i know this will never happen, but it'd be awesome if they re-made this game in 2D. or even 3D now with todays graphics. ah, that game sure sucked hard but it had some of the best character artwork i've seen in games.
whatever happened to the company that developed it? i think it was Takara.

Its a strong series with a cult following. You never know what could happen with it in the future. Last game released for it I think was the one based on Eiji's son, or something like that on PS.

The last game was actually based on Sho's son, forgot his name. He was taken in by Eiji who out of nowhere becomes the head of his own killer tech company and after that the characters got weirder and weirder. The game had a team system where there were three people to a team, of course there were characters assigned to specific teams based on story. Sho's son teamed up with Kayin's daughter and some new guy named Rook Castle. I wouldn't mind playing the game for kicks and giggles, too bad it was only released in Japan.:(
Toshinden is SWEET! Aside from some major ballancing issues, it was hella' pimp. Dude, you can fucking buffer inputs, like DP's, then like dash, dash and jump, etc. then execute. You could even buffer shit while in mid move, dash, then execute. I'm not talking like 3 for 4 frame buffers, either; I'm talking long periods of nuetral time. It was hella sweet.
You could also do some SICK juggles BAT3. Though, to this day I still don't know wtf is guaranteed and what isn't, lol.

Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for PS1 is the only game I'd go back and play. The game had such a bad-ass soundtrack (Eiji's theme) and I really liked some of the backgrounds in the game (like Eiji's, Mondo's, and Rungo's stages). Out of all the Toshindens, it was the closest to a true Arcade-style game, and it was before the system got all crazy like in Toshinden 3. I think Capcom even had a hand in making the game (it was in the credits).
A few months ago, I bought Battle Arena Toshinden 2 PLUS for the japanese Playstation (it's BAT2 with some minor tweaks; think of it as "BAT2 #RELOAD") and I also got Toshinden 4. I just wanna say that Toshinden 4 was pretty terrible, but it was worth it to see how the series went out. Had a nice intro, at least.
I wish they'd pick Toshinden back up; I can't believe they'd drop everything after all they went through. I just don't like the fact that all those bad-ass characters like Eiji, Kayin, Sofia, and Duke are never going to be seen again. Out of all the "Ryu & Ken" rip-offs, Eiji and Kayin had to be my favorite.
I'm missing the hell out of them.

I remember some of the moves in the first one, just sounded really strange, Eiji dragon punch thing sounded like "Cyyber rubber duck" and some other guy had a move that sounded like "step in lake" thought the game was cool aside from the stupid inputs for some of the moves.
Which one had the guy with the chainsaw, 3? maybe that was the last one I played, I can remember it haveing lots of chars

Aw man, why did you have to remind me about that!???
There was also a Toshinden game where everyone had giant heads and tiny bodies, like Pocket Fighter or Virtua Fighter Kids. And a Toshinden puzzle game too.

Me too, but I didn't think it was terrible. Seems like they ripped off a lot of stuff from the SFII anime though.
I still use PC BAT1 for its redbook audio, but that's about it. I don't think I could stand the gameplay of any of the BAT games these days.

My brother and I loooved Toshinden 1. It was the only PS game I owned for a long time and boy did we play it to death. Eiji, Kayin, Sho, Gaia, ect where some pretty cool characters. The music was great too. I remember when it was new, I think Ultimate MK3 was the last of the big name games out, so Toshinden was like a revolution. Too bad the series got worse with each game.
Speaking of Toshinden, anybody have the theme from part 3? I was never able to find that but I loved it.

BAT 1 was the shit that and Ironman & XO Man of war where the only 2 ps games i owned around that time
Vermillion owns you for free.
I'm also interested in getting some mp3's and some official artwork to this game. Fighter's generation is down, so any other sites where I can go to?
And yeah, I could almost imagine this game in 2D, having similar graphic style as Guilty Gear. It'd be sweet.

Personally, I always thought Toshinden 1 felt a bit smoother than Toshinden 2 in play. But I gotta admit, Toshinden 2 has one of the best soundtracks of all friggin' time. Ever since I ripped it from my (original, big box!!) Toshinden 2 disc, it hasn't left my iPod.

Yeah the music in the entrie toshinden series was great. i have all the soundtracks besides the dance remake and subaru.
In subaru i hear eiji turns evil, and vermillion is back in it as well and hes the leader of the orginization. I pretty much had fun with all 3, but i had the most fun playing toshinden 3, the shit in that game was just nuts. People fight with chainsaws and guns, it was fucking crazy.

BAT 2 was in the NCSU arcade back in 97-98 I believe. Capcom released it.
To me Toshinden was one of the predecessors of the Guilty Gear series in spirit. Only problem was they ruined it with 3 and Subaru.
I'd love to see a modern remake done in the KOF:MI engine (modified)

They actually did make a 2D Toshinden, well kinda, it was the Game Boy port. Oddly enough it was actually decent, pretty similar to Takara's Neo Geo ports of KOF and World Heroes 2 Jet, well it was made by Takara after all.

