i have actually used 4 different versions 3.5, 4.0B, 4.0C, and 3.9A. i have used up about 13 cdr's now. needless to say it's a bit aggrivating. i also tried using the discjuggler method, which was successful on burning the cd but gets stuck at the dreamcast screen with the swirly thing.

Alright well the site has been updated and a special script to help with converting and looping your song files has been released(created by me). Hope you enjoy it and give some feed back. God I hope everything works right....

Hey, I have a few questions since I just finished the tutorial and my disc doesn't work.
I followed all the instructions, but the only one that really stumps me is the "Dummy File" area. Say if the file I have is 350 mbs before the dummy file, what do I do? Do I put 250 in the number box to add it up to 600 and then make it an ISO?
Also, the file I got was a file that was already edited with music, would that affect anything? I deleted the 1st_read.bin file and the dummy file, would it just be the same way?

FOr the dummt yeah thats about right. You just dont wanna go over 700mb in the end basically to be safe. So try and stick below 700mb for the final size. As for your Mvc2 file, the file already having being edited with new music wont affect it. Just do all the steps and it should work out the same.

You can delete the dummy file all you want, but the 1st_read.bin is the main program; you must have one on your disc or it won't work. Go ahead and delete the dummy file, and use that version you already have with the edited music, and go through combomasher's directions exactly, you'll be fine.

Check the download section of the new site. It's there in a zipped file called Bin2boot.zip. its in the selfboot.zip file too, its called selfboot.exe.

i got mvc2 from torrent, its already got everything in it from what i can tell. hte music has already been changed, theres a dummy file in it. i m having a lot of trouble burning it to a disk though. im thinking maybe the overall size is too big, its over 740 mbs total. ive tried using nero and that juggler one, neither worked :annoy:

The disc being 740mb could be the problem. WHy dont you delete the dummy file and try making the dummy file like 50mb smaller then what it currently is. Just stay under 700mb, make a test burn without a dummy file just to see if it works, then add the dummy file.

I'm experiencing the same issues with CDRWIN in that iy says the drive on my new comp is unsupported. the old drive like the old comp are long gone and the latest version of the software seems far less funcional. I even serialized it to see if it would unlockother features. no luck. I've also tried using nero 7 and roxio easy CD creator also with no luck.
in the instructions involving disk juggler which also does support my drive with the version provided has steps that also revolve around CDRWIN. are there drivers somewhere for the older SW so I can run the old program with new hardware? is there other software that we can use? this is getting very frusterating as my coasters have been piling up like crazy.
Any solution would be greatly appriciated.
For the record, the comp is an HP with a lightscribe DVD burner. if people need the model number, I can provide. thanks in advance

after completing all the steps on both the website and on the step by step videos both times i get an error message in cdrwin that says
"ERROR: 'WRITE' command failed on device 1,0,0 Illegal command request (04H 00h 02h 05h 21h 00h"
am i burning it wrong or did i miss a step during the command prompt or what's happening
This might help:
"When recording a disc, I receive the error message "Write command failed... Read/Write error or bad medium detected". What does this mean?
This error is usually caused by a buffer underrun (the term "buffer underrun" means that data is not being sent to the recorder at a fast enough rate to maintain the selected recording speed).
This slowdown could be caused by other applications that are running on your system at the same time. This includes screen savers, power saving options, disk utilities, virus checkers, or other programs that may be running in the background. This problem can also occur if you are trying to backup a CD directly from a CDROM drive to your recorder. If this occurs, then we suggest that you copy to your harddrive first.
To solve this problem, you can try recording at a slower speed, shutting down other applications, or enabling the caching feature in the software on the "Devices and Settings" screen. Note: Do not set the cache size larger than 2MB. Anything larger than this is unnecessary and can cause system performance problems. "

Ok for everyone who is having issues with old versions of CDRWIN, I've found an excellent soultion as long as you're using the self booting CDI option.
For starters do everything as normal up to the part where the instructions say to use CDRWIN. from here things get a little different.
Nero has a peoce of advanced software called "nero burning rom" it has far more options than standard Nero and is included in their deluxe package. I'm using version 7, but I'm sure others will probably work as well. Anyway once you open the program it will prompt you with a screen to select your product type. in this case just like you would with CDRWIN, choose ISO/UDF CD. From here, the default settings should be fine, So click the button that says "new"
Now on this new screen you have a browser. find your data folder in the browser and drag the contents to the CD image on the left. this will circumvent the "preserve full pathnames" option we had to uncheck in CDRWIN. Now at the top of the screen there should be a menu that says "recorder" click there and look for the option that says "choose recorder". Another window with come up and you should see a drop-down menu with your burner listed. click the arrow and select "Nero Image Burner" then click ok.
No click "Burn" another window should pop up. just click the tab that says burn and make sure you check the "finalize CD" option this particular step might be unneccesary, but it's what I did so I'm not leaving it to chance. Anyway click burn again and it should give you a "save as..." screen name it whatever you want, set the destination as your selfboot folder and click the drop down menu at the bottom to set the file type to ISO. click ok.
Now that the hard part is done, we're almost home. for those of you having trouble with bin2boot, make sure you're not using the version titles\d "selfboot.exe" I've had nothing but trouble with that one. instead use the over version that combomasher provides and do not bother changing the file type to bin as this version can work with ISOs just the same. If it still gives you issues, close your dos prompts and make sure 1st_ read.bin is uncompressed and in your selfboot directory. with all that out of the way, Bin2Boot should work just fine and if it has. you'r ready to burn.
While CM mentions it's possible to burn the image with nero after using a conversion tool, I haven't seen all the options in nero that we need to have checked off in discjuggler, so I wouldn't suggest it. the demo of Discjuggler is free and it gets the job done, so from here, just follow CMs instructions and you'll have a selfbooting copy of MvC2 in a matter of minutes.
if anything I said here is erroneous or people have questions, either PM me or post here and I'll help if I can. BTW CM, thanks for the tut. it's by far the best I've seen.

