Hamilton ON Thread

Just an attempt to get Hamilton, Ontario Street Fighter Players talking...hopefully, people will use it...if not, oh well, it'll just die and we can all get on with the rest of our lives...

Anyways, the Campus Cove at Mohawk College just got a 3rd Strike machine to go next to the (blah)CvS1 that I was sick of playing...Got the ball rolling getting my name on the list with a 19 game win streak with Ibuki which will probably last just long enough until Rey starts beasting with Makoto or Yun...

For CvS2 competition, Saturday at Eastgate Square on Queenston and Centennial is usually where you can at least get a couple of people to play at around 1-5pm....

For MvC2 competition...well...fuck, we ain't got a machine, so if anyone is interested in it, post here and maybe we can get some casual event going sometime...

Yo Justin. Nice tourney at Woodbine...just really couldn't adapt to the sticks but it was all good. Hopefully I'll be at some more in the future and hopefully put up a better fight. Do you know when T5 or whatever the big TO tourney is going to be held? Best of luck to you and your friends at ECC9 by the way...

Anyways, here's a rundown of who's who...that I know of at least anyways.

RJ or rpgv2 is Rey who was at a couple of UNs at Orbit...you probably know him better as that guy who was using K Yuri that one night that I remember you being impressed with(his air JD into air throw with her is too good). He's Hamiltons undisputed #1 guy right now(grrr...bastard with your JDs and your A combos) :)

Chono is Vanny, who you've talked to here before. He's a CBS whore in CvS2 but we like him anyways. :lol: He uses Iori and Hibiki too.

veggiebob_2000 is Jimmy who throws me, on average, about 10 times a match in CvS2. Innovator of the full screen throw(that only works on me) He was at that UN with us too. He uses Cammy, the guy in our group that was wearing glasses.

chr0n1c is John who was at the Woodbine tourney using K Nakoruru Morrigan Cammy and he's getting better all the time.

John's friend Darko hasn't posted here yet so I don't know his nick...he's a good P Groover though and took it to me last night at EG

I'm Jamie(JaMIe, not Jaime...this happens all the time...hehe) I go by WB!(don't ask me what it stands for), Skyflake(its an asian cracker :lol:) or whatever the hell else people are using to insult me these days...

There's a bunch of others too, at Eastgate, there are twins, Bob and Jeff who play, Aaron and Alan not to mention a bunch of people who play at Mohawk college like Vince, Mario, Isaiah and others but they can introduce themselves as it goes...

Hamilton has more or less a struggling fighting game scene mostly because we don't have many arcade cabinets(1 CvS2 1 3S 0 MvC2 2 CvS1(why?) 1 SvC(ugh!))...but its kind of getting more together these days and we might at the very least start doing some console tourney crap or something in the near future....

To all Hamilton people, tell people about this thread and get them to post... :) Feel free to mock me in any way(have a funny feeling I'm going to regret saying this.)

Hmm... I have pictures in my head of the various Hamilton guys but can't really place everything. In any case, there are more of you guys that I had initially thought (I seem to only think of four of you for some reason). I think it'd be a good idea if Team Brampton and Team Hammer (yes I've given you guys a name) got together sometime for a friendly 4 on 4 (I'd say 5 on 5 but Pete is never around). Hamilton isn't that far away from Brampton (35 - 40 minutes if that) so it'd be a relatively easy drive.

BTW Jaime; you should make Geese your R2. He was pretty dominant against Dennis.

Funny thing is that Team Hammer name you gave to us stuck with me, Vanny, Rey and Jimmy and we've been calling ourselves that ever since...we sort of have a home page that Rey was fooling around with but we only have a title page so far...its the best title page in the history of web title pages, hands down. :) Maybe one of us will actually put up actual content eventually...

I'll shop the idea for the Brampton vs Hammer 4 on 4...we gotta make it happen though because we need some out of town competition to take on to gain some good experience. Especially since there are a few around here who plan on making it to TO tourneys sometime in the future.

Yeah, Roger commented about me using Geese as R2 and it probably is a good idea. Part of that though is just cause Geese was the only thing working for me at Woodbine. In Hamilton, I'm more feared for my Chun Li than my Geese...

