Well, sort of. I'm lazy and I always lose interest in keeping threads going eventually, plus I've already been here for almost a week so this is gonna be more of a log of random thoughts and observations... not even in chronological order.
The scene at More:
Too crazy for words. Especially now that SBO is coming up, the arcade is just totally packed with random foos playing CvS2. People from out of town are coming in to Tokyo early to get their practice on, and the majority are getting tossed around by the Tokyo elite.
The crazy thing is, there is no single dominant player. There's like 10-12 dudes all roughly equal with each other, all vying for the top spot. The only people that actually get streaks at More are Dan (C-Ryu/Ken/Sagat) and Iyo (C-Dhalsim/Maki/Rolento). Bas and the newest dominator Captain Sawada (A-Sakura/Bison/Blanka) would probably get streaks also, but they're always playing each other and getting their streaks killed.
If you're into CvS2 (all three of you guys), More is like some kinda magical nirvana. Hold up, take that back. Aside from all the shaggy hair, dudes wearing the same clothes every day, cigarrette smoke so thick you can draw pictures in it, and mad shoulderfucking going on because the place is so full of dudes, More is a dope place. On three head to head cabinets, you'll often see a combination of Bas/Sawada/Ohnuki/Makoto/Iyo/Otaku or whatever all playing each other, and you don't know which match you want to watch. And after one of those 6 dudes loses, another buff ass player will step up and start playing. The casual play at More is actually more fun to watch than most any tournament, since all the filler of random scrubs is removed (for the most part) and you have mostly dope ass players you've already heard about and WANT to watch playing.
Even though More is mostly specialized in CvS2, the scenes for pretty much every popular 2D game (and even some unpopular ones) is really strong. For some reason, GGXX #r is the female gamer's game of choice. Lots of random hoes (most of which are very ehh looking... but they dress nice!) are playing that game, and yes, they all use female characters. Usually in a pink color if available. Some girl who was actually semi hot except for a crazy grill had like a 15 win streak with Dizzy. I'm totally far behind in GGXX, but the stuff she was doing looked pretty tight: knockdown in the corner, send out the blue jaws thingie, a spike, a bubble all hella fast, then do some crazy low airdash towards the opponent and so some weird ass mix up that I can't even tell what it is. It was working, whatever it was. I played one game of ggxx and it literally lasted like 15 seconds. People were laughing at me. =( I hate Eddie.
Since SBO is coming soon, the Vampire Savior scene is pretty strong too (cue B-IzM creaming his pants here). I played Ino, got rocked, then played Chikyuu (whom I've never even seen at More before) and was actually doing really well. I was about to beat him with a full bar of life left, then he somehow hit me with the EX air fireball and turned me into a bat. From there he just chopped me death. Don't ask, I have no idea. I played him again and he almost perfected me. Anakaris is seriously impossible to block.
Super Turbo and Hyper Street Fighter are there also, with a modest amount of players playing both. The release of Hyper Street Fighter seems to have sparked a very mild surge of interest in ST around Japan, as the game does seem to get a decent amount of play in some arcades. I played once against CE Bison, was about to win, then I made the mistake of blocking a psycho crusher. It crosses me up halfway through and I get knocked down. He then does an early psycho crusher to cross me up again and knock me down, then a NOT cross up psycho crusher just to piss me off and kill me. Asshole.
KOF2002/2003 have pretty strong followings at More also. Say what you want about 2003 being a Duo Lon-fest (which it is), but at least the stuff he does looks interesting and fun. I saw like 50 different set ups after a connected rekka series and like 20 weird ways to set up the grab. Random snapout moves seemed to rule the day though.
Samurai Spirits Zero Special I didn't get to watch much. Kusarefhjklsdhfjka (the big ass monster looking thing) seems to be a really popular character though.
Oh, and if Street Fighter doesn't get you the hoes, shooting games will. There was this one dude playing some random shooter and was on some superplay shit. Then some random HOT ASS girl walks up and starts watching with this =* look on her face. She stands there and watches him for a long ass time, then when he finally dies she takes off. He prolly coulda hit it if he had beat the game. Loser.
More later.

Hey Campbell, who do you use in Vampire Savior?
And I assume the place was more packed than usual because of SBO. Do you know, by any chance, who the regular top players are at MORE?