-masher, i did already check the cdrwin website for that error code. I would like to say thank you for trying to help out with this. i tried closing all processes as well, disabled my wireless card, and disconected my ext-hdrive, and the same error happens. at 99% every time. i have used the selfboot cdi option on the website using discjuggler, i don't get an error message but when i try to play it the DC sounds like it really WANTS to read the disc but gets stuck at dreamcast screen with the little squiggly thing when you first turn it on. i never had problems with making a non-selfboot marvel. but doing that for more than a year got pretty annoying. again thanks for your help.

you need a disk image (ISO) or a backup (be it selfboot or not)
original DC games are not readable by a PC, so you can't backup the data folder and at that point the entire project becomes moot.

allinone.bat should be in the adxenc directory.
as far as difficulty finding it you'll want to try bittorrent type sites and if you're on dial-up it's going to be slow no matter what I dunno how to help you. the school probably isn't the best way to do it. do you have any friends with broadband? the iso shouldn't be more than 300-400mb so it shouldn't take TOO long, but I don't think I can give out links to that sort of thing.

I've seen PS2 games with remixed track, but the only on I've heard worked perfectly was Naruto Narutimate Hero 3. I don't imagie it would be hard to do the same of the PS2 version of MvC2 as long as the audio was ADX format, but the CD/DVD wouldn't be selfboot. you'd most certainly need a boot disk or a chipped PS2.

Question # 1: Is it okay/safe for me to try and burn my original PS2 copy (Korean version) onto a CD?
You see, I've never even burned a current-gen game before let alone tried to change the music for it. I'm gonna try and see if I can get it to work with the PS2 version (swap magic).
Question #2: Should I be checking to see if the burned copy even works before I get started with this process, or should that be done afterwards?
Sorry to sound like a scrub on the subject.
It's just that I don't want to fuck up before I even get started as I only have one blank CD to work with at the moment. That and I don't want my original copy to become unplayable because of some stupid mistake I made.
Darklightjg1
10-25-2006, 07:54 PM
Okay, so it is safe to make an image from my original copy.
Well, I followed (most of) the steps until I got to the part on creating a selfbooting image. When I drag over the bin file, no Dos window pops up at all. Only thing that shows up is a bin2boot.exe icon in the folder but when I click on it, it says: "Attempt to access invalid address" I'm not sure if it has anything the do with it being the PS2 version or what.
So does anyone actually have a working PS2 version MVC2 custom mix? If so, can you give me some pointers? I read through the whole topic twice and maybe I'm still missing something. I'm about to read it again.:looney:
Also, does it matter that I'm going to be using a CD-RW instead of a CD-R?
See I already burned it once (skipping the selfboot step) and when I tried to load it with swap magic I just got the: "Not a valid PS2 disc" message. I was wondering if that was because I skipped the selfboot step or because of the actual CD type. If it's the latter, then I'll go buy some CD-Rs tomorrow.

my dreamcast keeps reading the disc as a music cd, and will only load the game like once every 100 tries.

Well I have never done this with PS2, and havent heard so far that anyone has been able to do this with PS2. I dont have much experience with ps2 burning, but I think that you need to burn to a dvd disc rather then a cd-r/rw. And I think that the whole selfbooting process will be different since you want to make a selfboot game for a completely different system, so the DC instructions wouldnt work. The only steps that would be the same I think is if the music files for the ps2 version of marvel were .adx files. If that was true, then i would assume that you could do the same method for converting the songs as you would with the DC version. But the whole selfbooting part should be a whole different process.

Yeah, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is one of the few PS2 games that is actually a CD-Rom as opposed to a DVD-Rom; that's why I'm using the CD-RW/CD-R.
It turns out that the disc didn't even work as a stand-alone backup (when I just formatted it and burned only what was copied from the original disc using Alcohol 120%) so maybe it was because it was a CD-RW.
I've been browsing around the internet and apparently no one knows a way to make PS2 backups selfboot. I've even seen people say: "You can't". I'm assuming that a modchip or swap-magic does all the work and boots the burned PS2 games for them.
And on the subject of the converting the songs as long as both versions use ADX format: how could you tell? I didn't see anything in the PS2 image file that indicated the use of .adx files.
Here's an image of the contents from the image file ripped directly from my original copy:http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/5440/marvelps2folderimagebr7.th.png
Does it look similar to the dreamcast image or completel different? (There's nothing with.adx in the other two folders in that image either btw).
I bought ten potential "coasters" today (I'll set three aside for trying to work the dreamcast version). When I get home, if I can even get a working PS2 backup, then I'll start experimenting and let you guys know if I find a successful method.
BTW, Combomasher, do you still plan on making a forum?
EDIT: Whoa... I thought by uploading that image on imageshack that it would at least be visble.(Sorry it's my first time)
Well here's what the contents are respectively:
1. A folder named "MODULES".
2. A folder named "PS2".
3. A TM2 file called "FONT_8.TM2"
4. A 23 file called "SLPM_645.23"
5. Something named "SYSTEM" (Has a computer icon)
So, any similarities?

no, but you're on the outer layer which is primarily boot instructions for the PS2. you'd be looking for files with names like ADX_S000.bin
if those aren't there, then I have no idea where to start.
BTW I have never seen a PS2 with the same file system as DC ever. I highly doubt it will work using the DC method. Keep me updated on your progress though.

