When I saw the first picture of that group I said to myself "Oh no." If any of you have ever played the game Wrestlefest and hit someone with the steps on the outside of the ring, the announcer says "Oh no!" in this voice of pure dread. That's exactly how I sounded.
Seeing that last picture of that group, it really captures the essence of the sadness. The Guile in the back is just atrocious. It's like they're all guys, but they're all females at the same time. The most androgenous group of youngsters I've seen ever.
On the other hand, those cosplay females were pretty good. My casting call for Mai over Yoko would be Harumi Nemoto when it comes to unaturally natural physiques.

So what if it was two guys playing on a video game screen? We cant cheer for them just like people cheer for people that play Foot Ball,Basket Ball or any other competetive game?
I will stand up and cheer and I dont care if people say im an idiot for doin so,its just how it was meant to be.
The real question is,who is the real idiot? A guy that goes on a fighting game website where 90% of the members have much love and respect for the games, yet calls them idiots but downloads, and posts and even brings the video to his work to get some laughs, or someone that is a member of the forum that stands up and cheers because the match was good?
Seriously,if you're gonna call the players who have much respect for the game that they were cheering on idiots, then why the hell are you on a fighting game website in the first place?
This isnt a flame ( and if you thought it was,go shoot yourself ).
Its just my two cents on your umm..posts/and/or opinions.

They 2 Undeniable Truths to this thread;
1: That is NOT in any way a person cosplaying Guile/Charlie.
2: Cosplay that's done well(the GG pics) are admirable. The initial pic is... is... >_<
Also, that one girl doesn't really 'fill out' the Mai character. Just my opinion.
Ichijo
08-15-2004, 07:33 PM
"Go shoot yourself" and "who's the real idiot" not flames, huh? Yeah, good one.
The real idiot is the one who has no perspective. Spending big cash traveling somewhere to play video games or worse yet to watch people play video games is in no way a superior or less pathetic pastime than getting dressed up as a character from the game and hanging out with people who like to do the same. I downloaded the video at work because people were raving about it and I laughed heartily at it. Being a nice guy I shared the joy. I'm impressed by the skill but not by the amount of time and money that must have been spent building it. The whole thing struck me as nerdy. The crowd was just the icing on the cake.
Posting on these forums is a nice breather from my job, but for me playing games is a hobby, not a lifestyle. Sorry if my take on the fighting game tourney scene bugs you. You don't see anyone apologizing to any cosplayers who might frequent the site. Seriously, "cosplayers look like idiots except for hot females?" Give me a break. Something dumb is dumb, and that chick wearing a push up bra doesn't change the fact that she looks nothing like Sol Badguy. So please, if you really don't care if you get called an idiot don't bother preaching to me. You aren't going to change my mind any more than I'm going to change the dumbass double standards of a bunch of horny hypocrites.

So you would rather watch horribly done cosplay than be entertained by people that are playing video games?
And from your post, you wouldnt happen to be a cosplayer, would you?
Did you see all those people standing up and cheering at that Daigo vs. Wong 3rd Strike match? Trust me, you all look like idiots. I got great mileage showing that around at work. Lots of laughs.
Nice try. You'll get laughs from ignorance since they know nothing of the games or the intelligence it takes to play them. Cosplay isn't a competition. It's masquerading.
Let me make it clear. SF may be funny to those that don't understand it but these cosplay pics? We understand exactly what's goin' on and are still laughing. If you're friends at work could comprehend what was going on at Evo those laughs woulda been accompanied by a loud "Holy Shit!!!" That's a totally different KIND of "Holy Shit!" than you get from looking at these pics.
Any kind of tight competition I've witnessed ends with cheers. Take your pick. Yup, completely normal. The only difference here is that your co-workers are ignorant in the matter. All they see is a bunch of peeps cheering for a video game being played.
To me, it's bizarre that you'd equate the 2. Now if Smash Bros were at Evo and the crowd erupted over a Mario combo...ok, you'd have a point.

