BEWARE OF SEARCH ASSISTENT.
yes, i spelled it right, search assistEnt. it will hijack the fuck out of your home page and you can't change it. my home page is:
res://kjhbp.dll/index.html#96676
and i have no idea on earth how to get rid of it. no one seems to know wtf is wrong. *sigh*
and because i make avatars for half of the world, i only have 135mb of space left on my comp, meaning i can't do system restore.
*shakes head*
fuck...:fury:
OMFSHIT motoki i have the same shit... i checked my configuration->software and I found three crazy programs which I cant delete because they say they cannot find the uninstaller on some link...
3 programs are:
Home Search Assistent
Shopping Wizard
Hmm isnt in my list anymore, but it had some MSN logo.... The name of it was MSN Search Extender or something
And when you try to search something in google it opens another page or your IE just crashes X_x
Ow and I know I didnt do something wrong, because I never browse outside the websites I always go to, and shit like that
And Ad-Aware and Spybot dont find them

my computer randomly turns its self off a couple times a day. At first i thought it was the overheating cpu but i got more fans and a new heatsink. But the problem still happens.
Any suggestions
so I was responding to a post when SRK decided to turn back the clock on us. anyways, I took the time to write all this out so I figure i'd post it anyways.

LOL alright... I'm gonna save you a load of money by helping out here. Unless you strictly want a capture card, I would buy a tv tuner card, which can also act as a capture card. (If you only want a capture card, you need a decent computer to encode fast enough and make sure the card has stereo audio). The tv tuner will be cheaper than the AIW's anyways and encode much better. I don't know about you but it's very useful for me because I can watch tv and play my games on my computer (at college) without lugging an extra tv around.
There are basicly two types of tv cards, those with hardware encoding and those without. If you got the money, you want one with hardware encoding. There's really only two tv tuners I recommend:
Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP Expert Edition (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-180&depa=0) (<== link). about $50
It's got a 10bit encoder (as opposed to the Deluxe version's 8bit encoder) as well as S-video in, fm radio, and a nice remote which can be programmed to be used for anything else. This does NOT have a hardware encoder so unless you really want to save money, I would not get it unless you have the fastest of computers (or you won't be able to do anything while you are encoding).
Next is the Hauppauge WinTV PVR250 (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=15-116-602&depa=0). (<== link) about $130
This baby has hardware encoding and barely takes up any cpu when it records tv or other video. It also includes composite, s-video, and a remote. I would get this card if I had the money.
What's nice is there a programs that work with both of these cards that allow you to download tv schedules and schedule recordings so it's kinda like your own personal TiVo.
Those are probably the current best prices to buy those products at, plus, Newegg is a very reputable seller.

If it helps, i want FULL CONTROL of my dvd.
This is because there's gonna be a tourney soon, and i want to try my luck at making a dvd of this.
NEED HELP FAST. Thx in advance.
There are many programs and tutorials that can author dvds. The program I've come accross a few times is DVDMaestro (which might cost some money). Anyways, HERE (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/maestro.htm) is a guide for DVDMaestro.
You can find other tutorials HERE (http://www.videohelp.com/author) and HERE (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=32)
Hope that helps.

And Ad-Aware and Spybot dont find them d/ hijackthis and delete any bho files you see once you scan with it. also delete any files having to do with the site that is your home page. you will know these files because they will have (random 5 letter jumble).dll and those 5 letters will match the 5 letters of your home page. for example, mines was that kjhbb crap. i just deleted those files, and i deleted all tv media files and that was that. i no longer have the home page problem.
one problem i still have though, is i still get popups(not as bad though), and i still have the search the web tool bar on the bottom tool bar on my desktop. *sigh* even after running adaware and spybot.
i also can't remove search extender, shopping wizard, TV Media, Search Assistent from my add or remove programs list. even though i did the hijackthis thing and the res site is no longer my home page. =/
hope this helps though.

