I just got this game a week ago and I've been spending some time in arcade mode so I won't suck TOO much. I do realize that I am going to be smacked around like someone's bitch at first. I just wanted to know if anyone has some suggestions for me about which groove and characters to use so I won't look like a TOTAL newb of a cheap bastard. I'm pretty good with most characters(especially Ryu, Ken, and Akuma... but who isn't) the only characters I don't like are charge characters since I am having trouble getting used to the longer charge time for charge characters. I'm open to any suggestions.

1) Don't drop after you lose. It's an asshole thing to do. Even when you are mad. I, however, do find it justifyable if you drop if the lag is so unbearable that the game comes to a stop numerous times.
2) If you play in console mode, don't use an EX grove. Any moron can chain combo, and lag just makes it easier. Use real groves. The game is more balanced and fun that way. And, for that matter, don't use EO mode.
3) Play the same person who kicks your ass many times. Learn his tactics and counter. If you stop after one match, you won't learn much.
4) This is just my opinion. Stay away from the Shotos (Ryu, Ken, Akuma, etc). I'm tired of seeing people use them. I enjoy a match much more when people mix it up with Maki, Eagle, and other characters whos potential hasn't been tapped.
5) Learn that EVERYTHING can be countered. Rolling is NOT safe. You can be thrown out of rolls and you can throw others out of rolls. Punish roll abusers.
6) There are other moves besides super and special moves. Use your pokes. Also, don't use use FP and HK, they tend to be slow and can be stuffed easily (Sagat, Athena, a couple others excluded). Others will punish this.
The rest you will learn.
Just be a nice guy and have fun.

Nah shotos can teach you many things. If you use shotos, you can learn how to rush, how to use meaties, how to link into super etc. But that's not to say you can't do that with other chars but it's just easier with shotos. Use C Ken or N shotos in general.

KyPen pretty much nailed it.
besides the EX thing. don't listen to them.
EX makes for a much more fun and refreshing experience.
don't listen to what these old geezers have to say, they still wear diapers. they haven't grown up yet.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I didn't want to look like an asshole or an idiot right off the bat(even though I AM an idiot when it comes to this game). I just don't agree with ImagineVC though. I do think that using EX grooves can be fun... but there is a fine line between having a good time and not respecting your opponent. I also was wondering why I never see anyone playing any SNK characters besides Terry, Joe, or Mai?

You will. I have been seeing alot of Hibiki and Raiden lately. I see the occasional Geese. I play Yamazaki sometimes (poorly).
To be honest though, most people play Capcom characters because they are:
1) more familiar with them (everyone has played Street Fighter, not as many have played KOF.
2) there are more top tiers in Capcom (Blanka, Sagat, Cammy, Bison, Sakura...)