10-27-2006, 09:34 AM
The only success I had so far was making a Mix for the Dreamcast version. I also want to mention that I didn't go through the step to make the game selfboot because for some reason the program that was supposed to do it didn't do anything on my computer as well as the other two selfboot programs provided somewhere near the beginning of this topic (Maybe it's because I'm an XP user, I dunno if that matters). If anyone else is experiencing this problem then you should probably just download and burn the image file for the Utopia boot disc and use that to boot the game.
My progress with the PS2 version thus far:
Okay, even though I managed to make a stand-alone backup for the PS2 (you HAVE to use CD-R, it won't work with CD-RW) I didn't make a successful custom mix at all. Any disc where I included the ADX files would just load a black screen, but would never start the game.
However, after going through like 6 "coasters" of trying different setups and arrangements and making a Mix for the Dreamcast version, I think I know the reason(s) why it wont work out the same way.
Let me first start off by answering beatsofdevil's question:
so does anyone have any info of what info i should look for when i look to dl this image file. like size/name/source etc.
When I torrented the image file, it was just a bunch of the same zip file. All you have to do is extract one of them to get the image file (which is roughly 700 mb, give or take). Mount the image to Daemon's Tools as described in Combomasher's tutorial and here's a jist of the contents you should see (Or at least this is what I saw):
1. 6 Folders: " DPETC, DPFONT, DPMODEL, DPSS, DPTEX, and DPWWW"
2.A SHITLOAD of .bin files (You'll also see the ADX files amongst them)
3. Amongst those bin files is also the DUMMY.DAT file which you'll want to get rid of (to be replaced later) when you put all these files into your data folder as described in Combomasher's tutorial.
I hope this answers your question.
...The contents of this image file is NOTHING like the image file for the PS2 version. When you're changing the files of the Dreamcast version, you're not actually changing the names of anything so the Dreamcast still thinks it's the same game.
I didn't realize this when I first started off trying to do this with the PS2 version and adding files that were never meant to be there in the first place. So I decided to check and see if I could figure out what the actual files of PS2 version were about:
-In the MODULES folder there are a bunch of .IRX files. After doing a little bit of reading on them I think they're basically toolkits for the developers to use:[img=http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/3109/modulesfolderimagejw7.th.png] (http://img158.imageshack.us/my.php?image=modulesfolderimagejw7.png)
I'm not sure if there's anyhing in there that works with .ADX files and it wouldn't allow me to dig any deeper by trying to open them.
-In the PS2 Folder are a few .ASF file (Advanced Streaming Format?):[img=http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8914/ps2folderimageaz1.th.png] (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ps2folderimageaz1.png)
MAYBE they have something to do with the way the music is played in the PS2 version?
Right now, I've only got two CD's left to work with ('Prolly gonna get some more next week if we make any more progress). If anyone has any suggestions/ideas on perhaps converting audio to ASF, let me know and I can try that out.

Alright, so I was messing with the ps2 mvc2 and found the Music files for each stange. I still need to do some work on it but it looks like you can change the music for ps2 as well.
BUT!!!!!!.....from what i've read, in order to play burned games you need a modchip or to hack your ps2 to get these games to work.

through a turn of events I was actually able to get the CDI (i think it was it, I actually got like 9 copies of it for some reason) but those same events has me now without a DC...well for now at least.
SO is there any way to play this on a computer? I heard something about an emulator? I want to play!!!! :P

Wow, so I found program that can convert wav files to adx and loop them without having to use the DOS command at all. It does what my batch script can do, but this is an actual program that can do it and is really easy to use. You can select to loop the adx file or not, and it also can convert adx back to wav with the push of a button. So no more adxencd, dos commands, or any of that. This program is more practical because unlike my script where the files have to be named exactly right for it to work, you can just point and click a song or bunch of songs and have the program do it for you.

Is there any reason why adxencd wouldn't be working for me right now when it worked fine before? Even that new program won't convert the songs successfully because of it; it keeps saying "Adxencd.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" (this happens both when I just try to use adxencd or the DKZ studio program).
Maybe it's some issue with the Command Prompt (because that method doesn't seem to be working either). 'Anyone had this issue before?

You do not have to copy the ip.bin into the data folder for the echelon method. THe ip.bin gets inserted using the ipins.exe program after you have created the ISO.

There are tons of ways to convert MP3 to WAV. If you have WinAMP, go into the output preferences and choose Disk Writer. That'll do it for you easy.

I haven't seen this in the guide, but...
For PS2 games, there's a max file size for each of the sound files in the game. I'm restricted only to putting in music that fits those max file sizes. Some of them are small, and I can't fit the music I want.
Is there any way to extend the max file size without messing up the game?

hey guys i started combomasher tutorial for custom mvc2. i have a custom self boot copy of mvc2 that i used for data transfer. BUT i couldn't find the the dummy file or dummy bin in my custom mvc2 that i'm using for data... ... please help
is there another name it could go by?
also is the dummy file a big file (like a couple hundred Megabytes)?
so currently i just copy'd everything into the selfboot folder, will this cause problems since i couldn't find or leave out the dummy file?
also what the heck does the dummy file for?
sorry one last question when i follow the tutorial and get to the part CREATE ISO how do i know which option to use?
option 1 is "create selfboot image file"
option 2 is "echelon method"
what are the differences here?

It can go by any name, but since unless told otherwise, ISO making programs sort by alphabet, they usually have A' or 0's in the beginning of the file name. Dummy file, if there is one, is huge. For fighters, which are small games, it will be bigger than the rest of the cd combined.
You can leave out the dummy file and it will work fine, except with possible sound skippage issues.
What they do:
Discs spin. The inside sections of data may spin by 1 meter of data per second by the laser, but when spun the same speed, the outtermost tracks may spin 3 meters of data by the laser. (number completely pulled out of my ass, but should get the point across) So, the farther out on the disk the data is, the faster it is read by the DC. So, a dummy file is a big file (disc size - game size = perfect dummy size) names early in the alphabet so it gets burned first, taking up all of the slow inside room on the CD, so all of the game gets burned on the outside, faster, areas, resulting in lower load times, and less FMV or audio skippage.

I have a quick question.
I took like 7 songs and cropped them together to make one .wav file. I turned this file into the training stage music so I could hear more than 1 song when I practiced. Well, all those songs work in training mode but when I try different levels the game resets. Some stages work and some don't which leads me to believe that maybe some of the .adx's are bad but why would it let me listen to them in training mode?
I didnt use new songs for the training stage. I cropped them together from all the single stage music I originally changed. Used acid pro to crop all the songs I wanted together fyi.