o that's cool.
so um what is the difference between a torrent and bittorent? god i am so clueless. so say i want to download match vids thru torrent what do i need? just click and d/l? or do i need a certain program maybe? and also i heard they work different, with like leeches and seeders or something?
also, if it matters i have the worst computer specs out of anyone on srk. my joint is 6 years old, 4gb c drive (one point something free), fucken X<1000 mhz or whatever. also i have 56k... haha my mouse barely works, wait that aint funny:(
Bittorrent is the program, torrents are the files...
Using BT uses alot of system resources... i doubt it works on your comp....
BT is like this:
open a .torrent file, and the dloading starts, it will connect to seeders (ppl who have got it completed but still share) and it connects to downloaders (ppl who already have bits but they have parts that you dont have yet...) and ppl will download bits of you that you already have... easy as that =)
use bittorrent++ its easier and you can set your options, have everything in 1 screen, etc.
Motoki: thnx a lot man, i have hijackthis but it once fucked up my internet and i had to do a hard reboot.... partially my fault, but it was the spyware that had overwritten start.dll and when i deleted that my internetcard didnt work anymore... Had to plug everything out, have it off for an hour or so, and then press the on button for 10 secs (while the cables are all out) and omfshit :| it worked again...

It sounds like you have CWS Hijack. It is a motherfucker of a malware-spyware program. I have thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it and I can't get off my HD. You can try CWS Schredder but it hasn't worked for me. The guy who made this program has given up working on it because the new variants of CWS are too difficult to detect and destroy.

hey guys im having a divx codec problem.
i dled a few .ogm codecs so i can watch a stupid .ogm video. the problem now is anything that plays with divx wont play. it will play the first 1 - 2 minutes then the XP error thing will pop up asking me to send the problem.
i deleted the divx codec and tried to reinstall but it still has the problem.
and when i watch media files now there is a wierd green bar at the bottom of my vids like naruto and what not.
EDIT: AIM me at maomaobadmonkey

seriously, FUCK whoever thought of a program like this. i would seriously go to this person and hit him in the face many, many times. you don't understand the frustration this program creates unless its hit you. ...*shakes head*
is there a place where i can post a hijack log? cuz i mean i have tried everything with hijack myself and it keeps coming back and coming back. i just dunno...:(
@hozato: i understand. i'd give up to, and feel like giving up now. but this is just too much. i know there's gotta be a way to get rid of this hijacking my home page thing and the search assistant bar. i've tried renaming the thing in the registery but still nothing. i've tried spybot, adaware, and spysweeper, AND hijackthis. even the msconfig thing, unchecking stuff in the start up menu. nothing.

I dont know how to stop this, but I recently re-installed windows xp and everything. I set up my usual apps on this PC, but this time, spyware is FLOODING in. Like I turned on the windows firewall and my router firewall, but that shit is still installing, on its OWN mind you, when im not even browsing webpages.
I'd definitley like to curb stomp the people who make these fucking programs.

I know we're all "amongst friends" and all here. :)
But sometimes our friends just don't check this thread often enough and don't get answers quick enough. Then again maybe I'm just an impatient bastard (I *am* grateful though!).
I highly recommend http://forums.anandtech.com as another place you can go to get your computer help and advice. :)

eh? Could you be more specific? Are you online? That's enough. Your ISP may be the problem.
Also, some apps have ads of their own (Gator corp and affiliates, for instance).
Simply reinstalling windows doesn't get rid of some programs. When you reinstall over your old OS the windows installer looks for programs already installed... which includes some spyware programs. If you want to get of something that recurs, you have to manually delete the thing (for some people, this means formatting the damn drive).

You have to format the computer, and then install xp again. That will kill all bugs in your computer and make sure you have some software to block those spywares, worms and commercialwares before you go online.