New Game Impressions:
Rumblefish:
After 5 or 6 games, my impression is that this game is very, very blah. It looks kinda nice what with the cel shading and smooth animation yadayadayada, but everything else about the game seemed pretty subpar to me. The roster is pretty small at 10-12 characters (2 of which are palette swaps), and most of the designs are pretty bland... save for the obligatory Ninja-Looking-Badass type character.
The game plays pretty slow all around. Moves execute slowly, jumps are floaty, just kinda sluggish all around. Despite the slow pace, the game doesn't seem to have anything resembling a defense game. There are no invincible reversal-type moves (at least not with the characters I tried), anti-airs are iffy at best, and every light punch/kick seems to give a humongous frame advantage. The game seems to boil down to dash jab jab, dash jab jab, dash jab jab OH SHIT ONE HIT chain combo chain combo combo combo combo combo. To make it even worse, since defensive measures are seemingly non-existent there doesn't seem to be a whole lot you can do about the repeat dashing jabs save for mash your own jab and hope you win (you usually don't) or mash the roll button. Yes, there's a roll button. If neither of those are working and you don't have meter, you simply just wait and hope your opponent pushes himself far enough out for you to move, and if he doesn't you just get guard broken. Maybe me and the other players on the machine are missing something really important about the game, I dunno.
The meters are kind of a bastardized version of GGXX: I probably don't understand it completely, but there's an Offense Meter that fills up when you attack. It lets you do supers when full, and what appear to be Roman Cancels (normal moves only, apparently) for like half bar.
There's a Defense Meter which I guess fills up as you block/get hit, and when that's full you can perform something like a burst. The difference is, instead of hitting two buttons to burst, you have to do some complicated super motion AND have to have some sort of requirement fulfilled. For example, some characters can only burst when getting hit by kicks (or not. I kinda can't remember) or when knocked down, etc. So let's say some guy is comboing you. Your character needs to get hit by a kick to burst. Not only is the timing pretty strict to burst, it also requires a complicated motion (usually along the lines of a f,hcf+p or something) AND a full defense bar. So basically whenever somebody's pressuring/hitting you you try to mash out a burst... and it generally doesn't happen. Oh yeah I forgot, defense burst thingies are kinda like supers and do damage, unlike GGXX bursts.
The moves, special moves, and supers all are all pretty blah. I didn't really see anything new or original. In fact, almost every special move/super I saw was just a bastardized version of another existing move in past fighters.
Well, I hope I'm wrong about this game and that it magically turns out to be some dope game, but things aren't looking too hot right now. It seems to be a total bomb in Japan also, as hardly any people are playing it, at most arcades aren't even carrying it.
Guilty Gear Isuka:
Did I say Rumblefish bombed here? I take that back. GGXX Isuka DEFINES the term. Less arcades have this game than SvC. SvC. I haven't even played the game yet, so I can't pass a fair judgement, but I can see why the game tanked so bad. I saw two guys playing the computer (incidentally, these were the only two guys I ever saw playing the game) and this is my impression:
Take A3's dramatic battle mode. Good, silly fun right? Now, add in that teammates can hit each other. Let that seep in for a second. I am Faust. I toss up a meteor. EVERYBODY ON THE SCREEN JUST DIED. Here's how a usual match played out:
I. Player A is fighting Player C (on team 2). Player B (team 1) doesn't want to hit his partner, so he just kinda hangs way out in the back where he can't do any harm and builds meter.
II. After about 15 seconds pass, Player B gets bored of doing nothing and runs in and spazzes away, beating up both his partner and his opponent.
III. Player A wants to escape Player B's pent up fury and hides in a corner and builds meter where he can't hurt anybody.
IV. Player A gets tired of waiting and.... you get the picture.
Add in the stupid button required to turn around (a switch target button would have been much more sensible), and you have the recipe for an instant financial failure. Again, I didn't even play the game, so take these impressions with a few liberal dashes of salt. However, I definitely cannot see this game becoming a serious competitive game ever.
Virtua Fighter 4: Final Tuned
By request, I went to Shibuya to check this game out. I'm just a casual VF player, so I'm not as sensitive to the differences that a more hardcore player would notice right off. Anyways:
No new characters. According to a big chart on the wall, every character got exactly 5 new moves (maybe it wasn't listing all of them), a few modified old ones, and a "change technique". I have no idea what that does, but it's usually performed with a single direction and a button, such as 6P or whatever. Backgrounds retouched, but other than that general engine seems to be unchanged. I still have no idea about the change technique thingie though.
Casual VF player that I am, the main thing I was interested in were the new outfits/hairstyles/accessories kinda stuff. Hmm, that makes me sounds kinda homo. Oh well. Anyway, since the game hasn't been loke testing for very long people haven't unlocked anything crazy yet... which causes me to think that Sega released this as a whole new version of VF4 rather than call it VF4 evo version D or whatever, simply to force everybody to buy more VF cards.
Anyway, here's some of the new moves I saw:
Brad seems buffer all around. I can't say for sure since I don't know more than what the PS2 training mode tells me about Brad, but I noticed he has a lot of counter hit combos that give a crumple stun or beatdown animation, which allow him to do some pretty hefty combos. I did notice he has a new low kick from his back sway (did he even have a back sway before?) that causes crumple stun on counter hit. He also has a new right hook punch which lunges pretty far forward and hits low.
Akira has some really ugly and goofy looking new moves. I can't really tell what they're supposed to be used for since they're pretty slow, but I'm going to guess they have auto-sabaki properties or something. One move looks like Xiaoyu's d+1, and another has him flapping his arms around before doing an elbow which causes gut collapse.
Pai 1K+G was modified so that it knocks down without counter hit I think. She also has a jumping low punch which looks a lot like her 3P, except she hops forward and does it. She doesn't seem to be able to continue the punch string after it. She has a new elbow from back turned position. If it hits, she can combo a cool looking throw where she kicks the dude in the head over her shoulder with her back still turned to him. She also has a goofy looking jumping crescent kick that puts her in backturn.
Jacky has a new string starting with a front leg roundhouse that looks like it hits mid. He also has a new jumping double kick similar to Akira/Leon that seems to be his new combo ender now. Also seems to have new options out of his special backstep thingie.
Uhh, that's all I noticed since those were the only characters being used. There was a Kage guy who didn't use any of the new moves, and I never noticed any of those change techniques.
Samurai Spirits Zero Special:
Still haven't had a chance to sit down and mess with this yet. Maybe later.
wait a second people already qualified for team usa for cvs2 for sbo???
anyway...sounds dope...
maybe you can post some new stuff you seeing in cvs2 or something...

