Calgary Tourney December 18th [Archive]

Tourney date: December 18th 2004
Location: University of Calgary Campus Cove. Inside MacEwan Student Hall. (2500 University Drive NW)
Sign up begins at 11am, and tourney starts at latest 12:30.

Games include: cvs2, mvc2, sf3s. GGXX only upon request with enough interest.

This will be an exciting tourney, especially now we have top players coming from Edmonton, possibly B.C, and Calgary has new blood plus old players improved dramatically in cvs2.

Note: If housing is necessary, please post here and we will do our best to help.

Entry fee options suggested by the arcade owner as following:

Choice#1: Usual $10 per game, or $24 for all 3 games. Free play and tournament mode. Owner takes very little from pot, with the rest goes to prizes. (70%-1st, 20%-2nd, 10%-3rd)

choice#2: Lower entry fee, $5 per game, or $12 for all 3 games. Owner double the pot. Free hot dog and surplee for entering. Use pay per play format with tournament mode.

Please let me know what you guys think of the choices.

I think Choice 1 would be better.. I mean, who needs hot dogs over free play?!.. I dont really care too much about the size of the pot, just as long as its there for motivation.. doubling the pot wouldnt do much for me comming, I'd still wanna come just as much.. its the experience im in for! =P

Hopefully BC will wanna go.. if so, awesome!

I hope to see some of you guys at our BC tourny on November. 27th..

Well, We have basically two choices for the tourney day.. before or after the new year. Since it is best to have a tourney on a Saturday, our choices are limited to either Dec 11, 18, 25 or Jan 1st and later. For sure, we can do another one after this one and give you more time to prepare for your ass kicking in cvs2 if you haven't gotten enough yet, J/K :badboy:

Byron, are you coming to the cove any time Friday? And what's with the Chun Li? are you talking about cvs2 chun li or 3rd strike?

BTW Troung, you don't want to earn your confidence from Ray any more, he has gotten way better than he used to be. He still gets his butt kicked every now and then, but don't underestimate him because he is a fast learner.

For those of you who are planning to come to the UofC cove on this coming Saturday(Nov6), please let me know in advance, because I may be able to talk to the owner about possibly lower the entry if there is lots of interest.

As well, street fighter alpha 3 is supposed to be back in the cove and will also be put in free play mode on Saturday during the all you can play period (between 5pm to 1 am)

If you guys want weekly tournaments, here are what we need:

1. more time, which means starts earlier.
2. more people, less than 16 people per game is just kind of :lame:

mvc2 is broken because - glitches, and you CANNOT stop the rushdown, there is no such thing as turtling, only running away, but even that can be stopped

cvs2 is broken because - rc's, turtling

3s is broken because - if u can parry a whole ken super, it's broken. turtling always works in that game as well

Your zangief was so funny, even though he died miserable to Spiral/Sentinel!(I know, I was being a jackass to you). I gave Nelson a thirty minute master mvc2 lesson the day before, and he did put up quite a fight for that little bit of training .

That Remy fireballs challenge was funny as hell as well, watching you eating those fireballs just reminds me of those donuts you were eating that time.

We had people in all 5 games making 10 wins in a row and received their entry fee rebate.

mvc2- Ray (of course, since I didn't play to make sure he wins!) :karate:

Guilty Gear XX- Adam (didn't watch any of those matches, but I think he got like 20+ wins)

Those were fun games last night. Juggernaut Tron doom too good. Benimaru/Kim/Nakoruru/Yun/Honda/Chang/Joe too good. Unfortunately, I came AFTER the 10 wins were taken for every single game so I didn't have a chance to get my money back in CvS2. I basically had to fool around and play at least 10 games in order to get my money's worth. Where was the other Byron? I heard he left early... I wanted to play him... maybe next time. Let's just hope poker doesn't last as long next week. :tup:

Saturday night was really fun. I'm outta practice but had some really good matches. Had losing records against Ian and Trung but overall did pretty well.

I wanna thank Ian for reviving the Calgary scene. It's amazing to walk into that arcade and see so many good players sticking around for such a long time.

