808: Hawaiian Brian Billiards

I recently have been left in charge of doing some promotions and planning for tournaments at the zones and it led to think about doing some tournaments for the srk crew here. Now I have a few questions and this is for everyone Blunt,808, UH, Tilt , who ever, I just want honest questions and opinions.

The current idea is for a tournament during the last week of October or 1st week of November. Rough estimate of prize $ is around $200 for game 1 ( to be determined ) and about $150 for (game 2) with other prizes to be determined.

We will not be using the 70/20/10 percent split that some of you are used to in prior tournaments. This concept is similar to the one I used at the Super Connected tournaments I ran a while back. Where the prize $ is preset.

What I want to do is make the entry fee the same as what I did in the past at SC. The entry fee will be $10 but will allow you entry into both games on that day. So basically it be like paying $5 for each game.

Now here comes the question.

1. Do you still want to play in tournaments?
2. Seeing console is the only route of doing this would you be ok with a console tournament?
3. If you had to pick.... would you rather have Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or Capcom vs. Snk 2?
4. Your view on having a Third Strike tournament? Yes? No? I hate 3s? I love 3s?

If we do this we will not be asking the players to bring any dreamcast units or games, everything will be provided here at the zones, but we will ask that you bring your own controller, or mas stick that you feel comfortable with.

My idea right now is to make the tournament as follows

GAME:1
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike (Play station 2 USA)

Game:2
Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Capcom vs. Snk 2 (Dreamcast)

I Choose Street Fighter 3 third strike as a lock because its a new release on play station 2 and attaining multiple legit ( non burnt ) copies of the game for use at the Zones will not be a problem. Also Sf3 right now seems to be really popular at Brian’s.

The reason I didn’t out right pick CVS2 or MVC2 is because they are a lot of new CVS2 players I see now at Brian’s playing and I also see some new MVC2 players as well, I will eventually want to run both games if the first tournament is a success but I want to test the waters first and see how the first one goes.

The current room that we have to use already comes with 5, 48inch plasma screen TVs all equipped with Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube,. There is also 2 big 52 inch TVs in the front.

Most of the blunt crew has already been to zones but for those of you who don't know what or where it is, let me give you some information. Zones is a internet gaming center in Waimalu Shopping Center. A lot of the blunt players along with myself frequent the place.

If you got more questions or have suggestions or ideas fire away, like I said this is open to anyone, and I seeking feedback. The point of this is to keep the scene alive, but if folks feel they don't want to play in any tournaments I understand.

Here are my opinions:

1. I'm down for any fighting game tourney.
2. Consoles are fine.
3. Personally I'd pick CVS2. But, I think the audience would prefer Marvel.
4. 3rd Strike tournaments would be awesome. I've always been a 3s fan.

Thanks for the support so far, and hope to see more ideas and suggestions; I am all ears for suggestions and thoughts on things. The more detailed the better.

3rd Strike:
Right now 3s is going to be a lock, I know this might not make everyone happy, but I am a fair person and I go with what I see. Right now 3s seems to be pretty popular at Brians and a lot of folks that do play it don't play anything else. So it would add to the total crowd and pool of players if they actually did show up and enter. Keyword = If they actually do show up.

CVS2:
I see a few new folks at Brian’s playing, I don't know if they read srk but I know of them has Spiky hair and plays balrog, another wears glasses, kind of short and baldish, and plays GGXX a lot but I see him playing CVS2 also rather frequent using K cammy,Blanka,sagat.

MVC2:

I would love to do seeing its always intense and a fast moving game. I got nothing but love for MVC2 and some of the best tournament moments in Hawaii came from MVC2. My only concern with doing MVC2 is would people like Rob, Lawrence and Tru and Johnny come down for MVC2 tournament. I got nothing against them personally and would appreciate if they came down and entered. But keyword is would they be willing to. If someone can find out for me, MVC2 would be more in my favor of the game to do.

llll: Good point about the time and date, I was thinking of picking a Saturday, mostly because a lot of folks work Friday and fighting end of the day work traffic can be a hassle especially for town people going to Aiea side. I was thinking Saturday.

Erik build: If you had to pick either MVC2 or CVS2 what would you rather have?

Leviathan IIDX: I don't really know the majority of 3s players but would people like Leighton, KingofGlory, and some of the others enter? Also do they have means of playing 3s on a playstation 2? They own sticks or have friends they can borrow from? This is my only major concerns with 3s. I’m kind of in the dark so any concrete information would go a long way. In planning for things. My concern is if people like Leighton don’t own a PS2 stick they won't enter. I may be wrong but fill me in or if anyone knows them have them post and let me know.

