University of Waterloo Thread

Waterloo isn't exactly a hotspot for games and people who go there go there for school, not to play games. But that doesn't man you can't drop by the Cove for some games during breaks in class.

If you are attending Waterloo come fall 03 term, post likely times you'll be at the cove and teach me how to play games properly.

good luck in finding people who are in waterloo and on srk too. i know that most of my friends who play have graduated or are going to graduate this term. there just aren't a whole lot of good players left anymore.

In september, the huge influx of fresh-out-of-high-school kids should bring in some new blood.

MikeC, were you in school Jan-Apr this year? Have we played? I saw that you finished 13th in MvC2 at T4. I didn't know there was anyone at UW that good :eek:

One of the first things I did after moving in when I was frosh, was head straight for Cove to check it out. I think this is a display of the high-school mentality that exists very early on before the work starts to pile up and the UW stress sets in.

To promote interest ... I think what might be a good idea, is to get ourselves and our friends to be there early on and before the onset of University thinking in the new kids. Get them competing and interested before they get lost in books. That way, they'll try and make time to come back even as school gets harder. Plus, tell them about SRK and this thread, so that they'll know when people will be there and not get turned off by no competition.

To do my part :D , I'll be at Cove a LOT starting September 1st.

I was at school Jan-Apr and am still here in the summer and will be here in the fall. I was learning from guys like Clayton, Fuzz and Ed but I didn't see any of them at T4 except for Ed who said he didn't enter because he doesn't want to get raped.

And no I am not good at all at games, in fact I suck really really badly. The only reason why I didn't finish last (13th is second to last) is because I drew Marvin in losers, who doesn't play MvC2 to my knowledge. Even then I had to get like massive coaching from the Sauga crew to do that....

Ed had the best Magneto at cove if I remember right... but that was when I was still in newbie status.

haha.. the indian guy.. is he tall and skinny and always wearing ball gear? He's the reason why I started playing again.. it was my Guile/Ken/Akuma vs his Iceman/Cable/Juggernaut (repetitive ice & viper beams with artic attacks and HVBs DHC into headcrush).. man it stings the ego to lose to that.

I was pretty low tier last term, but I'm on work term 2 minutes from downtown Funland arcade... so lot's of opportunity to practice. And the long trip to and from work make for lots of time to read everything there is to read on SRK.

I've gotta come up to loo to pick up my keys to my place for next term... I know you're in the middle of exams, but if you want / afford the time, maybe we can play for a bit?

Me fuzz and ed played against JS master at fuzz's house in TO and beat him and his boys MANY times. JS is good, but we had no idea WE were that good. :D We're probably gonna enter t5 as team loo! LOL... we'll bust out some calculus and differentiate random shit between matches or something.

oh yah, watch out for fuzz's IM.. it's insane now. he pulls out infinites out of nowhere.

we're gonna try and scam some money from the school and buy some japsticks for DC or something and have sessions at SLC or maybe even fuzz's house, if everyone can cram in there. heh.. either way, we'll figure something out.

I'll post details up... don't get your hopes up tho. chances are me and fuzz will be too busy playing to even bother.

I am definatly closing the gap with you guys. Fuzz's IM got me several times with infinite but i think I split the matches with him 4 games to 7 or something today.

I am not convinced about this JS crap. I've seen JS play at M2 and at T4 and I think he could woop you guys in tournament play anyday of the week. He is annoying as hell and talks shit but he backs it up when it counts. I'll believe it when I see it.

Whatever Yuhin, your spiderman rushdown worked on me when I was a noob. I still suck like hell, but by god, its not going to work on me anymore.

There is no way Marvel tournies will happen at the Cove, or any tournies for that matter. Marc has no authority with the cabinents other than doing button repairs. Only Simon or other Orbit techs who only comes like twice a week has authority to put it in event mode.

A total of 19 joined MvC2 singles at T4. 1 withdrew after the first match. I tied for 13th and two other tied for 18th.

