I was just wondering what everyone's opinions were for the tiers in ST...

I think it depends on Turbo 2 or Turbo 3 really. at least in my playgroup.

The tap-throwers have a party.

Chun Li / CE M Bison are the reigning characters in my playgroup.

Incidently, how does anyone stop the irritating CE Bison Psycho Crusher with his last bit of his "toes hitting you" when you are getting up. Have tried blocking front, uppercut.. but if still can't beat it. Reckons it's unblockable.

Ok, here's my list of the tiers in ST.

Tier one(elite)

Balrog, O Sagat, Ryu, Dee Jay

Tier two(outstanding)

Sim, Vega, Chun Li, Akuma

Tier three (good)

Ken, Guile, Bison, Gief

Tier four (decent)

Cammy, Fei Long, T. Hawk, Honda, Blanka

it's like half that list is flipped upside down. CE Bison it unstoppable...really (unblockable crusher and traps). WW Guile is a jab dizzying, four hit redizzying, turtling champ. Akuma should just not be listed cause air fireballs change the whole game mechanic. And Dee Jay is just a poor mans guile.

Calm down, I said Bison from ST, not from CE, THE LIST I mentioned was solely for ST, not for the past SF games, but the lone exception was O sagat because he's too good. =)

Akuma is TIER TWO, let's see you guys use Akuma and beat me...he has nothing on me.

afro: uh o.sagat is a part of ST ROFL. and akuma is 2nd tier? you are really dumb. hes been fucking banned for over a decade cuz he has no counter, he beats everyone for free. an average player can pick akuma and give a top player at the least, a serious run for their money, or win, cuz of sheer bs tactics.

tops in ST are ryu, o.sagat, rog, vega, bison, sim. all IMO, but those are the most used characters and get the most wins.

Vega, bison, and sim are not tier one, I can beat them with little effort.

And how is Dee Jay not tier one? He's unstoppable in ST, I bet I can pick him and beat all of you guys.

i know nothing about ST, but it seems that in all the different game threads, the ones who make ass comments are the ones who've just registered as members :lol:. well, most of the time anyways. on the 3rdStrike forums, it's usually the n00b coming in and saying this guy is tops or this combo is possible when it isn't even half true. by reading everyone else's posts here, seems like my logic is bang on :lol:.

And ST and AE are not my main games, but saying ST Akuma is not top tier means you lose at logic. Sorry about your luck.

Well, just because you guys are too scrubby to beat Akuma, doesn't mean he's tier one. I've played againt plenty of elite akuma opponent players and they have nothing on me. All you need is the right strategy and bingo, he's yours. Just because you guys aren't legends and don't have legendary strategies, doesn't mean he is tier one, bottom line.

Anyway yeah online lag changes the whole game around, not just slight shifts in tiers.

But yeah you should never TRULY listen to someone about tiers, they are always fluctuating/debatable.
I try to make my tiers as general as possible, so here goes:

And these are OFFLINE tiers btw, rarely played online so I know nothing about abusing lag.

God Tier:
Akuma, yes he is the best, yes he is banned in tournaments.
He is SLIGHTLY overhyped though.. he's not unstoppable against ALL characters (Balrog and Vega are almost 50/50 with him).
Gief is the only character who he is truly unstoppable (10-0) against, but yeah most characters do get taken out quite badly by Akuma..

High Tier:
All the "top tier"/good characters. Every one of these characters has been called top tier at some point, but I do admit O.Sagat and Balrog stand out a bit.
O.Sagat, Balrog, Vega, Bison (all 4 bosses are known to be top tier, cannily), Ryu (new + old), Ken (new + old), Deejay (very underrated, but imo he's Guile on steriods), Chun Li (another underrated char, unless you've seen Bro Chun/Ohnuki), Dhalsim (seems crap/laughable at first, but just watch Jason Cole!),

Not so high tier:
The characters that are "good" (lets face it no one in ST really sucks, everyone is DEVASTATING in the right hands), but aren't a candidate for top tier.
Blanka, Fei Long, Cammy, Zangief, T.Hawk, Guile, E.Honda,

I've only taken ST characters into account, admittedly I'm not exactly too hot at AE.
All I know is that WW chars are bannable and CE characters are cheap (especially CE Bison, and CE Ryu).

