View Full Version : New(ish) Feature at Sonic Hurricane

For those of you who haven't been to Sonic Hurricane (http://sonichurricane.com) lately, about a month ago i started this notebook thing. It's basically random shit that i come up with on a weekly basis, one or two clips at a time. The reason i'm mentioning it here is that it's sort of tied to SRK in a weird way. Basically SRK premium members get access to entries two weeks in advance. There's always two new titles with screenshots under "Pending Entries" that are already available to SRK premium members. Read the "General Guidelines" bit for more detailed info.

I just wanted to provide another SRK premium perk to help out in my own way. So if any of you are interested in that sort of thing and were thinking about paying a few bucks to support this bandwidth-vacuum of a forum, now you have another reason to get on board. I've got about two months worth of clips done and i'm always working on more.

they should have a different forum of its own for people who are wanting to talk serious strats and whatnots, maybe run by buk, not this joke of a forum based on flames, who the best shoto is, and random junk. just an idea.

Maj

Here's where you should post that idea: http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/thread60978.php

Plus, there's already a Strategy forum for each current popular game. It's not SRK's fault that most people choose to hang out in Fighting Discussion instead.

Thanx Viscant! White people rock!

Jinrai:
That vid was fun to make and it had some weird stuff in it, but it's pretty dated and a lot of the stuff has been used elsewhere. Still, if anyone wants it, you can always email me or something. My email address is on the site's contact page. Or PM if you are lazy, but i check email way more regularly.

If it exists in CvS2, you will find it, sir. I don't think there's anything about that game that you DON'T know.

Keep it up. ^_^

Maj: yeah thats a good point.

for the crazy awkward video, I have alot of ideas in mind that people dont kow about (i dont think) but I dont have a capture card, could you whip something up for me?

Maj
05-20-2004, 04:44 PM
I hate to turn down a request, but giving people the impression that i'm willing to do their work for them is something i'm absolutely not prepared to do. While i certainly want to hear about (or preferably see) any new CvS2 ideas, it's always time that i'm short on, not ideas.

In all fairness though, all the computer hardware/software i use to make vids is listed on my site's contact page. The capture card itself was about $150 when i bought it, but it goes on ebay now for under $40. If that's still out of your price range, the best thing to do is to record the stuff you want capped onto a video cassette. Then try to find someone on SRK with a cap card who's got a little more free time than i do right now. It shouldn't be that difficult, considering how many people release match videos on a daily basis.

A little bit of video quality is lost when you put stuff on VHS, but it's barely noticeable. If you want to be a perfectionist, you can also record the stuff as VMU replay saves so that they can be capped directly from the Dreamcast. But as the ongoing debate over akumacombos.com has shown, most people care way more about actual content than recording quality or video editing. So VHS tapes are fine. That's how i started making my vids before i got a capture card - just recorded the stuff with my VCR and drove half an hour to a friend's place to get them capped at the cost of a Norms/Dennys dinner.

I think you've found stuff the programmers are saying "wtf" to.

In the interest of appeasing Maj: Why don't you make a video about when (to the frame) you can press PPP to get boss battle mode in CvS2 huh? And then say how it applies to CvS1. Maybe you could analyze the differences in the menus and then comment how nobody would ever care about this and it'll never get used in an actual match. Yeah, sounds like a great update to me.

omni
05-22-2004, 10:08 AM
I was sorta looking for the frame counts on when to press the necessary buttons to reset the match.

Maj
05-23-2004, 10:42 AM
Pained Auron:
Put a little more effort into it.

Robyrt:
Actually it does apply to CvS1 cuz that game's Pair Match Mode was activated in the same way in the arcade version of CvS1, but i don't have the necessary equipment to test it. All the rest of the menus are just too different, with the exception of the in-game pause menu and it's mostly an aesthetic similarity. I think the CvS2 menu system is way better because of the B button escape command. CvS1 doesn't have that so you gotta find the "Back" command on the menu with the cursor. Though i'm not sure how this would apply to actual matches or why anyone would care.
(lol tight post, thx)

omni:
Even if i did have a way to accurately measure frame counts on stuff, which i don't, it would still be kinda useless because the stuff that's going on in the game affects menu speeds. The biggest thing is a C-Groove superfreeze, which makes it almost impossible to navigate through the menu and get anything done. I'm afraid you just gotta be OG on that one and feel it out.

