getting the super emeralds is a bitch:
-Im bad at the S&K special stages
-Im not very good at remembering where they are
-no reset trick
-no save game
-left left left, right right right, up up up, start, A button. level select, gets 'em every time.

super tails is so broken. sonic has that flash of death. knuckles....well, he can run and climb a little faster, meh.

Level select gets you all the emeralds? For reals? I did not know that.

Whoa, hold up, Knuckles get the emeralds and all he gets is a Gradius speed up? I was gonna try and get all the emeralds with him but now it doesn't sound worth it.

Wild Arms 5 is awesome. It took me a while to grow into the HEX system, but I think it's a kickass battle system. I also love that they let you rename skills and comboes now in addition to the spells.

^^How does hex sys work? Is it like a mini-srpg kind of deal?

Yes and no. It's very involved and unique ^^.

Basically, fight starts and it'll load up a random collection of hexes onto a flat background (usually a small number, like 7- sometimes there'll be barriers and stuff and weird formations like an 'L' or 'V') and distribute allies and enemies among the hexes. Turns come by speed. You have an FFX-style turn-bar to help you see who's coming next.

Hexes can hold any number of allies or enemies, but only one or the other. There cannot be an enemy on the same hex as one of your characters. The reason for this is because everything does not target allies/enemies, they target hexes. Anything that is on that hex takes the full brunt of the attack or heal. Likewise, buffs and elemental effects can only be applied to hexes. So the minute the char moves from a buffed hex, they lose the buff until they go back on it.

One really cool thing they do with it is how they handle elemental attack magic. There are no elemental spells, per se. You have two attack spell types: Blast, which spreads damage evenly on the hex and Crush, which spreads damage randomly. When you use these spells while the char is on an elemental hex, it turns into the appropriate elemental spell.

It's very tactical- much more tactical than normal turn-based fights and much faster than strategy RPG fights. Kind of like an in-between.

You shouldn't be trying to invent without some kind of guide. There should be a really good item invention applet out there (I lost the link), you WILL need that if you want to understand how the inventions work and the exact amounts you would need to look for to get specific items, plus the fact that some characters increase/decrease the prices making it even more confusing.

I'd say Xenosaga 1. But whatever you do, don't play Xenosaga 2. It's absolute trash and should never have been made to begin with. I've never played an RPG before where I hated each and every battle that I got into. It's possibly the worst turn-based battle system I've ever encountered. Xenosaga 1 is great. Just skip Xenosaga 2 and go straight to Xenosaga 3. There's an extensive reference guide in Xenosaga 3 so you won't be that lost.

I've been playing the shit out of Metal Slug 3 today, wow what a game!

Literally one of the top5 platformers I've ever played, and definitely the best of the slug games.

The military theme of the previous games got kinda dull, so to battle squids and lobsters and zombies, and riding an elephant, well it's just great. This is only the second game I've seen that features both elephants and zombies.

Learning curve is awesome too. Been playing it loads today and have finally mastered the first two levels. I love how at times it can seem like a puzzle game. Eg, on level 1, there are a load of hostages overhanging a river, and you ride a boat underneath. Bad guys come swinging in on vines from above.

If you start spraying too many bullets around, the hostages get released to soon and fall in the water. So the key is to face the other way and only shoot straight up when they are above the boat.

The second stage is even better, with the whole zombie dynamic going on. The easy option would have been to make the zombies shots kill you, but no: instead, they turn YOU into a zombie.

The easy option would be then to make this all-bad, but in fact being a zombie is quite useful! You have an amazing projectile-blood-vomit attack, and living foes can't actually harm you!

I mean, I actually don't chose to turn zombie now, it's not quite that good, but still, awesome feature. And then there's the way you can choose different routes.

The yeti cave is an awesome challenge, all about use of ammo and spacing strategy, and I've finally got it sorted.

Reminds me of many years ago, I had this game called Midnight Resistance on the ZX Spectrum. Metal Slug 3 is the game Midnight Resistance wanted to be.

Shit you gotta try this, people, trust me!

I've played the first one and bits of others (remember a bike chase in one of them), but 3 so far has been the best. Yeah, I kinda jacked the "definitely the best MS game" from a Gamefaqs review, but yes I also knew there were a lot of them.

Maybe you could contribute something more constructive rather than just mocking my enthusiasm.