Ducky: Well Dreamcast format would be used for CVS2 or MVC2, there basically almost arcade perfect. The changes are not major enough to affect priority or major tactics and teams involving those games. As for PS2 and 3rd strike I have spent hours reading various threads and it’s pretty close to arcade perfect. The changes are minor compared to Dreamcast 3rd Strike. If you would like more details I could try and link you to a few threads to help you get a better idea.

...if possible psx, try arranging some session on days which do not clash with the uh meetings. it could offer a more comfortable atmosphere which could lead to a better outcome due to word-of-mouth, etc. accumilating more customers = (in most cases) more profits.

After talking to a bunch of the guys and doing some serious thinking , I notice a lot of folks are wanting MVC2 and CVS2, 3s strike I know gets played at Brian’s but in the past every single 3s tournament had really low turn outs.

It seems the MVC2 and CVS2 players have always been willing to show there interest in playing either game and indicated in the past that they do show up when they want a tournament. Just scrolling up reading the post the MVC2/ CVS2 players were the first to post, yet only 2 3s players even said anything. The way I look at it seems like 3s just isn’t as popular to where folks are that hungry for a tournament. I am not hating on it but it’s the way it appears.

So that leads with another question…

Wow I think that’s kind of a lame ass comment to make for a few reasons.

1. Any tournament I done in the past always got done. In fact I still got the brackets and I can scan them in case you forgot. O wait you did enter so I don’t see what the purpose of your comment was. The tournaments in fact had a 33 man turn out for the first one and 28 for the 2nd one. The prizes where better in total then any tournament prior to them. Ask HawaiianRyan he got a easy $100 in MVC2, Team Blunt scored $50 in a team MVC2 event, Ernest $100 in CVS2, even myself in ST.

2. The last 3rd strike tournament held at the UH MANOA fight club which was advertised early I might add by Theo , I attended. I didn’t see you there? I give Theo props he showed he loves 3s and wants to have tournaments he tried, why didn’t you support it? Heck I have a full time job and I still found time from work to show up and enter and 3s isn’t even a game I care about. Yet you no showed, and you have the nerve to ask if this 3s tournament is going to happen???????? :lame:

Even I entered the 3s tournament held at UH manoa fight club. Heck I don’t even play 3s but I showed up to support. I didn’t wait at home asking if folks where going to show, I just showed up cause I wanted to support the tournament scene. Its funny I don't even play much 3rd strike and was labeled once as anti 3s. Yet I show up for basically all the 3s tournaments in the past and enter them. Im done with playing in tournaments but I still plan to chip in $10 and pay for someones entry fee at this tournament like I have done in the past for other tournaments held at Brian's.

Folks if you love the scene and tournamnets support it by entering. Voice your opinion. It don't do any good waiting to see who shows up and entering only if certain people go. Screw it just go cause you want to.

On a sidenote, I'd be willing to run some small round-robin tournaments on Friday or Saturday at Brians (once they fix the joysticks) for whoever is interested. Just a thought...

Good and valid point.I will be looking into alternatives for sticks in case they can't find somoene to borrow from. I am not making any promises but I will be definatley pitching some ideas out and see what can be done.

Well the last ones I remmeber was the one when Watts came down to enter. A few 3s players that used to complain about not having comp didn't even enter that tournament. I entered and didn't care I felt it ain't every day a player of that level comes to Hawaii and I wanted to take full advantage. Others didnt even enter and just watched. Then again I think there was another tournamnet for 3rd strike after that when I moved to California in Hawaii. I wasn't here to see it but is this the one where Dom won and ernest came in 2nd or something?

Tourneys are always a good thing, if this happens I will come down if I can make it out of work to see the turn out and how it flows. As for sticks if anyone don't know the secret to getting anything fixed at Brians is telling the front desk. They give you a white book to write in what is wrong and the tech comes in ussually every morning or so and checks the book. They won't know if anything is broken unless someone reports it.



Any more suggestions, ideas, etc I am all ears and reading this frequently. Fire away.

You're probably right, a lot of the people entered because it was free.

But I'm curious to see the attendance this time around because the game seems really hot at Brians nowdays.

As far as the sticks are concerned, I reported to Brian (the tech) last week. He said he was going to fix it. He's usually reliable so I think it'll be fixed soon. If he doesn't remember, I'll notify the front desk.

I also talked to Arlieth and 5star about 3s tournaments. They gave me the run down on how to run a casual "1-2 dollar, winner takes all" 3s tounament very effectively and quickly. I know their style works because I entered one of them when I was in Cali this past April. Having weekly tournaments would be good for the scene.