Intro to Japanese CvS2 players 101a:
Densetsu No Otaku:
Also just "Otaku" and now "OTK" for short (since Japanese players love 3 letter names for whatever reason), Otaku is considered to be the best K-Groove player in the Tokyo area (even though Ino lives in Tokyo now, he's still considered an Osaka player apparently).
The epitome of the Japanese pretty boy, Otaku has looks and dresses the part. He's the kinda guy that can wear sunglasses indoors at nighttime and somehow make it work. The problem is, he doesn't like girls. Well, not real ones anyway. He's into females of the anime type. Otaku indeed. When I first started chatting with him on MSN messenger, he gave me a link to some pic and wrote "MY WIFE". So I check the link expecting to see some hot Japanese chick and instead I'm greeted by some totally generic looking anime girl. Turns out she's from some dating sim game that he really likes, and even named his email addy after it.
As if that weren't distinguishing enough, he also makes video games for a living. More specifically, porn games. Even MORE specifically, anime porn games. He's kinda embarrassed to admit it though (he calls them "pure love stories"), and it also results in him getting made fun of. A lot. In fact, the first day we got here we all went drinking with him and a bunch of other CvS2 players, and they all ragged on him pretty much for the whole night about random things: his chosen profession, how he gets faded off of one drink, his crazy poses when doing a super (more on that later)... they were even calling him "garbage" for chrissakes. I felt pretty bad for him, but he seemed to be used it and was even having a good time despite all of it. Our team name for the 5 on 5 was originally going to be "Team Otaku Makes Random Lolicon Style (lolicon = lolita = underage chicks) Porno Games" but I guess somebody decided that would be too mean so we just went with Team BIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH.
Despite all that (or perhaps BECAUSE of all that), Otaku is the coolest guy on the planet. TOTALLY nice, really polite and easygoing. He even picked us up from the airport and accompanied us to Shinjuku even though we didn't even really need it.
Put this guy in front of a CvS2 cabinet however, and everything changes. Otaku just becomes a certified beast when he plays. With his team of K-Kyo/Rock/Hibiki, he just runs through people like nothing for the most part. He has EASILY the best Just Defend ability I have ever seen. His Kyo is top 2 in the world along with Makoto's, his Hibiki is dope as well, but it's his Rock that really steals the show. Easily his best character IMO, he makes Rock look like he's straight up overpowered. Because of Otaku, K-Rock is ranked very highly in Japan, and there are a surprising number of K-Rock players to be found here. Specifics on Rock usage later. Oh yeah, he's got an incredibly mean K-Nakoruru also.
Status on coming to Evolution: Maybe (that means "no" in Japanese)
Captain Sawada:
Japan's newest CvS2 dominator. Sawada got 3rd in the first national CvS2 tournament more than 2 years ago, then virtually disappeared off the CvS2 map until a few months ago. Now? I think it's pretty safe to say he's top 5 in the country.
Sporting A-Sakura/Bison/Blanka, Sawada differentiates himself from the rest of the Team Bas players (called "A Yare" in Japan. Don't ask me why) by being incredibly aggressive. This guy will throw you all over the place, make you block a ton of crap, then throw you some more. He's incredibly good at making you fidget and press buttons, and knowing when you'll do it; after getting thrown a million times and/or having a flashing guard bar, he'll then walk up to you and get a counter hit Sakura fierce into strong fireball. Or even worse yet, walk all the way up to you from like half screen and CC as you try to break his throw.
Aside from his smart aggressive play, he's also arguably the best technician around. He does all the stuff dismissed as too hard/risky/random to do in real matches, such as Bison RC short scissor kicks (more on this cheap ass move later), whiff low short into RC elec as anti-air for Blanka, more difficult CCs that do a bit more damage, and so on. He's probably tied with Bas as the best A Yare player in Japan right now, and that's saying a lot.
Outside of CvS2, Sawada seems to be a pretty introverted guy, despite his dope screen name (Sawada is his real name). Everybody encourages him to talk shit whenever he beats Bas but he won't ever do it. Either too nice or too shy I guess. I don't really talk to him much, but he's nice to me so he's cool in my book.
Status on coming to Evolution: too broke to go

Quickie today. My (and the 3s team's) SBO match is tomorrow.
SBO 2004 day 1:
The hall SBO is being held in this year is a lot less regal looking than last year's. From the outside, it looks like it's a Dave n Busters or something. The inside where the actual event is being held is quite a bit smaller than last year's, but the maximum capacity is about same due to stadium seating and 2 floors to watch from. I came just in time for opening ceremonies, which really wasn't a whole lot. A lot of guys speaking Japanese, a small speech from last year's KOF2002 champion, and some music and a little video demo that was almost exactly the same as last year's (same music even).
Anyway, KOF2003 starts, and it's pretty much what everybody expected: Duo Lon fest, lots of random snap outs (which oftened determined the outcome of entire games), and lots of time out wins. Korea was a no show (apparently last year Eolith paid their way), so there wasn't really any drama or anything either. Saw a funny combo though:
Combo into Duo Lon rekkas (palm ender) link snap back to Iori, Iori comes in and does immediate pillar super, runs and pushes opponent all the way to the corner, command grab, snap Duo Lon back in, then go for back-turned infinite.
Vampire Savior starts after, and upsets abound everywhere. It's kind of a randomish game though, so it's kind of expected if that makes any sense. First I was rooting for Ohnuki (who won the last chance tourney that day), but he lost first round to Sako, a top seeded Bulleta who ended up getting tied for 3rd. Then after he lost I was rooting for Chikyuu, but then he lost 2nd round. Anyway, it was a fun tournament to watch, and some matches were over in like 10 seconds. Haitani wins with Sasquatch, T2ya (pronounced "tetsuya") gets 2nd with Zabel.
VF4 starts after that, and the only team I have to root for is the Ohnuki/Chibita/Ohsu Akira team. In the second round their whole team got beat by a Kage player named Jin, who ended up winning the entire tournament by himself. His teammates never even had to touch the joystick.
Anyway, I know how everybody loves their tier lists, so here's Arcadia's tier lists for every game in SBO (listed in this year's SBO pamphlet):
Take these with a grain of salt. I know for one the CvS2 list is off and most top players don't agree with it. Oh yea, discuss these in another thread. Not here.

Oh yeah, wish us luck. Our CvS2 match is in about 10 hours, and we got the best bracket ever. In our 4 team bracket:
Ino/Nuki/Tokido
Bas/Otaku/Makoto
Remio/Komemaru/Kojima
ME AND KIM
You prolly haven't heard of the third team, but they're another really buff Tokyo team. They're the ones that won the very last CvS2 qualifying tournament, which was also held in Tokyo. They had to beat TONS of teams to get the last spot.
The US 3s team has better luck. Their 4 man bracket is basically a bunch of no-names.

Why would Otaku's and Ino's teams be in the same bracket group? Both of those players qualified for the top 16 last year, so I would assume they get put on opposite sides of the brackets. I hope they didn't just draw names by random when they made up the brackets...

Besides, using singles tourney results to seed a team tourney isn't an obvious idea.
Why the hell do people bother playing in qualifying tournaments if they cant make it to SBO?

Do you mean OCV, or do you mean "sweep" (as in not a one CHARACTER victory for all his matches)? There's a difference you know.

I don't know the actual specifics as to why our team for #reload didn't go, but ID told me no one wanted to go, and since the rule stated that if the top 3 can't go, then there's no team for US. The reason why our CvS2 team only had 2 people, since Ricky didn't go, we had a handicapped team.

Dude, you should know that if you say OCV around here, tons of scrubs will start saying "whatever character Mago used first is the best character in the game because he won the finals of the SBO team tournament with only that character." There's a whole lot of difference between a person's TEAM winning 3 in a row and the first CHARACTER on that person's team winning 3 in a row. There's a reason there's a C in OCV... and it doesn't mean TEAM.
great log buk.. i always read your threads.. tons of information and funny too. ^^
regarding 'yare'.. i don't know wtf that means, but i think it's analogous to 'top tier''
koreans use almost all the terms japanese use in cvs2 (such as Oricom aka original combo for cc), and they use 'are' for top tiers of the grooves instead 'f 'yare'
anyways.
a-'yare' = a-sakura/bison/blanka
k-'yare' = k-blanka/cammy/sagat
no other grooves have 'yare's. ^^
regarding mago.. they fucking beasted beating team final (tokido/ino/ohnuki) in the semis..
mago beats tokido
ino beats mago
kindebu beats both ino and ohnuki.
sawada doesn't get to play. ^^
god damn a-yare beating down k-yare. :'(
i wanted ino to beat them all.
anyways, i guess mago really beat all 3 of the 2nd place finisher.. it's a team of all a-groovers.