Jamie, my K-groove still sucks ass. The only thing that was saving me was my blanka. I couldn't JD a fireball to safe my life... But I hit mr. roboto with Van's Special #2 3 times. So that was the highlight of my saturday cause i couldnt' stop laughing each time i did it...

But it was pretty boring there. It's not right if i don't get owned by either you or rey.

Yeah, actually, if we do a Brampton vs Hammer 4 on 4 in CvS2, I'd prefer to have Rey, Vanny and Jim on my team. We're basically the group that's been around for that game since the game first came to EG and they're the main guys I've been gaming with for ages now. No offense to any of the other gamers in Hamilton or anything.

Anyways, like I said, this week, I'm there Wed, when Darko and John usually pass by, and Thurs, both days about 4:45ish. I can't do any gaming on Friday at all unfortunately.

BTW; it's good to see actual rivalries among players. Team Brampton sort of works together because there aren't enough of us to be rivals (even though we secretly hate each other). Team Sauga just fight with each other unless they have to face TOSF in Marvel (what's the deal with that anyway?). Toronto seems like a bunch of individuals. So when you get actual teams of players feuding it's pretty good. Let's you know that the scene isn't so dead as peple think.

That's cool, but if we could figure out something for a day that your off on a weekend would be good. Most likely if me and the rest of guys show (rey, jamie, jimmy) it would have to be on the weekend. Rey's car can barely make it out of his driveway and jamie and jimmy don't drive. Pizza, beer and street fighter always make for a good day or night.


Justin, good point you put there. Hopefully with a new revived scene the hammer can earn some respectability. If you guys wanna have a little team comp on the weekend, that would be good... it would make the arcade a little more interesting this weekend cause it would give some people (rey) a reason to be serious, just a thought.

All we really need is a date. Team Brampton usually makes time if we know it's worthwhile. Considering we only get to play you guys at UN, it'd be fun to make the trip (or have you over) for games. There is no MvC2 scene here mostly because we have no machines here that any of us know of, yet we have two CvS1s and an SvC...blah.

I can't really begin to describe how much I suck at MvC2. Me personally, I only ever play casual every now and then. I'd bet anything on Mississauga owning us for free without question; I've seen what they can do at a UN before.

As for 3rd Strike, I'm okay at that game although I've not really been into competition much with that game...I pulled out of the Woodbine tourney cause I saw some of the TO casual beforehand and decided not to get my ass handed to me and instead focus on getting thrashed in CvS2.

I'd be better at 3S if I didn't fall for Vanny's garba...err... I mean special strategies... :) Vanny Special #2 > me

3s tourny sounds great....just make it best 2 out of 3 since it's a feakin' dollar to play.....makes sense since it's a dollar for 2 credits and all....and if enough people show up it can be double elimination....is that 2-4 weekend? i can't remember which weekend is the long weekend now hahaha

NOt so much the use of the groove because id liek to learn some CRAZY CC's just to have some fun every now and then. But what bugs me the most is when peopleActivate and mash a button like FP (which moves you forward and it keeps you on the ground) and then lob off a super, that is if they remebr to do it after all that mashing. :lol:

Personally when the scaling has taken effect, i can do a more damaging 3 hit combo with Guile then one of loose two move wonder CC's. really the only reason i see them doign it to gain advantage when they activate. Ah well whatever.

Thats my beef on A-groove, and the people who use it that way. Other than that i see some people go K.

A-groove is stupidly good. The invincibility upon activation lets you blow through a lot of attacks on reaction. Plus the cc system is much freer than A3 vcs.

there is the APEX rankings, if u notice at the startpage of SRK on the right hand side it's for tournaments....and depending on how many people entered....it determines how many points that person gets.....I never really looked into how it's done....so check that out

Haha I've been playing SF since like mid-late 91. I rely primarly on World warrior, CE, HF, ST old school tactics to play 3s, cvs2, etc... So basically my cvs2 skills consist of sf 2 tactics with RC and World warrior characters (haha ask Dogberry).

Well it's the best way to learn i think. Cause in the old games it was like one mistake and you're gonna be fucked right up. And come backs were a lot harder since there was no specials. So you had to use everything that you had at your disposal.