Hey, it is good to have all you guys coming out and play together (a total of 27 people show up). Also, it's good to lose to Ian but not to Truong, J/K :karate:
I can tell you as a matter of fact that ever since we are doing this Saturday thing, everybody has improved his game dramatically. You never know what will happen next, maybe even Garrett will finally master his A-groove vega and bison. :wow:

I am actually thinking about doing a mini tourney for one game every week in the Saturday evening thing, and see how that goes. What do you guys think of that? Probably for this coming week will be cvs2. :tup:

I like the poster you have on the MVC2 machine about fight night. Maybe you should add the fact the best people will be there so if anyone wants to learn they they show up.

Is there no way for them to change the 3S cabinet? I'm fine with them and all b/c I'm used to it but they aren't the best plus, it's pretty crowd there. Minor complaint though.

I think you should make a CvS2 and Neowave tourney.

i'm fine with the cabinet. but that's cuz i'm used to it. however........touching another guy's hand while doing tackles isn't a great experience. i'd love to see 3s back on a big machine. since a new owner and management is in town, maybe that's possible?!?

weekly tourney sounds great. cvs2/neowave can go first...3s/mvc2 second...if there's enough ppl, ggxx could go too..but i dunno how many actually would play ggxx...that game is too random.

As far as the third strike machine goes, you guys should let the owner know how you feel about the cabinet yourself. He is a great guy and he will appreciate your comment. The more people mentioning it to him, the higher the chance he is likely going to consider. (simple logic) :tup: In the mean time, the owner has changed the setting back to 2 credits/loonie.

As far as the tournament is concerned, we will ensure that third strike will be on a big screen. Especially when we don't encourage homosexuality, so we want to make sure guys don't touch each other's hand consistently while having a tournament match. :confused:

Also, please tell me why you guys want to do two games tournament on one Saturday. The reason I suggest one game is that the other four games(alpha 3 be coming to make it five) will be available for those who are waiting for their turn in the tournament. If you guys have good reasons, then we sure can go for it.

Yeah. 3rd strike on big cabinet would be good. I highly doubt there's any virtua Fighter/tekken scene in Calgary. Also, maybe switch out the joystick in CvS2 1st player left side. It's starting to show it's age and it's a lot looser than the 2nd player side.

So everyone agreed with the mini-tourney on each Saturday, right? You are automatically enter once you pay the entry fee for the free fighting game night, so only you choose to get involved or not.

The prizes will be like rebate of entry fee with next saturday visit be free, and possibly movie passes(need to be confirmed first). Also, if the same person wins those mini-tourneys a couple times, then of course they have the bragging right of being the best in Calgary for that game. :wow:

Again, this week is for cvs2, follow by mvc2,3s, neowave, GGXX, alpha 3(to make sure it gets there, first)

Owner also mentioned about changing the joystick board of third strike to a wider one to keep distance between players and keep it at 2 credits/loonie.

I honestly have never played GGX2 outside of my friends, but am looking to play more people; and didn't even know a ggx2 scene existed in this cultrally lacking city Is there a diverse range of competition? or will this be $10 of a gauranteed loss.

Okay, since Saturday night will always start at 5pm to 1am(closing) and about 25 people surrounding 5 fighting games, if you can't even get 10 games in during that time, there are only two possiblities:

1. You are too damn good, that you stick to your machine for a whole 8 hours without losing a match. OR

2. You show up really really late, right before everyone has to leave.

In the worse case, if there are just WAY TOO MANY people playing GGXX, there is still a Guilty Gear isuka machine for you in free play mode all night. Does that sound good to you? :wow:

Then, there is an instant entry fee rebate for the FIRST PERSON in each game whom achieve 10 wins in a row. So, everybody wins and nobody loses for coming.

I play A3. Not that good anymore, but I would love a challenge.

As for the tourney, 2 games/tourney b/c then there would be at least 2-3 tournies for each game before the BIG one.

For the tourney Ian, I think you should go with 2 characters Ratio 2 each. Do a Round Robin, with the top 2 do a best out of 5 or 7. This way everyone gets to play no more waiting for games to finish, you know how long that (CvS2 round) takes. The games go by faster b/c it's R2. It's also alot easier to keep track of then a normal bracket battle but that's just me.