Yeah the tutorial is the shit but the only thing I can't figure out is how to make the songs loop by themselves. 1. You do not need a new one, you can use the one with your original cvs2 disk, as long as the one your are making is a selfboot.
1a.yes
1b.If its for the game you are tweaking, sure. Double check, but just use the one you already have.
1c. NO. 1st_read.bin's are NOT interchangable.
2.What about it?
2a. Yup. They ARE interchangable between games (mostly)
2b. Yup.
3. Tons of options. bin2boot, or the echelon self boot tutorial if you like getting your hands dirty in DOS.
Just follow the tutorial. With the exception of the name of the ADX files, everything is identical tweaking MvC2 and CvS2. As long as you make sure your new music is the same name and same directory as on your current cvs2 copy, everything else is identical.

Toodles, thanks for your reply
i have made numerous mvc2 remixes following combomashers guide, no problems but when it comes to CVS2 combomashers bin2boot (i'm guessing is the cause for my coastered cvs2 remakes not to work) i looked back a few post and he (combomasher) said that bin2boot doesn't work for him either (game gets to the audio cd track thang on the DC) and he claimed that exoboot (not sure what version though) worked for him. i followed that linked, downloaded exoboot 1.31. exoboot 1.31 didn't work it won't even start re-doing my cvs2 data folder.
i think x997 (srk memeber)(he's made like 4 dozen coasters in his attmept!) in cvs2 claimed that exoboot version 1.21 finally worked for him, so i went to that version and same thing as version 1.31. i know these exoboot programs are real small, maybe i don't have the full/correct one or i don't know what the hell i'm doing... ... btw i don't know any DOS at all, could that be the problem. i'm the click n drag type of guy but if i have to learn a little DOS i'll gladly do it

1. Copy all of the contents of your working selfboot cvs2 disc to a directory somewhere on your computer. We're going to call this the 'data' directory from here at for easy typing. Make it something easy, like c:\cvs2data
2. Download the ip.bin from combomasher's site, and save it to the data directory.
3. Convert your music to ADX's, and once done, replace the original ADX's in the data directory with your new ones. I am assuming you've got this part down, so I wont go into painful detail. Just make sure the new ADX's have the same name and extension as the original ADXs that were there. In Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > View tab > And if there is a check in "Hide File Extension for known file types', take it out! No check there. This will help make sure you dont end up with BLAHBLAH.adx.bin when you just want BLAHBLAH.bin
4. Combomasher's tutorial says to delete the 1st_read.bin. Do NOT do this. We can use the original just fine, if you selfboot the disc.
5. Download tools from http://www.sbox.tugraz.at/home/t/tplank/cdrtools-2.01.01a22-win32-bin.zip
6. Open the zip, and put everything in the zip into the windows system32 directory on your system (probably C:\Winnt\system32\. Just look for the system32 directory in whatever your windows directory is.)
7. Download the Echelon selfboot toolkit from here:http://www.megagames.com/console/cgi-bin/dl.cgi?id=dc&file=e-selfbt!zip
8. Open up the .zip from above. Put the BINHACK and IPINS executable into the same system32 directory you did above. There is a file in the zip called 'audio.raw'. Save that to the 'data' directory we put the cvs2 files.
9. Open up the instructions from the toolkit, or just read them here: http://www.megagames.com/dc/dc_selfboot_tutorial.shtml Dont go following them yet, just have them handy.
10. Now, we need to find your cd-r drive's SCSI number. Open up a DOS window, and type 'cdrecord -scanbus'. In the list that shows up, you are looking for the name of your drive. What we want is the '0,0,0' type number next to it. Something like 0,2,0 or 2,0,0, or 1,0,0, whatever. Write that down on a piece of paper. When I type DEVICE later, you'll be putting in those numbers.
11. In the DOS window, change directory to your 'data' directory. 'cd c:\cvs2data' or whatever the directory is.
12. Put a blank cd into the drive.
13. Burn the audio.raw file, but NOT closing the disk to further writing. The command for this is: cdrecord -dev=DEVICE -multi -audio audio.raw
On mine, it would be 'cdrecord -dev=2,0,0 -multi -audio audio.raw
14. Once it has finished burning, you need another number from the disk. Leaving the cd-r you just burned to in the drive, run the command: cdrecord -dev=DEVICE -msinfo
15. This will return a pair of number, probably '0,11700' or '0,11702'. Either way, write that number down. That number is the LBA, so when I write 'LBA' in future steps, replace it exactly with what you got here.
16. Remove the 'read only' bit from the files. Run the command 'attrib -r *.*' in the DOS window.
17. RUn the binhack utility. In DOS, in that same data directory, just type in 'binhack'
18. It will ask for 'boot.bin'. Just type in '1st_read.bin' (without the quotes)
19 It will ask for the ip.bin. Just type in 'ip.bin' (without the quotes)
20 It will ask for an LBA or msinfo number. ONLY type in the second number (11702), not the whole thing!
21. BinHack will hopefully say it patched everything ok. If so, MOVE the ip.bin to your c:\ drive/directory with the dos command 'move ip.bin c:\'
22. Leave the data directory with the dos command 'cd c:\'
23. Make the ISO. The DOS command is "mkisofs -C LBA -V ThisCDCosts50dollar -l -o data.iso cvs2data" Remember, the 'LBA' should be BOTH nubers you got before, like 0,11702
24. Insert the IP.BIN. The dos command is 'ipins'. It will ask for the bootsector, so type in 'ip.bin'. it will ask for the iso, type in 'data.iso'. Hopefully it will complete without any problems.
25. Burn the ISO. The command is 'cdrecord -dev=DEVICE -xa1 data.iso'

Heh, now its my turn for a question, since I actually haven't done much music swappage.
Im looking to redo TDC Final with a ton more stuff, and I'd really like to reduce the bitrate on the music so I can cram more onto the disc. The thing is, I want them to still loop properly. I know I can set the looping information with ADXENCD.EXE, but I want to know if there are any programs, preferable command line ones, that will tell me what the looping data is on an existing looped ADX file. If I can find a command line program that will, I can write a quick script that will get the data, convert to wav, crunch the looping number, and re-encode to ADX at the lower bitrate with the same looping.
So, what is the best way to find out exactly when and if an ADX will loop?
ComboMasher