Ok. I guess I could. 3 was really good. The ones that came after (4-6) are pretty good too and they pit you against military opponents. Plus the power ups are new too. 6 was the one I beat most recently. It has a Double Heavy Machine Gun powerup, a Monkey Transformation, and some tough as nails bosses. The monkey Powerup is as fun as the zombie and it's a pretty good game all in all.

3 is definitely a good one but I would say that the series plateaued with 3 and the rest are on about even ground. Go check em out.

Metal Slug? IMO..
2 >
1 = GBA MS = X >
3 = 5 = 6 = NGPC MS2 >
4 = NGPC MS1
haven't played 7 yet.

Really, I liked all of them except for the first Neogeo Pocket MS. That one is pretty doggone weak. 4 is probably when playmore went through learning how to make their own games again after the bankrupt and hiring tons of new staff. GBA MS is really good.

Which brings it to me cuz this IS a vent thread anyway, if they're gonna put in some 'new' mechanics into a series, especially when copying from someone else, they need to make it good. OK so MS copied lowdash from megaman series. Cool. But why TF can't I cancel it to a jump? Why is it so hard to shoot in low dash?

FFTA2 is still too fucking good.

The battles in Xenosaga 2 were the problem with the game. Every battle you have to charge for 2-3 turns for all of your characters. Then, once you're all charged up, have one person attack an enemy in just the right way that you break their defense. Then you have to boost another character so that you can keep attacking while the enemy is in a defense-broken state. And you just keep boosting until you're out of boost or the enemy is dead. This just led to pointlessly prolonged battles.

No offense at all, but what was so great about X4? Besides having a better story than all of the other Mega Man X games and all of those anime cutscenes I couldn't see anything interesting about it. Some random thoughts:

Lu Bu was not as beastly as I thought he would be.........while Honda, Keiji, Sun Ce, and Hanzo are awesome.
Guan Ping is THE KING......
Kunoichi defines broken in the game.
Ma Chao and Inahime are horrible.
Akechi Mitsuhide and Zhou Ti have the best R1's in the game
Orochi has the best Musou attack in the game.

And I didn't know Hanmaru Mori is a GUY..........

I've been playing the living hell out of Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1) AGAIN (this is my third nearly full playthrough). It's still great and all, but it seems to be losing its touch. It becomes WAY too easy later on; mind you, I am only using Ramza+4 Generic Females. Then again, I am glitch abusing to hell and back in this one (weapon duplication glitch AND page down glitch ftw). I chose to skip stealing Elmdor's gear this time because the difficulty obtaining it far outweighs the reward IMO (yes, the gear's good, but you don't really need it unless you want to get everything). I don't know if I should try to get Cloud this time because not only have I done it before, he's not that great unless you power level him and give him Short Charge. I'm gonna try and put it down for a while because I've been playing way too much (in less than a week, I went from the beginning of the game to nearly the end of Chapter 4).

I've only played FFT on PSP. I learned of that free jp trick, boy was I disappointed to see that the trick's only for PS1. Do those glitches cut playtime? I want to get PS1 tactics and play that game just for the stuff I missed out on(battle cries etc). oh and yeah Cloud is a total pushover compared to any other guest characters. Even Agrias, a fairly low tier guest character, would own Cloud.

I've been playing alot of older games lately:

Fear Effect - I had never played this game before, but I know it stirred up a lot of interested when it was first released. I'm enjoying it so far, not mcuh else to say.

Mega Man X2 - Nothing too much to say about it. I still really enjoy it, even to this day.

Mega Man X4 - My Second game purchased when I first got my Playstation way back in the day. I loved this game to death; it was a new beginning for me Mega Man-wise.

Mega Man X6 - I'm torn about this game. I know the difficulty is just stupid, and some of the game mechanics are really flawed, but something compells me to play this game. I must say, it was a refreshing take on the X series, and I really enjoy it, flaws and all. Easily one of the most frustrating games I have played. I don't know who at Sony decided that Jump=Dash, but I hope someone got slapped for it.

Star Ocean: The Second Story - SO3 was my first Star Ocean, and I really got into it, a little less after the ridiculous plot twist, but I enjoyed it none the less. I'm really enjoy the old school RPG elements, inclduing the free roaming, challenging difficulty, and pixelated graphics. A little too much dialogue, for my liking.