For all of u who are worried about viruses/spyware/ADS/security, read this artical, it's a must : CLICK !! (http://www.winxpcentral.com/basics/secure1.php)
I personnely use Norton Internet Security, it's the best software I've ever used to protect my PC from all this crap. It also includes, for those using Outlook, a special feature that blocks e-mail Spams.
U can either buy it or get it from MIRC or Bittorrent for freeee
one more thing, make sure u use those Spyware tools in SAFE MODE to get rid of those spyware for good. I personnely use the command lines "msconfig" and "regedit" to remove them manually cause it takes me less time and I have more control over my system.

If u get a bleu screen with a lot of crap written before it reboots, that means either your RAM or your HD's fucked up and that u need to replace either one of them; else, it must be a virus.

Usually I'm the one posting advice to others in this thread.. but now I need some help because honestly, I have no idea wtf is up.
Lately, after I restart my computer and connect to my dsl, everything works fine, then later on, maybe 10 minutes later when I try to access a webpage, both IE and FireFox won't connect and insist that there is a dns error, so it does the page cannot be displayed bullshit. I don't know wtf is up, it works fine until like 10 minutes later.

Most of you with spyware problems that say Ad-aware or Spybot don't work, you probably didn't UPDATE it first. You need to update their reference files before they will clean everything. Otherwise, they won't have the latest information about the newest spyware or adware.
I guaruntee you, run both of them after you update and it will fix 98% of spyware problems.
And make sure to delete everything it finds (as in, make sure all the checkboxes are checked after it searches.) I know that's common sense but it's too much for some people sometimes.

That happens because you are using the pc.
The problem is YOU!!!! Not the pc.
LOL!
To turn that off just go to conrtol panel>sounds and audio device properties.

I am having a problem with uninstalling an unwanted program. I was checking the "Add/remove programs" to clean things up and I come across "Internet Optimizer". I dont know what this is, and I dont want it here, but when I click "change/remove" it only "flashes" but does nothing to remove it. How do I get rid of programs like this?

If you have an XP machine, try running a System Restore. Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
Exhaust your other options first, though. Uninstall the codec pack (with ad-removal software or AV software if necessary, because 'codec packs' ain't exactly trustworthy). Re-install and/or roll back your audio drivers. Re-install the latest DirectX (9.0b, methinks).

Hi guys,
I have recently formatted my HD and installed win2k instead of WinME. I don't use IE, I use Mozilla, but somehow this stupid motherfucking ULTRA OBNOXIOUS popups got stuck in my system. Randomly IE will start up and load http://rpm.codenamenetwork.com/
and sometimes will launch MIRC too. I can't even play games anymore because it will launch IE in the middle of it.
So far I have use Ad Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and hijack this. All found spyware, I removed and deleted them THREE TIMES and after a reboot this bullshit is STILL FUCKING HAPPENING.
If anyone could tell me how to get this off my system I would really appreciate it.

I'm thinking of upgrading my video card to Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 128, and I'd like to know a couple of things:
1) The card say it requires an AGP 2x/4x slot. I have an Intel d850GB board that has "AGP connect supporting 1.5 V 4x or 2x AGP cards". Is this the same thing? (sorry, don't know squat about hardware).
2) if I hook up the video to a TV, will the TV be able to handle 1024x768 resolution? I read somewhere than TVs can only support 525 scan lines. Will the video card end up blurring the image so that it will fit the TV resolution?

Windows xp has the option to lock your systme and still download while your away.
Just to go to the control panels and account manage and set your account on what you want it to do.

Spybot will only detect and clean spyware, adware, etc that is found on your harddrive. It won't do anything with viruses (at least, not that I know of). 1 - set a password for ur account if u haven't done it before.
2 - go to "Start" > "Run"
3 - type "control userpasswords2"
4 - make sure the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" is checked
now whenever u wanna lock windows, press CTRL + ALT + DEL and then click on "Lock computer"
Oh yeah, don't forget to set passwords for the other accounts, especially the "Administrator" one. u might as well warn your friends or familly to not lay a finger on ur pc cause they might reboot it if they can't log in.