As for the indian guy. Ya all he knows is Icebeam and jump back Cable. Nothing else. He thinks he is all that too. I also hate the fact that he has a major odour problem and stinks up the entire cove when he is there. Now he refuses to play me because I substituted capcom for Doom beta assist and can actually counter chip his Iceman to death.

I have exams on the 8th (tommorow from 2-5) and will be at the cove at noon until exam time. I also have exams on the 11th and will be at school all day from 12-5 and my last exam on the 13th. I will be around till the 16th which is orbit UN night, thats when I go back home to pick up the sauga crew.

Best bet is to let me know when you are comming up though. See you then.

Again though, I wanna emphasise how we should snare the young'uns really early on in their university lives. Get them into that downward spiral of marvel over math right from the get go. Let's recruit for the club during frosh week while they have no idea how fucked they are trying play and still pass.

Fuck, cyc has been kicked off my teams for a while now (start of spring term). I tried so hard to make him work but damnit, you need skill to use him since his assist doesn't have the raw damage like Capcom.

Maybe I'll try to work on him later. Right now, I am trying to find out how to be a cheap ass with Doom using as little effort as possible.

There are new mashers in town.... Some of the worst kind too. The entire cabinet fucking shakes OTG when this one asshole tries to play it. Indian guy (spiderman juggy now Ice Cable) also fucks up the cabinents occasionally when he can't win.

Fuzz's colossus is good, but not like overpowering or anything. He relies on you being stupid in thinking you can rush down scolossus or something because he is slow. Then WHAM, he pulls out high priority insane damage moves out of his ass.

His colossus got me the first game but I made him switch to real characters with Cable-Capcom.

cope? i was itchin for marvel the entire day. me fuzz and ed made up the downtime by playing 12 hours of marvel at fuzz's :D i think the win counters shot up to ~50-50 3 times last night. it was great. fuzz's IM is ridiculous now and ed's such a whore with storm... he runs away a lot better than mike :D

Today I sat down and OCV'd the first two guys I faced and then kept smiling to myself as about 10 guys stood around the machine too mesmorised to play :cool: and all while I had my girlfriend sitting on my lap (cause there wasn't a single empty chair to steal :bluu: she said to bring one for her next time.. or at least stop elbowing her in the stomach everytime I Hyper-Grav XX Magnetic Tempest :sweat: ).

It's so jokes watching all the chinamen so confused how a brown guy could own the machine in THEIR mall :D. This little kid was standing next to me and watching, so I let him push some buttons for me.. but when his terrified chinamom realised, she literally yanked him away and yelled something at him in mandarin, pointing at me. I'm sure something to the effect of "how many times have I told you not to go near those dirty brown people!" haha

Anyway, so the point of all this (other than that I am I really bored while I reformat and install shit on my laptop) is that I can be at Orbit in the afternoons.. at least for the next few days. This is almost always true. My Mags gets raped by Mike's random scrubby jumpback + frying pan + CapCom calls. Then my Cable comes in and does stupid stuff like fierce VBs over Sent's head. Actually, he's going to Guelph U now. So I think the problem of him coming to Cove straight from basketball at PAC all through summer has been alleviated.

He probably knows and just doesn't care. Cove isn't exactly a social hotbed... 75% of the people in there smell awful anyway.

if i remember correctly this is how clayton plays jitz. He does a center drag, and make a stupid sound while doing it to confuse the other team goalie. I use to be so good in jitz, now i can even pass the ball from the 5 man bar to the 3 man bar

Hey no problem. Yuhin's prediction was so true. Fucking winning everytime and I somehow get my ass killed. I think until I get more pratice with rushdown storm, I have to stick to runaway storm.

Sentinel against any of your characters was no problem, one and a half characters with Sent everytime but Storm was definatly not up to the task. Yo mike here's some steps for making your rushdown storm better:

1) go here -> http://www.drunkfish.com/bearcade/vids/index.html
2) Download Chapter 26 ~ Storm at the bottom of the page
3) Watch the vid at least 5 times to pick up storm resets
4) practice ALOT =p

EDIT: step 3B) Try to have your eyes catch up to wtf storm is doing in that vid..i sure as hell had a hard time following what's goign on!

