What with the Future of the RS comic being braught into question, I figgured I'd start a thread To talk about Why we like RS, why we'd like to see it in Comic form, etc...
I, for one am really looking forward to the RS Comic, and really hope (ohpleaseOhpleaseOhPLEEEEEEEASE!!!!) to see it become a reality.
I was already a fan of the Game, but What really made me a Super Fan Was the ill Fated French manga.
Back in 1999, a french Manga Publishing company named "Manga Player" had been releasing a bi-monthly Magazine of the same name dedicated to French Manga and Anime, in wich they would also publish some manga that would later be re-printed in book form. In the July/August'99 issue they started to print Junji Ohno's manga adaption of Rival Schools (Under the title "Justice Gakuen"), it ran for 3 issues in wich they published all of vol.1 and started vol.2, I waited impatiently for the next issue to come out, unfortunatly it never did, Sadly what had happenen was Manga Player had gone Bankrupt, wich meant no new MP magazine and no new MP books.
Months Later in 2000 the company was re-booted with a new Name "Pika". and all their old books were re-edited under the new lable, Sadly RS never made it to book form before MP went Bankrupt, so they must have lost the licence in the turnover, for it was never re-printed to this day.
A sad Tale is it not?
At least I'll always have the 3 MP issues in wich the Manga was published in.
And it would be a cruel fate indeed if the RS Comic got stopped before it even got started.
We must find a way to keep this project alive!

I first played Rival Schools on the PS1 around it's UK release date in 1998. What appealed to me about this title in particular (Other than the fact that it was like Street Fighter and had Sakura) was the compelling story that was built through playing with each character. As you used different characters you learned more about the conspiracy behind Justice School and learned how the feuds began.
Some may find the plot cheesey but I thought it was very well done and I think that it is worthy of comic adaption due to this. A comic needs a good plot, Rival Schools has a good plot and with it's fighting gameplay could get some decent action inside there too

Yeah I'm new here.Big Whoop. I love Rival Schools becasue Edayan is my Fav Capcom Artist. Also anyone who's played the US Rival Schools games is missing out on a lot. If you wanna know what I mean check this link out.
http://www.lunateia.net/justice/index.htm You may not feel the same way but that's how it's really supposed to be, and if that changes how you feel then about Shiritsu Justice Gakuen oh well. I just don't want them to screw up the book. They should take there time with it and do a good job.

I too love the characters, their designs, and the storyline of the Rival Schools series.
I was very excited when Udon got RS, plus I loved the Summer Special story. I can't wait for RS the comic to come out!
I love Rival Schools, I got into is very late though and I'm playing part 1, so far I've gotten all the endings except for Hyo, Hideo and Raizo. I'll go for Hideo today and save the other two for a rainy day.
I hope after the comic comes out part 2 s released on the PS2. I saw it once for the Dreamcast and I foolishly didn't purchase. Ah well. I'll go back to looking for it after I finish part 1. But on the regular I rotate a bunch of games so it won't be anytime soon.
As far as the comic goes, yeah, I'm very excited! The Summer Special has gotten me thirsting for more! Batsu vs. Hyo, you know you want to see it Udon Style! :nunchuck:

No way man Hyo's gonna get a whoppin' by his kid brother Kyosouke, that's the way it's gotta be done, a story wouldn't be a story without a good old traditional brother or sister bitch fight lol.
I've got Project Justice, it's good but really the only tweaks are graphically, not many move changes, few new characters and it lacked the bonus content of the first game which was a shame. Good story though.

Yeah, the two brothers throw down with Hinata in the background saying, "Stop Fighting you're brothers!" That's classic, LOL!

Hahaha, yeah I figured that would happen eventually. I'm aware of the dislike between that site and rivalschools.net. Ahh well my mistake. Either way it's got tons of offical art. But hey still can't wait for the Rival Schools Comic, and now I'm off wheewwwwwww. Nice Icon by the by.