My mom read on like 13 websites that it's okay to delete .tmp files, so she was about to, but decided to put them into a folder to see if everything would be okay with them gone. I came along and saw what she did. She put every .tmp exept for the "read-only" .tmp files (she left them alone) into their own folder in my documents. So far, everything seems fine, but I notice that some of these aren't just 0 kb tmp files...some of them are as large as 8 mb, and are as old as 1998! Will I develop a problem, and if so, is there a way I can put these files back where they should be? I wish she HAD just sent them to the recycle bin, dammit! HELP?

ps...I don't have the cd for my OS (WinME) no. generally its safe, but "mom" + "deleting" is usually a stupid idea, she needs to find something else to do when she gets bored. moving them all to another folder would be a smart idea if anyone actually had kept track of where they came from (as you said, recycle bin would have been better as you can "restore" to it's original location). i wouldn't worry about it, especially since everything is still working.

i installed a game, but it doesnt play.... it says i need direct x v.8 or newer.. i have v.9 so i did the dxdiag.exe or whatever and it seems i have an uncertified display driver...
DEVICE: intel(r) 82810E Graphics Controller
Driver: i81xdw9x.drv
Version: 4.12.0001.2586
Date: 3/22/2000
WHQL'ed: NO
System: WinME
my game used to work...now it doesnt, i dunno if i updated a driver and it was uncertified or what but im sure that my problem... cause its not direct x....
now i need a newer updated WHQL'ed display driver... how, where do i get one..... i dont need anything supeer fancy cause my system isnt that great anyway... but if its certified, i think it will work
This is more a hardware issue, but my connection between my subwoofer and the ac adapter is a bit unstable. The ac adapter has to be plugged in a certain way ("pressed" downwards towards the floor) so there would be power.
At first I thought it was the ac itself, but I bought a brand new adapter and it's the same problem.
I'm currently using ducktape to hold the ac adapter plug in the certain position, but it still goes out of place so I lose sound from time to time.
Any way I can fix this myself without having to buy new speakers?

Usually 4-7 years.
But you can usually upgrade a PC just by replacing the CPU, motherboard, and case to make it last a bit longer than that.
Eventually though, it's just best to start fresh and build a whole new machine.

Personnely, from tomshardware.com tests that I have checked up till now, the cheapest "high" performance PC u should get is : amd 2600+, 512 ram, any video card with 128memory and a bus of 128bits (64 bits is alright).
I highly recommend 1G of RAM (dual channel), p4 2.8 ghz and more (800mhz FSB), Radeon 9600 pro or XT or better. You can also wait till Christmas when prices are gonna drop and get a system with all new features like DDR2, PCI express, and a 64bit processor.

ok, I've tried changing IPS on my xbox and pc about 20 times.
did I just get a shitty ethernet card?
my local ip is 192.168.0.100
xbox is 192.168.0.101, just as it should be
how would it work if I were to just hook my xbox into my pc?

Boot ur system in safe mode (press F8 before winxp starts up) let the password field empty and login as Administrator. People usually forget to set a password for the Administrator account.
Now u can change any password. If, however, u still can't log in, just repare XP or format and reinstall it from scratch.

What would be the best CPU for the mobo and my wallet?
(Im looking for 2.5+ghz)
here is what I found : CLICK !! (http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A7V333&langs=09)
If that's ur mobo and not the A7v333-X one, then the best fit would be AMD XP 2400+ or 2200+ you can get 2500+ and 2600+ but their bus speed (which is 333mhz) are higher than your mobo's (which is 200/266mhz)
ur mobo is really outdated, I suggest u get a new one as well as a new processor. U might as well get a new video card :p

What about the subnet mask?
If your ethernet card works connecting to the internet, then it's definitely not the card.
How do you have your xbox and PC linked together? Through a router or directly connected?