Damn haven't posted for months. Yeah my first vote will definitely be for 3S. I'm dying for a tourney for this. I will guarantee to let Evil and Syxx know about the upcoming tournies and try to see if they can get on to SRK and have them vote. I know for sure Evil would be down for 3S and Syxx for CvS2.

As for my second vote, it will have to go to CvS2 based on the fact that I'm better at CvS2 than MvC2. Even though my CvS2 skills are WAY BELOW many of the hardcore CvS2 players, I'm still down to enter a CvS2 tourney.

Reading your above post you tend to always use broken English in a lot of things you write. Also it’s "your" not "ur". You should check your own spelling before you complain about mines. I only brought this up seeing you want to make an issue about my typing. I am sorry you had to read this but I am just standing up for myself. In no way did I attack KZero in my first post toward him I said everything in a clean manner. I didn’t’ use any name calling. Yet he took it upon himself to attempt to flame me, misquote me and harass me instead of reading what I wrote carefully and discussing it.

I still really look forward to doing some tournaments for all you folks and getting the scene revived and going again. K-Zero15’s comments will not affect my views on doing a tournament and I still really am down in anyway to get something done for the players. If you guys got any questions or comments and feedbacks on the tournaments, please by all means let me know. I really want to tweak things and I am sure a lot of you out there got some good ideas that I am dieing to hear them.

Everyone else: As for my tourney long ago. LOL. The goal of the tourney was to have the best people {who were here and available to play} to come down and play.

We had a decent turnout and for the most part. In the end, I had allowed Kent to run the tourney giving up my responibilties, to allow myself to fill a 20th slot, assuring that everyone had a first round opponent. But anyways. CRO won that day, Ernest took 2nd.

I really enjoy playing video games, for the competition and strategy that it involves. Although in the past I have made many a derogatory remark about all kinds of stuff.
For that tourney I wanted to thank my fellow players, many who have been gracious enough to let me play for free at their homes, given me rides to be able to play the best here, informed me of new things to try and look out for, and etc. etc.

I totally understand how you feel about traffic. I drive to pearl city every day almost for the last few months and its killer some times and other times its laid back. Hence why I choose to do it on a saturday instead of Friday. A lot less traffic for us town folk to deal with.

It will probably be on the dreamcast seeing more people have dreamcast format mas sticks then playstation 2. I could loan you my PS2- DC adaptor and you can do a dry run and see how it feels on your x-arcade.

Will have firm details sunday night or monday. We tested out a few setup ideas the other night. To see if it would lag running on a high definition television. MVC2 ran smooth. So I just need to test it on a flat wide screen LCD tommorow and if it runs smooth Ill have a better idea on a format.

We get a group of players. Say we have 10.... for example

We all play a certain amount of time... lets say 4 hours.

At the end of the 4 hours the player with the biggest win streak or most wins total wins. Depends on how people like to do it.

Everyone rotates like they normally would in casual play in line. But now there is a element of strat when 2 good players are next to each other in line, both of there win streaks might be cut short seeing they will kill each other off left and right. Which leaves everyone else picking up the left overs.

T5 is ok... the graphics have a darker feel and it doesn't look as clean as T4, but that's a good thing. They nerfed the fuck outta Jin, which is why I don't really want to play it now, since I have to relearn him. I know that Jin plays a lot different than his T3, TTT, and T4 incarnations. He can still do the 2, 1, parry, but laser scraper got killed. Juggles for Jin are more like T4 than TTT/T3, from what I've played so far. The computer didn't do too many juggles on me, so I don't know how everyone else plays. Haven't had a problem with corners or walls though.

PSX - I would ask BossDawg about T5, since he is big on Tekken.

Well if other players step in I guess personally I would let it go. Don't really bother me. I should ask the guys that enter the sf3 tournaments they do at Brian's if anything like that ever happened to them with an outsider wanting to play. I guess the whole topic could be open to discussion.

True slowing down the game is a strat but also playing faster is another one. Playing long drawn out games starting at win 1 can get tiresome lol. Thats why I don't use Vega,Bison,Sagat anymore ... gets borring.

Personally I dont believe in order switching. Its not allowed in tournament play at EVO for CVS2 yet some folks here locally live by it even in casual play when they challenge me. Honestly it only hurts your game and it dont teach you guys the ins and outs to the match ups.

But as for king of the hill personally i think player A thats defending his win streak can order switch etc,etc, new player can pick any team he wants. I personally think both players shouldnt order switch that way we can see the best overall player at defending the machine.