It's two guys sitting in front of a TV playing a game for God's sake. So, if I showed some footage of people playing football to people who have NEVER seen or played football in their lives, that would make football stupid, right?
Same with baseball, hockey, basketball, or any other sport for that matter. Yeah, those "Sports" are just games too, you know. GAMES.
Oh oh oh! And let's not forget about Chess either. They are after all just sitting there playing a GAME.
Also, go and tell the Koreans that, let's see what they say. I'm sure that stadium full of Koreans cheering for boxer to win at a StarCraft *REALLY* felt/looked stupid.
Personally, when I saw that, I thought it looked like any other major sport event. I thought it was cool as hell that the Koreans had taken it to that level. It just shows that they take certain "games" more seriously than others.

My advice would be to ignore people who post things like "You shouldn't derive joy when someone else succeeds." I'm an independent professional wrestler and when people in the crowd aren't cheering or responding, there's something wrong with the match. If people don't cheer that means they aren't interested, they won't come back, and there's no reason to put on a show. Essentially, people cheering for Daigo being awesome are just like fans at a wrestling match, or any sports event. They might also dabble in their interest/hobby, but for the most part, they are not of professional level. Without marks the world would be a dull place.

No I've never even contemplated going to a dress up convention, so that's not why I'm pointing the finger. Nice try at doing the exact same thing in reverse, though. I just find it funny how people rag on one nerdy activity over another. For the record I know exactly how much skill is on show in that vid and I pointed it out to another gameplayer, but the fact is it still makes me laugh. In fact knowing just how much time and effort players like Daigo must lavish on the game just makes it all the more hilarious. Or sad. I can't decide which. Either way it doesn't make me want to cheer.
And I don't equate video game tourneys to cosplaying. Just their worth. Both are the exact same thing. People getting out and sharing a common interest. Surely that's why you guys go to tourneys. You don't have a hope of winning against these players.
Cheering at chess is funny. I don't see cheering at Starcraft as being a whole other level, but it's still funny.
P.S. I'm not getting into the fighting games are a sport argument. There was a thread about this already. Suffice to say I don't consider mad joystick skillz a sport any more than I consider dressage to be. Yes, I'm aware it's at the Olympics. It's still crap.