A sad Tale is it not?
the same will happen to Udon Comics if they'll decide to publish Rival Schools...
I hope they will not do that mistake. it would be a complete failure, with sales worse than Darkstalkers...
Rival Schools was never a cashcow of Capcom, neither will be the comic.
sorry to say that, but it is a market economy we are living in.

no need to freak out apathy, he has a point.
only core fans know about rival schools, or such games as power stone, they have a very dedicated fan base but also rather small.
think about it, udon is still desperately trying to market SF with only little success. erik says himself that he needs to reach the larger fan base who arent reading or just unaware.
think about it dude, if people are unaware or just not interested in picking up SF the comic then how much success does rival school really have?
dont get me wrong, im glad its gonna get published and all and i hope udon the best with their business, but it looks like an uphill climb to me.
the megaman franchise is as popular as SF yet the comic flopped miserably...and yea its cuz dreamwave messed it up real good... and if u think it mite not happen to udon, u should read their last few issues.
*ouch* yea i know that was uncalled for. but im just saying can udon really focus on 3 different capcom titles at once...with one already slipping?
RS may not be cashcow, but its still a star and far from dog.

I have to agree with martinitolove on one thing though, Rival Schools won't be as recognised as Street Fighter or DarkStalkers and therefore there is the sad possibility that it won't sell as much for that reason. But I'm often wrong so let's hope I am this time.
Well think about this.
The last all new SF game came out when? (1999)
The last RS game came out when? (2000)
The last all new DS game came out when?
The last all new MM game that wasnt Battle Network or X came out when?
Maybe these comics dont do tremendously, because of 1) The terrible shape the comic industry was in and 2) The franchises these comics are based off are dead basicly (cept MM although the comic wasnt based off X or BN)
Maybe UDON should think about funding an anime based off a Capcom title, with anime being as popular as it is now. I know Manga Entertainment funded both of the SFA animes (although they wanted a sequel to the SF2 anime, but instead got SFA, weird huh?)

I already stated in another thread that RS is going to have a harder time than the other 2 due to it's obscurity.
That's not Udon's fault, and if Udon makes a quality product, it will find support. It's not going to be an instant hit, but if it's good, more people will hear about it and pick it up.
I dunno where people are getting that SF isn't selling well because it is.
Darkstalkers went back to press TWICE! Once on issue one and then AGAIN with issue 2 which is a very good thing.
Expanding the readership is a constant thing that all publishers are concerned with. That's always been their goal. More readers = more money. It's just good business.
It doesn't mean a book is doing bad, it means they want it to do better.
And I'm not "freaking out", that kid is just a world class idiot that shoots his mouth off without a molecule of common sense.
Just support the book. Don't sit here posting about how the comic is doomed before it ever comes out, because then it might never come out.

Apathy-Inc is right, darkstalkers and street fighter are doing very well, and hopefully we will see a good ending to both these great series and I will go out and say it-MartiniLove is quite the idiot.
Tas wrote-"The franchises these comics are based off are dead basicly"
I disagree with Tas on street fighter being dead.Have you ever heard of a game called CAPCOM FIGHTING EVOLUTION ? Or perhaps a little game by the name of third strike , that is played by millions and tournaments all around the world to this very day? How about the anniversary collection, or Sota and High Dream doing figures on street fighter and sota doing darkstalkers? Howc about the eternal challenge book? I could go on. You have no real arguement on this one. I really hate it when someone makes an ignorant comment like that. That comic wouldn't sale well,or that series will flop or those figures won't sale. YOU DON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY. TAKE THE MUPPETS FOR AN EXAMPLE. ARE THEY DEAD?FAR FROM IT.PALISADES PULLED OFF 9 WELL SELLING SERIES.COME ON.
For someone who know 'so much' about street fighter, you seem to be missing some important things on it,erhaps you don't get out much.
I am not trying to be harsh,I am just stating MY OPINION ON THE MATTER.
To quote Tom Cruise from the Movie "Born on the fourth of Rival Schools Day."
"THIS THREAD IS CALLED THE LOVE FOR RIVAL SCHOOLS THREAD! IF YOU DON'T LOVE RIVAL SCHOOLS THEN GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS THREAD! I LOVE RIVAL SCHOOLS!"
Now I'm off to get Hideo's good ending.

Rival Schools would do well IF proper advertising, and the retailers finally 'wake up' and see how well the capcom properties of street fighter and darkstalkers are selling and they order more copies. If something is selling ut,wouldn't you bump your orders up?Retailers are the most stupid bunch of people in the world.

