recently. Things should get back to normal in the next month, and I can tend to my poor dilapidated thread.

...and BV5 depending on who you talk to, I do one of two things.
A. Photographic post-production.
B. Pre-press prep work.
Basically, I take raw photos from the professional photographists and prep them so that they can be used by printers. (Most photographists work in RGB and don't know crap about layout or basic graphics and pretty text. Most printers work in CMYK and want a press ready file.) There is more to it than that, but that is the basic idea.

I know the real annoying and time consuming way to do it. Zoom in and then use the Pollygonal or Magnetic Lasso tool.

I wanna know how BV5 makes those circles glow. I don't care about the circles themselves heh. I wanna make the words in my AV glowin animated, like they're on fire or something along those lines.
EDIT: Also, what should I be using? PS6 or 7? I have and use 7, but I remember a while back when I was learning the basics of it that there was an effect in 6 called color dodge I believe. They said it was still in 7, but the effect it produced was less desirable. Oddly enough, it was "bugged" in 6, and fixed in 7, yet more people preferred the "bugged" results. Anyway, 6 or 7!?
And Majestros: also try using the magic wand tool. Holding down shift to select more than one area. That thing works, well, magic :)

There are websites with free filters, and I'm sure you could find some of the more famous filters on Kazaa or some other filesharing program.

Not sure if this is the best way, but open up your sprite, choose a part that you want to recolor with the Magic Wand tool. Then click Select -> Similar. This will select everything else in the pic with the same color. Then go to Image -> Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation, and mess with the bars.

In all honesty I feel the best way is to do it pixle by pixle. if you use Fill, colors sometimes you will have a bleed and it will distort the origional effect. It takes longer but worth the time.

Select the two colors that you want. One as the foreground color swatch, and one on the background swatch in the lower part of the tool picker tool bar. Select the gradient fill tool and do a gradient fill using the two colors that you selected. Go to filter --> render --> difference clouds. Then hit ctrl+f to render the difference clouds again.

Hmm, then I think I might be misinterpreting your directions.
1. choose 2 colors
2. make a gradient using those 2 colors
3. render difference clouds
4. render difference clouds
that gives me a "cloud" effect with 2+ colors?

Yes. You are correct. If you render the difference clouds the first time, it will give you roughly the opposite of the color gradient that you choose. Render difference clouds again, and it should give you the opposite of that, which, most of the time, is what you began with.
Now, if you want to go beyond the 2 colors, just click on the gradient bar and use the gradient editor to add as many colors as you want to add into the mix.

y2j, the solution to your problem is found in a pressure sensitive tablet. Photoshop does support them, and you can get the effect that you want with them.
DF and YahnV, Why must you use the wrong tool for the job? Photoshop is a raster-based program, and doesn't do vector graphics very well. Move to a vector based program and you can do more stuff. (CorelDraw, Quark, Illustrator, Etc...)

I'm not saying that you can't do it in photoshop, but you must realize that all the vector graphic abilities in photoshop are plug-ins. Using a program that has native vector support will make everything go alot smoother.
I like CorelDraw, mainly because it has better support for japanese fonts, and it is very easy to use CorelDraw to get good graphics for plotters, engravers, and dies.
Most of the professional world uses Quark Xpress, and that is what I recommend.
However, if you don't want to go into getting a graphics job, and you have no plans on making banners, and/or stickers, then I would say you should go with Illustrator. It isn't so industrial strength, and there is a short learning curve because it is an Adobe product.

I'm not sure if you're saving from the web and its only saving one frame or making an animation and its only saving the first frame of your creation.
if from the web - clear your cache
if from your own creation - first off you should be in Adobe ImageReady in which case you then should just change the file type to .gif on the right hand side on the Optimize toolbar.
if your in Photoshop it will only display the first frame because it does not support animation.

that process you followed, it only saves 1 frame from the animated gif. If you have image ready, then here's what you can do:
-open image ready
-open the animated gif
-now look on the bottom right hand corner at your layers box, and you should see an "eye" symbol in a small box, the frame with the eye symbol was the one that showed up when you saved it as a psd by itself. Well instead, click in the boxes where the eye would appear in the other layers, and a chain should show up in the box. That's where you link all the layers, link all the layers together, then save the whole thing as a psd.
now when you open the psd file of whatever you had in photoshop, all the frames should come with it instead of just 1.
i hope i was clear in my directions

on the file box itself, click the tab optimize. that way you can see what it will look like upon saving as optimized.
now in IR look on the far right, and look for Lossy, Dither, and Color. Change the color all the way to 256 and adjust the dither and lossy until you have it how you want it.