Could you use adxencd to just reduce the birate and loop the song?
Toodles
12-17-2006, 03:10 PM
Yes, I plan on using adxencd to reduce the bitrate and loop the song. The problem is, many of the ADX's, especially for 3rd Strike, are not a simple 'once at the end, loop to the beginning', they play until the end, and then loop to a spot around the middle. They have a very first opening rift, then the main music, and once at the end, loop to the beginning of the main music, avoiding the opening rift. I would like to find a away to determine exactly where the loop markers are, other than just listening to each damn one in adxplayer or something.
ComboMasher
12-17-2006, 03:46 PM
Oh I get what you mean now, well the only thing I can think of is the in_cube.dll plugin for winamp. You can view the file information for each song, it shows the the birate, type of adx file, how many samples, the Loop Start and the Loop End. And when i played some 3S songs with the plugin and viewed the file info for each song some of the songs loop at 1 sec, 4 sec, etc.... Maybe that could help you in your goal. I know it aint command line, but its the only thing I can think of.

Sweet, Im on it. Not command line, but whatever.
Know anything about the -lcof and -ldim switches to adxencd? I think they might be what's needed for the 'fade out' at the end of some ADX's (3rd strike stage files. You can't hear it if you play in adxplay.exe, but if you convert it to a wav with adx2wav, you hear it, and you can hear it from the adx's directly with the winamp plugin.) but I have no clue how to use it.

Woot, that had what I needed alright. I may peek around and see if I can find that data in the ADX file itself, but for now, that gives me the frame information I need. Thanks.

This isn't meant to be a 'which is better' question, or even to bring in debate about why 3S for DC sucks. I just wanted to see if anyone noticed anything.
See, someone in the tech forum started swearing that the jap version was tons better than the american version of 3S. So I thought I'd include both versions (which will be easy; putting in both versions only adds 10 Megs of of overhead at worst). But I looked at the files that differ:
2696 jap3s/1ST_READ.BIN
3540 jap3s/2_DP.BIN
4 jap3s/COLORS/PL04PL.BIN
1100 jap3s/EFFECT/EF02.BIN
168 jap3s/EFFECT/EF40.BIN
32 jap3s/IP.BIN
16 jap3s/MAIGO.BIN
160 jap3s/OPENING/WARNING.PZZ
1788 jap3s/PLAYER/PL20.BIN
52 jap3s/SCRSCRN/SCRSCRN.PZZ
16 jap3s/SG_DPLDR.BIN
Two effect files? One players file, and one player pallette file????
Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any differences between single char's Jap version and their US version? Anyone know who got the slightly different color pallette? Or the effect differences?
Next version will have both US and Jap versions for sure, but Im curious about those changes.
And now to see how much overhead including the Jap MvC2 will cost....

I think it's the same... but you gotta use a bootdisc or mod chip to play it, unlike the DC version.

Nah, there's more to it. Instead of individual ADX files, they are all bunched together in a single AFS file you have to dick with. There's also a bitrate limitation that the DC versions don't have. ComboMasher is working on a PS2 tutorial, so sit back and wait and he'll have it all spelled out. And of course, you need some way of playing burns or ISO's.
Well, I've run into a minor snag on the new tdc final. Both CvS2 and MvC2 take the crunched ADX files just peachy, but Third Strike pukes on anything that isn't 44100Khz stereo. So....If I crunch the CvS2 and MvC2 tunes to make more room, then 3S can't use them or any others for a soundtrack option. CvS2 and MvC2 can use the 3S tunes, but not visa versa. 3S would have 'original soundtrack' and that's it. Plus it costs me an additional 60 megs that I really could have put to good use if it just behaved like a well coded program should. Damnit.

question: how the fuck was that MvC2 / CvS2 / 3S disc made, where you can swap the soundtracks for each?

There's a way in linux to have a file show up in different directories and different names but with the same file contents. Its called linking. Since each of those files point to the same chunks of data, they dont take up extra room. So a 1 meg file in 15 places with 15 names, all containing the same music track, would only take up 1 meg on the disk. So I put 3S, MvC2, and CvS2 on the disk, and then made a crap ton of phantom copies like that. What shows up as ADX_MENU.BIN in one of the CvS2 directories, contains all the same data that the main menu for MvC2 is supposed to have. Since all ov CvS2 is elsewhere on the disk, and that main menu track for MvC2 is elsewhere on the disk, those phantom copies dont take up any space, just reuses what was already used.
Im sure its possible to do all that in Windows, but I got no clue how and no ones offered up any ideas.

Question: Do i turn up the volume on the sound files before or after theyve been converted to ADX?
Also this part in combomashers tutorial is confusing me a bit.
The next step is to make the newly created ISO selfboot. First you must rename the file extension of the ISO file from ".iso" to ".bin". To do this just go to "START" - "Control Panel" - "Tools" - "Folder Options"-"View"- and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types". Then delete the ".iso" and change it to ".bin"

Question: Do i turn up the volume on the sound files before or after theyve been converted to ADX?You convert them while they're a .WAV, before you convert them to ADX.
Also this part in combomashers tutorial is confusing me a bit.
He's just saying to rename the .ISO to a .BIN. Most people have file extensions hidden so they can't see or rename them. The extra step is to make sure you see and can change the extension.
Well, turns out you can do linking on a windows box, but comes with a little risk.
"Be careful when using this option on a filesystem without unique inode numbers as it may result in files containing the wrong content on CD." - From the man page.
In order to do it, you have to have Cygwin and mkisofs installed. Inside your little work directory, place the original files. Use the 'ln' command to make hard links for the duplicated files, or 'cp -r -l' for duplicating whole directories. Then, when you use mkisofs to make the ISO, use the command switch '-cache-inodes'. It's been working for me in linux and not cygwin because the -cache-inodes switch is enabled by default on linux, and not in cygwin.