Maybe this has something to do with it:
やれやれ (yare yare)
(int) exclamation of relief or disappointment, (P)
I'm guessing along the lines of "more of the same." I dunno, anyone know the real reason?

Well, Capcom day at SBO is over and I've decided I'm not going to GGXX/T4/SS0 day.
Oh yeah, my mistake. It's A/K Are, not Yare. Not pronounced ARRR, but AW RAY (and japanize the R sound).
SBO CvS2:
Iyo's team unfortunately play's Sawada's team first round. I dunno the score because we were playing at the time, but Sawada's team wins. Ino's team versus Bas' team also happened while we were playing, and Ohnuki totally destroyed both Makoto and Otaku with mostly Akuma (I was watching a little between rounds). Against Bas his Sagat pulled in some extra work and swept the team.
As for team US, we played Janken with Remio's team before the game. Winner gets to either pick sides or see the other team's first player and counter. I win the Janken game (japanese Janken is weird, so I throw out my scissors like a full 2 seconds after he throws out his paper), and since we only have two people on the team we decide it would be more prudent to counter order. Our first opponent is Kojima (A Are) and I decide to play him. My Iori beats up his Blanka pretty good, Sakura comes in and beats up Iori without losing a whole lot of life, then Morrigan comes in. Things are looking pretty even, I activate my meter, then bait his CC. I block it and counter roll, then do my free dash roundhouse short fierce raging demon combo. Right when I'm thinking THAT'S YOUR ASS BITCH the super doesn't come out. About 4 seconds later Sakura hits me with the CC and brings me to like 5% life, then I corner Sakura and kill her with like 4 consecutive mix ups. Had I hit the raging demon I would have still had like 80%. Then Bison comes in, quickly kills Morrigan by a couple dash throws because I'm a retard. Hibiki comes in, and I don't waste any time getting hit by the CC. I don't even remember how I got hit, but I end up with like 30% life left. So I slowly make my comeback, get Bison down to about 55%, activate a stock with two more in the hole, LAND MY LOW SHORTS.... no super. Then while still activated I block a psycho crusher... no super. I slowly get Bison to about 10% or so, and by then he has his meter full again and I get hit by another CC because I'm still a tard. Bleh. I wouldn't have any regrets if I simply been outplayed but I totally don't feel that way. I SO had that guy several times. I almost beat him missing 3 level 3's for chrissakes.
So Kim comes in and quickly gets a fat lead. Something like a full Sagat and Blanka versus Kojima's r2 Bison. Bison does his thing and comes back and wins. No 3rd member, we out. Go team US.
Anyway, Togawa's team plays Daigo's team, and Shiro beats Joe, then Togawa, then ALMOST beats Nitto also, but Nitto somehow lands Cammy counter hit low strong and links the super for the win. Nitto then nearly OCVs Dan with K Geese, then goes on to convincingly beat Daigo also. Good matches.
The top 4 turns out to be Togawa's team, Kichinii's team, Ino's team and Sawada's team. First match is Togawa vs Kichinii's team. Joe totally chokes and misses like 4 cc's and loses, Togawa comes in and beats the first two guys on their team, then Kichinii (the only impressive player on the team. A Geese/Rock/Rolento) beats Togawa with his crazy hard to block Rolento CC. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it involved doing low forwards into KKK jump into immediate d+forward. From there it totally looks like he's gonna land behind the opponent, but he lands in front. I'm told he can control to land on either side, and he has another hard to block CC involving a roll. Anyway, Togawa dies and Nitto comes in. Close match, then Kichinii activates his Rolento CC. Nitto apparently expected the same trick that beat Togawa and instead got hit by a normal pogo jump forward cross up and loses.
Then the highlight of the CvS2 night: Ino's team vs Sawada's team. I'll preface this by saying that a lot of people are really skeptical of Tokido and his new team of N-Vega/Sagat/Blanka. Ino and Nuki were really confident in him however, and in the ultimate form of "save that shit for nationals", nobody's even seen Tokido PLAY for months on end. I played him once before the tourney, and yeah he's the real thing. His N-Blanka is pretty easily the best Blanka I've ever played against. Ino told Kuni that Tokido beats Mago for free, which I saw happen a few times in the casual play area before the tourney.
Anyway, the match starts and they put Tokido against Mago. Tokido is winning with like 70% Vega against like 5% Honda, and Honda knocks down Vega in the corner and rolls in. Most people that have played Mago would expect some sort of RC grab trick right now, but Mago mixes it up and goes straight into level 2 headbutt super. Tokido messes up a reversal RC wall dive and eats all the hits of the super in the air, plus the supercancelled headbutt after. He then gets grabbed or something and Vega dies. Tokido's Sagat comes in and cleans up Honda, and also beats Mago's Sagat. Mago's Blanka cleans up Tokido's Sagat, and then Tokido's Blanka comes in and builds up a pretty big lead. Then Tokido does an anti-air RC ball against Mago, which Mago air blocks and punishes. Then for some reason I'll never know, Tokido does the same thing like 4 more times, all of which are airblocked and punished. Both Blankas have like 2% or something, and Mago lands a random low short or something for the win.