Alundra - What can I say? It's Alundra. yet another one of the games I first bought when I got my PSX. Easily one of the most mentally challengin and stimulating games I have evr played. A true, unknown gem. Although, I know some SRKers are aware of it greatness.

I have put Tactics Advance 2 on the shelf for a bit. I've played it a lot in the last three weeks, and I need a break.

I'll be going home to Canada in a little under 4 weeks, and I can't fucking wait to have my PS2 back with it's delicious library.

I think I'm gonna relax with Warriors Orochi.

I finally got all the characters unlocked...........Goemon being the hardest one for me to get. I like the game and look forward to the Sequel.

I fucking loved Warriors Orochi. I just pre-ordered part 2 the other day. Its coming out in a month or two. I can't wait.

I just can't stop playing Final Fantasy Tactics. I've nearly optimized all of the special characters (yes, I have a decent Cloud that can mess things up); basically, their main job is mastered and they have decent S-abilities (only Reis needs a 2nd A-ability IMO, everyone else does just fine with their normal A-ability). Cloud does A LOT of damage at higher levels and with the right gear (more than even Orlandu), but he needs Beowulf in order to be truly effective. He's like the Nino (FE7) of this game: Starts off very weak, but if you put the time and effort into leveling him up, he becomes a beast.

I've been playing War of the Lions on PSP. Any recommendations on how I should set up my party? I know there are some huge differences (like I'm working two of my characters towards dark knights) but still, alot of the PSX advice is applicable. I'm just about to get Cloud.

Been playing a lot of stuff so this post will be longer than most.

MegaMari. Fan-made Mega Man game and a really good one. Game is sooooo much more doable on a control pad. I picked up a Logitech Dual Action last night and I love the thing. It plays in the style of Mega Man 2. There's no slide or Mega Buster.

RosenKreuz Stilette. Another Mega Man clone but you can slide and you get the charge shot. Two playable characters with even better looking visuals than MegaMari and a dope soundtrack. Game is also really freaking hard. My keyboard was the death of me in the past but now I can get through some of the tougher spots thans to my Dual Action control. Bosses do not screw around in this game. Got to the boss of the water stage and got owned.

Hard Hat. Another fan made Mega Man game where you play as a lovable Met. Killed Spark Man and Needle Man. Wanted to throw something at my screen after screwing up in Heat Man & Napalm Man's levels. The level designs here are a very Mega Man 1-2 ish.

Mega Man & Bass. Wow this game so a million times better with SNES quality sound. And why did Proto Man have to look like a scrub in the intro stage? Yeah, King in strong, but come on! The dude with the shades deserves better than that. I killed Cold Man with no real problems. Astro Man's stage is one I can't believe I actually did on the GBA. The appearing/disappearing platforms are murder in some parts! The cool, laid back tune that plays in the background belies the true nature of Astro Man's level.

Mega Man ZX Advent. The level where you jump from trees on whirlwinds was nuts. Boss was cake, though. Is Ashley's story pretty much the same as Grey's?

Gokujou Parodius. Man, this game is fun. Can't believe it never came to the states. The sheer weirdness alone is awesome. You get to play as a ton of different Konami characters each with their own play styles. Vic Viper, Gomen, TwinBee, and some others I don't even know. Its like Gradius on one huge acid trip.

Don't bother working too hard on the generics. You'll probably want to incorporate the special classes (Cloud, Beowulf, Agrias, Orlandu - the latter 2 especially) into your party once you get them.

It's not possible to get Dark Knight before CH4 without grinding. I consider it more or less a bonus class. IMO the useful regular skills of FFT PSP are
Geomacy(100% accuracy, comes in handy vs knights and bosses)
First Strike(monk skill)
Steal, Steal Heart, poach(thief)
dual wield, throw+flail(ninja)
autopotion, throw item(chemist)
Iado(samurai)
Teleport(time mage)
Bards(speedup and powerup), Dancer(forbidden dance)

I guess math skills are great if you have mages. It takes forever to set up a good arithematician.

Entice(orator) was decent, not great but if it worked I'd get all their hard to steal equipments and kick them out of the party heh heh.

My ramza had blood sword, geomacy, 2-hand, first strike, and safeguard. This dude seriously fucked up all knights w/o crush helm or crush armor skills(I don't really know how to get around those yet).

Geomancy is pretty weak. Stealing is alright if you don't grind (e.g. you want to pick up equips from story battles if you're really cheap).