As I said before, any video card that has got 128 mb of memory is good to go, even if it's a G4 one. In one of those tomshardware.com tests, there is one G4 that performs better than FX5200 in many games.
As far as your system goes with an amd2400+ and G4, it should be juuuust ok for running HL2 and doom3, u'r gonna hardly get 30-40 fps. However, I really don't like ur MoBo, it's so limited. ur memory speed is also gonna hurt ur PC's performance. I'm pretty sure u can get a decent MoBo for less than 100$

msconfig only sets up what programs or services should be run during windows startup. Regedit.exe is what u'r looking for, u can also download a registry cleaner by looking over yahoo.com or google.com

I have back up disks for my OS, and I never use system recovery anyway. I usually just reformat and reinstall windows.
I just feel that I could use that 5GB it's taking up for other things.

REGEDIT
Norton Utilities
The guy who made spybot also made his own registry editor
Note that editing the registry isn't as easy as it sounds. While some programs are considerate enough to use legible registry keys, most do not and use a bunch of jumbled numbers and letters instead.
And why would you want to clean your registry? Most people have the false assumption that cleaning the registry will solve several problems, such as spyware. It doesn't. It doesn't even remove entries from programs you've already deleted.

If u'r using a router there nomore for a main CPU (server). U should check if, in ur router, DHCP is enabled, which will allow IP addresses automatically to each one of ur PCs. Now in ur network card settings, u should set it so that u get an automatic IP address and not a dynamic one.
.... to be continued :p

I checked the directory and the only one it shows up in is the Defiler Pack. It also says the gibberish files are 95 GB of space. But my hard drive says I have 150+ so thats ok.
Also, I can't download anything from the internet.

I have a new computer that I just got and am trying to hook up to the cable modem on the same connection to the second ethernet port on the hub.

The following steps of the repair falied: renewing the IP address.

U just can't use a hub as if it was a router, unless u pay for 2 different static IPs.
There are two ways to fix ur problem :
1 - easy way : get a router and use it instead of ur hub
2 - hard way : one of ur pcs must act like a server and the other one like a client. Connect the server one directly to ur modem and install winproxy. As far as the client goes, u need to connect it to the second network card of the server (u can use ur hub in between depending on what kinda cables u bought). U have to also install winproxy in it but as a client.

I'm not to sure about this, but I'll give it a try :)
*) Banning a range of IPs isn't the best option, cause :
1 - you could ban other people that use the same ISP.
2 - a hacker can mask his IP and change it to something else, or simply connect to ur website through another Network.
ur friend should maybe change the design of his website so that everyone who want to access some things on it have to create their own account and activate it later on by e-mail. Though, it's better if the admin has to activate those accounts by himself.

run about buster. it will destroy and .exe's that are bad that are causing the res:// shit. run hsremove to get rid of home search assistant. kill box is for killing files. i googled the shit out of some of the search assistant files. on different sites i've found different hkey's or something like that in the registry. just copy paste them-the one's that ppl say are bad from your google search of search assistant into the section in kill box that asks you for a file name. if you have that crap on your comp, kill box will delete it for you permanently. if you don't have the file then it will say file doesn't exist. but bottom line, run about buster. that should be the end all of all that res crap. if you need any of these programs:

I thought you were looking a way to change access to .txt files to notepad.exe? Even if you can't find wordpad, it shouldn't matter because the entire process I showed doesn't even look for worpad, and you can access the program files no matter where you extract them.
dznutz: I believe there are actually companies that do data recovery on some of the weirdest shit involved (I believe I saw an advert claiming they recovered the contents of a hard disk left under the amazon river for a year). I can't remember the company name, but they do exist. Probably won't be cheap.

^ go to run, type in msconfig, go to start up and un check the yahoo thing. it won't show up anymore. as for the desktop icon, just delete it from your desktop. when you want to run yahoo go to the start menu and do it that way.
hope that helped.

I have a seemingly simple but very annoying problem. Whenever I try and open or "save as" a file within a program, everything appears in reverse alphabetical order in the explorer.

Try right-clicking in the file list and arranging the icons by name. If that fails, try arranging by something else, THEN by name.

Very strange. Normally, when you pick a sort method, and then pick it AGAIN right away, it'll reverse the order...
If that didn't work it's probably some obscure registry key or something...