Not to hijack the thread completely, but I figured out what the hell everything in MB is compressed under.
They're using CRI's ROFS (http://www.cri-mw.co.jp/products/product_rofs_e.htm) as a virtual file system, and I'm nearly certain the actual music tracks are in ADX format.
Found the file format (in Japanese) (http://homepage1.nifty.com/~hin/rofs.html). Apparently this mounts straight as an ISO out of Daemon tools?

I guess Im about the only one posting in this thread it seems :)
A few things:
1. It seems someone wrote a utility to do the file linking under windows. I havent used it personaly, but would be something to look into. Just as an example, making a MvC2 disk with the option of, oh, 10 different soundtracks would be very doable. Follow the "Multiple File LBA Copier v1.3" link here: http://www.bucanero.com.ar/descargas.php?id_categoria_descarga=2
2. Using the 45000 LBA DATA/DATA method for selfbooting is MUCH more reliable than the usual Audio/Data method. My audio/data discs would boot maybe half of the time (have to keep resetting the DC to get it to finally boot), but the 45000 Data/Data discs boot flawlessly every time. A little more work, but well worth it.
3. A tutorial on using XDP (translated browser) for a menu to boot many games on one disk should be easy; If you guys want it, let me know and I'll throw it together and ask Combomasher to host it.
4. I've got everything mentioned in the post above on a disk, and still have a little under 50 megs free. I need some ideas of what would be cool to put in. Im also open to the idea of ditching Ikaruga, freeing up another 30 something megs, if it means I can fit a decent fighting game in. Im open to suggestions; World Warrior/CE/Hyper Fighting via MAME4all? Streets of Rage via the genesis emu? Converting some awesome video to SFD for watching? An additional soundtrack of custom music? Beats of Rage and some mods for it? SamSho2 via AES4all? Utopia bootdisk or DC-X? Tons of puny puzzle games like Bust a Move, Sega Tetris, Swirl, ChuChu? Please give any feedback.

Here's the rough instructions. The stripped down XDP (the English translation of the DreamPassport browser) is available from http://www.marcuspost.com/downloads/XDP.zip It'll be taken down as soon as ComboMasher hosts it.
CM, feel free to test, tweak or rewrite this as you see fit. Im not good with tutorials.
Using the XDP Browser as a boot menu.
______________________________________
These instructions will describe how to use the XDP browser as a boot menu, allowing multiple Dreamcast games on a single disk.
Notes: These steps are for Katana executable with no CDDA. Using these steps for WinCE games and games with CDDA (CD Audio tracks) is possible by modifying the game's entry in the XDP.INI, but I do not know the specific numbers needed.
Download and extract the XDP archive that should be included with these directions. This is the same files included with the most recent (as of Jan 2007) release of XDP, but with many of the extraneous files removed.
If your main work directory is \DATA\, it will look something like this:
\DATA\1ST_READ.BIN
\DATA\XDP.INI
\DATA\DPWWW\XDPDEX.HTML
\DATA\DPETC\*
\DATA\XDPTEX\*
1) Know your LBA. If your usually burn a audio track, like the Echelon selfboot method, go ahead and do so, and get the information cdrecord -msinfo returns. That second number, usually 11700 or 11702, is the LBA the second session will start at. Remember this number.
2) Copy in the games into their own directory. For each game you want to have available, make a new directory in \DATA\. If we wanted CVS2 and MVC2 on the disk, it would look something like this:
\DATA\CVS2\
\DATA\MVC2\
Copy all of the files from the game to the matching directory. ***THE GAME FILES DO NOT GO IN THE ROOT OF THE DISK, ONLY INTO THEIR SUBDIRECTORY***
3)Copy the IP.BIN in the \DATA\ directory (the one that came with the XDP files) to each of the game directories
4)For each game directory, BINHACK the 1ST_READ.BIN, and any other executable files. For CvS2 and MvC2, the 1ST_READ.BIN and the 2_DP.BIN need BINHACK'ed. BINHACK the other executables first, and BINHACK the 1ST_READ.BIN last. ALL of them need BINHACK'ed with the msinfo number (the LBA) from step 1.
5)BINHACK the XDP 1ST_READ.BIN (\DATA\1ST_READ.BIN)
6)Modify the XDP.INI. Here is where you tell XDP which games are going to be selectable. Near the bottom of the XDP.INI should be existing entries for youto work off of. Example:
[Launcher13]
AppUrl='file:/dpwww/xdpdex.html'
AppDir='CVS2'
AppName='1ST_READ.BIN'
AppOS=0
AppDA=3
The heading '[Launcher13]' is the number assigned to the game; You'll need that later. AppUrl is the file that has the link to launch the game. This isn't too important; I think it is just the page to load once the game exits from a soft reset. Just leave it as is. The AppDir is the directory that the game is stored it. The AppName is the executable that runs the game (usually 1ST_READ.BIN). AppOS says if its is a Katana game (0) or WinCE game (1). AppDA is the track number of the first CDDA track for the game.
Extra Launcher entries are just fine; just make sure there is one for every game you are wanting to boot.
7)Modify the XDPDEX.HTML. When the disk boots up, it will display the HTML page XDPDEX.HTML. You can put any normal HTML you may want and make it look as pretty as you please. Links to start games are done with a normal A tag, such as:
<a href="x-avefront://---.dream/proc/launch/13">This is a boring text link to CVS</a>
The number after '/launch/' is the number used in the Launcher heading in the XDP.INI. This link will launch whatever game was described in the [Launcher13] section of the XDP.INI
You can make this HTML by hand, or use any tool you want including Frontpage. I personally find full image maps to be the best looking.
8)Make the ISO and burn. Just like you would for any other game, make an ISO of the game, such as "mkisofs -C 0,11702 -V BOOTMENU -l -o data.iso DATA" Insert the IP.BIN with IPINS.EXE. Burn to the CD, and test.
Other things you can do:
* The default bookmarks are stored in the XDP.INI. You can change or modify them however you wish; the format is simple enough.
* Soft resetting (A+B+X+Y+Start) from a game will not return you to the browser unless you use the 45000 LBA DATA/DATA format for your disc.
* Save games can be included with your disk. Put the .VMI AND .VMS files somewhere in the DPWWW directory, and link to them with a <a href="file:/dpwww/filename.vmi"> type link.
* Look around for various avefront commands. With the right commands in your HTML, you can have some special effects, such as vibration if a purupuru pack is attached, a scrolling message or artwork on the VMU screen, playing .SFD movie files, or the playing of ADX files directly. JeffMa's compilation disks are good examples.

