In my teens, I used to hang out at the arcade with my classmates. One of my classmates had a friend that also came to the same arcade. We shall call him L. He's a good player and we have good games there. The SF machines were removed from the arcade, and the scene died out. I lost touch with L. I knew him from other places as well because my town is a small place and we used to play SFII at eachothers house ages ago, but I have not seen/spoken to him for about 6 years. In the meantime, I have moved to a different country.

So yesterday I decided to play some SF, and this new player with 0 matches accepts a challenge, he plays like he knows the game (combo's, zoning etc). He talks through the mic and asks me where I am from. He tells me where he is from as well. So I'm like: "hey I'm from the same place man, but I have moved countries".

Turns out this guy is actually "L" and we talk to eachother again after 6 years through Xbox Live. It was fucking crazy - HSFII re-uniting old friends - I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone or something.

Xbox Live - Bringing people together...

Funny, I thought that Live was supposed to help you make enemies.

Good stuff.

That's awesome, you should tell the Xbox people. Maybe they will throw money at you guys to promo them.

I can see the tagline now "It may or may not happen to you, but it happened to these guys"

Holy shit! Pretty cool man. One of my buddies I met at the arcade I am still friends with after 15 years. Crazy.

I had the same thing happen to me as well... There was one guy who I'd play against in weekly tournaments at The Break. Around 2000 the dude totally dropped from the scene. No cel and no IM made for a total lack of conversation. Last week I hop on Live and play against some random dude for a couple of games. We played, I wrapped it up, and went to sleep. I woke up the next morning and saw that I had a reply on my moblog (geekpics.textamerica.com) from the guy I played last night! It turned out to be the same guy I knew who I played at The Break all those years ago. We met up again that night and talked on our headsets. We're going to try to set up a meet in the next couple of weeks to play in real time and bullshit.

I was also part of another reunion of friends in my old Halo 2 clan. Turned out that two members of my group went to the same high school and were friends back then. They didn't see or hear from one another in seven years. We must've played for a good month before it even came up.

It's stories like this that make Xbox Live so damn awesome. You never know - the person on the other end might be someone from your past.

No, critics are afraid games will make us become social, because we're all desensatized to violence and are about to kill some high school bullies the second we start interacting with people.