Any more haters?!??

Anyway, i posted another notebook update. The theme might be kinda old, and i'm sure most expert Hibiki players know about it. But i'm also sure that 90% of everyone else doesn't. Plus even if everyone did know about it, the combo in the second clip is still cool i think. At least i haven't seen it anywhere else yet. Also updated previews with a bunch of screenshots of what's already available in Premium Forum. That experiment yielded better combos than i had thought it would.

the second hibiki combo was mad cool,im glad someone put up a vid of the fireball thing,i had heard about it but i have only gotten it a few times in training mode.its nice too see new stuff after all this time, mad props for trying to do something new.

Maj
05-25-2004, 08:58 AM
Yeah, that combo took forever because Hibiki has to walk forward slightly after the KKK dodge or else she gets far standing fierce instead. I'm happy with it tho, looks cool and it's midscreen too.

As Kamui mentioned to me earlier, the trick might be good when used for anti-air, especially against K-Groove or P-Groove. The good thing about it is that the cancel window happens really late into the move. So you're free to push the button early to have it out completely before the opponent's jump reaches you and still be able to cancel into something safe like KKK dodge or maybe her counter move if you're brave. Having to perform most antiair normals early means you generally don't get to cancel them into anything. But i don't play Hibiki so i won't be the one to figure out if it's worth the effort.

Maj
05-27-2004, 09:52 AM
So ... anybody tried any of this stuff out and found anything interesting? I'm sure there's a thousand variations i just didn't think of testing. I'm really not trying to be an attention whore or anything, but if i can't get any intelligent criticism at the biggest expert-level fighting game forum in the world, then wtf is the point?

Has anyone had any luck doing whiff cancels with any other character? Gotten anything interesting out of that fireball height glitch? Has anyone tried getting a similar effect without using throws?

Don't worry, more stuff is coming. Maybe the stuff i have in store for later will be more interesting and will be easier to discuss, but the current trend is a little worrysome. I dunno how much longer i can keep this up if the only person making CvS2 videos besides myself is master akuma. And no offense to akumacombos.com but that stuff is less than inspiring.

Another notebook update with the explanation for rc low fierce, which you guys have probably all seen already. However, the clip for it is the fourth one in the series and the first three were never released. They are available now at the bottom of the page listed under "unsorted experiments" without explanations because it's pretty obvious what's going on.

Maj
06-28-2004, 11:10 AM
Notebook updated with some elaboration on projectile cancels, including two random test clips with lvl2 cancels and one kinda cool C-Ryo combo.

Other than that, i'm trying to do something to get the SRK CvS2 strat forums a bit more active, but it's going hella slow. Click to see. (http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/thread65386.php)

Guess i should just give up entirely and be happy with whatever little progress gets made over the next year, cuz it doesn't look like a timetable of weeks is going to do anything other than get me annoyed. Or maybe people are just sandbagging cuz of evo coming up.

Richard
07-06-2004, 09:46 AM
Well, it's a relief that all this stuff was backed up. I thought we'd lost that huge collection of terminology linked above. I guess having the thing on a different server (ie sonich.com) would be a kind of backup as well.

And speaking of the strat sections, would it be a good idea to get the Joystick Smilies (http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=53871) in place before work begins on that?

What exactly is going on in cvs2fbcancel06 (Steel Rain vs. Morrigan's FB)? Looks like they just trade hits and nothing happens.

And yes, sometimes it IS acceptable to skip weeks instead of recording Raiden's crouching animation. :)

Well, I for one think that shit's pretty interesting, cuz we all know in fights you never keep your eyes open till they dry up.