Also about the 3S cab, I'm never @ the U anymore so I can't really talk to the owner. I know he's a nice guy and all but I'm just never there.

Anyways, hopefully more 3S people come this Sat. I need more perfects :karate:

From the looks of things to come, this coming tourney should have a huge turnout. However, it also depends on which game you are most interested as well. This will be the one of the biggest, if not the biggest tourney ever run in Calgary. Do you best to come and have some fun with us, we will give you a challenge. Housing should not be much trouble, we'll update you on that.

How about we do this:

1. A normal tournament for one game
2. Tag matches and challenges with another game

Ex.
1. cvs2 tourney this week (normal or round robin, depends on #)

We should allow three accidental blocks in the entire match. Intentional blocking means you lose... Ex. when you get up from a knock down, and you block = very intentional.

I am thinking that with this coming mini cvs2 tourney, we can do either an 8 people tourney, or if there are more than 8 people(which probably will be) then we can do a 2 on 2 tourney, kinda like the Japanese SBO style. In which both memebers of one team play seperately, and must eliminate both members of the opposing team to advance.

In such case, we don't have to worry about the time factor.

If it is a 8 people tourney, 4 hours (5 at most) should be enough to finish a 2 out of 3, double elimination one.

If it is a 2 on 2 team tourney, then we will make it best of 1 match, eliminate both members and we can even make it double elimination if we want to.

How does that sound?

The 1st player side Joystick has been changed to a brand new one for cvs2, so you guys won't have to worry about it any more. :karate:

We will find out about the prizes for the cvs2 mini tourney on Saturday, the owner said he will take care of that part.

Also, Alpha 3 should be available by this Saturday, they said they will work on it on Friday.

This mini cvs2 tourney(this Saturday nov 13th) will most likely be a 2 on 2 Japanese SBO style(2 teammates use separate team, and eliminate both memebers of the opposite team), and we will have the teams determined on Saturday. It will definitely be exciting! Find yourself a partner, or I can team you up with someone.

The neat thing is that if your team wins cvs2, you win the prize, and you still retain your right to go and win 10 games in a row in a different game and take the $10 entry fee rebate.(one other game only) :tup:

Isn't any tournament result quite predictable, if we already know whom to be seeded in the first place? Jwong and Sanford in a marvel tourney, isn't that just a give away?

Anyways, in any team tournament environment, the top players are going to take their team to advance. Even in a single tournament situation(ex. mvc2), what can we do to stop top players from advancing(ex. you)? Either beat them, or screw them over with some stupid things. I am sure we prefer to beat them instead.

If we do the ratio 1/1/2 thing, not much of a difference as in me take random ratio 1's and pass on to Byron(t.o) the ratio 2 sakura(also remember about the Groove, you need someone with the same groove to partner with)... same as me taking random character in mvc2, and leave you with a sentinel.

So, what we can do is to still try out the new thing, but separate Byron/Byron/Myself/Ray on different teams. Then we team Ray with the cove girl and I team with Tini, and that can be the first round match in the tournament. :wow: J/K You never know, your partner might just kick our team's ass and carry you to the finals :tup:

There are only 3 people whom use A groove seriously, (both Byron's and myself), so there will be a team consists of two of us for sure if we are to do it that way.

We will then do it in a best 2 out of 3 series, and double elimination.

Should we have the winning team members play each other to have the final winner whom will win the prize(which will be fun), or do you guys just want to split it instead.

Why Random select? Half the people who play the game only know how to use like about 10 characters(max) out of like 40, and it will be chaos when you(the seeded guy) get Sagat/kim/Rolento and the other person gets a Dan/Raiden/Yuri :tdown: .

If you guys don't like teams, then we will just make it single then. 8 people double elimination, 2 out of 3 matches. We will some how make it a 16 people double elimination, best of 1 matches before semi-finals, if we have enough people.

It was a fun tourney, especially considered the fact that we had it completed by 11:00pm. Close matches all the way and it was just intense.

Anyways, the result as follow: (16 participants)

Naw, all the guys in Team Brampton are buddies outside of the SF scene as well. Byron is actually registered on SRK under "Ultimate Rugal" but has maybe 2 posts at the most under him. I have no idea why he doesn't post though. He reads the strategy sections on a regular basis.

