View Full Version : The definitive guide to ZSNES online

To play online zsnes, follow these directions. All you really need is zsnes and an IM program that the other player has as well, but zbattle automates this process. First thing you do is open ZSNES. DO NOT load a rom. That comes after you are connected together. Open ZSNES and go to NETPLAY and select INTERNET (Heres a pic) (http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v102/fatherbrain/netplaypic1.gif)
After you do that, you will see this screen. (another pic) (http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v102/fatherbrain/netplaypic2.gif)
Decide over the IM program which of you will be server and which of you will be the client. Whoever is the server should then give the client their IP adress. It is located at the bottom of the netplay menu. The client then types the host IP address in the long blank spot. (another pic) (http://img34.photobucket.com/albums/v102/fatherbrain/netplaypic3.gif)
After the client puts the host IP address in, the host then presses the START AS SERVER button. After that is done, the client then should press the CONNECT TO SERVER button. The client's IP address is not required. After connection is made, which can take up to 3 minutes, then you will see a chat screen. All you have to do is go to game and load rom. It does not matter wether the host or client loads the game. The only requirement is that the roms must be unzipped and have the same name. While playing, press T to chat with each other.
Theres another thing you must know about ZSNES. If you have a firewall, you need to either disable it or let port 7845 be exempt from the firewall. If you are using Windows XP, you must disable the built in firewall that it has. Simply go to your control panel, select windows firewall, and disable it.
Now, to make connecting even easier, download the zbattle program at www.zbattle.net . Install it, and it's dead easy to use.
IMPORTANT... If you are on a router, then you will not be able to netplay until you configure your router properly! DarkAkuma (the creator of Z-net) has made an excellent router help page to assist you in doing that. (Find it here) (http://s92592113.onlinehome.us/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=53&sid=fb352e208bd994527f4c0e5183271eb0)
www.zsnes.com has ZSNES. Make sure you get both 1.36 and 1.40 as some games, such as Mortal kombat, and others, work best on 1.36.
And finally, go to www.zbattle.net for zbattle. Easy to set up, but it only works with UDP.
There you have it. If you have any questions, ask and I'll see what I can do. I am willing to play tech support if I have to. But please refrain from asking for roms, as I would like to keep this thread open as long as possible. And let me know if this little tutorial helps any, or if there is anything I need to clarify.
Thank you for reading this.
*EDIT* Please note, if you STILL cannot connect, UNCHECK the allow UDP box in your netplay menu, and have the other person do the same. It should work then, but using TCP/IP instead of UDP can be more laggy. Only do this as a last resort. And do NOT do this if you are 56k. It will lag horribly then for sure.

Can someone explain the difference between Zbattle and Znet? I had Znet at one point, but I'm hearing things about Zbattle, and I don't know which one I should get. What are the majority of you people using?

The windows firewall is easily controlled via right clicking the "connected" icon in your system tray. Right click, choose change windows firewall settings.
Pre service pack 2, i believe you had to go into the properties of the connection you wished to dial, and click on the advanced tab.
Correct me if i am wrong of course.

When you go to netplay and select internet on zsnes, it is at the bottom of the window where you put in the host ip or start as host.

Anyways, if you're on a router, and use LinkSys, use the LAST 3 LETTERS of your IP.

2 questions. I'm very new to online play, yet I would really like to get into it.
First of all, when I open up zsnes for the first time, I get a black screen where Zsnes should be, however all of a sudden my computer freezes. I look at the zsnes faq, and they say to get the latest direct X. However after downloading the first direct X, right after I click open, an error box opens saying:
"An internal error occured.
Please refer to directx.log in your Windows folder to determine the problem"
when I check out my "directx.log" it's a note pad document with a bunch of gibberish things I can't understand....Can someone help me out with installing Driect X please!?
Secondarily, I'm confused about how to play Mame games online, and what Kailerra is. Can some explain how I can play Mame games online, and explain exactly what Kailerra is for me?
Thanks.

How do you view the recorded stuff from Zbattle? I can't remember :( I recorded some matches, but I can't remember how to play them. The file is named zmv or something like that. I know there is some "renaming" involved, but I can't remember. Any one? Help!!!
Thanks in advance.

fatherbrain:
my IP doesn't show at the bottom of the netplay screen.
it says 192.168.1.2 instead, which is NOT my IP.
ok, i got my real ip through the windows network status screen.
but it won't let me connect through UDP. it lags horribly on TCP/ IP. is there any way to force UDP usage?

if you're on a router, you'll need to open up the correct ports. Also, firewalls cause problems as well.
*shit. fb again. I've REALLY got to convince semi to log out on occasion...*

Um I tried changing the display to 16-bit and upgraded to DX9.0 and ZSW 1.36 is still nothing more than a black square when I run it. ZSW 1.4 and higher runs fine for some reason, though. A little help?

Just to let you know:
There's a more stable for online play version of ZSnes 1.42, it's called 1.42n, ad it can be found here:
http://nsrt.edgeemu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=448
It deals with most of the desyncronization and freezing issues found in oline play in v1.42, and it has helped me to play SFA2 without problems at all.
Dracula_X
06-07-2006, 05:03 PM
That works for Alpha 2 but most other games will still desync after some time.
Zsnes 1.36 is still more stable for online play.

"And finally, go to www.zbattle.net for zbattle. Easy to set up, but it only works with UDP."
Actually zbattle also works on tcp, just not nearly as well. It has been my experience that the gameplay lags way more on tcp than on upd.

props to FB for this guide and GR (good round, since we didn't play more lol)
lag is annoying, plus I don't really understand the router deal, and I play at work :D so I can't just tell my boss "hey, are we on a router? I need to configure it, I can't play well online" XD

But I'm kinda getting in to Tetris Attack and I wanna go online. If anyone plays Tetris Attack alot online, and won't mind helping me get set up properly, PM me so we can get some games in. Yeah, Zbattle never allows me to transfer/download files from some one. It always just stays stuck on the file transfer screen :(

I think there was an option to store the rom as its full file format cause I think by default it stores it as a temp memory file... I can't remember as I stopped using zbattle. I stick to kaillera nowf or snes