I have a different perspective because I'm not a video-game player. I have absolutely no interest in sitting on a couch and playing all day long. That is the problem with recent games. They accent manual dexterity while they used to accent strategy foremost. That is what is cheer worthy. If you need great timing and skill under-pressure to employ that strategy, it's even more hot. Like tennis, boxing, mma, ping pong, etc. I just don't see that as something to scoffingly laugh at since, it takes something superior to perform in this way. I see ppl stand up and cheer and lucky bs in boxing. A clear stroke of random luck and, as long as it produces a knockdown, the crowd goes wild. I'm trying to illustrate that less than intelligent ppl will cheer for ANYthing. SF is cheering skill, heart, determination and calm under pressure. Understanding that, I wouldn't be watching the match for a laugh but instead, to see some serious brainpower competing. However, it is my NSHO that newer games have much more luck involved than previous games. The balance between skill and strategy is off nowadays and clearly favors skill. Since that is the case, tactics win out more often than strategy. That is to say, players can perform tactics, regardless of the intent of the opponent, and the odds are always in their favor. Magneto rushdown is little more than mixing up high low routines just watching for the opponent to mess up their block with a wrong guess. There's no true out-thinking involved. So, nowadays, shit is a lil more pathetic to cheer about, I suppose.
Anyway, I've pinpointed where we don't agree:"In fact knowing just how much time and effort players like Daigo must lavish on the game just makes it all the more hilarious. Or sad. I can't decide which. Either way it doesn't make me want to cheer."
To me, that isn't funny. In this sense, I think SF would be a detriment to society. For me, that's just sad. Now, I still give props to those that place on top but, knowing that they played 40hours a week to do so, at home, I can't be convinced that they're the best even if they win the tourney. Especially if there are players I know that play once a week in the top 5. For me, it's obvious that anyone of them were better but, they weren't willing to put that much time into the game. They are just good. I mean, can't anyone who plays their life away be good? Some would progress faster than others but, infinite time spent on practice would lead ANYone to be good. Yet another problem of accenting joystick skill with strategy. Afterall, what's more useful in other areas of your life? Strategy or joystick skill. Wait! Don't answer that!(I almost walked into a bad one there). Anyway, point being, playing too much is pathetic to me. Hey, I've done it before, too. I'm not trying to insult anyone. And ain't nuttin' pathetic about taking home a few G for 1 weekends worth of gaming...unless, of course, you spent over half of the last years' hours on the games. Not a good return. It's better to be 5th place, among the best, while using the majority of your time for more worthwhile pursuits such as school, work, relationships, etc. If a car race happened and I found out the winners car required twice as much gas as the second car, to compete, the the 2nd car is obviously better. That's why, for me, the most interesting time to watch players are when they are older. This is where the true player comes out. You don't have time to spend 24/7 on games so, your natural processes are more necessary. Imagine seeing just how good Justin will be on the newer games in a few years when he doesn't practice more than once a week like your average player. That'll be interesting to see. Watching Eddie Lee make a "comeback" and taking out Daigo on CvS2 is some hot shit. I'm quite sure that Eddie plays less than he used to when he was recognized as EC champ. Still, he defeats Daigo who plays much more than he does and also has the best training ground imaginable for cvs2. Ppl may not have noticed much but, right there Eddie clearly showed that he was one of the best SF players ever. Practice time isn't paramount for him. Dude could take a crash course and get up to speed in the last month before Evo and still dominate. He's just good. Not superiorly trained(through umpteen hours of practice). When I watch, I'm looking for the superior mind and not the guy who can pull off the hottest combo. A dancer has as much, if not more, muscle memory and clearly better control over their body. I find reflexes great to watch on SF though. Still, there's nothing special about the joystick and your hands. Still, tons of players oogle at obscene combos. Not to be insulting, but I don't get those peeps. All in all, constant playing leads me to believe that SF is the person's whole life. That's not funny to me. That's just sad. Life is full of unlimited experiences and some would choose to waste life on just one. It's just sad to me.
"And I don't equate video game tourneys to cosplaying. Just their worth. Both are the exact same thing. People getting out and sharing a common interest. Surely that's why you guys go to tourneys. You don't have a hope of winning against these players."
Both aren't the same thing. You are basing that analysis on such a superficial aspect. It's not merely about sharing a common interest. It's about competition. Dog eat dog, every man for himself. Hell, we cheer for Golf and the hole isn't even fighting back! It's just sitting there, yet, we have to be uber quiet when they strike, lol. Daigo did that shit with a thousand ppl screaming in his ear. Overcoming Justin who was too much for even Roah to handle. It's the difference between walking a few miles and climbing up a mountain that's miles high. I'm not going to go deeper. I have to believe that you can see that cosplay and fighting game contests are clearly different things. Just because ppl dress up as fighting game characters doesn't relate the groups. The acts and purposes are on totally different levels. Sewing up an outfit at home and playing against someone are very different acts. To me, this shit should be obvious. The comparison is the funniest thing to laugh at.
Then again, I also don't think cheering at chess is funny, usually. That shit can get pretty intense mentally. It's only funny when you realize that most of the crowd doesn't have any clue about what's going on because the players, themselves, are so beyond them in their understanding of the game. It's not like that with SF. Well, it is, but not so much so nowadays.
I'm at a loss to understand how they aren't miles apart from eachother.

Great post.
I think where you said you'd pinpointed we don't agree is actually where we agree most of all. Being insanely good at the game at the expense of insane amounts of time just isn't cool to me.
I think where we really differ is how we view the scene as a whole. Precious few people actually need to go to California to find competition. If being the best of the best was what it was about Daigo would have stayed in Japan. It may be for money. It may be social. But it's not competition alone.
Someone got their ass kicked at the local arcade.
Lost a credit on a game you mean. If it was genuine ass kicking I might take it a little more seriously.