Ok, I've found out how to change the color settings of optimized. Is there any way to make the settings different for certain frames (ei make some frames 64 color, and other frames 128 color) or do I simply have to save and combine the different frames and then re-chain them together?

Mac is better than PC. Just see if you can get Imageready, or possibly a newer version of Photoshop that has Imageready bundled with it. Upgrades for photoshop are not that expensive. You can also get gimp, and if you have OSX, Cinepaint.
Perfect Cell, the only way to save different frames at different optimizations is to use Photoshop to save each frame optimized differently, and then use imageready to combine them as one animation. This method is ghetto and doesn't work very well, but it is the best that you will find for PS/IR.

Alright ive had this problem with my ps7 for a while. My font sizes are all fucked up. What used to be say size 10-11 is now like 1-3. To make micro text i have to go down to decimals like .7-.9 which is quite annoying. Any help?

hmm odd
well in your character tab check the settings should look like:
T.height:100%
T.width:100%
(this is probably your problem, if say its at 25% and 25% your font would be at 1/4 the size it should be at)
Another thing that could have effect although I doubt it is check to see if your Fractional Widths is checked. In your text window (should contain a tab called character and a tab called Paragraph) press the arrow next to the tabs and check if Fractional Widths is checked.... it should be.
This should solve your problem - if not let me know and I'll ask my friends what else the problem can be.

Adding to this, if you need to bring up the character tab, it is on the menu under "Window --> Character"

All right. Thanks alot for the help.

a sprite is a bitmap used in 2d video games. sprite complexity varies - the older the game the simpler the sprite. A true sprite is the bitmap used on the character in the actual game.

"Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 160 by 160 pixels or 20480 bytes (whichever is smaller)."
You're picture was over 30 [I can't remember exactly I think it said 36kb the limit is basically 20kb.

well i've never done it because i prefer my own style but i would venture to say the easiest way with Photoshop and ImageReady is to just make a graphic with small airbrushed circles scattered around then make another one of the same image but make the airbrushed circles larger and a light opacity .... say 20%. Then again - same size but 40%. Keep doing that until 100%. Then import them as frames to ImageReady and it should have the effect your looking for.... (might need to change times on frames and perhaps rerun the same frames so it not only fades in but it fades out as well)

okay I'm not at all sure since I have no idea what avatar you're talking about and when searching for user: renegade his/her avatar was a baby in a hooded sweatshirt. please post the avatar you are referring to.
in the mean time for transparency (see the dark blue or light blue or anything else) you simply make the parts you want to be transparent a shade that doesn't appear ANYWHERE else in your image. Then do 'save for web' and choose .gif. Select Transparency (checkbox) and set a transparency - I use diffusion transparency. Then choose the color you want to be transparent on the color tab on the right [right under the menu tab].

It is no longer a filter, but rather, integrated as part of Imageready.
Because it was originally a 3rd party plug-in, you can re-enable it in photoshop by copying it from the plug-ins folder in 5.5 or 6, into the plug-in folder in 7.
...or you could just use the "jump to imageready" button in Photoshop.

Um I have to disagree - professionals all do it the way I said because its the easiest and the most professional. All you have to do is save it for the web as a .gif and choose your transparency. How exactly is working with layer masks easier?

Not layer masks, clipping groups.
Doing it as clipping groups retains all the information in the image, and all the transparency is dynamic rather than permament. It allows for revisions and touch-ups later.

Yes. The best way is by layers if the part you want to rotate is on a seperate layer. Otherwise you have to select it first.
Then in either event instead of rotating canvas go to Edit > Transform > Rotate.

