Shippo, everyone here (except for you, me, Bloody Youkai, and 5 or so others) thinks that this game is just a masher, and that you are automatically screwed if your opponent is in beast form. In short, they are Bloody Roar scrubs. This series kicks all kinds of ass. You need anything like Beast Drive set-ups, combos, vids? I'm your connection...

Bloody Roar is still the best IMO. Compared to the sequels...
Of course, Ive played them all besides 3/Extreme, so whatever. Even if it has a more balanced beast mode than say, 4... ugh... I would probably think it dumb... masher isnt the problem... its easy combos into guardbreak/super tha makes the game wierd... that and they still havent brought back the ape with the tophat

*RESURRECTION!!!*
ahaaaaa! Oh yes, I now have Bloody Roar: Primal Fury. It took such a long time because the game has been non-existent here. I had given up my search, and just lucked up and found a used copy yesterday. I've been playing it for hours ever since.
and yeah, I've noticed that BR fans are an extreme minority here.
*Kohryu is easy to win with in Survival mode. If I can get distance between myself and the opponents...I can just shoot that rocket arm attack over and over....the cpu characters rarely block this, and it will catch them when they try to run in. Damn this thread is old as hell.

it's broken but it's a crapload of fun it's the only 3d type fighter for me that maintains that 2dtype feel I still like tekken tho but It would be nice if it were more like BR

oh yeah...I wish I could watch some vids of this game....but the combo of 56k and being on an ancient G3 Mac pretty much kills my chances of seeing video on the internet.
The Gfaqs boards for these games are barely alive. The Primal Fury board only has 4 topics!
I forgot, what's the difference between Primal Fury and the BR that's on Xbox...besides the new CG cinemas? (*I prefer the anime cinemas of Primal Fury, btw.)
Speaking of those....these characters and the story scenario have some good potential...it's a shame they didn't really get into the plot much at all. I know story isn't really a priority in a fighting game....but I'd like the endings to be a little longer and explain more...
that half-beast girl...the one with the long sleeves...she seems really good with her superior speed and recovery. Also very combo-friendly...it seems like most of her attacks link up naturally. Cute, too. I'd hit it of course if she were real.
My friend is in for a rude awakening now. I even called to warn him that the tables will finally turn for good now that I have my own copy of the game. He's going to get shut down hard next time I come over there. In the near future, Nick Cannon marries Mariah Carey. Ain't that a bitch?

Better than VF? That's a bit much to say. I guess it depends on what defines 'better' for you.
I like the Bloody Roar games. I haven't played the two PS2 games (Bloody Roar 3 and 4), but I enjoyed the others. The game does lend itself to mashing; it's hard to argue that it doesn't. But, as with any other fighter, you don't have to play the game that way. (and it's a lot more fun when you don't).
Gado is my favorite character (for obvious reasons). Oh, and that gorilla with the top hat is Greg... he hasn't been in any game since the original. And yeah, he owned.

Greg and Mitsuko fused together to give us Stun.
It's true.
Don't play BR4 for any long period of time, it will make you hate the series even more since it's turn from BR2. The story makes no fucking sense, the new guard systems are broken, the new characters(except for Ryoho w/Mana) are disgustingly overpowered, and a lot of the new moves in Career Mode have no practical use in a match. Half of the unlockable Beast Drives are ass, and don't even work on a standing opponent in the middle of the biggest arena in the game. I could go on....

What do you guys think of Bloody Roar, the first game? I found Bloody Roar yesterday at my local game shop at the mall just for $9.99. I should I get it? It's either that I get this game or I get a usb device so I can use my PS2 pad in order to play MBR.

It is a little uglier, but the system feels a lot better. It's more kinetic, and there's sweet light trails behind your attacks. The last boss, Uriko...well, the game goes from Tekken meets The Howling to Tekken meets The Howling...meets Resident Evil. The whole game is just super-fucking fun. Everything has more impact than in the later games, and Stun and Jenny's sorry asses aren't there, with their watered-down, stolen movesets. The stages are sweet...way better than BR2's. There's more blood, the voices don't suck as bad as the later games. Trust me, this feels like 2 on steroids minus Beast Drives. Instead of just knocking people down, you send them slamming into walls some 14 feet away. It's just, as Gamfan called it, "Hyper-kinetic". And the art gallery is the shit, too.