Sorry Team Hammer, i couldn't win too many more matches after you guys left, i got to 37 and then i lost. But i had a 6 game win streak afterwards. I didn't seen to pay attention after when the lady said last game, but i lost to one of the twins. I'm sorry if i don't know your names, i'm pretty drunk right now. Playing team Bas as a team was kinda fun, I think that we should do that more often, it's good to fool around with and learn some new characters.

Im gonna go into serious training with Guile and Blanka and come back as a 2/2 team, solely for the reason i fuckin hate the tension picking a 3rd character gives me. Every frikken match i have anyways with someone in my skill level always ends up my battery char dying then blanka beats 1.5 to 2 chars and fuckin Guile cleans up... but that hasnt been happening lately, so im gonna train up hard for a while come back when i have something to be a challenge with. in the meantime Remy will have to fill my void of Street fighter playing.

Why isn't guile your battery? Guile is probably the best battery in the game (aside with honda ahha), builds meter so fast. This could be your problem, experiment with guile/blanka/xx (xx being any character you wanna put in there to finish things up haha).

My Sim's pretty ghetto. I win most of my matches just on noogie ticks and the 50/50 throw/combo mixup alone. I only started playing Sim on CVS2 even though I knew how good he was from CE onward. hehe.

Anyways, I am going to talk to the arcade manager sometime this week about a possible CvS2 tourney at EG. If she is okay with the idea of putting the machine on tourney mode and stuff, I'd say the likeliest date for a tourney would be a Saturday in early-mid June since next weekend is 2-4 and the weekend after that is ECC9.

The one problem I foresee automatically in having a CvS2 tourney though is that the arcade closes at 5:30 on Saturdays, so the tourney would likely have to start at 11amish to make sure it can be done in time...

I'll post a thread about it in the Tournament News section as soon as I can get something concrete set up.

Speaking of tourneys, what is the status of next weekends 3S tourney?

yeah they took out RC in gamecube, xbox and ps2

so if you want to practice RCin play on the DC...DC is the best version to play on out of all the consoles

Yeah you didn't have the greatest of showings last week. It's all good though; I know adjusting to the lag can be a bit of a chore at first but after a while your game alters just a bit and you can't even notice. I'll leave the Alpha 3 debacle alone.

AFAIK, METRO is the only arcade in the GTA that has a Super Turbo machine and unless things have changed recently it's got sticks that rank somewhere between crap and shit.

There's nothing wrong with using Kaillera for training. It's basically an unlimited supply of opponents. After a few games, adjusting to the minimal lag (it's really just a matter of getting a decent server) is pretty easy. In fact, when making the transition to DC (played way too many games with Jason yesterday, like 30 in a row) it became easier to hit everything because I'd grown used to the lag and it was like a treat playing on a normal machine.

I finally managed to catch the arcade lady at Eastgate and asked her about a possible CvS2 tournament. Unfortunately, she shot it down pretty quickly. She barely even listened to me explain anything about it really before telling me that tournaments at EG "are a no-no." I'll keep trying to feed the idea to her when I see her and see what happens...

Anyways, unless something changes I should be at EG on Saturday around 1ish...the usual time. Unless someone wants to set up casual instead that day?

that was the first time i'd played bison since they had the machine by DDR. wish i could practice that combo a lil on the DC but man, without an arcade stick, its almost pointless, plus my DC CD is so scratched up, i can't play bison, nako, sakura. amongst other characters. i lose like 2 per week!!1 anywayz, i'm still learning the activations so once i get that locked down, hopefully i can lay down a few reps of the dark banish. bison... he's every a-groovers destiny (if i could call myself an a-groover)

Jeff, your Nak took it to me a bit the first match, but I adjusted a bit. Then, considering Nak is one of those characters who has less endurance and stuns easier than other characters(60 stun points instead of 70 or 80) and Geese is a hard hitter, that's why those other matches went the way they did. Nak vs Geese is a bad match up for Nak it seems...

Ike, there's no reason to do ducking mk to lp reppuken...he's got tons of things that link easily...duck lp, stand fp, mp reppuken, stand lk, duck fp, hcb+mk or deadly rave or the duck lp, duck lp, duck fk...mk to lp reppuken is the last thing you should be doing...and Vega isn't that hard to understand...poke a lot(duck mp, stand fp), work a throw game(including air throw), move a lot and be unpredictable, look for lvl 3 claw against jump ins...

