King of Fighters '98 Tournament ...and 2k2?

Alright, now that everything is getting seriously underway Id like to make some clarifications just to be sure were all up on track here.
Its going to be vital that everyone is able to use Mame32k .64, as that is the emulator of choice for almost everyone in the US.

The date of the tournament is the 26th. Matches and pooling should begin sometime around 3-4pm EST. This is a single day tourney for everyone that doesnt know. Say something if youre going to be late or anything, Ill schedule you as latte as possible, but if it holds up the next round of matches, you forfeit that match and will get thrown in losers.

I expect everyone to login to EFnet on IRC and join #kof98 and #kof2k2, respectively. For those unknown to IRC, get a client here www.mirc.com, fill out your name, connect to the server, and "/join channel" with the # included.
Matches will be standard best 2/3 until semis which will be out of 5. Record semi and final matches. I'll also take any that you record before that. There were some major desynch issues last time I played, so well see how that goes.

Hey hellsap remember who's hostin this me okay so let me explain the rules before you do your shit and please put svc on here if you are going to edit one of my tournaments into your threads. Anyway yeah The kof98 tournament i'm hostin along with svc. Kof2k2 i would host but hellsap post it first. Kof98 people or svc people you have intill this friday at 11:00p.m. (pacific Time) to sign up for the tournament if no one else signs up for kof 98 I will then if I must. Just please record theese matches will you. Oh and i've decided since the kof 98 tournament Is for mame0.64 you have to record the matches at the semi finals or finals you can record during the first round if you want. Here's how it goes it's the best of 2 out of 3 in the regular matches, then the semi finals 3 out of 5, and last but not least the finals finals thoose for kof 98 will be 4 out of 7 yall got that. This tournament will probally start during winter break cause i know some of you have jobs or have to go to school. This tournament though will be on a friday/saturday/sunday don't know yet which day it will be but I'll tell you and The tournament will probally be at emucation.com or electric dojo don't know yet. Also I want this to be a fair tournament so you have to put it on consle mode when you play kof 98 or svc for this tournament. LETS MAKE THIS CLEAR AND FINAL ON THE BOSSES THAT ARE BANNED no extra versions of characters you play them how they were made for that game do not use a orochi chris aginst a omega rugal. Rugal is allowed but NOT OMEGA RUGAL YALL know i'm talkin about rugal when you hold start. the only you hold start extra version characters that are allowed are kyo's version, ryo's version, Terry's version,AOF old school versions can be allowed, and the rest of the ff extra versions can be allowed. IF ANYONE USES OROCHI SHERMIE, OROCHI CHRIS, OR OMEGA RUGAL, then the other guy who used the guys that were allowed can x out and go into the next round. Have to go with Hellsap on this one, Rage. The only character who should be banned from both games is Omega Rugal, the other extra select chars are, and always have been, valid. It could be rough to get a lot of the old schoolers back (lost touch with a few of them), but here's the old schoolers who's names I can remember at the moment.

I need to practice up again, especially in 98. Playing 2k2 for long periods and then going back to 98 plays hell with your timing (2k2's system is much faster than 98's. In fact, with the possible exception to KOF:NW, which I haven't played yet, 2k2 is the fastest KOF system to date).

I have an essay tonight and 2 exams tomorrow, but after that I'll be free!

personally, I'm really putting your ability to handle a kof tourney, especially when you dont participate in it. I originally thought that it was a joke, hosting svc and ss4 to get some 'life' back into kaillera and snk fans... by picking the 2 of the worst games out there...
then you switched ss4 for kof98, while still leaving it saying "ss4"

So I broke off and started this tourney and while I will probably be needing help, as its breaking to 20's now (whereas yours barely broke 5). If you get out of hand and start whining and complaining as you are doing now, I will strip you of any moderation rights when we start doing this... whereas Mr. Big's help is easily welcome.

Please note : Im sorry to say this, but this 98/2k2 tourney is pretty much my tourney now, though because of your original involvement I would like to work together with you on this. But youre going to have to earn and deserve that privelege... so calm down.

I don't know...I played him in KoF2k and all he did was infinites. Sort of made the battle pointless. I'm not sure how good he is in 2k2.

Anyways, as much as I would love to join this tournament, I'm not sure if there would be a point...this game is generally dominated by the ability to hop, and my keyboard is unusually picky about hopping...the best I could do against hoppers is to turtle, because of this.

Heh, sorry had to get that out of my system. Now back on topic...

Yashiro (from Team Maniak) is pretty good. Great execution, but his defense needs work, though. He has a rough time dealing with situations where he isn't on the offensive. If you can keep him guessing (crossups are great for this), then he's at quite the disadvantage. He has a hard time with O. Shermie (and surely other zoning chars) as well, although I'm about the only person in all of Kaillera who uses O. Shermie regularly.