Okay, so I just bought Bloody Roar yesterday haven't had the chance to play it yet, so can anyone tell me what Beast Rave is and why is there one whole button to for it? Also, if possible, can anyone tell me how game-breaking Guard Escape is in this game? The whole description of it that the game booklet gives me makes me think that it must be broken since all you have to do is press up while blocking.
Bloody Roar is hella sick...I used to play it alot....i mean alot..that game has so many combo options especially in part 2's custom menu....u can put on an option called any cancel point...and stop in the middle of combos and then continue with random patterns into super...and "grid mode" was only in part 2....basically I played only 2 and 3...4 is kinda so so...who do you guys like to use and which versions were your fav???

umm... isnt that thier name for "teching"
and beast mode activation is one button, but in beast mode you get another attack button with it. Which are usually more powerful and have to do with their beast form like the rhino charging at someone or the lion pounce / rip out their jugular
oh wait, beast rave just like... makes you faster/stronger yet your beast bar depletes over time to 0. Which makes you turn back into huiman form after getting hit
Edit : Dr. B - The first one, imo.
Cmon, it had a monkey with the tophat...

Well actually, the booklet says this Guard Escape is actually sidestepping. I'm just asking how effective is in this game, like in SC2.
As for teching, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. There is a safe-fall (kick + punch) if that's what you mean. I don't remember there being any kind of teching of throws in this series.
Monkey? The booklet says the guy's name is Greg, and he has a former Ringmaster...haha. What's up with that Fox/Hans guy? He seems a lot like Vega but looks more like a woman. Probably just some ploy to get girls to play this game.

Like everyone else pretty much said it's all about part 1 and 2. I played BR a lot when it first came out...game was fun playing with all my friends. Then when part 2 came out thats when I really got down and dirty with the game. To answer Dr.B's question I mainly used Alice (the rabbit girl) my main, Uriko (the cat girl half human) and the mole guy (forgot his name) in Part 2. In part 1 I used everyone pretty much, though in part 2 I did as well. I used to have a friend that was a beast with Stun in BR2, also another friend who used Long (the wolf guy) really well in BR2. But besides that it was all fun to play back then to play with anyone. I need to get me copies of these games for sure. Alright later all.

..who do you guys like to use and which versions were your fav???
BR3 (PS2/Arcade version, not that Primal Fury/Xtreme crap) is my favorite gameplay wise as long no one uses the hidden characters. I think BR2 is cool too and I think everyone like it cause it had better presentation like comparing Alpha3 to Alpha2.
My favorites were Yugo (wolf), Shina (cheetah), Bakaryu (mole), and Stun (insect).
Heard Shenlong was top tier in Japan when BR3 was popular. I can see why with his Six-Circle Combo system, fast pokes, and weird backturn fighting style. I would have like to play as ShenLong more but never picked up on his Six-level Combo ring system enough to make him effective. I mean I like the game and all but not super serious enough to try to remember that crap. Yugo's Free Combo System was much easier to use and just as effective if you picked the right moves to use during the cancel points.

I'm lovin BR Extreme right now(I wish they had an option to let you choose between anime scenes and cg, but ah well). My fav character is Cronos, his fighting style rocks imo. He's not very powerful in human form, but he has very good juggling abilities(not nearly as good as Uriko's, but pretty good), he's fast, he has counters that come in handy, he can drain your beast bar and add it to his own, his penguin form is pretty tough(it's weak, but very hard to hit), and the Phoenix is godlike, gamebreaking even imo. You can do sooo many insane combos in Phoenix form, it's fucking nuts. And his third beast drive is very damaging if you hit with it. Sadly people usually hate Cronos, due to him being rather um... "elegant" and because he touches uriko's face in her ending. he's my fav character tho.
And BR1 fucking rocks so hard... the impact of the moves and everything. I even remember how sometimes if you hit an opponent, they'd double over and vomit or cough up blood from the force of the attacks. It was a cool feature imo, made it seem so much more brutal. And I really miss Fox, he was the best. Jenny is ok, but it still sucks they stole Fox's moves, and gave them to Jenny and Xion.
And anyone here use Uranus? She's pretty fucking broken... altho, she has poor defense, since she dies kinda fast. And her hyper beast has very poor defense, she dies so fucking fast, you really gotta be careful. They fucked her up in BR4 imo, she used to be extremely fast, she feels so damn sluggish in 4. And am I the only one who actually prefers Cronos over Reiji? I don't hate Reiji, it's just I liked Cronos' fighting style and beast forms and overall character design more. Reiji looks more like a reject Tekken design with a beast form.
And yeah, Nagi is hot, i'd hit her ass HARD. Sadly she's also an uber cheap bitch. Fucking cheap ass counter evade, uber fast, and easily linkable attacks, very easy to juggle with, and an unblockable beast drive that is hard to avoid. Goddamn...

Ok,alot of people complain about the game is broken.....well GG was broken,MVC2 and CVS1&2 are broken (to some people). Thing is alot of people are afraid to try new shit. Bloody Roar 1 & 2 are awesome to me. Yeah you can button mash and get away with it, but i've seen people do that in SF 3rd strike and win. I like the enviroments, the characters and just the fact that it was different but good. And i played with on of the most technical guys in the game....LONG/Shen long. The game is good but gets over shadowed by he rest....i can still see long whoop LAW's ass anyday.