Maj

Actually i've always kinda wondered if people blink during matches. I think it's pretty feasible to go 30-45 seconds without blinking and then take a break between rounds. But aside from videotaping myself while playing, i can't think of away to test it out. And it wouldn't be much fun reviewing the footage either. Whatever.

Robyrt: In cvs2fbcancel06, Rolento does lvl2 tripwire, then the lvl1 knives connect, then he cancels into Taunt. All of that happens before superfreeze. As soon as he goes into the Taunt animation, he gets hit by Morrigan's fireball. There's a paragraph in the entry talking about it, but i don't really have a solid explanation why he doesn't stay invincible. All of this stuff does happen though, as evidenced by Rolento's meter disappearing and Morrigan's meter filling up due to Rolento's Taunt.

Finally, as for Raiden blinking, when i made the original thread post, i'd never really expected to make multimedia of any of that text. Then when it sort of came down to it, i figured i'd just go through with it anyway. Though i kinda feel bad for any non-English-speaking people that might download those vids.

There are no new clips this week unless you're an SRK Premium Member. Screenshot previews of those clips are listed under "Pending Entries" and as always, they'll be released publically in two weeks.

Richard: That stuff is inaccessible to me. You'll have to get in touch with one of the forum admins. Namely, inkblot, Ponder or MrWizard. I'm sure they'll be much more receptive to the idea a month from now once Evo is over and done with.

I've got a couple more screenshots for you guys. Next week i'll pick up with the video clips again. To be honest, making the notebook screenshots has become my favorite part of this whole project. The entire set has come out looking pretty good i think.

It's not all that hard to figure out what's going on once you've seen that it's possible and given the Hibiki clue.

Also, in case anyone cares, i've uploaded an MPG version of the old Steel Rain video for random minor reasons of my own.

Awaiting the vid, I can see the Hibiki setup, since the start of her dodge run allows her to run through her opponent during the first 3(?) steps. She can even cross over if her opponent is cornered, but since it takes so long for her to stop running, I've never been able to do anything worthwhile afterwards.....=/ You're making me want a premium account so I can look at the actual thread....=p

Maj
07-27-2004, 12:20 AM
The vid will be on the site in two weeks, along with an explanation and everything. The clips are already up in Premium forum as you guessed. I'm pretty glad you replied though. I was beginning to think nobody cared. Sometimes i wonder why it's so difficult to get a discussion going. I'm beginning to think that just me being around makes people lazy.

It's understandable i guess, cuz i wouldn't bother if i knew someone was going to do it for me anyway. I'm not gonna namedrop, but there are some other people that have the same effect on a forum/discussion. Part of the reason i decided on this format was because i figured that aside from trying to help out SRK by encouraging Premium memberships, the 2-week waiting period between releasing a hint/preview and releasing the video would encourage some discussions. Maybe people would share similar findings. Or at least some guesses as to what's going on. Or at least ask some questions. But i'm lucky if one person responds per week.

Anyway i'm not asking for pity or sympathy. I'll keep doing what i'm doing as long as it interests me personally, no matter how people react. I mean, most people seem to like the stuff i come up with and that's something to be happy about. It just honestly baffles me that so few people are willing to share their thoughs after watching a video. I know SRK can be a hostile place, but what's the point of even being here if you don't try to add something to an interesting discussion?

Maybe someday it'll all make sense to me.

RoninChaos
07-27-2004, 12:33 AM
Well, you have to figure it is SRK, a lot of the people here flat out suck at everything, including life. Also, maybe people aren't as interested in CvS2 as they once were. People here want things to be spoon fed to them and if you aren't showing them a way to beat Sagat and Blanka, they aren't interested. Seems like a lot of the people on this board aren't willing to try much out, they just want to be told what to do so they don't have to actually do anything.

Robyrt
07-27-2004, 07:11 AM
Most of us here at SRK (like me) are total scrubs who couldn't figure out most of the notebook stuff if you locked us in a room with just the PS2 for a week. It's like putting up a booth at the Democratic National Convention handing out flyers about Russia's political situation: everybody appreciates your presence, but very few know enough to give any opinion other than "dude that rocks".