I suggest that you don't play Vega. :P Seriously, just move around alot with Vega. In C it's a little different then K or N, the lack of running makes his game a little less all over the place. But I'm sure that you'll figure something out.

Played sloppy as hell yesterday which just doesn't cut it fighting against Rey, who put up another monster streak, but its all good. Gotta clean up my game though.

Vince, I should be able to make it next Sunday but can't until about 7ish due to previous plans with girlfriend.

Chances are Brampton/Sauga players won't be able to make it cause its ECC9 weekend if I'm not mistaken. Still, Hamilton players should try to make this so we can try to get a decent SF scene going here...and so everyone can meet, have fun, whatever...

Oh yeah, mario. I think that if you wanna still try to get better at CVS2, you should drop A groove. Try C, K or N. It's a little more basic, and just as effective as A. I just see you labouring to get out CC's and missing them. Something basic like C would be perfect for your game. Simple super links like C.fp xx anything would help you out the most. Cause I think that you're trying to be a little too flashy and it's not helping you. Rememer, damage wins the game, flash is just flash. Just a little suggestion.

I've been playing A-groove forever... It was the first groove I used in that game... I switched through N and K for a while... but it always ended up back at me playing A. However, I've been playing the game since it came out, and I'm just getting the hang of getting all my CC's perfect now...

MY POINT IS... that you shouldn't use A-groove from the start because you wind up missing a lot of the basics of the game. I only started learning how the game works when I started playing C and learned all the stuff I should have known, then brought it back into my A-teams. Really, go with C if you need to get the game down and solid, then choose your groove from there after you learn the poking games with your main characters.

Yeah, that's what i was trying to say. You just said it a lot better than i could have.

One more thing.

Try to pick a group of characters that fit your style. Such as a range fighter, rusher or pacer. Someone that you like, and has a good set of normals that you feel will benefit you the most. Like I wouldn't go picking up Team Bas because it does damage. Sak and Bison don't fit my game style, so it would hurt me instead of help me.

In a nut shell, sit around with some different characters that you think might work for you and play around with them. Find out some poke chains, then test the range of the normals, and then try to learn some links. That's probably the best way to learn the game and improve.

I guess a thing to add to what's already said is that I originally was an A Groove user(well, I started with P, then switched to N but ended up being mostly A) but dumped it partly because I was focusing way to much on CCs and not enough on anything else like, you know, basics. Like I have this wicked Kyo CC that I've hit in training mode and stuff but I rarely hit it in an actual match so...what's the point?

Bread and Butter stuff is far more important. Its why I switched to C and have pretty much stuck with it for most of the last year.

I remember when CvS2 first came out before all the talk of CBS being top tier and P Vice was my main character...geez

I remember when EG first got cvs2 I started to use A-terry,kyo,king and thought they were good cause of the CC's i did in training mode....but I lost so much with them...cause of the same reason jamie said...I just looked for the CCs and didn't know basics....so after I went to K groove and used like geese,blanka,rock,sagat,geif for the longest time since I didn't have to rely on rolls or CCs and learned the basics all over again from the world warrior days

so do like vanny says....use who u feel comfortable with....like for my K team now I use yuri...majority of the people who play think she's not close to top tier...but she works most of the time for me...it just takes more work to win with lower-tier characters

guess i'll throw in my two cents on the a-groove discussion. i used to play n-groove for the longest time, then switched to k, then decided to give a-groove a shot and i've pretty much stuck with it ever since. i've been playin it as my main groove since last summer i guess... and yeah i still mess up my cc's like 75 percent of the time. it's not so bad as before (i'd activate cc, do like two fierce hits, fuck up, then get nailed by a level 3), but yeah i'm getting there. if you really wanna play it as your main groove, don't focus on nailing the cc's all the time and just use it when you get the opportunity, and don't forget that you can't block when ur activated. start with easy cc chars like ken, athena, terry, haoh, etc. to get the hang of nailing the combos, then move on to harder chars like akuma, bison, etc...

