Can anyone tell me if the d-pad on the pad any good? What I mean by that is:
1. Is it durable?
2. Do motions commands come out smoothly?
3. How simular is it to the version 2 sega saturn pad?

it feels like a 6-button Genesis Pad, to me at least.....
can't tell you how it compares to the saturn pad, but for me, after some 'breaking in' it works quite well......
some people don't like it, but I don't mind it one bit, it has become my 'default' pad for playing all games......but especially fighters....

but is the pad durable? Can the D-pad take a beating or is it easy to wear?

I've used mine for SFEX3 since the launch, and that was what? 4-5 years ago? So yea, I'd say its pretty durable. Or at least a lot more durable than the actual PS2 itself lol

Uh yeah. Wrong pad dude.
I find the pad to be kinda wobbly at times, I wish it were a little tighter. Plus, the start and select buttons get in the way of mashing sometimes. Otherwise I really like it.

I'm going to have to give this pad a big thumbs down. Like the above poster said, the d-pad has a wobbly feel to it, it feels more or less like a really cheaply produced Saturn pad. I used my Ken pad once, then promptly stored it away with my other SF memorabilia.

SHUT UP CLAYTON!
The pad has a bit of a learning curve to it but otherwise it's a fine pad and I've used it in a couple console tournies now and managed to execute just fine. I don't use characters with Tiger Knee motions though (except for one case) so I don't know how it rolls in that regard but everything else came off fine.

dude it sucks, ive gone through 3 of these things, and all of them have sucked. I was hopeing that maybe they were just breaking(as i kept takeing them back) but after the 3rd one it was liek yea, these arent breaking they are just peices of shit.
The start button is in a horrible place, the buttons stick in genral, and the pad is gawd aful. Its nigh impossible to do 360s on them. Also did i mention what a peice of cheap plastic this thing is? Only good thing its for is if you need 6 buttons and are to poor, or dont play games enough to warrent you buying a arcade stick.

The default PS2 controller is a piece of shit. I can't play any fighting games on it -- the digonals are iffy. Can't block. Can't do a goddamn fireball. Never mind dragon punch or supers.
I ended up taking the old, old PS1 controller and use that to play fighting games. I think I may have to give up fighting games for the PS if ever that controller breaks down, because I can't find it anymore in stores.

Imo is a piece of shit and it´s not much better than the original PS2 game pad.
For the PS2 game pads fighters: there´s great news because SEGA will release in Japan on March 24 for 2280 yen the Sega Saturn pad
Here´s the news:
"Sega announced they will release the Saturn Control Pad for PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 24, for 2280 yen. The Saturn Control Pad is identical to the classic Saturn controller, it is ideal for playing the Sega Ages titles such as Phantasy Star Generation II, Dragon Force and Fighting Vipers"
"Sega will also release the Virtua Stick for PS2 on March 24, for 5980 yen, which is a remake of the classic Saturn joystick"

.. I got connections? Sorry my bad. I don't know how good they are. I thought you meant regular PS2 controllers that you can use on SFAC.

Wha? My stock Dual Shock 2 works just great (all of them). Maybe your one controller just has a defect or something.

or you could just PM me if it ever broke down, I got one or two of the old stock PS1 controllers (pre dualshock), laying around that I don't need/use.......

Stick > Ps2 pad > random pads.

It blows. Don't spend money expecting the best D-pad ever or anything, and you'll get resets all the time because of where start and select are. I wish I would have saved my $25 and waited for these Saturn pads that will actually be sweet.

Well, you KNOW it's gonna be personal preference.. but I don't mind them.
It's the best "pad" IMO. Better than GC, XBoX, or DC anyhow.. Of course joystick is best, but i have no problems doing stuff on PSX pad.. well, most stuff anyhow. I can't shoshosho or tachi 720 well on a pad, but everything else is cake. (360s, DPs, TKs, etc).
Although I prefer PS1, pre-dualshock/analog. Too clunky, heavy and those analog sticks are useless anyhow. I've never broken a D-pad.. but I have known some PS sontrollers to break.. more specifically the buttons get shitty. ESPECIALLY the shoulder buttons.. have a tendancy to stick sometimes.
I have no idea how you guys are hitting start+select accidentally. You must have enormous thumbs or something.

It just happens. All the people I know play claw-style, not thumbs -- how can you kara w/ one finger.

They felt like second nature to me. I can't play SF with shoulder buttons, it just doesn't gel. They can take a beating also. I sold mint tho' since I'm getting them for the Xbox. They re-designed them like the ps2 ones but the moved the Start and Select buttons to the bottom center.
And it's got a space for the mic.

Luckily for me, I have jab+short on R1+R2. :)
Besides, you could always just cheat and map cominations to one button or something... :)
Just another reason why joysticks are better I guess. :/ Pressing complex button combinations can be a pain in the ass.
..I never could get used to the claw style.

I never have problems with the SFAC Anniversary pads, if that is what you are talking about. I use "claw-style" maybe when I'm trying to do a complicated kara move or combo, but otherwise I just play as if it were another pad, if I was going to play claw style I would get a stick, why would I use a little pad? I have never, not once, pressed the start or select buttons by accident, none of mine have broken, and the pad is really responsive. It takes time getting used to it, as commands sometimes come out even with just a little touch, and sometimes it negative edges it if you don't press it fast enough. Other than that the pads are great, and much better than the standard ps2 pads to play with.
I can't play SFAC with a stupid XBOX pad, and if I do I can only do the most basic of basic stuff. Hopefully these pads will be good, and better than the ps2 ones.

Co-Sign. Easier than on stick. Raging demons are also cake with that config. I'm married to my dualshock2 as the weight I get from the stick is toptier.
And the SFAC is a nice collectible, but the stick sucks ass. I have more luck with a keyboard than with that piece of plastic, besides the paint tends to peel if you ever use your nail while playing. And don't you dare to mash or you'll a)Pause the game or b) get your thumb raped.
I like mine a lot. It felt cheap at first, because it's pretty light and the paint seems like it might come off easily, but the D-pad is really smooth and comfortable, and the buttons work well. I agree about start and select - I've had more than a few resets in TTT because of them - but they're not much of a problem for most games.

I use an old PS1 controller, too. I started using it when SFA3 came out. Things has seen many wars, and still kicks. At least till a few months ago. It was getting really hard to block or do diagonals, not to mention button presses were getting rather iffy. I tried to break in a new pad, but it wasnt the same. In the end, I went with a compromise: I opened up Rei (the old controller) and the new one. While I kept the broken-in Dpad and buttons, all the little rubber contacts from the new pad went to Rei. It made a HUGE difference. Now I dont miss anything anymore, Pad feels nice and tight, but the dpad is nice and broken in, like i like it

i did hear, btw, that the pc versions of those saturn pads had a d-pad that was somewhat inferior to the original saturn one. might be the same for the ps2 version.