Transformers made a comeback.
G.I. Joe made a comeback.
Hell, even the Thundercats came back.
MegaMan NT is a pretty popular kid's show and manga. I'm pretty sure the kids would eat it up if they made a Megaman show based off the original series.
Isn't SFA2 the movie due out in June? www.animenewsnetwork.com
I think the comics don't sell like X-Men/Spiderman because 1.)SF is not X-Men/Spiderman and 2.) The sad shape of the comic industry (there's really no denying that)
But they do sell well, all things considered: Crappy history of the SF comics, Udon is a smaller company, little to no advertisement in the comic's magazines like Wizard.

Okay lets look at this.
Combine all the sales from all the recent SF merchandise (games, figures, comics, etc) it probaly dosnt even total a million dollars.
Also is SF still as popular as it was when SF2 was new? No
Is SF still as popular as it was when SF3 was new? No
Is all this SF "revitalization" stuff anywhere near as popular or doing as good as all the 80's stuff thats made a comeback? (GI Joe, Transformers, He-Man, Thundercats, etc)
Then there's the big question. Is the SF franchise as a whole actually doing well at this point and time?
Oh and CFE has NOTHING to do with this. Its not a franchise game, its just a new Capcom fighting game, if you even want to call it a new game. More like a Capcom only MUGEN game, or Capcom trying to make up for the money they lost developing CFAS.
Transformers made a comeback.
G.I. Joe made a comeback.
Hell, even the Thundercats came back.
Yes I know, see above. Thats what Im talking about, but has SF's "comeback" done anywhere NEAR as good as those?
Look at the comic, toy, etc, etc, sales for those compared to SF's comic, toy, etc, etc, sales, they dont even compare.
One thing that would REALLY give SF a much needed boost (in everything) is a new animated series, but considering SF already had two series, and both sucked, doing a third one is very risky.

okay,I don't know the status of the sales right now and neither do you.But COME ON,TAS. Have you been around to different forums lately? The street fighter buzz is STRONG. Third strike I would go out on a limb here and say it has become MORE popular than its first release. There are third strike tourneys everywhere.Trust me,I have been to my share of them lately.
I feel personally that street fighter is strong now. Jerry from Sota toys has said personally that the figures sold WAY better than expected. Trust me,its big, not as big as Marvel, but not THAT far off.If they were to make a GOOD canon street fighter anime series or even a good anime movie folowing the games pretty well(like Udon is doing),then I think that it would get even more popular. It needs a boost, and it is getting it now.Capcom should step in and advertise however they can to get the figures, games, magazines, controllers, books etc. about street fighter and darkstalkers.

Well Said Apathy.
Right now Udon needs our Moral Support, Granted the odds may seem stiff, and some would make it seem stiffer than they really are. We just need to belive that if the Product is good, it will sell.
If Anyone can pull this off it's you guys!

I'm with ya on that too! Rival Schools has been one of my favorite fighting games of all time along with both Darkstalkers and Street Fighter! And with the Rival Schools comic coming, i'm giving Udon my full support!
I'm glad that both the Street Fighter comic series and the Darkstalkers one are having good success, and while i'm glad that the Street Fighter comic series is doing an excellent job and still has a long way to go, I still need to grab my hands on a DS comic! ^^ But I will definitely be glad to see a Rival Schools comic out because I will get to see another one of my favorite video games come to life in comic form! ^^ To me, it'll be great to see everyone in RS, and see how the guys from Udon will do with the Rival Schools comic! ^^
Hell, maybe once the RS comic starts picking up steam, maybe Capcom might re-release RS and Project Justice! ^^ And of course much more merchandise will follow! ^^
So as for Rival Schools, i'm supporting Udon with it 100%!! RIVAL SCHOOLS 4 LIFE!!

I, too, love Rival Schools. I just wish Capcom would stop removing the minigames from them.
Hideo totally owns in the first game, but there are a lot of fun characters to use. Bowman's team-up move always felt satisfying as a finisher. :) What I like most about RS (besides the gameplay) is the character designs.
I hope Capcom makes a third game in the future, and I would definitely support Udon if they make a RS series.