You guys think Mike threw those games away... but I disagree. My teams are all Cable-based. Just because you're ahead when Cable comes in, doesn't mean you have the advantage. I usually EXPECT my Magneto to die very quickly, but just as long as he does so leaving Cable with lots of meter. That's probably something you guys noticed about all those matches... my Cable had MAD meter. Even with Scrub, I rarely HSF. That's why in my head, even if my Magneto/Sentinel gets perfected and it's now 3 vs 2... as long as Cable has 4 or 5 bars, I still consider myself in the 'lead', psychologically anyway. It's not really Storm's fault... she has to come down eventually, and unlike most Cables, I dont try to trap her when she does.. I rush that bitch down and cross her up. :evil:

This is very true. Anything doesn't make us target practice for Clayton's Magneto is "cheap". It's like the only way we're not gay is if we sit there and taunt while you practice your resets and infinites.

You guys have to understand that everywhere else, especially in tournaments, you're gonna see NOTHING BUT the most hardcore runaway and frantic 'keep Mags away' strats. If the runaway of MikeC and g3nn is getting your panties into knots and forcing you to bust out team Dirt... then you're absolutely fucked against people who are actually good at this game (and know how to beat faggot Blackheart).

You're right. People play to win in tourneys and if that's gonna be rushing that shit away, sure. I can understand that. Just don't come to me and say you got mad skills cuz you can super jump and press HP 10 times followed by lightning attack x3 but you don't even know what df+PP or ff does.

but anyways, I play for fun. So when someone like a brown haired fob *** is gonna runaway with storm all day long and waste my money then i'll show him what keepaway is all about. But that's not fun which is why (if you noticed) when i get bored of it, i don't use bh at all in team dirt. i let him get killed when he comes out and i try to see how long i can stay on with just sent+capcom.

bottom line is this is a video game. it's supposed to be fun. someone remind me when having fun was holding a stick still in one direction and hitting 1 button? if i wanted to do that i'd hold onto a tree outside slc and see how many times i can press on the # key on my cell. :D

1) I don't do that
2) I don't claim to have "mad skillz" (and I sure hope Mike doesn't either)
3) If my pansy Magneto can own that shit, then yours should have no problem
4) If my newbie Rowtron can beat that shit almost every time, then you have no excuse needing to use Blackheart to beat it

You do notice that Mike and I are getting better.. we're not just running all the time and we are starting to rush some shit down, and you do see some flashes of brilliance from time to time. All that will never ever happen if we're just bending over for your Magnetos to have reset practice on. Some times to avoid that one hit that ends up costing us the game, we have to run for our lives... or hope CapCom sends you back. You can't blame us for it - until we start acting like we're better than you because of it. I know I havent.. and I hope Mike doesnt, because that aint true either.

lol.. i was just griping in general about shit i see in tourneys. my post was just a big bitch fest about the stuff i don't like about marvel - directed at nobody in particular. but you can't say that mike's 2 hit combo doesn't own. i mean it's not impressive, but EVERYONE gets caught by it at least twice a game. it's hilarious when ed gets hit by it :D almost as good as the rocket punch reset.

when it comes to saying how far you two have gone in terms of skill, i'm the first one in line anytime to say that you guys have gotten worlds better. i still remember that first time mike rushed ed down and landed the storm combo... i went nuts on ed :D

and yes, that storm guy deserves dirt. If I could think of a dirtier team besides scrub (since my cable's lk lk hk xx superjump hp is godly), i'd use that on him. :D

I was talking to Danny about it, and it is a bit toned down, but you guys are doing a bunch of stuff that we never did...we did all the system calls like read, write and exec (and for the brave guys, execv), and we didn't really have to do thread yeilding and stuff (though we didn have to manage threads). I think fork was already implemented for us, but that was on the os side..you guys probrably need to do a syscall fork right?
