View Full Version : Anyone play Hori Real Arcade?

I was wondering if anyone in Japan has play tested this thing. The reason is, I need a stick for a party this weekend and if the hori isnt that much greater I will just buy the cvs chaos stick with 2 day shipping instead of buying the hori tommorow with next day 23 dollar shipping. Thanks

Also how is the Hori with 2D fighters. I saw a review on ncsx where the guy had a hell of a time doing half circles. Anyone else have this issue?

I want to know this as well...I'm on vacation in Asia right now and today I checked and it's not out yet. For the ones that has it already...how different does it feel from the Fighting Stick 2?

I guess it officially comes out tommorrow but Lik Sang said today so I was hoping some people already had it. Hopefully people will let us know today. :) How is your fighting stick 2 with 2d fighters. I heard the sammy stick is great with 2d that is why I can't decide :(

Hori Fighting Stick 2 is awesome.
Half circles were actually easier since you dont need as much movement to do them but maybe the guy wasnt used to a square gate. Tiger knee movements were definately easier to do because of the square gate.
What may be decieving is that it's sturdier than it looks.

what the hell, on the ncsx site it says pre order will ship on 29th then when I email them they say it might arrive at their store today or tommorrow. I payed 27 dollars to have it on Friday. I would have payed for 3 day shipping if it wouldn't matter. It better arrive in their store today or there will be hell to pay.

Those Xbox adapters are indeed at Wal-Mart. Just look in the peripherals section. $12.44 is their "everyday low price"
Keep your reciept, I bought a brand new one that didn't work. Took it back, got another one, works fine!!!

I had NCS ship mine via Express mail so I got mine around noon today. Haven't had a whole lot of time to play around with it but it's certainly sturdy. As for the actual stick...frankly I can't tell a lot of difference between it and the better console sticks like the Hori Namco and Tekken 4 sticks, but then again I haven't had a lot of time to use it like I said. It's definitely a square guide, which makes sense seeing as how most of the sticks in actual Japanese arcades use square gates and this stick is made for hardcore arcade fighter players. I played around vs the AI in HSF2 on Turbo 3 (good way to test how good a stick is since you have to get those pinch DPs out vs the CPU heh) and those last second DPs did seem to come out a bit easier. Other than that, not much to tell from my end.

Sorry, no digicam. I did open it up to try to see the stick, but the entire internal contents are housed in some plastic enclosure I couldn't see how to open, so who knows what's in there. No way to confirm if the stick is a Sanwa or not

I finnally had the chance to buy it today at a gaming store in Hong Kong, for only $60 US ($470 HKD). This stick is so damn badass, the exact feel as the stick at the Japanese arcade cabinets. I can pull off shoryuken's real easily, half circles and 360's/720's are just a piece of cake, great ass stick! I've never got the Fighting Stick 2 or any other stick from Hori, but I must say that this one is definetly worth it.

so the square restrictor doesn't impede your ability to do half circles and full circles? interesting...

I don't really see how it is difficult to do half circles and 360's on a square restrictor (or whatever it is). Can do Hurricane Upper easily, and some walking SPD's.
Sorry, I don't have an Xbox in Hong Kong, I can only try it out when I get back from my vacation. (end of August)

damn. it's sold out at ncsx and they raised the price to $95 for non-preorders. what was the original price at ncsx?
lik-sang has it for $79 + $57 for shipping and play-asia has it for $79 + $59 for shipping. even at the raised price, the shipping at ncsx is so much cheaper that it'd still cost less to get it from them.

What moves exactly? 360's? 720's?
And dashs come out quick i presume, since its short shaft. What about stuff like ShoShoSho, does it feel easier?