Maj
08-02-2004, 09:32 AM
Three new video clips up in the notebook section. The first time i explained the fireball realignment glitch, the clips were really basic just for the sake of clarity. The second time, the clips were a little more interesting, but really just there to prove that it works in CvS as well as CvS2. This is the last time i plan on focusing on that glitch, and these clips are a little more crazy-looking. Don't worry about reading most of the text because it's all really technical and specific explanations. Just read the last paragraph.

Next week i'll have the clips for the backwards running screenshots under the "pending entries" section.

Hm ... finally reaching 50 posts would be a lot more satisfying if this wasn't already my 25th post in the thread.

Hibiki's run might be useful to run away from an opponent as the round is ending. She's invincible for a short while when she starts it right? That should be enough to get through most attacks to escape the corner and quickly get her far away from the opponent.

Why you gotta hate on the Four-Hit Flash Kick (http://www.yojoe.com/filecard/93/guile.shtml)?

Hey if you really live in Japan, can you tell me how big the fan-made DVD/VCD scene is down there? For example, could you find the Sai-Rec CvS2 disc on sale somewhere if you had to? Cuz i've really been trying to find out if anyone in Japan has put out any new crazy combo videos for CvS2 but it's pretty difficult getting info with the language barriers and all. Plus i wouldn't even mind getting legit versions of the old Sai-Rec stuff, even though i saw each of those when they first came out. I wish i'd found a way to buy them then. Robyrt: It's not really coincidental. There's still a lot of interesting stuff to be explored in CvS2, but only because most of it requires one-frame accuracy in one form or another.

Saotome Kaneda: That's too bad. In any case, thanks for taking a look.

This week's clips are just a couple of weird stylish combos that don't require any kind of a setup, but they are still unusable in real matches. I enjoy them though. The weird thing is that i found out about the principle a year ago, while just messing around during an Evo casual match. It just took this long to figure out what i wanted to do with it (and also cuz i was hoping someone else would use it first, but that didn't happen).

Just as fair notice - the notebook updates are going to get a whole lot less regular from here on out. If it's going to happen, it'll happen on a Monday just like before, but i'm going to miss way more weeks than i cover.

8WR (?) - Eight Way Run (Soul Calibur)
B&B - Bread and Butter (i'm not too into this term or this concept)
Corpse hoppers - deadbody otg infinite i guess (i'll add it at some point)
EWGF (?) - Electric Wind GodFist (Tekken)
FRC (is this from GG?) - False/Force Roman Cancel (yeah, from GGXX)
HSDM (is this from KOF?) - Hidden Super Desperation Move (from KoF2k2)
Okizeme/Otedama - wake-up games terms (maybe at some point i'll include these, but i don't think it's a good idea to use foreign language terms for stuff that's perfectly well labeled/defined in english already)
PA (SFIII)
Paint the fence - so ghetto
RBG (?) - Running Bear Grab (gief's 360+k)
Suki cancel (?) - jump cancel into blocking animation (requires an opponent attack on screen and some shady game engine mechanics)
TZW (?) - old school Japanese combo video maker, prominent from early SF2 days up until SFA2; look up www.combovideos.com for two pieces (Ryu and Ken) of one of his legendary ST videos
UOH (III, EX) - universal overhead

I'll add some of those in the next update. By now the general time frames should be obvious. Some of the stuff that i'm not too fond of will eventually get added, but i'd rather define all the "preferable" terminology before getting into the messy/confusing stuff. And also i'm not gonna get too into stuff outside SF because i don't want to lose focus. Listing a bunch of elementary Tekken or even KoF stuff wouldn't accomplish much.

I added three new preview screenshots to the notebook (http://sonichurricane.com/notebook.html) index page. The corresponding clips are available in the Premium Members forum and will be available publically in two weeks along with explanations. The first clip has one OTG, the second has two OTGs, and the third has five OTGs.