Cynistar can you tell me which method are you using for making this for ps2? I think I have a faster way for doing it (it works, that's the way I did mine using classic vs series music ). Just get Magic ISO software somehow, put your MvC2 game in your cd tray, make an ISO of your game using that, then open it and you'll be able to replace stuff inside the iso, so you can just go into the music folder, delete afs00.afs and then put yours inside and save. Then burn that iso with alcohol 120 or nero and it'll always work ( of course, only if your custom .afs file is the same size of the original & the music quality is also the same of the original....that's why ps2 MvC2 music change sucks :( )

I just tried using the muitple LBA copying program I linked to: I can't get it to work at all. Sorry. That leave us with either using Linux, or Cygwin.
So here's some steps on how to do it with Cygwin. The idea is the same as in linux, but I'll try to lessen the amound of command line stuff. First, a script to do the hard work for you:
<-------------Cut Here---------------->
#!/bin/bash
find . | xargs md5sum > md5sumslist
cat md5sumslist | cut -f1 -d' ' | sort | uniq -d > dupemd5sums
for BLAH in `cat dupemd5sums`
do
grep $BLAH md5sumslist | cut -d'*' -f2 > dupefiles
export ORIGINAL=`head -n1 dupefiles`
grep -v $ORIGINAL dupefiles > extrafiles
for BLECH in `cat extrafiles`
do
rm $BLECH
ln $ORIGINAL $BLECH
done
rm dupefiles
rm extrafiles
done
<-----------------Cut Here----------->
The setup instructions:
1. Install Cygwin if you haven't already. www.cygwin.com
2. Save that as 'dupelink.sh' in your cygwin directory (like C:\cygwin\dupelink.sh)
3. make the script executable- open up a cygwin window, and type 'chmod +x /dupelink.sh'
4. make sure you have the tools youll need. At the cygwin window, type 'ln' and hit enter to see if it gives you a 'command not found' error. Same thing with 'md5sum' 'cdrecord' and 'mkisofs'. If any give the commnd not foud error, you need to install it by running through the cygwin installer again and finding the package you need. If you have mkisofs and/or cdrecord not installed, but somewhere else on your system, you should be able to copy them into c:\cygwin\bin\ and use them fine.
To make the disk
This part can be done entirely in windows. Just pick directory to work in and copy everything you want in there. To keep things easy, use c:\data\. If you're wanting 3 different copies of MvC2, each with different music, go ahead and make 3 subdirectories, copy all of your original MvC2 files into each subdirectory, then replace the ADXs in each one. Yes, that will take up a lot of space on your hard drive, but not for long. Go ahead and work as if your CD-R could hold gigs and gigs. Setup your browser for a boot menu as normal. BINHACK all the executables. Once its all setup to work properly, but is just way too big for a cd-r, then you're ready to build the disk in cygwin.
1. Open a cygwin window
2. 'cd c:' #to change directory to the c: drive
3. 'cd data' #to change directory to the data directory
4. '/dupelink.sh' # to run the script. This might take a little bit depending on how large your directory it
5. 'rm md5sumslist dupemd5sums dupefiles extrafiles' #get rid of the files used by dupelink.sh
6. 'cd c:' # leave the data directory
7. 'mkisofs -V GoldenStillAintPaidShit -C x,y -o data.iso -cache-inodes data' #replace x and y with the proper values
Burn your first session, IPINS the data.iso, and burn the data.iso.
If you want to change this to work on linux, you'll want to change the parameters to the two 'cut' commands in the scripts; different diff's show their output different ways.

does this song change method work for street fighter 3: double impact or dead or alive 2?
can anyone confirm this?

I just tried using the muitple LBA copying program I linked to: I can't get it to work at all. Sorry. That leave us with either using Linux, or Cygwin.
So here's some steps on how to do it with Cygwin....
Ok mate so I'll be making tons of adx's for a couple of days and I'll tell you how things go along ;) Thanx a lot :D

double impact doesnt seem to use ADX's, so nope. DOA2 has a single AFS files (named as an ADX for some dumb reason) that has a couple of songs in it, but I can't seem to crack it open or repack it properly.
Sorry, your SOL on those two games.
sup dawg! just got back from vacation early this week, man i tried your setup you posted and couldn't get it to work, i think i missed something, i'm gonna give it another shot this weekend and i'll post my results G!

Ok Toodles here it comes:
Just for a try I did 2 folders from the same game (MvC2) using different adx's each. tried the command /dupelink.sh and this is what I always get:

in the cygwin window, type 'cat /dupelink.sh'
also, in the cygwin window, do 'cd /cygdrive/c/Data/' The directory you're in is lowercase, and case does matter to cygwin. Hitme up on IM if you need to.

You were right, cat /dupelink.sh worked :) Now the 2nd command doesn't get rid of the files, they all say (md5sumslist dupemd5sums dupefiles and extrafiles) 'no such file or directory' :( Sorry if I'm being a pain in the ass, it's just I dunno linux stuff too much.

eh? 'cat /dupelink.sh' should have just typed it on the screen; I wanted you to screen shot it so I could see what it looked like. If the 'rm md5sumlist blah blah blah' gives you the 'no such file or directory', don't worry about it. That's not a problem.