Ino comes in and beats Mago pretty handily, then Kindebu does his A Are thing to Ino and wins. Ohnuki comes in and beats Kindebu pretty quickly with mostly Akuma, and Sawada comes in and picks an R2Blanka/Sak/Bison order to counter Nuki's Akuma. Akuma dies quick, but Chun beats Blanka. Not just that, but he did some crazy series of mix ups to Sawada's Sakura to kill her in like 10 seconds with a perfect. So now it's a full Chun and an R2 Sagat vs Sawada's R1 Bison. I don't remember how Chun died, but Bison gets a few random hits and throws Sagat into the corner, then dashes up to Sagat's downed body. Apparently Ohnuki was expecting a 2P cross up, but it didn't and Bison hits a combo into scissors into CC which seemed to do WAY more damage than usual. Sagat is left at like 1%... enough to die from a blocked psycho crusher. You don't come back from that. Anyway, hella dope matches.
I didn't say this yesterday, but the finals in all the games were total one sided blowouts. The guy that won KOF2003 won with 3 healthy characters and lots of time left, Haitani won Vampire Savior in like 15 seconds still on his first life bar, and that Kage guy ran through the other team in VF4. Well, in CvS2 Mago ran through Kichinii's entire team pretty routinely, and OCVed Kichinii with Honda. Against Kichinii's Rock Mago did RC Honda 360, then another 360, then a 720, then another 360 for the win. So, Sawada's team wins the tourney.
SBO 3rd Strike:
In the last chance qualifiers, Yukino's team makes it to the semifinals and loses to Onanism's team. Onanism's team also beats Daigo's team (Daigo, Nitto, Masumi Sakura) in the finals to make it in.
As you all know, US 3S team did well. The first match Arlieth and Frankie lost, then Pyrolee beat all three members of the other team. Their second match was against a 2 man team, and I guess Arlieth lost and Frankie beat both of them. 3rd match was against Shao and J's team. I don't know the full details, but it came down to Pyro vs J's Makoto, and Pyro accidentally does a blocked qcf+p, and then Makoto grabs him and has her way with him. Had they won they would have made top 4.
Team Nebraska (Izu, KSK, Chikyuu) played some random team. Izu beat the first two guys pretty handily, then he got beat by some Chun player who used lots of dash cross ups into s.rh super. He beats KSK and Chikyuu pretty much the same way.
In the top 4, Mester's Yun beats Match's team all by himself. KO beats the first two member's of J's team, then J's Makoto proceeds to beat KO, Boss and Nuki.
The finals? Total blowout again. Spellmaster J's Ken ran through J's entire team. Winner is Raoh/Spellmaster J/Mester, which was the favored team to win the tourney.
After the tourney there was this crazy scene where we throwing the CvS2 team champions in the air. First we threw Mago up, then Kindebu. Kindebu kinda sorta translates to "golden fat guy", so yea throwing that dude up was rough. I only had his leg and I was still struggling. We almost dropped the dude also. Then we throw up Sawada who weighs like 50 pounds, so he was getting some crazy hang time up there.
Oh yeah, the trailer for SBO2 this year is pretty tight. Slow motion black and white clips from last year's SBO, and in the middle of it is a short FULL SCREEN pic of tragic nodding his head. I was hoping they woulda had me cussing up a storm while playing Dan, but no. =(
So afterwards we head to Shinjuku to get something to eat, and while we're waiting in line Daigo comes up and asks us when we're leaving Japan and to play him at More... which is kinda weird because Daigo never even says hi usually. Anyway, we eat, go to More for a bit and play, then we get invited to some big drinking party with a million CvS2 and 3s players. Pretty much every Japanese player you've ever heard of was there, from Ino to Makoto to Spellmaster J to Chikyuu to Onanism to the KOF2003 champ to... you get the point. The 3s team winners actually used their 1000 dollar prize money to pay for some rented room with all you can drink alcohol (!) and karaoke and stuff. So a few minutes or so pass by, then everybody is raging drunk and singing karaoke to some of the fobbiest songs you will ever hear in your life. So they try to get me to sing some American songs, and I look at the list and it's all like Beatles and Barry Manilow and Backstreet Boys. I'm not exactly down with that, so I kinda surreptitiously slipped the song book in front of Dan.
I had some talks with some players I never really talked to much before, like Chikyuu and Dan and Remio. Chikyuu and top ranked Japanese MvC2 player are going to Evolution this year apparently (Chikyuu still uses Blackheart/Cable/Sonson), and he was asking me about the American Vampire Savior "scene". I told him everything I knew about the game was from training mode and Japanese vids hehe. Onanism asked us a lot of questions about the American video game scene, as did Remio. He then said something about Dan being shy or lonely or something to that effect and that we should introduce ourselves to him. So we go up to him (I'm pretty faded at this point) and say sup and all that, but it didn't really go too well what with my shitty Japanese and him being shy. Oh well.
Japanese players are crazy drunks. Over the course of the night, Mago, Spellmaster J, Hayao and some other dude I don't know all stripped down to their boxers and were prancing around the room, doing fake porno poses and stuff. Hayao gave himself a big fat wedgie also, which was more than a little disturbing. Lots of mooning going on also. Whenever a guy would sing a song badly or if it was a stupid song, everybody would throw their oshiboris (those wet towels you get at restaurants to wash your hands with) at them. Mago comes up and starts doing this horrible rap song, and he gets his fair share of oshiboris thrown at him. Then he does the female part of the song (the lyrics on the screen changed to pink font) in this crazy falsetto voice, and then he was getting all sorts of crap thrown at him.
Anyway, the party and karaoking rages on well into the wee hours of the morning, and me and Kim take off at 5am, get home at 630ish, sleep till 230pm. Yeah. Not going to the last day of SBO today.