Ichijo's opinions don't even matter people.
You're on the wrong website bub.
You can say whatever you want, you're allowed to have your opinion, but remember opinions cannot be defined as true or false because they are based on personal feelings and not facts. However, people, just like protons, electrons, and what have you, become charged particles when exposed to certain stimuli, such as music. People start dancing around because the music triggers a response in their brain that makes them want to move around.
Your overwhelming self control would be most impressive to not even crack a smile or shed a tear, but there is an uncontrollable feeling inside you when you understand the situation and can appreciate what it took to get to the moment in time, and by not releasing that with some kind jubilation, you're just denying yourself a human right. And who said video gaming was a sport? I must have missed that post.
Ichijo's "argument" is the :lame:est I've seen in a long, long time, and it has no basis in reality. I don't care what your view is on the topic because it doesn't matter at all, not one single bit, but my post is designed to make others understand that it's ok to cheer for people who are good at what they do in case they are even slightly persuaded into thinking they are sad.
On a side note, I also love when people take figurative language literally, because it's so DUMB! :D
OK I'm officially bored of this topic.

The sad part is you don't seem to see the irony of claiming no opinion is right or wrong, and then in the same breath telling people what opinions matter, what websites they belong on, and what is or isn't okay to do. My "argument" was merely an anecdote and it was based firmly in reality I assure you. If reality is "lame" to you then I guess that explains a few things.
If I felt the need to cheer I would have. Video games don't do it for me, sorry. Neither does cosplay but that was kind of my point, wasn't it?

Not so bored anymore...
You called people idiots for cheering on a match.
I don't know what else to call that besides a new level of idiotic. When you showed people, were the lots of laughs just from you? Did the other people even understand what you were laughing at exactly? Were they laughing cause you were laughing? This is what I mean when I say no basis in reality. It's one thing not to care about video games and to have them not bring emotion out of you, that's fine, that's your opinion, that's inarguable. But you called them idiots for cheering. That's amazing, and you were comparing it to people talking about other people looking like idiots doing cosplay. If people were cheering on a snail race or something, I would say it looks funny, maybe even call them idiots, but they weren't. They were cheering on a competitive situation when one person took advantage of a mistake to it's fullest, it was like a game winning run based on an error, or in the reverse, a triple play, something extraordinary you don't see everyday.
The bottom line is, your opinion is weak. Thousands, perhaps millions, of people vs you, and that's just for video games. In essence you're saying, don't cheer, or you will look like idiots. If you cheer for people, you're idiots. If you see something that surprises you, and all the people around you, and you all cheer because of it, you look like an idiot.
No, that's not right. Is it the act of cheering? Or the reason for it? Does people being happy offend you? I'm trying to figure it out, because it's not normal to make a comment like that about a large group of people who all feel the same way. Do you understand what I'm getting at? If everyone was cheering, and you got on a microphone and said "You're all a bunch of idiots for cheering for that nonsense video game crap." essentially what you're saying here behind a keyboard backed up by your internet muscles, you'd be thrown out because you could start a riot, and it'd be all against you, because hundreds of people disagree with you, and at that point in time, your opinion would magically be wrong even though it's your opinion. And don't say "Oh they're a bunch of video gamers they can't really fight." just like they can't genuinely kick your ass because they can only do it on a video.
There was no point in making your post about that, it was a bad comparison. Again, if you think making comments like that on an elitest website like shoryuken.com is going to win you any friends, it's not. Saying that YOU don't like to cheer is your opinion, calling people idiots for cheering is not a valid opinion, because it's your opinion on someone else's opinion, and how can their opinion be wrong?

The non-gamers I showed laughed at the idea of cheering for a video game or gamer. The gamers I showed laughed at the idea of cheering for a video game or gamer. Everybody understood what was going on just fine. It was still funny. One of the non-gamers even enjoyed it so much he had me place it on FTP to show to a colleague (a gamer) in another office. So no, they weren't laughing on my account. This is the harsh reality of what people really think, and this is why I said people looked like idiots, because that's what I and, well, everyone I showed it to thought. Go back a few pages to my first post and you might see why I said that and why the tournament and cosplay were put together in the first place. In your own group I'm sure it seems normal and legitimate, but from the outside it looks completely different.