Itīs funny that you talked about this because 5 minutes ago I was checking several soundtracks from these series:
Battle Arena Toshinden (PSX)
Battle Arena Toshinden - Techno Groove
Battle Arena Toshinden - Remix
Battle Arena Toshinden - Tribute to Gamingforce
Battle Arena Toshinden - Before Stage - Vol.1
Battle Arena Toshinden 2
Battle Arena Toshinden 3
Battle Arena Toshinden Remix (Sega Saturn)
Battle Arena Toshinden Subaru
I still have my original CD from Saturn and that game was really cool (the gameplay was cool and the soundtrack from the final boss - cupido --> was and still is the best crazy/amazing soundtrack ever made in a game)
btw: Sho was my favorite character in the Sega Saturn remix version (double fireball) :karate:

TS3- David shooting girls (Miss Til, Rachel etc) and attacking them with a chainsaw was twisted.
The final enemy didn't have a weapon- he used street fighter moves. :karate:
In story mode, heroes would only fight villians and vice versa.
Makes sense.

David was just too pimp. And remember Two Steps (I think that was his name) the Michael Jackson ripoff guy!? lol he was great.

I loved the bosses in BAT 1 and 2. Gaia (lol..Gaia) was tight as hell if not really hard. Uranus was pretty original. And MAster was too easy.

{currently listening to Chaos' theme} I love being able to listen to the music straight out of the CD.
Speaking of Master, was Master a 'he' or a 'she'? I was told they had mistranslated Master as a 'she' when they brought BAT2 stateside.
Wow, more love than I was expecting for the BAT games. I just wanted to post to say that Battle Arena Toshinden: Remix for the Sega Saturn was really fun. Cool intro and cool story mode, even though I haven't played it in 6 years. I remember it fondly. I hear BAT: URA, the other Saturn Toshinden game, was terrible.

1 was ok,2 was kinda sloppy and 4......well I rate BAT4 as not only the worst Toshinden but one of the worst Fighting games ever made! Right up there with SF the Movie and Primal Rage! lol
I wish ppl actually played cause Toshindens a hot series, its just not popular...

I liked how each BAT game had secret moves, like Fo Fai's aforementioned fart, hell, I even remember the motion to it! It was like WK, WS, HS, HK, B, F, B, F, HS+HK. Discovering the secret moves was fun and rewarding. I especially liked Eiji's double fireball move.
Out of all of them, I like 3 the most, even though most of the hidden characters are just clones of others. But I liked Leon, Judgment, and Adam.
However, I thought the first two games were way too choppy to play. Moves like Duke's Southern Cross only hit twice (even though the move was supposed to hit like five times) and Eiji's flipping slash move in the second game almost never hit.
Toshinden Subaru (the fourth game), well, I only played it once, and I don't remember anything about it, except that I think that Eiji was kinda old and was in this ninja outfit.
Has anyone here played Toshinden URA for Sega Saturn?

Hrmmm I remember some of the super seekrit moves in the first game were hard as fuck.
anyway as for cupid cuz i think someone asked about her, umm she was pretty boring, you just had to liek not lose a round o rsomething in the saturn version and then after you beat sho, you and her have a "conversation" though it was more of you say something and then she says the same thing more or less she says to everyone else. And then you fight cuz well you have nothing better to do shrug. It didnt really add anything to the story other then that she had cool music lol.

The Toshinden series wasn't that bad. I only played 1 and 3 (1 is MUCH better, IMO). I actually used to have 1 for the PS and the Saturn (they are pretty different. Character select screen is different, sounds are different, etc.), as well as the Game Boy version. I had the anime as well (don't know what happened to it). My favorites were Eiji (Ryu of game), Kayin (Ken of game), and Sho (Akuma of game). They need to bring the series back, rather with new, cell-shaded 3D graphics or hi-res 2D graphics. Man, I miss the series.

Yeah Toshinden 3 is definetly the best one even though yeah the hidden characters were clones but not entirely. Like Duke for instance has no otg's except by using his gem, but Balga does!
Chaos is slow and Schultz has instantanious dash! but yeah little things like that. As far as Toshinden Subaru I totally disacknowledge that as a Toshinden game, I remember playing it with my friend for like half an hour, after that we were like "turn this shit off" and put T3 back in!
Horrible!!!!!
I've played URA too and once again it was so bad that it got very little play, and the only time I "would" play was to spoof and exploit how bad of a game it was like the horrific voice overs!
SUCKS!!!!
Even though I know there's little to few T3 players out there I wouldnt mind playing for tourny or money!!

Uhh abhi, you either just started playing, or had no one good to play for you to come up with that one! No offense!
Kayin is faster than Eiji, does more damage than Eiji, has launcher auto strings that lead to more damagin combos, and his gems(ground and air) are 10X's better than Eiji's. Kayin's air gem, if done correctly can mix up the camera angle making it unblockable and do a 10-12 hit juggle on the ceiling for about 40% damage if not more, and you should know in Toshinden thats alot of damage, thus not only making him over Eiji but ranking him hig-mid tier status!
Trust me man I've been playing the game way before it came out american and still kinda play it today!
btw: Kayin's BAT 1 theme is Hot! And Eiji's BAT 2 theme is good as well!

Sofia was hot (not the BAT2 intro chick)
So, as far as juggles go, what exactly IS guaranteed in regards to the BAT3 system? Can't you like air recover and wall tech? What exactly are those situations? I was always like wtf when doing combos because i never knew what was legit.

I played 1 for a little while, but 3 and the GB title were the hookers. I can't believe I'm not the only one who actually liked the GB game (Heck, next to KoF '96, it was the best GB-fighter out there, MK2 and KI close behind). And sure, "evil clones" is hardly original (see "Tekken 1-2"), but they turned around and made it work rather well, IMHO. And who couldn't have fun tearing up "pros" with a little girl (Naru)? :D
Yeah, the world needs another BAT game. Something with alternate weapons, ala SoulCalibur 2, combined with TK5's "card" system. (and Super Move commands a little more... well, just fun to input and not so copyed from each other. Kayin is the only one from BAT3 that had any alteration from the Danger Attack standard, and that was pressing "K" instead of "P". )
Also, I've seen only one better PSOne intro in a game, and that was MegaMan X4. (j/k, I actually mean "Soul Blade"...)

So, as far as juggles go, what exactly IS guaranteed in regards to the BAT3 system? Can't you like air recover and wall tech? What exactly are those situations? I was always like wtf when doing combos because i never knew what was legit.
Well alot of juggles are techable, some are techable after like 5 or 6 hits(in the air), ceiling juggles are untechable. For instace a ceiling juggle thats untechable.... (with Kayin) slanted Strong Slash 2x's or (with Sofia) foward+ Strong Kick 2x's. an untechable air juggle with Zola would be down+Strong Kick(stuns opponent), neutral Strog Kick, Strong Kick/Light Kick(auto combo), Star Whipper(Sofias Rattle Snake).
An air juggle that can only be teched after a certain amount of hits would be, (With Chaos) Jump, instantly hit strong slash just off the ground, jump strong slash, repeat 7x's, before they fall out.
Wall techs are usually done when an opponent reverse attack you(back+ SS or SK) then if you hit the wall press WS+HS, or to just bounce down, WK+SK.
I hoped that was "somewhat helpful" to you!

Who has seen Toshinden the movie, man I remember when that came out and I ordered it from VIZ abck in the late 90's, man Eiji and Kayin both doing special moves against Chaos together and using each other special moves and both at the same time doing a double dragon ( forgive the pun )

Yeah I have the uncut version on VHS, Sofia shower scene and all :)
I loved the OAV(OVA?) of Toshinden, the characters all looked like they did in BAT2, but they made Ellis way too skinny and small. Duke's English voice was kinda weird too.

I use to have that Toshinden movie, I vaguely remember it though. But I do remember Sofia was brainwashed by Uranus and she fought Eiji, but Eiji held back. It was actually kinda funny cause what it looked like was, she threw a thunder ring!, and Eiji blocked it. Then she did a guard crush Aurora Revolution which launched Eiji, then she followed up with a Thunder Ring which juggled him in the air! That was hot!
I think there were only two episodes though.
abhi: Forget about Kayin, and Eiji, its all about Sho and Vermillion!

I don't remember the first toshinden having the CD jewel case. I remember it having those big cardboard boxes that PS used to use.
and ay, you got Zero Divide on that shadowhaxor site too. awesome! it had some cool music as well. this brings back a lot of nostalgia. ah damn, THE ART OF DESTRUCTION. i loved this stage music for the final boss. even the hidden phalanx games music stages is on there. as for ZD2, I don't remember the 2nd game ever coming out though...

It's not hard to tell from my user name that I was a fricking huge fan of this series back in the day - the character designs were something special.
Vermillion's easily one of the coolest villains ever created, and Sho's stage was simply awe inspiring back then.
Man. An up to date 2D version of Toshinden would be a dream come true. Or even a new 3D one if Tamsoft handed the reins to someone who knew their stuff - Toshinden 4 (Subaru) was a bit of a joke.

Wow, a Toshinden fan base, woulda thunk it? Ironically, I found the first Toshinden (which was also the first game I bought with my preordered PS1) used for $1.99 a couple of days ago, so I picked it up, along with Tekken and SoulBlade. And I have to say, I'm a bit surprised at how playable it is. It's not exactly VF4: Evo, but it's an intersting diversion at least.
Believe it or not, the major "groundbreaking" achievement for Battle Arena Toshinden at the time was the ability to move left and right on the playing field, as the other 3-D fighters of its time (VF2, Tekken) were strictly linear. I remember the game mags freaking out because of this. The second game was an improvement, but the third felt like a bit of a mess to me. The ability to switch between 30fps and 60fps was a damn good idea though.
Anyway, there was an absolutely wicked Ellis combo for the original game, sadly I can no longer remember it. Maybe I'll check some FAQs and see if I can track it down.