Bloody Roar 3 is the only one I take seriously, so it's pretty much my favorite.
Bloody Roar 1 started something cool, part 2 just made it better, and then 3 made it a fast-paced slugfest (back when it first came out, it was one of the fastest games I'd ever played on PS2).
After that, I felt the series was getting dumbed down TERRIBLY with the introduction of Bloody Roar: Primal Fury/Extreme...my reasons being:
-rapidly tapping the Guard button to "dodge" attacks
-Forward+Guard being a throw on BOTH Standing and Crouching opponents
-the redone, ever so crappy "Hyper Beast" system which was the most broke shit EVER.
-more and more and MORE button-mashing Mid & Low mix-ups (from characters like Uriko, Jenny, and Xion)
-shitty story
Now I don't know if any of that crap had anything to do with the fact that it was on Gamecube, but I have to admit the game has some nice graphics, GREAT stages, and one of the best Bloody Roar soundtracks ever. Then Bloody Roar 4 came to PS2. We had the same damn game, but with some more dumb problems:
-removal of the "Air Chase" system (you can only get it with your broke-ass Custom character)
-removal of the "Double Crouch"
-the new "Hold Guard to enter EVASION MODE" or whatever the hell that was.....system....
-more and more and MORE button-mashing Mid & Low mix-ups (from characters like Uriko, Jenny, Xion, and Reiji)
-shitter story
After that, I was like "FUCK IT" and sorta gave up on the whole series ever getting better. But I really do hope they pick the series back up, because it had potential, and it had a bad-ass cast of characters. Yugo is pretty much one of my favorite video game characters ever, and I really liked Alice, Bakuryu, Long, and Shenlong.
As far as memories, I'm sticking with the old-ass Bloody Roar 3; it was slightly more techincal, least scrubby (even though all of the Bloody Roar games were basically scrubby), and had one of the better storylines in the series...but I still like the entire Bloody Roar series as a whole. I miss it already.
And people who think Uranus is fair are crackheads.

I've only really played br3. I liked it. I liked it even more after i watched some japanese match videos. I played with shenlong, alice, uriko and sometimes batgirl. The game can be technical and I think that after a certain amount of time scrubs/mashers just stop winning. To beat someone who can't play, you only really need 1-2 hits. All the resets and combos take care of the rest. This is especially true with alice/uriko/shenlong (only cuz i know how to play with them..prolly true for all).
I would love to discuss strategy, but this game is dead.

Oh, and Fox is considered male in the US version, but in PAL manuals it's a woman. Weirdness.

Mashers get beaten easily cause they will usually bust out the ugliest attack string that has a lot of lag on it so it's easy to punish them.
Edit: Ukiro mashers were weak since she had little to no range. So while they mash away you just backstep and counter with a good poke or the universal guard break (absorbs high/mid attacks) for the counter hit. The only true masher character was Uranus's human form, she was actually too fast to react to while guarding and most of her attacks had knockdown properties on it that gave her access to easy juggles (like the ones the CPU does, but human players can come up with much worse).

but back when playing it, it wasnt so bad. with so many over the top things and ringouts not being that hard to do, it wasnt so much of a real fighter as just a fun action game.
Man, I really liked its cool modes... something they should have kept. Ability to make the stages dark, walls invisible, trancelike, invisible lifebars...
just had you and the other guy off in the distance... and had to beat the crap out of them until they were dead... it had enough stuff to keep it interesting. And on the whole a good diversity of characters, silly or otherwise. Ahh, now I wanna go find BR and play it...

Ok, I really do love talking about what br3 had at high play. It may have been a bit broken but fun. Ok, alice had a chain after a launcher that did like 80% damage. And you really can't escape it. I mean you could but only by dodging in the air. She also had an air throw to try and tack on extra damage after combos (you could escape air throws but difficult and confusing). Creates guessing game in the air as well.
Shenlong was disgusting (or atleast how i played him lol). The biggest deal of damage was dealt by getting some launcher out. Hopefully one that can't be recovered. Then jump and do p, k, b string. If you want you can do again, but can be air dodged...not blocked though. The best though is to run under them. They will most likely recover. This is the greatness. If they recover they can't even block because their back is to you. Pressing b will make u do that back move with shenlong that does crazy damage. Or you could mix it up and do something low so they mistime a dodge. They can't even really attack you. You could let them land during their recovery, and they will land with back to you. If you do 2k (i think), you can do 66b after and that launches them again. Unblockable, difficult to dodge and insane damage.
Uriko was similar when she launches somebody but she had another combo that was just sick. Go into cat mode QCF + b i believe and do k (i think its k, but it might be soemthing else...she hits low and it puts them in stun). Then press up + b. Now they been comboed into air without recovery. Do b, b, b (maybe one more b at end don't remember..its a 4 hit combo, but the last button press does 2 hits). At this point they will bounce of the ground, again without recovery and then QCF + b again. And press up + b instantly. Rinse and repeat. There is one place they can recover, between last two hits before rebounce. But its difficult. I say do it 1 or 2 times and then on relaunch just jump, do kk, then run under mix it up.