Every move is easy to pull out, 360's are extremely easy, walking 720's takes a little practice, but I got it after a few tries (I've never used any wrestlers before). But if buffer into 720, then it's just as easy as doing a 360.
And dashs come out quick i presume, since its short shaft. What about stuff like ShoShoSho, does it feel easier?
Dashes are quick of course, I never use A-groove or use Sakura, so I don't know is it suppose to be easy, but I did try it and I got like 75% of the CC of my first try, so I can say it's not that hard.
Have you tried to see if you can parry last minute shit easily? Come on man, give us indepth info!
Parrying anything sudden is just as simple as doing it on an american stick, is just that I don't need to put more 'effort' parrying with the Sanwa.
Err some other info...
CvS2 - I tried doing some RC Sonic Booms, and it was easier then I thought. And I can spam Sonic Boom's one after another, charging seems to be really easy. As I said, I tried doing ShoShoSho which wasn't that hard as well.
HSF2 - Last minute Shoryuken's came out nice and quick. I have no problem doing Guile's super (I did when I used the American stick). Double fireball motion supers came out really easy as well, no problems at all.
3S - Parrying like I said, was easier and more relaxed (IMO). Canceling moves into Ken's SA3 wasn't too hard. EX moves were of course easy. Sorry no info on Kara-Throwing, since I didn't accomplish on learning it.
You might see that I don't find anything negative about the stick...well the reason is that this stick is pretty damn perfect. I'm so used to playing on the Japanese Astro City cabinets, so maybe that's why I don't have any trouble doing any moves on the stick.
If you're used to the American sticks and never used a Sanwa before, your review will probably be different than mines. So yeah, overall this stick is the really the best stick out so far (IMO).
10/10

If this is a standard Sanwa (as it looks to be)...you might be able to swap in an octagonal restrictor on it. Has anyone tried this?
This looks clean from the inside pics, it looks like this might be the most customizable out of the box stick yet.
I want to see how this stacks up against a modded Namco...
BTW, what are all those little levers for near the stick? Turbo and other stuff???
DevilJin 01
08-04-2004, 10:04 AM
Yeah, they're just turbo, slow mo functions. Stuff like that.
OK, quick inpressions.
I played MvC2 for DC and Xbox.
If you like the green goblin, this stick is perfect. Everything comes out nice and cleanly, a bit big though.
Also, I can confirm that it works with the Innovation brand adapters that I have. PS2>DC and PS2>Xbox
I will try to get pics of the adapters later.

I also have recieved the stick, and I must say, it is by far the best out of the box, mass produced stick I have ever played on. Also, I dabble in stick modding and it looks to be far easier than any other stick I have ever dealt with. Now for the game by game:
VF: my main game, didn't miss a step, throw escape, or combo at any point during my VF session.
CVS2: again, very easy to do combos, very easy to do dp, pretzel, SNK motion, etc. Square base does not get in the way at all of ANY of the motions.
GGXX: very clean inputs, gatlings are supremely easy as are OTG moves and the like
now for a little bit off games:
R Type Final: this stick works great for it
FF7: I even enjoy playing RPG's on it
in summation, awesome stick, best mass produced ever IMO, even if you get it and don't like it right away, you can mod it very easily (some soldering knowledge and parts required). Definitely recommended.

on a related note, i had previously ordered from lik-sang. they e-mailed me yesterday (wednesday) and told me that they were out (even though their web page says they have it in stock). they were pretty cool about canceling my order.
Just got the stick a few days ago, love it, although still adjusting to the square base (having issues doing dps on 1p side), but that'll be fixed with time. One minor concern/annoyance though is that all the play buttons aside from select and start are quite loose, they don't lift from the actual board but turn and wiggle in the sockets very easily, is this normal, are yours like this? Also I was thinking of using some form of rubber-glue type adhesive to stabilize the buttons (since the buttons are apparently not attached by any screws inside the unit), would you guys recommend this? I'm just a little hesitant because I know once the adhesive is applied it's going to be a pain to remove if I ever changed my mind and I don't want to ruin a great stick.

I just played this new Hori and it's the best stick I've ever used and now I must buy another Hori for when company comes over. I was so awed by how much better it is than the stick I made, I couldn't play well:(
Why's it better than the stick I made?...
1. It's so big, my hands can rest comfortably on it.
2. It's so big, I don't have to keep my legs so close together to use it in my lap.
3. The Sanwa stick sits lower, so I dont have to strain myself to use it.
4. It's quiet.
I must now retool my custom stick:bluu:

i got this stick on fmj's advice, and i don't plan on beating him up anymore.. so the stick is great! ;]
its also very easy to work on inside, matter of fact you could easily make custom sticks using the box for it.. all you would need to do really is make your layout in sheet metal or thin plexi ;]
but there is a shitload of space inside.. i had to switch my buttons around to use my ps2->dc adapter better.. and it only took me like 15 minutes from start to finish.. biggest problem was realizing i needed a safety pin to disconnect the wires from the buttons.
thankz fmj and andy.. this stick is awesome..

Just want to say it's great that Hori put out this stick. Everyone so far including me loves it. I also love the fact that even though this stick uses microswitch they are very quiet compared to others. I recommend you get them before there gone.