You should play 3s.

I like some stuff about 3S but i've just never been too into any of the characters. They should have had Guile, Leona, Galford, and maybe Adon. Heh, in any case, i understand the game well enough to be impressed by impressive videos, but not well enough to make them.

And most of this CvS2 stuff i'm making could have been made a year ago. There's just no incentive to work quicker (or even to work at all) since nobody else is bothering to experiment with the game.

corpse hoppers is what Buk uses to refer to CVS2 dashes that can hop over a downed opponent to cross them up.

Wow. That's the most ghetto term i've ever heard of. No offense to Buk, but i hope that doesn't become popular.

Dear majestor;
well am The beholder, a senoir Moderator In www.ullysis.com
At first i wasnt that Great fan of CvsS2,I am mainly up for Tekken for my entire life and some other fighting Games.....so loving a game like CvsS2 then probably means that it's a great game (Ofcourse that doesnt mean that am a bad player or didnt play any other fighting games!!)

anyways, i am a guile player and i though that am good.......Ofcourse After i saw your site (In ullysis.com we randomly search for Good stuff only and new vids......)
i wanna tell ya that i've never imagined that guile could be that person you did stuff with!
When i saw yar vids i was like WTF!! O_O, are these possible.....and ofcourse after preforming them,i've discovered that your not great, you above perfect!! your insane.
Majestor, i admire your skills and i think your one of the best players that i've ever seen and specially guile player.

Thanks to Blaze who told me to post in here, and hey your site is one of the Best site vids i've ever seen....

There's a new reference article up. It's a very early draft and later revisions will have a number of changes as more and more content is added, but it's a pretty decent basic framework right now. A lot of people ask questions about notation so i figured i'd write up a guide for the universal stuff. I'll add more game-specific stuff as i go.

Beholder:
I'm glad you enjoyed it all and i appreciate the feedback. I hope your site is successful. However, it seems kind of empty right now. Aside from being just another forum, what does it provide? There are a lot of people trying to start their own forums and they aren't providing anything that SRK doesn't already do. I know you guys ran a tournament in Europe and your international turnout was very impressive. Aside from that, what does Ullysis represent?

Notebook (http://sonichurricane.com/notebook.html) OTG videos and (unpolished) explanation posted. I may revise it slightly later on in the week to sharpen up the grammar/spelling/readability. I admit the writeup is a little rushed this time.

You sure this is the unpolished version? Nice write up.

At one point in the article you mention that 'little can be done to avoid neutral state following a throw', however, if applicable, what methods have you found to avoid going into neutral state after a throw?

Thanks. Although it isn't that difficult to explain/understand, there's a lot of interesting history behind this so i figured some people might be entertained. Since SRK caters to a lot of players that don't specialize in CvS2, i'm sure many don't know all of the details.

If you scroll down to the way bottom of the Notebook page, cvs2fbcancel02.wmv and cvs2fbcancel03.wmv are two examples of how throws can be canceled (command throws only). But it takes a complicated setup and anything that requires overlaying two complicated setups isn't likely to be possible.

As for the unpolished bit, there's a couple things that need to be changed and explained further. For example, that Yama really can OTG off his lvl2 ground slam variation but can only cancel after all of the ground slams are done. Also, that Kyo's Flashing Slash doesn't need to connect to activate the OTG thing.

Revised it last night. There's so much namedropping going on in that essay.

So ... anybody try this yet? It's pretty easy to do a basic non-fancy version. From point blank range, jump back with A-Kyo to establish distance. Activate CC, do QCF+MP, HCB+P, P so that only the last one connects, then cancel into DF+HK xx DP+HK, then cancel that into another DF+HK when you land from the DP+HK to get another OTG. If you set it to Infinite Meter, you can keep doing OTG's for as long as you like using different moves.

Added a few random clips exploring fireball juggle potentials. You can find them under "unsorted experiments" at the bottom of the Notebook (http://www.sonichurricane.com/notebook.html) page. Just look by dates for the most recent.