They unlocked titles for everyone this morning so I finally got to change my title. I didn't release the T5 DVD's because Issac Graham lost all the Marvel footage and it'd be pointless to sell a tournament set to US players if you can't get Marvel footage.

You should try marketing those DVD's to Europe, those guys there could learn a thing or two from probably pretty much any tournament videos. Plus the European dollar is worth more anyways.

Send me some cvs2 footage, so I can compare your team Brampton and Byron's level. I may come down there someday (bring Byron along)and kick you guys' asses. LOL :karate:

I don't know what the prize will be for this coming week, simply because the owner forgot to bring it last week.

What I know the winner of this week will get so far however is of course the rebate of entry fee, and half price of entry fee for next time, and owner's special prize. The Ultimate prize is you can brag about your victory over Ray for the years to come. :tup:

Byron, I doubt if MK3 will make its return, but I know as a matter of fact, that Tekken5 will be in the cove very early next year.

Jonhnson mentioned about a SUPER BISHI BASHI tournament, how many of you would like to participate in that? :wow: We'll do it during the Saturday evening, so you are automatically enter with the usual $10 for the fighting games night. (Only if we really want to do it though).

I have discussed the issue with the owner in the cove, and the conclusion to the prizes is confirmed:

There will be a total of 6 games(when alpha 3 makes its return).
Each week, we will do one mini tournament for one game.

1. For the winner of each game that particular week, there will be a refund of the entry fee ($10).
2. Next week's entry fee will be half price ($5)
3. A combo #1 from the cove - jumbo dog, medium slash, bag of chips

Now, here is the key part:
Every 6 weeks, when all 6 games' tourneys are done, we will find out who has the best winning record overall (you will get points for whatever place you get), then the final winner gets the big prize:

(for this first 6 rounds) ONE COPY of Capcom fighting evolution for PS2 (release day: today).

We will start everything from this week's mvc2, and we will re-do the Cvs2 mini tournament, so there won't be any bitching whatsoever. :wow:

Picked it up today.
Hauzer kinda blows. He is definitely no Sentinel. Everyone's saying that Jedah's rushdown is unstoppable, except IMO Anakaris is better. He's like Magneto. Better angles then Jedah, and Anakaris actually has air defense.

Oh well, it's all about Kenji and Karin.

Seems like the game was put together at the last second. No effort whatsoever. Kinda sad considering this is Capcom's last 2-d effort. Oh well. I'll still play it.

Anyhow i'll just go over some basics:

Ingrid is pretty much like a modified c-groove character. She's got safe fall, air block, dash, roll, super jump, counter attack. Her super meter has 3 levels and she has 3 supers. Sunburst takes up 1 meter, Sunshine takes up 2 meters, Sun delta takes up 3.

Street fighter guys got nothing special. Just a super combo meter. no dash. no air block.

Darkstalkers have chain combos (think morrigan ala cvs2). 5-level super meter and powered up specials by pressing 2 buttons (like EX in sf3). Guard cancel. one-hit OTG attack. You knock the guy down, then jump on him when he's down. air block.

Sf3 has parry. Universal overhead. And quick get-up. Also has EX moves.

Red earth guys can hold up to 2 stocks. They can break a stock to level up. This level up is permanent unlike N-groove. Every time you level up you get a little bit of life back and your power and stamina also increase. You can go up to level 6 and it carries on between rounds. Also some super moves are only accessable after you level up a certain amount. Also has ultimate guard, basically makes you immune to all attacks except throws for a small amount of time (think Super Armor). Also has a one-hit otg attack. air block.

Street fighter alpha has custom combos ala a-groove. Except if you miss, you lose your entire meter. alpha counter, roll-getup. air block.

Other notes:

Sakura got nerfed. Chun Li got nerfed.

Bison can do super psycho crusher after landing jump strong, strong... except everyone's got airblock/parry except for SF2 characters.

Guile lost sonic hurricane.

Hydron owns zangief.

Darkstalkers are mad fast.

Red Earth guys build meter slowly. Probably best to use a SF2 guy to charge and then change to Red Earth.