A couple of notes found out today:
1. Trying to use Cygwin for linking will NOT work if you try it on a FAT32 drive. Do it on a NTFS drive.
2. If you don't want to bother with saving the linking script, just cut and paste it into cygwin. Yes, it take a long time to run. Deal.
3. The XDP browser for making a menu works on Chankast. ;)

This is how vcurrently I'm having all adx' files in the sort file:
data/01vs/adx_capl.bin -8000
data/01vs/adx_cont.bin -8000
data/01vs/adx_here.bin -8000
You think -8000 is a good weigh value or I need sth else?
Toodles
01-29-2007, 12:38 PM
Should be fine. The number doesn't really matter, except compared to other numbers. If all of your ADXs are set to -8000, and all the rest of your files set to 1000, the disk will look the exact same as if the ADXs were set to 999 and the rest of the files set to 1000. Mkisofs goes through the sort file, finds the highest number, puts it into the ISO, and then repeat. It doesn't give a damn what the actual number is.
Mr.Q®

Just tried and the sort file + a dummy too and didn't make a difference :/, I don't think anything else can be done I suppouse, Thanx anyways man, I'll upload this somehwere for sharing :)

Just a comment though, I couldn't manage to link the files on linux, so i figured a way to do it on windows and it actually worked. I remade Magnetro's disk and just used linux to run mkisofs since it doesn't seem to like linked files. So there we go. :P
Toodles
01-29-2007, 06:08 PM
In order to get linking to work using cygwin, you need to make sure the filesystem you're building on is NTFS. Linking doesnt work if its tried on a FAT32 drive. Second, use the '-cache-inodes' argument to mkisofs when building the ISO.

Wow I tried to get the XDP browser bootable with no luck. First disc kept resseting at the sega screen and the second disc goes white after the sega screen. Back to square one.
Toodles
01-29-2007, 10:16 PM
The sega screen comes up when the DC is reading the IP.BIN, so you did do the IPINS properly. You'll usually see that the problem is related to one of the following:
1. IP.BIN isn't pointing to the right executable (1ST_READ.BIN in this case)
2. 1ST_READ.BIN isn't BINHACK'ed to the right msinfo/LBA number.
3. ISO isn't made to start at the right msinfo/LBA number.
4. ISO wasn't made right (1ST_READ.BIN not in the root directory)
5. Corrupt 1ST_READ.BIN
Pop the disk in your PC. If you can see the files, the you know #3 isn't the problem. Looking at the disk appears right (1ST_READ.BIN in the root directory along with XDP.INI and the others), then you can scratch off #4 from the list. If you have a way of comparing two files, you can re-BINHACK the 1ST_READ.BIN to the right number and see if it is different from the one on the disk to check #2 and #1. You can copy the 1ST_READ.BIN from a known good source to check #5.
The best thing to do until you get the hang of it is to use a CD-RW in your drive, and test it out in Chankast. Chankast boots this browser just fine. If you're having problems, dont worry about the booting games yet, just get the browser by itself to boot and show you the XDPDEX.HTML and the time (theres a clock in the lower right). After you get that down, start adding games. If you muff it up, wipe the disk and try it again.

I can see the files in my PC,I have all the correct files in the directory (DPTEC-DPFONT-DPWWW-MVC2-XDPTEX-1st_read.bin-ip.bin-maigo.bin-sg_dpldr.bin-xdp.ini), and lastly i copied the 1st read from a working MVC2 custom I had already made a while back.
I need to buy some cdrdubs but for the meantime Ill try a few cdRs since I dont wanna go to walmart this late.....
edit:When I tried the 1st_read from my own custom it reset back to the main menu. I go the splash then the sega screen then main menu......

Uh, please tell me you are not chaning the 1st_read.bin in the root of the disk; you should be using the 1st_read.bin from the XDP package I put up. I assume this is what you did, because changing the 1st_read.bin in the mvc2 directory would have NO affect on how the browser boots up, because it hasnt gotten to the part when the browser loads the HTML.
IP.BINs are (mostly) interchangable. 1st_read.bins are NOT interchangable. They are the actual program/game you want to run.

I tried the 1st read from my custom only after I failed using the supplied one with XDP. Wait I know what I was doing wrong. When I would use IPINS.EXE the IP that was inserted wasnt from what I was using. It was from somewhere else. I used the one that was in the DATA dir of the XDP package and it now boots with my custom MVC2. :looney:

If you're wanting some kind of intro using the browser, putting in a video (SFD format) or a flash can be displayed by the browser. If you want something more hard core like the Echelon intro on the Garou:MOTW rip, sorry, I got no clue.

things I didn't think to point out #173:
Don't go crazy with directory names. Keep it to 8 characters, uppercase for simplicity's sake. It look like Metrock's major problem was spaces in the directory names caused the script to bomb.
The 'no boot image specified' seems because the version of mkisofs doesn't have the '-cache-inodes' option built in (old version). If you run 'mkisofs -help' youll get a list of all of the command switches it takes. Double check if '-cache-inodes' is on the list, and get a new version if it isnt

Sorry Dawg i wast sure on how the names are on the joliet system. This guy Toodles is amazing. He helped me thru the process and actually was a cool guy.
'mkisofs -V GoldenStillAintPaidShit -C x,y -o data.iso -cache-inodes -b IP.BIN -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 data'
I used this extra to finally make the not boot image specified error go away. Dont ask me exactly what it means or what it does. It worked and I was able to make the image wich was good for burning.

I've asked this question in a different thread, and was referred to this one. Anyway, here it is:
I've tried to make a custom version of CVS2 for the Dreamcast, following the instructions given on this site (http://dhost.info/combomasher/customcvs2/index.html), but to no avail... I have a burned copy that I manage to get my hands on, but it has no IP.BIN. I've tried to create one like the site instructed, but that failed as well... I'd like to know where I can get an IP.BIN, as well as a 1st_read.bin that would go with it... Can you help me?
P.S. I've also noted that the Page for Custom MVC2's has both the 1st_read.bin and IP.BIN located in the downloads section. Why doesn't the CVS2 section have that?