I am open to what ever everyone is cool with.

Either way Shin you know what I mean lol. But yea i am flexiable either way.

Sticks are 360's with convex buttons. Cabinet isn't like the Marvel kind, more like Killer Instinct. Just figured some of the old-school people might be interested.

Last I checked (10 min. ago), CvS2 second player side FP is whack. Just starts going off on its own.

Marvel is getting a little broken again. Dashing on left hand side is a little iffy. Hope they fix all that soon.

I experienced the random FP of doom last night. Though I did get a 24 game win streak with the broken side some how last night. I let the front desk know before I left about it so it should be fixed. I just learned to slap the board any time it starts to go off on its own.

ST cabinet is nice, its a converted soul edge cabinet. Really nice screen. Only 2 small problems. There using high 360s. Also the stick distance from the buttons is a bit further then the standard distance. It threw my timing off and it just felt wierd.

For those that went to B5 and played at folsom and SVGL its those type of sticks. Nice cabinet though.

I ordered the sf2 anniversary stick recently, long story short, it seems like a reliable stick, next time i meet up with some of the guys ill bring it down and see what some of the folk’s think of it. If everyone is cool with it, I ll get 2 for the zones tourney to cover those that don’t own a stick.

We just finished doing the big halo 2 tourneys where Zones gave away around $500 in cash. We got a smash brothers tournament coming up next I think.

The only thing holding me back left is getting a legit copy of MVC2 and CVS2. I own both import version but if anyone sees any used at local stores let me know. I need about 1 more of each.

Actually that is not the stick. Its a mock done on computer.

Here is what the real SF2AE stick looks like.

Notice it uses a different type stick then the lik sang mock picture and it uses Convex buttons.

Basiclly its arcade quality stick and buttons for xbox and ps2 together.

The only drawback is you can only purchase this stick at EBGAMES online. The link sang SF2 AE version will use a differnt ball shape style stick.

Yup thats the card think i was talking about. Its also allows you to unlock new outfits etc for your charecter.

Cards should work from any machines location. Ill find out when I insert my FF and Tilt cards.

That's some funny shit. I just didn't like their MVC2/CVS2 cabinets. The button/joystick setup was all well uhh...tilted. :confused:

Back then I used to go there a lot for XSF and MSH (the setup was all normal and stuff back then). Got kicked out there once because one of the workers thought me and my friends vandalized MSH. Complained to the powers that be at Pearlridge and three weeks later, that certain Tilt worker was gone.

Here is a story about the life of a noob.


Yay, yay, today I am going to Hawaiian Brians Billiards. I go to the change machine quite often, since I go there knowing that the superior players will make it more than reasonable for me to take advantage of the token bonus I receive when changing larger bills.

So I stand in line, to play my favorite game, one which I am lacking playing time, and experience in but have a good time playing regardless of winning or losing. Yes, yes, I am about to play, I am ready to go. But I hear some "Scrub" { I guess that what some of the players call these type of people since I lack in the lingo of the arcade} saying "Damn, I lost cause the short didn't come out" Obviously, this person must be LACKING some real skills cause he puts his reliance on one button above the other five. AND these players would allow me to play on this SO CALLED DEFECTIVE SIDE nevertheless they also don't expect me to do well anyway since I am a "NEWBIE".

Anyway, I somehow manage to get one lucky win, which even to me is a huge surprise cause my noob skills don't usually get me far, well except for the walk to the change machine. But the surrounding players who have showered me with advice on how to play which I honestly nod my head to, but have no idea what they are talking about, give me these "mad props" for playing a nice game. I don't know what is nice about what I did, since I am a noob, and not on the same level to comprehend what these experts are talking about.

That one lucky win, means the world to me, as for once in my life, I am the one who defends the chair {that is what I call it, when there are no chairs for others with the exception of the players.} Yet there are disputes as to my win, with complaints about things I don't have knowledge of, and some other derogatory terms about my NOOb playing style. I believe I heard "fucking lucky". I guess it is Fucking lucky to lose to a noob since the one who made the comment has WASTED his time JUST to lose to me. I mean if you want to be the BIg Fish, and come out consistently playing like the GOldfish in some old man's tank, then it might signal that it's time to go find a new hobby. Cause how is a newbie supposed to do okay against the exeprts time and time again. I wanted to thank the other player, since I believe that he is the most dominant player in the arcade, for giving me the time to play him, but if I get no handshake when I extend my hand, in defeat or victory, then I feel somewhat disrespected for my efforts.