The price is reasonable. IIRC, the yen prize is in the 5300 yen range.

Just in case you're curious about the A Are thing, it's just the word for that, ie it's THAT A groove team. I think I recall seeing it first around SBO last year, though who knows when it first started getting used.

Yes, R2 DVDs are expensive.
If for no other reason than the fact that japanese distribution is total ass. 5000+ yen for only top 8 matches is a ripoff.

ok, didn't go to SBO today so I'll write about random things that come to mind.
Japanese Game Slang:
This is all taken from the SBO pamphlet btw, and some of them are pretty weird.
KOF2003 has it's own A Are team. It's called DDxx, where the DD stands for Duo Lon and Daimon. XX is whatever 3rd character is on the team. For example this year's KOF2003 champ, Wars (if that's what the katakana in his name means) used DDK'.
Aka Daimon: means "red Daimon". Since everybody uses DDxx, and Daimon is always the leader character, slang was made for his LDM. It's pretty simple. Since there's a red flash on the screen when he does the super, people say that they got red daimon'ed.
Ue Deyo/Shita Deyo: Translates to "up deyo/down deyo". 'deyo' is the grunt that Sagat makes when he fierces. Hence, high deyo, low deyo. It's kinda fun to say. Actually, a lot of Japanese game slang is based off of the sound that the game/character makes.
Chicken Guard: In CvS2, the tactic of airblocking something intentionally on the way up from your jump, then punishing when you land. Why they call it chicken guard is a mystery.
Baku-Can: The tactic of comboing after Joe's hands on the fourth hit. The move is called Bakudan punch or Bakuretsu punch or something like that, the 'can' is short for cancel.
Bani-Con: "Banish Combo", meaning Bison's Psycho Banish CC.
Sho-Ren/Oni-Ren: Sakura and Iori/Kyo's uppercut guardbreak CC's, respectively. Iori/Kyo's uppercuts are named 'Oniyaki'.
Zen-Can: Japanese term for roll cancel.
Hage: means 'bald'. Refers to Sagat mainly, also applies to Dhalsim. "Fucking Hage keeps low Deyo'ing me!"
Chesto: Slang for Makoto's Hayate dash punch thingie.
Sagyo: An adjective for 3s players who will do nothing but run away and build meter, often in reference to SA3 Yun players.
Muteki XX: Slayer's backdash cancelled moves, called BDC XX in America. Muteki means "invincible".
Shisho: Verb for Chipp dying in one combo when he had a big ass lead. He says "chiksusho!" when he dies, but I guess it sounds like "shisho!". When Chipp players die they go "I Shisho'ed..."
Pyron Sword: Baiken's jump HS. The 2nd place guy at the first GGXX sammy cup tournament (named Pyron)got really far by abusing this move.
Uhh, there's lots more but I got tired of writing about that.
Fobby karaoke songs that come to mind:
MELTY LOVE by Shazna. I mean seriously, how can you get more fobby than MELTY LOVE? Raoh singing it goin MELTY LUB MELTY LUB MELTY LUUUUUUUUUUB while everybody clapping with their hands over their heads like monkeys was too much.
Any Dragon Ash song. Makoto seems to be really into these (well, every other dude at the party knew the lyrics as well). The songs are mostly in english, but not only is the English incomprehenisble, it's also totally nonsensical. Dope lyrics like FAT DA BEAT and something involving the word EJACULATE come to mind.
The Fist of the North Star theme song, which Raoh also sang. YOU WA SHOCK is pretty intense. And the WA isn't even in English, it's in hiragana.
Any song Ochi sings, which is going to be incredibly girly/homo AND fobby.

KOF Neowave and KOF Maximum Impact:
A video reel of Neowave was playing at SBO this year. Well, it looks pretty much exactly the same as any other KOF, except for a slightly higher resolution. It's still pixelly with the higher resolution, if that makes any sense. It kinda looks like the sprites were just anti-aliased a bit. The video clips they showed were pretty dumb. Just a bunch of supers over and over. No real surprising character choices, except Saisyu's in there.
Maximum Impact only showed a CG demo that mostly centered on some new characters with some horrible designs. Some pretty funny English too (A frigid femme fatale?). At least in CG form, the KOF characters manage to look pretty good after the transition.
Random Thought #12
Microsoft is trying REALLY hard to get the XBox accepted here. Huge ads everywhere, slutty XBox hoes promoting, and some crazy promotional deals that we don't get here: Xbox, 2 controller S's, Halo AND Crimson Skies, 2 months of XBox Live, DVD remote, and probably more stuff I don't remember all for like 18,000 yen (about 165 bucks or so).
Even at SBO, there was a XBox kiosk thingie with 5 or 6 playable XBoxes, and no fewer than 10 microsoft people (3 Xbox hoes) working the booth. GGXX #r on XBox live was playable there, I didn't try it though. XBox hoes all picked Sol and mashed out uppercuts though.
Random Thought #13
Every time I go to Japan, there's always a 2 or 3 day grace period before the girls start to get hot. I guess I've been here enough times that effect has worn off on me, because now there's just a ton of "almost hot" girls. They're just about there, just not quite trying hard enough.
Random Thought #14:
The first time I went to Japan like 5 or so years ago, I thought the girls here were all hella wack. At that time, the popular fashion was to go to a tanning booth and nuke the hell out of yourself, then dye your hair a weird color like GREY or WHITE, then apply liberal amounts of silver eyeshadow and white make up. They look like disturbed clowns. Well for some reason 5 years later there's still some stragglers that won't let go of that style, particularly in Shibuya. Yeah, they don't look any better than they did 5 years ago.
SBO2 DVDs:
They get released sometime in June, here's the set up:
Disc 1: GGXX #R. That's it. No other games. 200 minutes of footage.
Disc 2: VF4 evo, T4
Disc 3: KOF2003, Samurai Spirits Zero
Disc 4: 3rd Strike, CvS2, Vampire Savior. I don't like how there's so many games on one DVD. It probably means we'll only get to see the final 8's/4's like last year's DVD.
Tomorrow night I'm going to Sendai, so no more random thoughts from me for a couple days. I completely forgot that I haven't wrote about the 2 sportsland team tourneys I entered, so I'll do that when I get back.

Were you able to buy just some of the CDs last year or did you have to buy the whole pack? Because if I'm getting this years discs I'd rather skip the 3D and SNK CDs. 200 minutes of GGXX#R sounds pretty damn nice though.
Just realized there didn't seem to be any ST this year? Did they drop the game or did you not care enough to write up anything about it?

Do the gals there really have a thing for Americans? I've had a friend or two tell me they tend to be clingy, even if they look at you as nothing more than a makeshift tag along fashion accessory really.

as someone who has spent a lot of time in japan, im gonna say yes. this is obviously a generalization, but being american or british, being black, and playing sports (esp basketball, baseball, or soccer) is gonna get you love over there. any one of those traits will get you hooked up way more. and yes, you will be an accessory...having an american b/f is a status thing for girls there.....plus....it seems like japanese guys arent very nice to women (no real chivalry over there)...so that might have something to do with it.
buk's experiences may differ from my own, but i was there for a while (im going back in two weeks) and i got hooked up. esp when i was carrying my rollerblades with me, or when i had a basketball under my arm on my way to the local court.

I remember reading an article about this when Tokyopop still was printing their magazine. This was hella before she went solo and hit it big, so probably no.
Why they do it tis a good question. Perhaps it's just a counter of how white people like asians, because they think their exotic or because their just different. So they like it, and they want to be that. That or I think their way too into hip pop scene. Just a thought...

No. The bird we call a chicken is not called a chicken in Japanese. The people we call chickens are. It's a negative connotation, since C-Groovers that chicken guard use it to get out of tight spots. I personally think it's an elite tactic... and one that US players haven't mastered yet (which is one of the many reasons why US scrubs can't accept that C-Rolento is eons better than A-Rolento).

and i GUARANTEE once the SBO top 4 comes out and people see that A-rolento stuff, there will magically be an A-rolento resurrection:lol:
you'd think the japanese would just make vids of top players getting beaten by shitty characters on purpose so american players would x-copy it and get crushed at evo or something....

Nothing faulty about it. Kichiini got 2nd place with A-Rolento at SBO. I remember when everyone was saying C-Guile sucked... then when Daigo placed 2nd at SBO, everyone was all over him. Then people were saying C-Ken sucks then Daigo starts using him and everybody was all over that (though I still think C-chun > c-ken IMO).
Basically all I'm saying is don't write off A-Rolento as a crappy character. Kichinii didn't. Look where it got him.

Actually they are saying that. They're saying A-rolento is inferior to the other grooves. And I'm saying that maybe they should watch Kichiini play a-groove rolento before writing off the character. Getting 2nd at SBO prooves that he's doing something right with the character. People watched Daigo play before writing off Guile. They should do the same with Kichinii. Even Buktooth mentioned that Kichiinii was the most impressive player on his team with all the rolento CC mixups. I wouldn't say C-rolento is eons better than a-rolento. It's better, but not eons.

Back from Sendai.
The 4/24 Sportsland 5 on 5 Tourney:
(sorry in advance for the lack of specifics. This happened 2 weeks ago)
So the day after Kim and I arrive in Japan, we head to Shinjuku's West Sportsland for a 5 on 5 tourney. Our team that we assembled a few weeks prior consisted of me, Kim, Ochi (Ricky v2.0 if you remember from Omni's SBO log last year. He's not a particularly good player but he's down as hell), Otaku and Bas.
The tourney is round robin format (5 on 5 round robin!?), and the teams are split into two groups of four; the teams with the best record in the two groups go on the finals. Out of the 7 teams, the main problem teams were:
Buffest Team: Makoto, Ohnuki, Ino, Sawada (no 5th)
Second Buffest Team: Mago, Togawa, Kindebu, Joe (now using A-Blanka/Bison/Kyo2), Remio (P-Kyo/Ken/Cammy. Buff)
Third Buffest Team: Daigo, Dan, Nitto, Konto (some guy. Kinda sucks) Komemaru (A-Hibiki/Kyo/Sak. Buff)
Fourth Buffest Team: Iyo, Version, Morikawa, Bouya, Some Other Guy
By extreme luck combined with the magic of randomly drawn brackets, Group A is comprised of the three buffest teams and our team. Group B has Iyo's team, two teams of random'ish guys and a bye.
So our first match is against Ino's team. They put Makoto up first, while Ochi goes first on our team (he isn't a very serious player, so he always went first). Makoto beats him up pretty handily with mostly Kyo alone. I go up next and we had just got to Japan the day before and weren't used to the sticks yet, so I get beat up pretty bad by his P-Vega. Kim goes next and does better, but still loses. Ino's team 3, our team 0. Not looking good.
Otaku goes up next. In a very entertaining battle, Otaku wins the K-Kyo vs P-Kyo match up, then proceeds to win the rest of the match pretty decisively by tossing him around the screen with Rock. Ohnuki goes up next, gets smoked by K-Rock for trying to jump away from the mix ups. Ino goes up next, and in Miu's words (he's the announcer for the Sportsland tourneys), it was a battle between Kanto's (Tokyo area) and Kansai's (Osaka area) best K-Groove players. Otaku goes on to beat Ino pretty badly with mostly Kyo. Last up on Ino's team is the newest dominator Sawada. As we all know, A Are vs most any K Groove team is a pretty sad situation for K Groove, so we weren't real confident in Otaku pulling this one off. Otaku basically said fuck you Sawada and proceed to JD the first hit of his Sak CC and Raging Storm him, and also landed several Rock counters out of nowhere. Hibiki comes in to hold the lead against a beleaguered Blanka and Otaku walks away with the win against Ino's whole team. Meanwhile, Bas is still sitting on the sidelines waiting to play.
Next up is Mago's team. The player we were worried about most on that team was Mago since Kim and I have next to no smart Honda experience. So Ochi goes up against Mago, and somehow, pulls off the biggest upset of the whole tourney. Nothing really crazy happened, just Ochi happened to do a lot of things that people didn't think he was capable of doing. After the match, pretty much everybody in the crowd was yelling "OCHIII" in really high pitched cutesy voices while messing with his hair and stuff, which is kinda disturbing.
Joe goes up next and takes out Ochi. Kim comes in and turns on the beast mode, beating Joe, Remio, and Togawa all in a row. Kindebu comes in and beats Kim, then I come in and had Kindebu beat, then get killed by BLANKA roll custom because I'm a champ like that. Bas comes in and loses to Kindebu also, then Otaku comes in. He JDs Sak cross up forward, JDs her standing jab, then she activates CC and he JDs her standing fierce and kills Sak with Hibiki blackout super. WTF indeed. Anyway, Otaku beats another A Are team to finish off Mago's team.
Daigo's team next. Daigo goes first and and beats me Ochi and Kim, then Otaku comes in and beats all 5 members of that team straight.
That puts us in the finals against the winners of B Block, Iyo's team. I don't remember exactly what happened, but it went something like Kim beat Bouya, last to Version. I beat Version, lost to Iyo. Bas loses to Iyo also, Otaku beats Iyo in a VERY close match to win the tourney. Had Otaku lost that one match we woulda got second hehe. I don't really remember what happened to Morikawa and the other guy on Iyo's team. Maybe Kim beat them or something. Anyway, our team won on pretty much Otaku's crazy skills alone.

Gunters handy English synopsis here:
http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/thread59947.php
Too Otaku highlights to remember (and I don't remember exactly who he did them too either), but here's some off the top of my head:
-JD first 3 hits of Sagat level 2 hotfoot, Kyo flame super
-SEVERAL instances of JDing Sak CC iand super'ing her in the grill
-The most random Hibiki and Rock counters hitting out of nowhere, such as low jump roundhouse, wait, counter. Or even better, low short short, walk up hella far, counter (Hibiki counters usually followed by blackout super)
-Tons of resets involving Rock's teleport and grab
-Otaku's patented Run Into Throw technique, which I still have no idea how he does it. He runs and stops for like a split second and throws you in one seamless motion.
-comboing the ground pound off of Kyo's flame super midscreen
-attack patterns with all three of his characters that result in a dizzy after 1-2 successful mix ups
And yeah, other stuff. Otaku=beast.