Magnetro: I'll gte back with you on that pen question if someone else dosen't answer first.
Demon:
1> (Windows OS) go to site that has fonts like "http://www.dafont.com/en/".
2> Click the "Download Pc" button next to the font that you like.
3> Save the file directly to your desktop.
4> Goto my computer>C: (or wherever your programs files are stored)> program files> common files> Adobe> Fonts
5> Unzip the font you downloaded to your desktop (if they are zipped)
6> Drag the unzipped font files to that "Fonts" folder
7> Reboot your PP7 and now the new fonts should be there
BTW, not all fonts work in pp7 but most (95%) do, so don't freak if one doesn't work. Also, there font files have all types of funky icons so don't even sweat it, just dump that whole shit in the "Fonts" folder.

When you get to the "stroke path" part, click on the tab in the upper right hand corner. (Next to the file browser.) This will allow you to make custom brush shapes and adjust the stroke size, etc.

I've answered this question before so in the future please run a simple search of the forum before asking a question.
Anyways. If you are on Windows XP you unzip the .tt files wherever you want and then go into Control Panel and goto Fonts and then Install New Fonts.
If you are on an older version of Windows you need to unzip the .tt files directly to your C:\Windows\Fonts folder and then in that folder locate the file you just unzipped and double click on it. You should see a page appear with all the characters appear. Once this is done restart your Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and your fonts should be there.

`Sup. Glad there`s a thread like this. Anyway, two questions for anyone that`s able to answer.
1) This might be directed more toward BlodiaVulcan, but I was curious as to how you get that "vibrate" effect in your avatars like that. No intention of ganking your style.
2) Also how is this, what I will call "dream mist" effect seen in many of SeoJi`s avatars done? Here`s one of his of Kula Diamond. It seems that there`s a haze/fog over the random surges of purple light, so just wanted to know how that was done.
.. And speaking of those "purple light bursts," are those just white streaks with a purple Outer Glow?
Sorry about all the questions, and I appreciate any help offered.
EDIT: Seems I can`t attach it, but you can see SeoJi`s avatars in his request thead to see what I mean.

Well for starters - use the Pen tool or the Quickmask to make your selection otherwise its going to be a half-arsed job. As far as why you can't go to the left.... I have no idea --- is there picture to the left? If so it should allow it.... Perhaps post a screenshot of you making your selection at the exact time when you want to go left. Okay I'll explain what I know and the best I can.
The Background looks like first it was a white - to blue gradient or just a plue box feathered and deleted close to the left side. Then it is just lines and such created by the person. For the merging - I assume you mean the blue guile. That was probably done with blending options on him. Play around and you'll understand them better the only ones I can give technical properties of are Multiply and Screen. Multiply deletes all white and Screen deletes all black (I might have it backwards).
For the hair its hard to say - without knowing the character and what it looked like to begin with. If the characters hair is a simpler version of that I would say it was done with the smudge tool and then blurs and similar things.
For SeoJi's backgrounds I won't say because I'm tired of hearing that question - figure it out and simpler tutorials have been posted before.
For airbrushing you'll have to just play around - its a tool not a style. Use it however you feel comfortable - its best with a Wacom but works fine with a mouse.
For crystals there are methods you can find by searching google for doing it with just photoshop but for the best results you'll want a 3D program. Any of the following will work - I reccommend Blender as its the best for free. POV-Ray is also VERY POWERFUL but its somewhat hard to use. All of the ones below are completely free.
Blender3D (http://www.blender3d.org)
POV-Ray (http://www.povray.org)
Maya Free Edition (http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml[/url)
G-Max a free version of 3D Studio Max supposed to be for gamers. (http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/)
3D programs are somewhat difficult. Here is probably the best resource you'll find:

.jpeg reduces sharpness
.gif reduces colors
by optimizing it as a .gif unless you use very few colors .gif optimization usually isn't the way to go. Of course if you do have few colors check how small you had to optimize it - 32colors? 64 colors? 128 colors? 256 colors?
chances are your better off optimizing it as a .jpeg since it looks like your missing some shades of red.
Morphiend
08-11-2003, 09:22 AM
i went back and messed with the settings a little..turned something off called "diffusion" which got rid of the graininess but made the gif too big..i then took it down from 128 no diffusion to 64 no diffusion..it's not as sharp but it made it small enough..