You're talking to a person who is so much into BR that he can pretty much recite each story from each game
Anyway, I own all the BR games except for BR4 (which is hella hard to find here) and Extreme. In number one, I use Alice, Yugo and Greg, in number two, I use Long, Stun, Bakuryu, and Uriko.
Jenny plays much like Fox from the first game (Fox was a WOMAN, not a man in the JP version), and I never liked Fox, so I never use Jenny.
Number three, well, I use pretty much everyone. Except for Uranus. I'll have to play the game again later to post some combos.
And for all y'all that think this game is a button-masher, put any one of the BR games on its highest difficulty and try to beat it by button-mashing. You'll probably only get thru one fight at the most; just think what would happen if you went up against an experienced player.

Yugo made me love "Low Punches" that trip opponents off their feet in Fighting games, such as Steve Fox's d/b+2 (Tekken), Dudley's d+MK (SFIII), and Bass Armstrong's d/b+P (DoA). I still consider Yugo "The King of the Low Punch".

Yugo was one of the few (or only?) characters in the game with a great B&B that he could access anytime he finds an opening. It was very fast, damaging (like 40-60% depending if you were human or not and if the opponent was as well) and more importantly it was guranteed once you land the first hit.
It was something like PP, qcf+P, qcb+K (somersault) in human form and in beast form BBPP, qcf+P, qcb+K (haven't played in a while so that may be off). It was obviously better in beast form cause of the extended range from the two B attacks. You could use that B&B to punish a lot things. Also G-canceling his qcb+P after a G-canceled backstep was good mixing up with his command throw, doing f+Ps (his fastest mid I believe), letting the attack finish for counter-hit (which launches) or whatever since he dashed right back into the opponent's face with high/mid autoguard and was quick enough to counter hit most guard break attempts (if not, you could just G-cancel earlier to block normally against them).
Besides the damaging B&B and access to King of Breaker super (which was great to just toss out randomly sometimes since you could G-cancel it on block), I like Yugo's human form better cause human characters juggles opponents lower than when in beast form so it was harder for opponent's to escape juggles.

heh, speaking of music...I love it in Primal Fury(the one for GC)....I've never played the other BR games though. I actually just recorded the Stage Select theme a few minutes ago to my computer.(*run the sound from the tv's headphone jack to my comp's mic. jack = delicious mp3! )
And that Evil Lab you fight Cronos in is one of my favorite stages ever in a fighting game. The music is nice there too, especially with Cronos' classic villain-quote: "You'll NEVER defeat me!"

Co-sign. That stage is the fucking best stage ever in a fighting game period. The ambience, everything, and the music is awesome! I actually bought the music cd and ripped all the tracks to my pc, I fucking love that music. My favs are:
Evil Laboratory
Back Alley
Indian palace
Chaos Laboratory
Am I the only one who thinks the music in the Evil Lab sounds kinda familiar? certain parts of it sound familiar, like the song seems like a remix with stuff from tv shows in it, can't quite explain it... It's my absolute fav theme tho, it actually makes you feel like you're in an Evil Lab  :badboy:
And Cronos has some of the best quotes imo, my favs are:
When he beats you for a round and poses while saying "get back up!"
When he beats you with a time over and poses, saying "You okay?" in this cocky tone
Cronos is my fav character, lol. Followed by Uranus and Xion. personally, I think Cronos is pretty top tier in this game, he has some good combos. He's not very powerful in human form, but he's fast and light, and can juggle. You can juggle his rapid punch move, do it once, it scores three hits, but instead of pushing punch or kick to finish it, pause for a sec, do it again before the opponent hits the ground, then pause a sec, then do it one last time, then finish with the punch or kick, it's a nice litle juggle. Also, this:
P,P,P,qcb+K(cancel just right at the first hit of the kick),P,K,K,qcf+P,pause and then qcf+P again and finish with punch or kick, or if you wnat, you can try finishing in penguin mode by pushing B after the rapid punches instead of P or K. It's a nice little combo if you pull it off. Don't even get me started on his Phoenix form. Phoenix is the best hyperbeast in the game imo. Extremely fast, sick combo, juggling and canceling ability(not to mention it has a fire shield) pretty damn tough. Also, the Phoenix looks fucking badass, a big tall ass bird looking all evil with red eyes, 4 wings(crazy!), not to mention everytime it touches you or walks, flames come off its body :wow:
What are your fav beast/hyperbeast forms, and why?