Finally, someone that agrees with me. Dee Jay is UNSTOPPABLE in ST, bottom line.

He can beat Akuma, Ryu, O sagat, Akuma, Vega, Bison, with ease.

He is the most UNDERRATED player in the game, and his X-Factor combo is rediculous, it takes your WHOLE ENERGY BAR. How is Dee Jay not tier one? Idiots.

Cripes, you've played plenty of elite Akumas and they had nothing at all on you, huh? Man, you must be good. Either that, or you're making it up, because I've been playing ST for quite some time and I've never met more than one guy who actually spent the time to learn everything about Akuma; everyone who bothers playing the game realizes he's ridiculous and hears he's banned and gives him up automatically. No one becomes an expert with him because, for one, you don't even really need to break him down to do well, and also because you won't be able to use him in tournaments and most casuals anyway.

In any case, everyone agrees the top tier includes AT LEAST Old Sagat, Balrog/Bison, and Dhalsim. Some people say Ryu or Vega/Balrog or Chun should be up there too. Here's my personal tier list (first time I've ever done a tier list, somehow... I think). I'm not including Akuma, 'cause, come on. ST Akuma.

Top: Old Sagat, Balrog/Bison, Dhalsim, Vega/Balrog

Higher: DeeJay, Ryu, Chun Li, Bison/Vega, Ken

Mid: Fei Long, Zangief, Guile, E Honda

Lower: T Hawk, Cammy, Blanka

This isn't like some other games where the tiering is constant, though, by which I mean that ST is all about character matchups. For example, Dhalsim is top tier, and Cammy is low tier, but Cammy does very well against him. Say you pick Guile, and someone else picks Vega. Vega counters Guile, and you lose. So you pick Honda, who beats Vega, and you win. So your opponent picks Guile, who beats Honda, etc etc. And even with counter characters, Zangief can still beat Sagat, and so forth. There is no 3S Yun/Chun/Ken or MvC2 Storm/Sentinel/Cable/Magneto or CvS2 Sagat/Blanka in this game. Well, except for Akuma hehe.

I agree DeeJay is really good, I like him a lot, but come on. I've never seen a regularly-landable DeeJay combo that deal 100% damage. You're not talking about that crazy, highly contingent corner ground-crossover combo thing, are you? Because that's just stupid. And combos that sometimes dizzy don't count, because this game isn't like Third Strike, for example, where moves do set amounts of dizzy and once a certain number has been reached, you're dizzy. In ST, dizzying is based partly on chance, whereby it becomes more and more likely you'll be dizzied, but not certain. And anyway, if high-damage combos are the factor here, why is Fei Long not top tier? Rekkas will eat up at least a third of your life every time. And why is Akuma not crazy? That guy can dish out the punishment like no one else.

ST is one of the more balance fighting game by Capcom. Gief can beat old Sagat ..... you just have to work twice as hard as Sagat

It's close impossible for Gief to beat Sagat on LIVE between two equal skill player. Gief would run into the sea of fireballs becuase of lag

Like I've said before, you guys have never seen anyone like Afro 21. I know combonations that you guys have never even seen and thought existed. When I get my Live to work, I'll show you guys first hand how legendary I can be.

Yeah, I bet the tiering changes for online play, but I don't have LIVE or the XBox version yet so I don't know how it would change exactly. Seems to me like Gief would actually be better though, since a tick-breaking reversal would be near impossible. Or maybe ticking into SPD would be more difficult... We'll see.

Zangief can do very well against O.Sagat in the right hands, Kuni Fundada's Zangief handled Alex Valle's O.Sagat in the Evo finals with a little bit of patience, and as soon as he got in GGPO Sagat. He also beat Justin Wong's O.Sagat, one perfect, one very high health.

I also own the 2005 EVO DVD. Lag completely change this game. If Kuni played against an average O Sagat on xbox live. He will lose becuase he probably walk into 5-6 firballs per round.

Man, Zangief sucks online. SPDs are so much harder to do, seriously. Maybe that's partly because I only have a pad right now, but still. Ticks seems really difficult to operate. Plus, the pad makes lariats next to impossible. Guess I should just get an XBox compatible stick already, huh.