There are infinite possibilities here are the 3 main ones:
Choice 1. Create a new layer > fill it with a shade of blue > use blending options and/or opacity
Choice 2. Use Image->Adjustments->Hue/Saturation and then check colorize and go at it.
Choice 3. Use Image->Color Balance and go at it.

semi-transparent can be done with coding so if it was your site you want it for i could tell you how and if thats the case let me know. ill presume its for use on here though in which case you can't code.
semi-transparent can't be done in this case. to make something transparent you choose "save for web" and then you'll see on the left a bunch of small color boxes choose any ones you want to be transparent and press the transparency button at the bottom and the other options as needed.

no no no.... you misunderstood me. I said 2 different things that you could be referring to when trying to create transparency. You said the second thing I said is what you're going for that creates stuff such as this:
http://www.media44.com/av/eli2.gif
No matter what background its on you will always see that background. This is done with the method I said. So now then - explain exactly what you're trying to do please.

The fastest way for Photoshop 6.0 and 7.0 is on the Options Bar (the bar under your file/edit/image/etc...) use the top where it says Brush: you can choose brushes and use the "Master Diameter" to size any brush. For the more complex stuff you'll still need to use the Brush Palette.

nononono, that's what i'm referring to when i say "dock window". I'm asking if i can switch brush sizes and whatnot via keyboard, if it's applicable.

Replace Color or Channel Mixer.
Both will work - replace color in this instance will probably get you the same or better results with less work.

aha! thanks, man. much help appreciated. :) :D
I have a couple of questions about PS7. They are kinda easy so could somebody help me?:
Ques 1.
I set the size to the SRK ava size of 160 x 64. I don't know how to add pictures to it tough. Could some one tell me how to place pictures in it?
Ques 2.
How do you only use parts of a picture in the post, such as the head in a picture and not the whole body? And vis-versa?
Ques 3.
How do you resize images so they fit the 160 x 64 size more easier and less distorted?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Well...
You will resize any images by Image Size
Then use Custom Size (160 x 64). Make move fit 160 x 64. If you dislike, then undo twice. (make right size into 160 x 64). I did do many times. XD

I understood the resizing by image size but when you started talking about custom sizing you lost me. :( could you explain that part a little better please. Thanks DeafNYCPlayer! :)
Also can someone tell me how to use only parts of the pictures such as the character and not the backround or the head of a characters body and thats it, no body just the head and vis-versa? Thanks for the help!

Image Size = picture size
Custom Size = check picture
For example,
Original Sprite:
http://www.dennogumi.org/valhalla/images/cast_sanada.jpg
Sprite (character)- original 212 x 414
I made reduce into 150 x 350? or 120 x 300? (automatic pixels) by Image Size
Then pick Custom Size into 160 x 64 pixels. Move image into right picture (face).
http://www.boomspeed.com/dnp72/SanadaRonSRK3.jpg
If you talk about animation sprite, then it is really hard for newbies. I was lucky to manage it (you need to take time learn).
*psst, I have to go. I eat my dinner. I may come back later and explain to you more, okay? *
Thanks DNP72! That actually helped alot. I am trying to make my self an av right now so this is helping a lot. Thanks again! :)
But how the hell do you insert pictures into the av. I start it then put it as 160 x 64 pixels, but then it is blank white??? How do I insert pics in them?
Here is what I do. Something I am doing must be wrong so I will tell you everything that I do so you guys can help me out better.
1. I open PS7.
2. I select new, then name it, then size it to 160 x 64 pixles.
3. I open a picture I want to use.
4. I know have 2 boxes up. (the picture and the blank canvas)
From their I am mostly just loss. When I click on the pictures top to image size I try to put it to 160 x 64 pixles but it always switches the other variable.(height changes width and vis-versa) How do I do like you said DNP72. I can't find custom size on the picture or blank canvas. So all I want to know is the basic's. How can I take the picture I want ( or parts of the picture I want) and put it on the blank canvas. (my av) By doing so also making it smaller to the av's size (160 x 64) without distortion. Please help me again. I need more basic instructions cause I am just learning how to use PS7. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to explain this to me. :)