My buttons are loose as well. My advice though is to not worry about it. The adhesive thing sounds like a bad idea and anyway I have no problems with the buttons anyway.

I'm pretty sure they're suppose to be loose, and I don't find any problems with it at all. All of the buttons of the Astro City cabinets I use has the same loose buttons, and I think it's actally pretty good. So I wouldn't suggest you guys to do anything to the buttons for now.

Got mine just right now.
Did anyone else who ordered from ncsx get a cardboard box that said 'OMNIMUSHA3 CONTROLLER' on it? HAHHAAH HILARIOUS.
I'll try it out (I play 3s) and give you guys my .02...as if this thread didn't have enough.
Yes, mine came in the same box.

Just tried it for about 45 min.
I've only played square gates once before, so I had to get used to it. Still not used to it  At least tigerknee motions are dead easy
Stick is a lot lighter than I thought, totally off from the hardass american sticks. That was expected I guess.

Got mine in today, great for 3-D games. :)
Is anyone having problems with the controller part itself? Sometimes on mine it won't go left or up.
Also, anyone know how to fix it? I really don't want to send it out.

Can anybody please tell me the order of the buttons on the top?
From the images I think it is
L1 Square Triangle R1
L2 Cross Circle R2
Is that right?
Well, the Square Triangle things don't really matter, but the L1, L2, R1, R2 things do to me because I plan on using it for PS2, Computer, and GameCube, and my GameCube adapter makes L1 and R1 both the Z button...That is why I want them separated :P

Hrm...
Since this stick is pretty close to what arcades use, do I really need tools if I wanted to replace joysticks (or at least to replace that gadarn square gate) and buttons? And is switching the buttons out for sanwa really worth it? To me a button is a button and can't see further from there. I need enlightenment.

The stick is excellent, and the buttons are also great. Swapping them for Sanwa ones would be a waste of money, as the differences are neglible.
As for replacing the gate, all you need is a philips screwdriver and a ratchet for removing nuts. Dunno the sizes but I took mine apart as soon as I took it outta the box to have a look, as well as to remove the damn plastic cover over the surface that got caught under the buttons and screwheads.

Swapping any of Hori's other arcade stick (Namco, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur) buttons would be a bigger waste of money because these buttons on the Real Arcade Pro diffinately aren't as senesitive as Sanwa's or the aformentioned Hori stick buttons.
I swapped the furthermost 6 on the right so, I know the difference.

I'm having some problems pulling off moves using the stick, its not that the stick is broken or anything but I feel restricted when I feel the square plate. Is it easy to swap gates? And if anybody has switched gates a guide would be very helpfull.
Same question. I have no soldering knowledge but would like to replace the square gate for an octogonal one. Also the buttons I would like to replace with Sanwas. Any soldering needed to be done on those?

Regarding the gate swapping, from square to octogonal. It's a snap. Literally!:p
All you have to do is unsnap the square gate that's already there off of the four small tabs (carefully!) and then snap the new one right into place.
Just take care because with Sanwa sticks, it's the gate that actually holds everything in place. So make sure that it all doesn't fall out on you as you swap them.;)

I'm interested in the stick, I have a few questions directed at the guys who own it:
1. The stick and buttons are both Sanwa?
2. Will it work witha Total Control 2 and convert the buttons to a standard capcom six setup?? (I need R1 and L1 to be on top of each other...)
3. IF it isn't set up to work right away with a DC adapter, are the wires easy to clip off, or are they soldered?
4. (same as queston 3)
L1 Sq Tr R1
L2 X O R2
or
R2 Sq Tr R1
L2 X O L1

I received mine today, so far its very impresive. i play 3s in the arcade pretty much every day (anyone see a guy in a suit in the trocadero in london playing 3s, thats me). So im quite used to the square gate, but found the plastic bit coveriting the stick pole bit a little odd :)
buttons arent quite as nice as i would hope, so where can i get some sanwa ones to replace it with (to UK)
cheers guys
oh and has anyone else found they cant get all the plastic from the the bolts off lol, fucking tiny bits still there
Take it apart to get the last of the plastic off.

Well, my stick is broken already. Seems like the one of the pins in the controller that goes into the controller port has been knocked in.
Can anybody help with this?