I think I learned these (important) abilities in this order:

Gained JP Up
Accumulate (grinding)
Move+1
Chakra
Counter
Revive (optional but excellent if you keep Monks around)
Move+2
Blade Grasp
Jump (all)
Praise (raise Brave permanently)
MP Switch/Move MP Up (pseudo-immortality if you get enough turns)
Move+3/Calc+all Math (depends on character focus)

I don't know, but i think its a great game. If you like any of the Final Fantasy's, I think you'll like it. The battle system is great, learning the skills and abilities is cool as hell and you can totally deck out your immortals. Its got great story and sound/music, the characters have strong personalities and you really get into them. The dreams are ridiculously intense, although can be a pain to read since they're long as hell.

I give the game a 9/10. Its one of those games that you just don't want to end.

Yeah I like to play without grinding if possible, that's just my style. Shirahadori iirc steals enemy weapon right? It's good against bows, but honestly I found First Strike a lot more effective to have because archers are easy to kill, esp with dancers. The reason I like geomancy is because it's such a cheap ability to learn, and I hate enemies with high block rate, hence geomancy and iado. Geomancers have pretty good growth too, they don't gain speed but that's not hard to remedy.

Shirahadori (PSP name for Blade Grasp, I suppose) blocks most physical-type attacks that can be avoided, even arrows. The success rate is (100% - Brave).

As for high block rate, I switched in characters with attacks that couldn't be blocked. Agrias, Beowulf, Orlandu, etc.

Shirahadori was fucking broken.

Seriously, it was a 1% chance of hitting with any physical attack if you had max Bravery. And Ramza can spam his Bravery increasing ability to make everyone with Shirahadori have 97 base Bravery. One buff in battle then = 100 Bravery, which = you aren't getting hit by anything that isn't magic or a Sword Tech.

O, getting shot at from 1/2-way across the battlefield? Nuh-uh. *hand wave, arrows fall to the ground*

It's like putting fucking Daigo in the damn game

Of course, it's not as fun when you're trying to steal Elmdor's gear before you kill him (and your debuffers just got owned)

That's some crazy strong boss. That you playin?

Recently got Elonoa, an indy RPG that was 4chan /v/ fad a bit ago. The dudes who made this RPG Maker game put a ton of work into it, it shows. I'm probably not gonna beat it cuz lol RPG Maker, but damn.

For other Korean nerds in Western countries besides me, check out the Shin Megamr Tensei 1 fan kr translation (http://cafe.daum.net/megaten). They removed the color clone monsters and put in Korean monsters/ghosts in their place and made new events. I'm amazed how much work they put in.

Apparently you can't steal Elmdor's gear in the PSP version. So in that version, you're better off killing him ASAP and finishing that battle.

Been grinding in Namco x Capcom the past two weeks. It's already taken a good 40 hours of my life. I just find it funny how the original characters (Reiji and Xiaomu/Shaomu) are not as good as the others. I mean KOS-MOS, rightfully so, is like the S+++ Tier Unit in the game. Her damage output from the start is ridiculous.

Even though I've been playing the Japanese version there is a beta English patch out there. Although, I'm not sure how widely available that patched game is. Nevertheless, the game is an absolute blast. I just love seeing all these familiar faces. Even though the story is pretty hackneyed to get all the characters from different game universes together, it's just fun to hear all the classic songs and do foolish combos with your favorite moves in strategy-RPG fashion.

Still grinding on FFT: War of the Lions. Going crazy trying to get a good onion knight. I have no one to play Ad-Hoc with though. Kinda pisses me off.

otherwise, I've been achievement whoring the Orange Box. Cleared one of the test chambers (15 I think.) In 3 seconds. I feel good, but those "least steps" challenges are killer. I forgot how to beat Andross. You're supposed to shoot at his mouth when he tries sucking you in, right?

On the N64 version or what? You shoot his eyes and hands. When he vacuums you in, fire a smart bomb into his mouth. If you're at the real Andross, then you need to shoot the lower, back quarter of his brain during phase two.

Then you need to escape.

I know how to beat the rest of it, I just forgot what to do when he opens his mouth.

Ah hahaha. Haha. Ha. Ha.

I hear godly things about the PS1 FFT. FFTA, the first one, not so much. I bought it, but haven't played the game yet. I've never understood the amount of hate that game gets.

