what you need to do is unplug your modem for 6 hours or so, then plug it directly into the Xbox, and it will work.

I had a similar problem when I first got XBL.

Same thing happened when I tried to set up my wireless network. You just need to powerdown probably and then powerup one unit at a time, backwards from the Xbox. So Xbox, then router, then modem. The modem has a single IP address and until you get the router to distribute IPs, they won't match what the modem is trying to communicate with and you won't get a signal.

So powerdown, plug everything in, then power up in this order: Xbox, Router, Modem.

Should work after that.

^yeah.

What I would do is, disconnect my modem tonight before I went to sleep. Tomorrow, just hook it up DIRECTLY to the Xbox, and it should work. Do this first, leaving the router out of it, that way if it doesnt work, you know you have a problem w/ the router

Then if it works, the next night unplug it again, and the next day hook up your router.

Umm, a modem reset is between 3-6 minutes and not 6hrs, lol. Same with the router.

"So powerdown, plug everything in, then power up in this order: Xbox, Router, Modem."

I tried this but it still doesn't work. I powered everything down, and waited for 15 minutes then powered everything in that order, and it still doesn't work.

Here's the story.

I was using my computer in my room, browsing the web, and my 3 year old cousin was mashing random buttons on the keyboard, and the internet broke or something because it hasn't worked on that comp ever since, but the comp in my living room(the one I'm using now) works fine and dandy. The DSL modem and router is in my room next to the computer that the internet doesnt work anymore. I thought it was a router problem, but I'm not sure anymore. Before, I had a Netgear wireless router and it was working fine until my lil cousin did her magic tricks with the keyboard. And I bought a new Linksys G wireless router and it still doesn't work. So something is either up with the computer or my DSL, please help me, I need my live!!!!!!!!

Ok dude, I want you to take my advice. Tonight, before you go to sleep, unplug the modem, router and everything.

Tommorow morning, plug JUST the Modem into the Xbox. No router or anything. If it doesn't work, something is seriously wrong. If it does work, then I am right.

As for dudes who say it takes 6 minutes to reset: I am telling you, some people it takes 6 hours. Yes their service/modem is shitty whatever, I know what I am talking about.

Afro, I guarentee this will work for you. I had the same kind of headaches w/ live when I first got it.

Once you do this 'test' so to speak, I'll give you some suggestions on how to get the router to work (I have the linksys too and I believe you might be having the same prob I'm having) But one thing at a time.

My modem resets as soon as I unplug the power cord and plug it back in. And I don't have a router so I do this quiet often... if It took 6 hours for me :crybaby: i would buy a router.

Mine too but I had an old modem that used to take 6 hours back in the day.

umm you dont know what your talking about, it NEVER takes more than 10 minutes ever for any modem any connection out there to power cycle a modem, if you have a DSL, power cycle your modem for 3 minutes, if you have CABLE, power cycle your modem for 1 minute, direct or router, no matter what. it all depends on the compatibility with your netowrk and set up, if you have a router that is not compatible with live then you wont be able to connect unless you configure the network ports in the specific configuration. if you have direct, hope to god that you have a compatible modem that plays with live. but preferably use a linksys router. never ever use a system link ehternet cable either. if you still getting a DNS error with a direct connect, and you have cable, clone the MAC from your PC, if you have DSL, then get your correct PPPOE credentials and enter them in your network settings, thats all, if any of you have any questions or need some assistance setting up your live, then ask the one and only xbox live TS GURU.

AFRO: this is what you need to do, contact your router manuf, and getthem to open these three ports in your router UDP 88, UDP 3074, and TCP 3074, power cycle all devices, first your modem, then your router, plug your router in after 20 seconds and then your modem after 1 minute, and there you go

A lot of older DSL MODEMS needed a firmware upgrade in order to work with XBL, as I found out one weekend at a friend of mine's house. Notice I said MODEM, and not ROUTER. Your Linksys router will work out of the box with XBL, especially if you just bought it not too long ago. They all come full open for ports nowadays, so opening a port shouldn't be it.

BTW, we also received a DNS error on DSL with my friend's modem before we upgraded the firmware on it

Blah blah whatever dawg, I'm telling you, it used to take my old modem that long. My ISP even told me it took that long. This was wayy back in 2002, on a modem that was AT THE TIME discontinuted, and on a shitty as fuck ISP. And dude, don't ressurect old as hell topics just so you can be an asshole.

I think that Afro guy is online. I already owned up on someone who was claiming to be him.

*edit* lol its a day old, still old as hell IMO cause it was on page 2. Nobody looks on page too, unless they are really, really bored