His Vanessa stood out as being nasty, but she's a real nasty char to begin with. He's learned the combos, but not the character. Much of what he relies on (and any person who uses things such as infinites) is muscle memory (ie, doing without thinking). Break that rhythm, make him think, and in doing so, you'll slow him down and trip him up.

If you have a grappler, and you have the timing down on their main command throws (Clark / Ralf's Super Argentine Backbreaker, Ramon's Tiger Neck Chancery, etc) you can grab her out of her dashes & teleports. Just don't turtle up, because it will spell your doom against Vanessa, who can switch high / low, or just break your guard with the f+C out of her teleport.

Something Hellsap and I were tossing back and forth was having a team Tourney as a thing on the side of the main tourney. Now, what do I mean by "team tourney".

Three players form a team, where they each use one character. Then using the 6P version of KOF 98 / 2k2, the team will go against another 3 player team.

We tried this way back in the day (some 2 years ago or so, maybe longer) and it didn't go as smoothly as we would've liked since some people couldn't make it, and as a result teams had to be reshuffled at the last minute, etc. In addition, finding a server that everyone has decent pings at isn't the easiest thing in the world. :bluu:

This is how the team tourney was set up back in the day.

1. Each team member chose a character and would stick to that char throughout the tournament.

2. A player couldn't be a part of more than one team. In other words, a guy from team A couldn't also be a part of team D.

3. Each team would create a team name to represent themselves in the tourney, and submit it along with the nicks of the players and the chars they were going to use.

It is really cool to create your own team, complete with team name, theme, etc. Especially in <98 when your characters were on the sidelines during the match, reacting to the fight and jumping in when a char was in a mash throw or dizzied (forgot the command...hcf+P, was it?).

Anyway, it's an idea we were tossing around and may throw together as a side thing.

Hmm, his Vanessa is pretty good, but yeah, breaking the rythm down for him is not so bad since he likes to do similar patterns, so a simple snap into that pattern breaks his style. Been a while still, so he may have changed up. The only real problem I have against this guy is his Angel. Even if you see the stuff coming out, you can't necessarily counter it easily. Maybe it's bad to discuss about someone else's style when he's gonna enter the tournament, but hey, I want him like Uncle Sam.

Well, maybe not. I'm not sure though...I have maybe 6 or 7 go to guys, but I don't have a set team that I'm comfortable with right now. I'll probably use a safe team first game, and if I lose I'll counter with whatever team I think beats that person's playstyle.

Alright DJ Lindo sweeped, Willie lost to DJ, Roy was the winner of losers but lost to DJ in the first set, I lost to roy, and Vegeta(W) and Mr. Big(L) disappeared in the end. Everything else was ok, except 6-7 were filled with random disappearences and such.


Anyone feel like trying to do another one again, later down the road?
Since this one wasnt stable in the first place, trying two tournies at once didnt work as one went to hell and the other one was forgotten... Also more people showed up for 2k2 than for 98, which was wierd... Should look to doing just a '98 tourney later though. Maybe that will have better luck.
Big thanks to everyone who stayed through to the end, and those that helped out somewhat by getting everyone where they needed to be.

It sounds really familiar, but I haven't visited it for years. Yasakani had a site too...kofcartel I think, but thats most likely been dead for years as well. This is kinda like all those RPGs where civilization advanced and then just fell apart and dissapeared, and then the new heroes come along and use this 'old' technology thats way more advanced than their current technology, which is just trying to build back up to the glory days. I don't think they ever really succeed in doing so in the RPGs, just like you guys trying to bring back the old glory days of kaillera KOF. The most you can do is borrow elements from the past...

I have no illusions about some type of rennaisance happening, sites just help people check for updates, input files and rankings a lot easier. Keeps things more organized.

I made this chart based on every single details from Hellsap himself. The matches might messed up a little bit but it's not a major problem. Airthrow, your match against Mr. Big is not on the chart because that's a loser's match. Mr. Big and you lost in the winner's bracket and you two were fighting for the winner of the losers. Your match is not on the chart because the chart is only for the matches on winner's side, it says that on the top!

I'm really wondering how Roy got there...The Roy that I faced wasn't that good, and I won about 80-90% of the matches against him. Did this Roy guy use Chris alot (want to make sure it's the same one).

In the tourney Mr. Big OCVed me with his seth on this really shitty laggy serv, but he forgot to record, so we went to a better server and he pretended the first game never happened, it was a good match though.

The thing with lindo is that he sometimes doesn't bother to try...I was able to beat him a few times, but it was fairly obvious he wasn't trying. When he does try, he's fairly hard to beat (hops way too much and combos well).