No Genei jin for Yun. Urien has Aegis Reflector except it's definitely toned down.

as for CFJ first day i got it i really wasint too impressed..it was exactly what i expected and absolutly nothing more...second day i like it alil more and got into it a bit learning customs with guy and shit..now the third day i REALLY like the game :) its very fresh..so many weird ass matchups

First of all, Saturday(Nov20th) is the mini tournament for mvc2.
Starts at latest 6:30... better let me know by tomorrow morning if you are going to be late. Every other fighting game is on Free play mode.

Then, Johnson... The owner said Bishi Bashi tournament is a "Yes", and we can do it next week when everything is prepared during the Saturday. However, free play this week just doesn't work according to the owner for Bishi Bashi. Let me clearify something... I am not working for the Cove, and I don't get paid for anything done, and I do not want to push too far on some subjects if I know I can not get the approval. But I will do what I can do to set up the best things for my friends regarding the arcade events though. :tup:

7. I have been using A-groove after the last Edmonton tourney, but according to Ray, my sakura's shosho is probably the worst among A-groove users. Bring your mas stick if I can house you, and I will show how to do perfect shosho, and bison's cc with the dreamcast control pad's analog stick. Perfect RC as well.
8. All unblockables can be done in the 3S machine in the arcade, can you do them though? :wow:

Yet another successful mini tournament, and I just want to thank all you guys for making it happen. Everyone who participated has made it exciting and fun for everybody else.

You've got to parry the whole shit, man. Even I can parry the first couples!! Parry a regular Sakura's fierce uppercut is not even difficult, but if you parry the whole shoshosho, then you will get this from everyone in the Calgary cvs2 group: :pray:

Note: the shoshosho must be done by Byron(t.o), because he can do the most hits and with best accuracy.

It's good that you start playing cvs2 again, try to parry my akuma's A-groove corner multiple fireballs next time. :wow:

A lot of the overpowered stuff from the previous games was taken out. Urien still has Aegis, but it's usefullness is questionable. Yun's Genei Jin is gone. Chun-Li's SA2 can still be done off of CR forward, except the timing has been shortened and you have to cancel the cr forward early or else the opponent will be able to block the super. Sakura's shoshosho does jack for damage and also jack for chip. And her hurricane kick automatically does the knockdown kick.

Hauzer is just a huge combo dummy it seems. His Jabs have no range... they're basically claw scratches. Roundhouse tail swipes (jumping, crouching, standing) are all good. He's a funny character to see in action. I'm sure some people will use him. Seeing Zangief put him in a spinning pile driver/final atomic buster is pretty funny.

Rose, Karin, and Guy all have easy customs (Rose having to use 2 buttons, Karin and Guy only 1). Rose's crouching medium punch is good.

The owner mentioned about free play for all games this week, but apparently it doesn't seem to work out this week. However, if anything changes, I will notify you all.

So again, fighting games night continue with ggxx tourney. Games night starts at 5pm, and ggxx tourney starts at 6:30pm.

BTW, all mini-tournament results will begin to be APEX from now on. There will be more positive changes made regarding the Saturday event to make it better for everyone.

Ever since running the Saturday event, I pretty much know everyone by name now.

Once Calgaryplanet.com is done with maintainence, I will put up a challenge with all other "fighting gamers" who either play at home or Eau Claire. The challenge will be for those new people to challenge the champion of every mini-tournament we have in a best 3 out of 5 series.

It will be held every Saturday, and those new-comers can issue the challenge any time when the champion is around. The champion defends his title, and if the new-comer wins, then he automatically get the entry fee rebate, possibly a combo#1 from the cove.

Ray, are you up for that? Also, whoever wins GGXX tomorrow will do that as well. What do you guys think?

Thanks again for everyone coming for the Saturday event, and those who participated and helped out in the GGXX mini tournament. I still can't believe that we actually had way more than 16 people that wanted to join GGXX. Honestly, there were two more guys(whom always play neowave) that wanted to join but they showed up too late.

Anyways, the results as follow:

Here is the GGXX Bracket. It's a little difficult to understand near the top left hand corner... If something's not right tell me and I will get it fixed (if anyone cares).

As for seeding for 3s... Assuming we're playing 16 people, 4 seeds is the maximum right? So in my case... Seeds would definitely includ Trung and Johnson.