The way I see it is simple:
Saying that all cosplayers are the sime kind of dork is like saying that serious fighting game players and scrubs are the same kind of dork.
In the same way that you got scrubs, newbies, good players and top players, you got people who dress up no matter how bad they or the costume look and those who actually take cosplaying as a serious hobby. I haven't cosplayed myself but I know a couple of friends who have, and they put a good effort on their costumes and they actually look good on their costumes.
I will respect a person who puts a very good effort on his/her costume and the costume shows that effort, in the same way that I respect people like Buktooth and Nuki.
Like everywhere else, there are the good, the bad, and the ugly.

You're right, I don't know what I was thinking, it's completely abnormal to appreciate someone with a skill in something. I'm going to start posting on basketball forums and telling them not to cheer for their heros because all they are doing is running around throwing a ball into a hoop twice the diameter of said ball.
Thanks for clearing this up, my life is crumbling as speak because I've now realized the harsh reality of what people think of people who play video games.
Damn... :(

I dont understand why you all would even bother... if you're a gamer then enjoy it and appreciate it, cos thats who you are... if people actually heeded such backward views then skateboarding wouldnt even have become what it is today. Can you picture those old fogeys from yesteryear telling people who watch skateboarders as wasting their time. Now look at x-games.
who cares what others think?
besides the topic is about lousy cosplay.... my eyes are still stinging... and as a previous person said, if something is done with effort and done good, then even people from the outside looking in will appreciate it... i.e. the first dunk, the first kickflip, the dude who won the ferrari from playing doom (was it?)... you think the guy who won the ferrari gives a damn about what others think?

Yeah, cause doing something you enjoy/your hobby is sad...right...
if you have fun doing it why the hell is it "sad"? I suppose everything you do all the time is "cool" and not "sad". You're one of those people who tend to think that the amount of time YOU spend on games is the perfect amount to have fun, yet not be considered "sad". And you act like people travel to these tourneys for the sole reason of playing games. I know i went to Evo to hang out with friends i havent seen in a while. I actually met MORE cool people by playing games in tournaments than i ever would have met by doing "cool" things, whatever they would be. And its nice having a lot of friends that share similar interests. And you act like just because we play videogames seriously, that we're gonna fail at school because we're all fat lazy slobs that don't do anything except sit there and play games all day. Definetly not true.
And you act like just because someone is good at games, that they spend 40+ hours per week on the game. I doubt that Daigo or Justin Wong spends 40+ hours per week playing a game. And even if they did, they probably do it hanging out with friends, and as far i remember, hanging out with friends is not "sad".
So maybe before you go judging what others do, you should try to sound less ignorant plz. Thinking that just because someone plays games that they're sad is honestly a really pathetic thought process. And there's a difference in "seeing the scene differently" than not knowing about the scene at all. I honestly just think you overestimate how much time people spend on the game. And i don't think you realize that you can't get good at a game by being alone and not playing against anybody.
And same with people who comment about cosplayers. So they're different, big deal. Those cosplayers in the first post did suck, but cosplaying in general is just their hobby and what they do for fun, so calling them losers makes you just as bad as ichijo.

I like the GG female Japanese cosplayers :D .
On a side note I once I start working out again (one of these days I swear) I would like to cosplay as Yashiro or Gattsu. But I would have to hear the hard-core cosplayers and fighting game players bitch about the tatto on my chest and how "Yashiro doesn't have a tattoo on his chest" ..oh well...one of these days...

When will people disregard the shallowness of their minds and view others for the beauty within their hearts...even if their cover that beauty up with poorly made outfits. Although I gotta admit, I've seen some HOT cosplayers (female course), most of them being asian (and I've seen alot of asian girls cosplaying guys and they are so FINE).
Although I've seen my fairshare of non-asian chicks that do great jobs too, and even chicks (asian and non-asian) that got some junk in the trunk or are a lil chubby that are pretty damn good looking in their own right. But, good looking chubby girls are hard to come by when it comes to cosplay...
But ya know, whether its cosplaying or going to tournments, conventions, whatever, people have FUN doing it, let'em enjoy themselves, they dont care what you think :)
here's the pic of me as Terry.
