View Full Version : my brief online play thoughts

i finally decided to try out online play for myself now that AE has come out, and these are my initial thoughts on it.

i use the linksys wireless-B game adapter with my DSL service, and i've experienced mostly games that range from a little lag, to alot of lag.

the bad lag games include quick screen pauses or freezes.

the very little lag games it just seems like the motion and button inputs are delayed by a fraction of a second.

so whether playing against friends in my city or playing on their direct wired setups with our best connections, i still noticed that online play has an input delay. all moves and button presses have to be done slightly earlier than normal, and imho... it takes away from "real" gameplay, and i don't care for it much.

the input delay has been noted by others as well, and even jumpsuit mentioned it to me when he and i were playing on the arcade machine last week. he said that on the arcade machine he was messing up because he was doing all of his attacks too early, especially on jump-in attacks. he's been playing online so long now that he's altered his game timing to compensate for the online delay.

i guess that's ok for people who prefer online play and that don't mind the altered gameplay, but for me it just makes the game less. less acurate, less precise, and less competitive. for instance, having to execute anti-air moves well before the airborn opponents are even within the(normally) correct range... that just creates problems and screws up gameplay imo.

so my 1st impression of online play is that it's simply good for a bit of fun and few kicks, but it doesn't really satisfy my competitive SF fix.

peace,
cmutt

no real point to playin online if you have good competition in your area. everyone already knows that theres slight impute lag.

Some games lag more than others as you pointed out. Using Linksys ( I have one too) doesn't help. You're better off wired up directly to your modem.

I don't know where you're from but I presume US somewhere. Keep playing peeps and find out with whom you get really nice connections with and keep em on your FL. That way the difference between on and offline play will be minimal. I'm in the UK, my connections generally are very good (except US and Japan which vary greatly) and therefore I don't find much trouble adjusting online to offline.

Btw, don't forget that 3S on Xbox (offline) runs at a faster speed than the arcade version. You may need to adjust to that too!

Heh Cmutt knows all this stuff very well, and he has some very good local competition.(H-town baby) I think he was just stating a general review for people who are interested in possibly buying the game but never experienced live play.

I can honestly say that I've rarely encountered lag in this game. But I feel that wireless routers will induce some lag into the game, hooking direct to the modem (as previously stated) may get rid of the lag.

Oh and if you're relativly new to playing people with skill, you will get owned (I know I do)

I made a whole thread about this :http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83929

That shit is unplayable w/ the linksys wireless router. Wait until you play w/o it. Holy shit. Plus dude, you have a sick internet connection, mine isn't even half that and I now enjoy lag free games.

Once you experience lag free like that you will not go back.

The slight button delay he is talking about is normal. He is just stating that it messes with his offline game. Shit if I lived close to cf I probably wouldnt play online either.

seriously how long can it possibly take to adjust back to offline play. if you ever get a big tournament comin up just stay away for online play a couple of days before the tournament

ok, after trying direct to router, not using the sf anniversary stick, and playing against jumpsuit who's in the same city... i must say that the gameplay was indeed better.

jumpsuit told me that the SF-AE stick seems to have more input lag than other sticks, and from comparing different sticks he's absolutely right. we're not sure if it's because the AE-stick has the Xbox connection split-out from it's PS2 connector or not. other multi platform sticks have the connections split out in a y-adaptor format. well, who knows.

anyway, the online experience was much better, no noticable lag, and the input delay was minimal on sticks other than the AE-stick.

so i guess i have to say that online play can be pretty damn good, at least with good connections.

I tried to play earlier in the day but it was surprisingly laggy and I quit. However most of my play comes at late night, sometimes like 2-3am and I can say that its usually almost completely lag free.

What sticks are you guys using?

Anyone have trouble with X Arcade sticks online?

I am tempted to get the game but dont want to go through
the whole input lag issue I had with Capcom vs Snk.

Are there better sticks that can reduce the input lag?

I too have changed my views about online play. My Xbox is normally wired to my linksys wireless router (The wireless part I only use for my laptops), and I was experiencing horrible lag in AC. It has run perfectly set up like this for Halo 2 for a long time now, so I was confused. The moment I unhooked the Xbox from the router and plugged it directly to the cable modem, my eyes were unlocked to the sweet pussy that is...lag free street fighter. And then, after getting my ass kicked (lag free ass kickings rule!) by Cracka J about 15 games I realized that I need better competition to make me better, so you good fuckers better start playing me.

BTW, I'm using the Pelican "Real Arcade Universal" with switched out Happ internals, and I get no input lag at all.

I use a Pelican real arcade with Happ parts and Cox cable 4mb down and 512k up with a Dlink router and I get no lag.

Yep, I have the same connection, it seems like Street Fighter and Linksys are battling. Once I kicked Linksys out, I've had no problems since.