I looked at the pictures on the japanese site, and if I hadn't known it was you, I would say it was another japanese palyer standing on the far left.
Congrats on winning the tourney. I've come to believe Otaku is pretty fantatulastic. This log has convinced me even more that I need to go to Japan soon, before the CvS2 scene dies on me....

Hm, I think we all would like to know what your (campbell's) opinion on the top 10 players. Especially with your experiance at SBO, you should know better than any American who is goooood. Maybe even there team also *shrug*. Anyway, tight log lol

Interesting.
EDIT: Oh I disagree with Arcadia's Samurai Shodown Zero tiers. I don't think Yoshitora owns all because of his damn QCF X B and standing B and the rest. Way too predictable.
Buk:
Since you're in Japan and are friends with Otaku, would you mind asking him just how the heck JDing the first hit of Sakura's CC, then punishing her works? I've been trying to do this on and off for over the past year and have yet to get it even just once. If you could get a technical style explaination that would be great. Thanks!

Sigley did when he played Ortiz a while back. There's a slight pause where you can JD the first six hits by pressing back once or twice (as pressing it six individual times is literally impossible) which causes enough of an open window to do a super if I'm not mistaken.
I've been working on it myself, and I think it is actually possible to JD her CC, but only with quick taps but once. Something about all six hits registering as one JD motion (ie pressing back merely once, then once again to register the second set of six). After the first set most folks tend to stop out of confusion anyway.
Of course I'm not expert in the game, but I'm just throwing something out there, as I'm curious as well.

Yoshitora has more then that though. He's good with enlightenment, he's got a good jumping fierce, a crossup, a good low hitting super, and the 7th special that's a friggin unlimited super unto itself. He's not unbeatable, but he has alot of stuff to work with.

The logic is faulty because 1) CvS2 wasn't run in Single Match Mode. Rolento had partners. And 2) the tournament itself wasn't in one-on-one format. The team that had Rolento on it was assisted by a team with A-Blanka/Hibiki/Bison, and A-Sakura/Bison/Blanka. So obviously A-Rock/Geese/Rolento is top tier?
When I went to Japan with Choi, we entered a team tournament, teaming with BAS and Ohnuki... I only won one match, and we got second place. I was using A-Zangief. In other words, by your logic, "I got 2nd place with A-Gief." Is there "nothing faulty" with that logic?

Not a top player, but the Japanese respect the game, and respect the player playing. So if you're using punk tactics(Duolon, ST Gouki come to mind), they'll look down on you, but if you have a solid game, they'll sometimes go out of their way to commend you(I got a penpal from Tokyo the time I participated in a small 2k3 tourney in Ikebukuro, and all the locals in my fav arcade give me props).

Doesn't matter if it's predictable if it's difficult to stop and safe if done from the right distance. What does matter is if the person gets the infinite down and the zero movement, you're either as good as dead or lost a huge chunk of life.

some quickies before I leave for the day.
Random Game Related Thoughts:
Some guy was playing the computer in SvC and was doing some weird Dhalsim glitch. He air teleports, then when he reappears he flies around the screen at light speed and is apparently controllable. It looked pretty impossible to block.
Famous Tokyo Vampire Savior Hoe (pronounced HO-ay, not HO) had 68 wins at More the other day with his crazy Jedah. He then beat the game and left. I guess he's still kinda miffed that he lost to Haitani in his first match in the final 8 at SBO.
Aulbath has some kind of pseudo-infinite involving his bubble move, then the poison gas, then a chain combo into sweep, then another bubble again. I don't know exact details.
Sol apparently wasn't top tier enough, so Daigo has switched to Slayer. He's doing somewhat well so far.
GGXX legend Kaqn has a really really hot girlfriend (at least from the side) who is crazy good with Millia. She goes by the name Akira, and is apparently pretty famous. And hot.
KOF2003 machines are slowly getting replaced by KOF2002 machines in a lot of the serious arcades I've been to. Duo Lon usage doesn't seem to have dropped noticable after SBO. Still mostly DDxx teams.
Good luck finding a dedicated SvC cabinet nowadays. If you do find an SvC, it will be sharing the same cabinet as the likes of KOF95 and old Metal Slug games.
Still haven't seen anybody playing GGXX Isuka yet. I'm still curious as to what a 4 player battle looks like.
Now that SBO is over, everybody is back to messing with N-Groove again. I glanced over at the CvS2's at More yesterday and saw 5 N-Grooves and 1 K-Groove.
Alpha 3 is pretty dead here. I'm told there's one arcade in Ikebukuro where the remaining A3 players will gather from time to time, but I haven't been there to check numbers.
Kuni told me about a spot where all the ST old men gather on fridays. At Tri-Tower in Akihabara you pay 5 bucks, then you get to play freeplay ST from 6pm to midnight. All the old dudes you can handle are there from what I hear.

Heh, I just found a couple videos of his Jam in GGXX#R from a link in Video Opera. He instantly became my GGXX inspiration. Crazy stuff. Does Kaqn uses any other characters? How did he do in SBO2?

Edit: just found out in SBO's page. Second.
Edit 2: is she famous for being good, hot or both?

he actually explained this a while back when Ino did it last SBO.I believe it was you have to JD and pump the DP motion before activation, then mash the button after the activcation flash

Yeah, if you've seen the SBO1 finals you'll notice how he only JD's the first hit then Cannonspike's that horny lil girl. I don't know how you do it exactly, but "pumping the motion" seem a bit vague. It's probably done during the super freeze.... but that's just a guess by a non K-groove player.

Quite frankly, judging from your last post on this game as well, I don't understand why Sammy doesn't release an updated version of this game, similar to what they did for Reloaded.
Considering the number of team tournaments they seem to have, I'd figure Japanese players would love this concept if done correctly. As you mentioned, Team Attack needs to be off and a focus button would be much better than a turn button. Also, why get rid of dust? Why not just put the focus button in that empty area where the forward button is on SF cabinets?