Image Size next to Custom Size
.gif = animated or blank background
.jpeg = white background
Open any sprites or images first.
Work on sprites or images with image size and Custom Size under "Image"

DNP72: I was messing around in PS7 today and came up with this "avatar". I could not find custom size but could find canvas size so I just did what I could. I imaged size it smaller then canvas sized it to 160 x 64 and moved it to the blank. Then I wrote in a name. It's pretty basic but I don't think it's that bad for my first Ava. Could you check it out and tell me maybe some more suggestions such as how to insert more than one picture into the frame and such. And could you also tell me how to make it say the "nicknames" (in this one it is sabertooth) better, more cooler ways. Thanks! :)
Here is the Av:
http://www.iownjoo.com/freeimghost/MasCo/SabertoothAva.jpg
Also I have 2 more questions:
1.
How do most of you make cooler backrounds with better designs and such? I could only do basic color backrounds?!?
2.
How do you not take the backround of the picture with the part of the picture you are trying to move?
Thanks for the help in advance! :)

alright man now im gonna answer your second question which was how do you not take the background of the picture with the part of the picture you are trying to move.
ok to do that all you have to do is bust out the eraser tool and erase the background of the original after you have pasted it on there ( i wait until after i have moved it into position and everthing is rihgt then i erase everything else)

In ps7, i make a new layer over other layers and i paste a picture. The picture has a white border which overlaps my other layers, how can i get rid of this border so i can just have the picture without having to rip the pic out. I tried changing the layer/blending options to multiply/darken, it got rid of the white border but also affected the picture too, which i don't want...
Before i used to rip the image but this pic is just too big...big thanks if anyone has a suggestion.

you have to create a new layer. so goto the layer with the image you wanna clone stamp, use alt and click. then stamp it down on the new layer. after that you can move it or do whatever, cause it's on another layer.

How many frames are most of the taggers around that make .gif animation avatars? Because whenever i have more than 5 frames, it's more than 20 kb. I even optimize it to save some kb, but it's still more than 20 kb. That really sux.
btw, this is the gif i'm tlaking about, now its 5 frames, but when i had it at 7, it was 44, but optimized it was 24, still too big. Now it's 20, but it doesn't look as good with the other 2 frames i originally had.
I'm using Gif movie gear, i don't know if different progs compress it more/less.
So do u guys keep ur frames around 5 or is there a way to compress it even further?
EDIT: n/m, i found out i can reduce colours and it loses 1 kb, making it good enough to fit srk standards with really crappy resolution...screw that

I have a couple of ?'s.
First, how do I make those "name banners" that fade from one end to the other?
Second where can I get some fonts?
Third, anyone know how to make Camoflage pattern using clouds, G blur, and adj. levels? I know the last one is pretty vague. I saw the tut on a website, but I can't find the page anymore.

Okay, in PS7, I've created a 200 x 70 pixel canvas, and I turned it into a really nice background. I go to image ready so I can upload and save a Ryo image for the background I have done in PS7. So I jump back to PS2, open the saved Ryo image, move it onto my background, but the image it minimizes itself like 200% when it's pasted on, and whenever I try to maximize it to normal size, it causes the background to get larger as well, so it's all screwy. I don't get this, someone please help.

I was wondering if someone could tell me how to make the "beams of light" effect that I've seen alot around here. Like in this tag by neroiscariot:

Those beams that are sort of shooting up on an angle are what I'm talking about.

probably because you had Ryo zoomed, but your background was not, when you saved it. actually you have to be more specific, i'm not really understanding what you're trying to say.

take the brush tool. then click on the airbrush icon. i guess starting with the opacity on 50-75% would be ok. then just brush streams of light. as for the little sparkles, just make the brush size smaller and dab little sparkles on.

first and foremost, if you want to do animation, you need Image Ready. you cannot do animation in Photoshop.

If you're talking about just a normal, 1 pixel border (Like in your current avatar), then that's simple. Create a new layer. Pick the pencil tool, set to 1 pixel, and choose the color you want for the border. Then, click on 1 corner and hold shift while dragging to the next corner (shift makes it a straight line). Just repeat this until you're done.

much faster than using the pen tool, IMO.