CAUTION : This message will contain copious use of the words 'knob'
'screw' and 'shaft' This is not for humuorous purposes even
though it will appear as such, this really is a serious
question.
Anyway, I have a couple of these wonderful sticks, but I have a problem.
The knob keeps coming unscrewed while I'm playing, so inbetween rounds
on 3S I'm having to screw it back on all the time. When this occured with
my old Namco sticks I just put some super glue on the shafts thread and
held the shaft with some pliers while I tightened the knob on.
Now with the sanwa stick on this one, it has that black plastic cover on
the shaft, at first I thought this was to prevent the user from
unscrewing the knob by mistake (or on purpose) but I seem to have managed
it anyway, so, here's my question. How do I tighten it? I cannot grasp
the shaft firmly with the cover on and I don't want to glue it on because
I may want to open it again. It just makes me wonder, if it was normally this easy to remove the knob, wouldn't every arcade in the country have
them missing? So what the answer? how do the pros do it? Please let me
know.
PHEW! What a thing to have to type on my first foray into these forums!
Please don't take offence at the phrasing, I'm a little ashamed myself!

Just got mine today, gods it freaking ROCKS. Handles like the dreamcast stick and everyone's opinions pretty much match mine, except about the buttons. I like em too, except the select/start placement, kinda wierd. Oh well.
I've got a new baby ^-^

marler:
You must unscrew it from the bottom, then remove the nuts from the carriage bolts and after access to the Sanwa is granted, hold the shaft stationary with a flat-head screw driver and tighten the ball by hand.

So if the stick is sold out at Lik-sang does anyone know a site where I can order it and have it by next week for a console tourney? Also what dc converter can be used with the stick?

What would be cheapest overall? I'm sorry without the search function and with a crappy attention span it is hard for me to search everywhere. I've looked through all the posts but I noticed someone mentioned 50$ shipping(!?!?!) but then the next person had 8$ shipping... why is this?

Thanks for the advice shinhed, now I just have to find the right ratchet
for those bolts, must be easier on an arcade machine, less dismantling
to do.
The size I used on the bolts was 9/16 I believe.

I got one of these bad boys in for our collection of sticks.
It's nice with a JLF Sanwa in there and plays as expected for a large plastic based joystick with some good parts.
1) the buttons are not Sanwa but clones (hori)
2) the spacing is odd. It could have been more toward the right for the joystick. Start/Select are too close for MVC mashers.
3) It's too tall. Maybe it's supposed to look substantial but why did it have to be so tall. The Namco is so elegant with the slanted low body. This heavy stick should follow suit.
4) it's the square gate as Japanese prefer them. I'm sure a GT-Y will fit easily.
6) It's a nice weight and plays well and accurate.
7) it even has the shaft cover kit.
8) hard core fighting game accessory? why the need for turbo buttons.

Can The Joystick Be Tightened?
Joysticks use springs. By streching the springs inside the joystick, you can make any joystick tighter. So, the answer is yes.

anyone heard any more info on them releasing this in the US?
Yo Sup All.
Was wondering what is the major difference between

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-70-2ww.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-m-70-5w3.html
2nd one is what this thread is for.
Are they the same material or whatever? Im looking to get like
2-3 sticks mayb so cost is an issue.
And could anyone show me a link or give me details about sawna sticks over american?
I have trouble doing srks and shit like that on american sticks for some stupid reason  .

1. The second one is better
2.This thread is about the second joystick you posted (the green one)
3. I guess the are made of the same material, but the second one is heavier and more durable, from what I have read.
4. If you have trouble doing dp's, then this stick might be better for you. Or perhaps a P360.
KojiroSon

the difference between the two sticks is
1: the HRAP is made of better materials than the SVC stick.
2: the HRAP is far looser feeling (stickwise) than the SVC stick which is closer to the feel of the GGXX stick (very tight).
3: the SVC stick has an octagonal restrictor plate while the HRAP has a square guide.
4: the HRAP is more durable as far as travel is concerned (trust me on this one).
5: the HRAP HAS TURBO SWITCHES!!! OMG TURBO LOL -_-;;
6: the HRAP is larger in size being almost twice as big as the SVC stick.
7: the buttons on the SVC stick are tighter feeling, closer to american style buttons I'd say.
8: the HRAP is far more easily modable as the SVC stick goes with the direct soldering of the buttons onto the PCB as opposed to the HRAP having slip off connectors.
9: anything else I can't think of would all be aesthetic stuff (the SVC stick has Kyo and Ryu pics respectively and the HRAP has a shiny mirror like background).