Anyway, I'm playing Super Smash Flash. It's a flash game I just downloaded this afternoon. Its a lot like Super Smash Bros. Melee but there are a lot of glitches. Still a fun game, though. I'm unlocking all the characters. Just unlocked Inuyasha. http://gamingrockson.blogspot.com/2008/08/super-smash-flash.html

DoReMi Fantasy. I'm on the fourth world now. I actually died twice on a the magician boss. I so need MP3s of this game's music.

Played some Final Fight 2 last night. I know it was never as popular as the first FF but I still like the game. It introduced Maki.

I found this hack (it's called Super Mario Forever), and loaded it up. I will say this. The video does not do justice in showing off the sadistic nature of this game. You must play this to truly understand the feeling that game hackers are spiteful people, and that they hate you.

WOW. You ain't lying. I laughed a lot but I can imagine how truly aggravating that game must be. I was actually thinking of making a freeware/fan game/hackers thread. But I'm not sure what the interest level of these kinds of games is at SRK.

ThePurpleBunny

I think there's a thread for hacks somewhere. Don't feel like searching for it though.

I finished this shit (although I had to use savestates to do it), and thankfully there's only 4 levels (1-1 to 1-4). 1-3 has nothing in it, so it's a freebie to the pain in the ass that is 1-4.

You've seen I Want To Be The Guy? That game is madness. I'm up for some freeware games though.

Currently playing:
-Marvel vs Capcom 1
-KOF 98
-Darkstalkers 3
-Xenogears.

As soon as I figure out the config problems I'll be playing PSX FFT.

I don't wanna be the fucking guy anymore.

I don't even wanna be the wuss.

On topic: Playing ZOE2 for the first time. Game is fun but I hate how close the camera is to the action sometimes. I was having serious problems in the Viola 3 fight because the camera kept spinning wildly.

I had an odd experience with ZOE2. In the battle vs Anubis I was beating his ass bad. He had about 25% life left and I had nearly a full bar.

I lost. Repeatedly. I beat Anubis down to 25% life several times and yet I lost? I wondered how the hell did that happen? There's something wierd in that game that screw you over for being good ta it. All of a sudden i was getting hit, couldn't evade shit, taking a lot of damage. After that I never played ZOE2 again. That was some bullshit. Me getting screwed over like that? Jehuty was perfect, my controls perfect, response perfect all up to that final fight. Sometimes I really hate Japan.

The new video game crack comes in the form of single screen stages with loads of options. Some of you may have already played it but I just discovered the awesomeness that is Super Mario War last night. This is a home brew game and an unbelievably great one.

FFTA2 and SC4.

I've been playing FFTA2 more since it's on the go. Today I was pissed that I got all the way towards the end of a mision only to lose. I critical hit a monster with target area in effect, and since it counted as 2 panels I was penalized the entire mission. Since I have no control over when critical hits will happen it's kinda a cheap ass law that makes no sense. I still like this game though, just some laws are frustrating. More than even 1 if you ask me...

oh tell me about it, the laws can really fuck you up sometimes. fire was restricted and those snake chicks charmed my black mage and while he wasnt under my control he cast a fire attack.
another time attacking from behind wasnt allowed, my thief is charmed by one of those damn rabbit things and hits one of my teammates from behind. yeah, awesome.
the no-miss law sucks too.

how do you typically go about battles? send in the max number of clan members or limit the numbers for quicker leveling up? Ive done about 20 quests so far and my team is only at around level 12. Im never sure if Im playing smart or not.

I usually send in six, or whatever max units can be used are. Since characters grow even if they don't battle I use whatever they let me allow. One time I had to send in 1 moggle by himself because the law restricted everything else but moggle actions.

I know what you mean by that stupid charm crap. I failed missions over it also, my own black mage got cpu controlled and casted fire with target area in place. My Fencer missed with "missing" law in effect, with 99% ACC! Couldn't believe that one...

Yeah, all my gaming time has been dedicated to this game since I started playing. I've only played with bots but even on the moderate difficulty setting, they provide a pretty good challenge.

that mario war game looks fun as all hell, maybe we should try to get a little srk group going or something? maybe some weekend or night games?

Sounds good to me. Game is worthy of its own thread.

I haven't dug too much further into the game but I think they are trying to get net play going as the go al