and lastly practice, practice, practice...

the first charachters i think i ever played were blanka/sagat (just a coincidence, i swear!!) dhalsim/hibiki/vega/haohmaru (but who didn't after seeing his fierce!)

i never really stuck with a particular groove, in fact, i think the groove i played the longest was actually s-groove though i never really knew what to do with it... just ended up dodging like 100000 times per round, and i think i even won one or two. mostly on account of inf. tiger cannon abuse, hehe. but like jamie said, i never really used the characters well, i was always too concerned about using the groove. u gotta learn the characters basics first, normals, bnb's etc. then incorporate the grooves abilities.

using who you're comfortable with, i think this is key since you'll do alot better with a character you can play, than one who is frustrating you.

my thoughts on a-groove. well, i've really only played a few characters on it and am not very consistant with the CC's but i'm really starting to feel the love with Chang. damn, his cc does A TON of damage... :mad:

damn, now i'm feeling nostalgic about s-groove... wouldn't mind picking it up again, though i don't really wanna play cammy or sagat and i hear they're pretty much essential if you want to succeed in s.

Actually, me and my bro play and so does Aaron. We play every once in a while during the week at my house, but there's no actual machine around so there's really nowhere to play new people.

Maybe they'll get an MvC2 machine at Mac... who knows. I know we share the machines with York University so whever new stuff comes we pretty much get their leftovers. e.g. when we requested that they get CvS2, the guy told us that we'd only get it if York didn't want it. one of mine is an x-arcade (eww) and the other one that is on it's way is a custom stick made by dreaded fist...

the x-arcade (now known as x) is alright.. but i think it takes a little bit of working in.. practice and fine tuning to make it work right.. it's ok.. not 100% but.. not crap either.. it's very well put together.

if you want to get a stick.. get a stick from dreaded fist. he accepts paypal which makes things easy.. and is good for shipping up to our great white north

I use a PSX -> DC converter and found an old ASCII stick at cheapies a few years back....

Jim has one of this orginal namco ones for the psx and he found that at microplay...

I also got some crap one that I'm too lazy to fix so i'm either going to scrap it or maybe fix it when I get it off jamie

if you want.. i can get parts easily and mod your sticks with better parts.. most of the time the parts that come in sticks are pretty low quality.. mostly made in china and taiwan. even x-arcade parts are junky and made in taiwan... if you want i can swap stick parts for a fee... dreaded charges varying ammounts depending on what you want.. and he's really good at answering any questions you have... my stick cost me a square 200$ CDN, i dont' have plexi/art, but i do have a japanese stick layout...and if you need a DC adapter he also sells those with his sticks. they are super high quality.. if you haven't already seen his thread in the hardware section, check it out.. and hook up with him... just mention that i sent you there cuz i told him i'd get him some customers.

it's funny cuz i used to remember reading EGM and what not and they'd sell those sticks for the SNES that were exactly like the arcade. in fact, the ad was an arcade stick that was ripped out of a street fighter machine. i always said to myself, "why would anyone pay so much for a freakin' arcade stick!! i hate those things!"... now i realise why they were so popular.

i really do need a new controller though... my dc pad is fuct. i'm gonna look into doing it myself though... could be alot cheaper.

hey gen. shipping will rape you hard. its' really expensive the way Happ (the best parts you can get) sends their stuff.. and Sanwa (the japanese guys) you pretty much need to have a super translatomatic machine there to get an idea of what the heck your doing...200 dollars is pretty much standard for a excellent quality stick... one that has a nice heavy base that doesnt' slide like a bitch...and feels like the real thing.

P.S I NEED EVERYONE THAT PLANS TO MAKE IT ON SATURDAY/SUNDAY TO EMAIL ME THEIR NAME AND NUMBER. i'm goign to make a list of names/numbers of SF players in Hamilton and then send it to everyone, so people can stay in touch for casuals/tournaments and what not. it's a good way to make our SF community grow.

$200??? I got my stick from Snaaake for $163 with plexi/art. Got the buttons setup in the amercian layout. He built the box from stratch and can customize it any way you want it. only bad thing is that you might have to wait a while for it to ship cuz he's got a lot of customers to take care of. i think mine took a month.