Does anyone know of a good TV Tuner program I can download for recording my mvc2 matches from my vcr and saving them onto my pc? I have software that came with the card, it works and all, but I can't take it off of mono. I think that's why when I record and save it as mpeg or any other file it has that dumb static noise in it. It's not too major but it's a little annoying.
I have some mvc2 matches with me and 2 of my friends playing. I wan't to have them online but I don't want that dumb noise in the way. I used another program and tried it but I lost it and now I need another one. The static noise didn't happen when I used the other program.
Can anyone help me at all?
The sooner I get that program, the faster I can put these vids online.
The card I have is an "ATI TV WONDER CAPTURE card" The software it came with was the ATI multimedia center. I think the main problem is, it wont go off mono and i can't change it.
CAN ANYBODY HELP PLEASE?????

For the past week my print spooler has been acting up. I keep on getting the message "cannot load journal.dll -- please reinstall". I have an epson stylus 300, win98se.
I tried looking for solutions from epson, who suggested downloading their newest driver. Doesn't work. They suggested making a dedicated spool subdirectory. Doesn't work because the spool program itself doesn't work.
I googled it up, and found other people with similar problems (same problem, other printers/os, some of the posts were way back up to 1998). Most solutions offered involved the same ones epson said (dedicated spooler)... which makes me wonder if anyone really tried it because I can't even access the spooler program. One fixed his by getting rid of hardware conflicts. I booted clean, no dice.
In fact, as far as I can see, there is no such thing as journal.dll. It doesn't exist in the epson drivers. I can't find it in windows. I can't even find it _anywhere_ in the net. AFAIK, it doesn't exist. Why on earth is my printer spooler even looking for it?
And I'm bumping my old question, hopefully someone can answer:

Is there a prog that can take the static out of mpeg files? Like the static the is caused from the recording from your tv tuner and stuff?

I need help. that file is required for some MS Visual Basic programs to run, and your older version of windows didn't come with it.
this particular message is actually pretty straight-forward. it's saying you don't have the file, so get it. type it into google, download it, save it into one of those folders listed in the error.

How do you change the default player for specific media types? My .wmv files all open up in WinAMP by default, but I want them to open in Windows Media Player. Can anyone help?

I have a question, but to the last poster:
I don't know how to fix that, but just right click and open with that media player if the files are out in the open, otherwise I don't know. =|
My question is:
I downloaded ABC (Yet Another Bit Torrent Client). My old one didn't work very well, so a friend recommended this one. I left it on last night, and I guess it shut down right away, because the downloads were barely done (like .5%) and my computer restarted. I tried again today, and in 20 minutes, it restarted again, out of nowhere. -_- Any ideas?

ggpokthxbye^_^ or holding SHIFT while you right click the file will give you the "Open With..." option, then after selecting the program, check the "always use this program" box. just another way to do the same thing.
Psycho Gorath :: depends on your FTP client, but i know with internet explorer (a poor man's FTP client), copy/paste works.

I've tried uninstalling and re installing (Im using the newest version of aim) and not even that worked. I'm having a problem with the speed of my computer. The RAM is 128 MB, so it's not like I have much to work with. However, it goes very slow. I noticed this happened after I installed Norton Antivirus 2004. Does anyone know how I can remedy this problem?

Have you tried un-installing NAV? Or turning off its real-time protection? Some AV software can bog down a computer big time when its running in the background.

That all depends on the specs on your system. Believe it not, more is not always better.
If all you have is 128mb and it's a store bought system that has been unchanged...I am guessing you are running Win98 or possibly WinME. I would recommend upgrading with another stick of 64...Bringing you up to 191. You should see a difference but it won't blow you away. Anything after that is pretty much overkill. You could upgrade to 256 but I doubt you would notice the difference.
For each Windows OS...There is a recommended amount of memory that will give you optimal performance, but I don't know these numbers by heart.
Anyway, besides the NAV...You should check to see if there is anything else un-needed running in the background. Especially on older systems - increasing system resources can give you a lot of performance back :D