To make a long story short, I lost a few games to the experts as expected and was able to get on the GOOD SIDE, which I had earlier managed to get one LUCKY win against, but enough about that. So I get a good groove on, and feel somewhat good about being able to learn someday be a part of these group of expert players. And I score a few victories agaisnt my "heroes" who play. I hope that if I can consistently do these lucky streaks that I can find me a player who can advise me from scratch. I assume that no one wants me to learn, since I am so far behind, and the task would be time consuming as well as expensive.

One of the experts tells me, that I am not too far behind, and all I lack is the ability to do and see all these fancy attacks/counterattacks, and being successful with BULLSHIT LUCKY attacks is not as satsifying.


TO make this long story short, IF YOU READ THIS, then it shoulda taken you less time to read then to download and watch some video that wouldn't help your gameplay cause I see the same shit every single fucking week, and I get LUCKY WINS with the same fucking shit too. If I can do well and feel alright with playing with what I already feel comfortable, and have no desire to be the best, then why waste the time? LOL....who's the noob now?

WEll, after a couple of games at Chinese Checkers, there was no pleasure in being able to breakdown a game like chinese checkers, it is more simpler to than the video games that come out these days, and with much less violence and sex. I mean sex sells, and there is nothing sexy about Chinese Checkers.

So, I make a return to my local arcade, and see some of the faces I seen the last time. To my amazement, a few people recognized me, maybe cause I was the guy who always lost bad and won with some "fucking random skills".

Today the line seems long, and challenger after challenger falls to the "master". It is my assumption that this "master" is very respected, since he is allowed to replay an opponent who has dethroned him.

I stand there humbled that the arcade hero, had fallen, something that I rarely see. I see his fans urge him on to play again. Although the masses demand that he play again, sadly there is one amongst the crowd that despicably calls him a "sore loser". Even the "master" can't make everyone happy all the time.

And this is it, I finally get to play against "the one", as the crowd calls him, that defeated the arcade master. But I too, am denied a chance to play, by the onslaught of fan support for a rematch. So, I oblige and go to the mini snack bar to grab me some grub, so I can enjoy watching gameplay of this high calibur. Everyone that a good game, always leads to a great series between players.

Since I am some inexperience noob as everyone calls me, I am tempted to say due to lack of knowledge that I am just "seeing" the same combos on the screen, that I saw last time.

I'm pretty sure, that the "master" and his opponent are playing a pretty SERIOUS game, since they are ALWAYS GOING FOR THE EXACT SAME COMBO{which people tell me does the most damage} and quickly going for the kill. I would't know though, since the way I choose to play is noob, and my goal is to slowly take my opponents apart hit by hit, so you can see yourself losing and killing one with a super to exact a SUPER FINISH.

While the combos I do are the LESS DAMAGING combos I DO ON PURPOSE since I am the type to try and explore the game for myself and see what fits my style best. PERHAPS THAT IS WHY I AM CALLED THE "RANDOM NOOB".

Could it be possible, that if I did the most damage combos NEARLY EVERY SINGLE TIME I HAD THE CHANCE TO, maybe just maybe that I too can achieve the status of being able to play with crowd support so high that I can play over and over to my desires after BULLSHIT LOSSES.

I once heard from this "GRAND MASTER" {to my astonishment}who even has students and fellow master players who regularly ask him for advice. That the "master" I speak so highly of, is a fraud.

Everything that I had once believed about the "master" had become shown in a negative light. How could it be, that the "Grand Master" was tricked into a wager by the "master" and after defeating the "master", he had refused to pay and demanded "double or nothing". I was so shocked at this SHAMELESS ATTEMPT to belittle the "master" that I had with no regards to my own {EDIT} I MEAN BANK ACCOUNT {LOL} called the Grand Master out for money.

The Grand Master whooped my ass, as if I were someone who came to steal his TiVo Entertainment System. I offered to keep my word and offered to pay for my overzealous attempt to mock him. He didn't allow me to pay him, rather settling if I were to watch him play and learn. He did say one thing, "The one you call master will not be one to keep his word in front of his peers, that alone shows alot about his character."

one thing you should know about james wang is that he tells more

For players like myself, I have to use EVERY SINGLE MIND GAME IN THE BOOK, to try and get in your head to even stay competitive with you guys whenever I am playing in money matches/tourneys/tourney practice.

Yeah I do get my money's worth just by getting out of the house and the good cheap stress relief of a $.25 game of 3S or CVS2. Although I do get destroyed a lot of times in 3S, I feel that is the only way to get better in the darn game because we all know one can't get better and improve on offensive and defensive tactics by beating on computer dummy in training mode. :wasted:
