I've been told that whenever I use a roll groove, I roll too much. So when is it okay to roll because everytime I do, someone bitches (cough-anticon-cough  ) so I just wanna know when I can roll and NOT piss someone off.

Who cares if they bitch about it? Rolls, with the possible exception of Iori and Kim's ridiculously fast ones, are pretty damn easy to punish if you roll a lot, as others say you do. It's kinda like bitching about throws, it's not the other guy's fault that you dont know how to stop it.

Its ok to roll to dodge, mix or cross something but if you bust out a random roll from across the screen and throw or super and connect thats some laggy bullshit.

Aren't people allowed to dodge with the S-groove? :wgrin:
I roll, but I don't do what Mr. SNK describes above. You back my ass up in a corner: I roll(though Zojitzu still finds ways to keep my ass in it  ). Super coming my way: roll(again, this can be countered with a well-placed throw or crouching fierce kick, or if the tail-end of a super hits you, or if you roll into it).
Roll away, but do so with caution.

The only rolls that really get to me sometimes are rolling high priority moves like flash kicks and rising tackles, and even those are ok as far as I'm concerned as long as you do something else and mix it up so at least it's somewhat fun. I roll to get out of corners sometimes although a good player will box you in and wait for you to roll so they can throw you back into the corner. I don't really see rolling as any different from the benefits you get from non-roll grooves like parrying, super cancels dodging or jding. I think it just gets annoying when people use it as the only way to start a combo, throw someone or get around the screen. Play like that and I probably won't stick around because I'm not learning anything from losing.

meh... it's always laggy when we play... and you don't just roll... it's usually followed by a rat which is not fun. Taking Rat damage 3 times a round cause of lag

Dont roll trough someone and dont RAT those are unstopable in any kind of lag. Other rolls are ok with me.

I guess I unconsciously do the RATs. sorry again. I'll keep that in mind next time we play. Oh and I turn off everything on my computer except AOL so that we might have a better connection. Guess it doesn't work then.

Don't get me wrong tho... Rolling is ok. I don't personally use it, I just don't like it can be easilly abused.

I like rolling and dont have a problem with anyone rolling. If someone rolls a lot it is quite a lot of fun tossing them about with throws. During a laggy match RATing becomes a top move along with jumping kicks with the likes of vega, Blanka, Mai etc. I from time to time abuse roll, but if I get a laggy connection then 99% of the time I quit after the first match. I play this game offline now more then I do online. Depending on who I am playing offline sometimes I can abuse roll for a easy win that will piss of the opponent and hopefully make him want to learn how to counter rolls more effectivly. Against certain players roll is only used once or maybe twice a round. Previouly when playing SmoothCat online even under slight laggy conditions he managed to punish nearly every roll I ever did, This forced me to play different and I did.
My Opinion Rolls are cool  , it's the lag that sucks

I dont know Decoy what do you think is better?? Roll Super or roll activate!!!?!?!?!? Both are fukin power houses!!!

Iron Activ8 is definitely better. Roll super leaves you vulnerable if the opponent happens to block. Roll Custom is too powerful!
Topic- Roll whenever you feel like it. If you die, good. If you don't, I'll bitch about lag.

I'd say .... if your opponent can move when you roll, then you shouldn't roll.
Roll to avoid cross ups. There's a lot of people cross up happy on Live. Don't let them get a free jump in.

I think I'm starting to control my rolling urges when I use C,A,N...roll only when necessary. That's why I like K groove; doesn't give me the option.

Bigger reward and instant gratification if you roll super. Roll activate is very good but you then have to perform the custom and I'm just too lazy for that. :razzy:

You can roll and do whatever you want, but when it comes down to giving out props... peeps that roll get the big  Makes me laugh so hard when people have a good record, but then I see how they get all their wins.. rolling scrub style!!  If you want to get good then play k groove. If you wanna be a bad mofo, then play p groove. (Just don't use the super cancels 'cause that shiet is gay as hell)
Take it from the guy that could own up 99% of xbl players if we money matched offline when I say that XBL players get total disrespect from arcade players!
Only person I still give props to is Smoothcat, Citiofbrass, Conflicts, and SonicBoomSRK. These guys deserve their rank on XBL.

And for the record (pun intended) my record sucks on XBL so there. I think we played maybe once before a long time ago. Hit me up next time you see me on so I can roll super you to Bolivian.

Actually before I started playing on XBL, I always used K Groove. I only started using C, A and N because at the arcade I didn't want to waste my money with a groove I didn't know how to properly play with. And activate always seems to fuck up for me. When I use Sakura and I activate in front of their face, lag just lets them hit me so that kind of pisses me off.

A, C, & N groove is good only if you incorporate roll cancel. If you don't then people who play k groove will stomp on you! Since you can not practice roll cancel on XBL, you might as well play k groove because it is still extremely effective at the arcade. Come on, free supers when hit? Can't beat that!! :nunchuck:
Since you can not practice roll cancel on XBL
sorry if this is old, but found out last night from gl0ry you can cancel the roll without the effect of the roll. gl0ry does rc's on xbl. i tried some with eo in training. i think it works. but you might mean practicing beyond execution, then excuse this reply.

True that, and that's my main weakness. I'm going to start doing that before they land from now on.

I usually go into a combo after I roll and to be more specific this is usually with Akuma.

I can roll cancel (except for 360s and ken's short funky kick. God those are hard) for the most part. Well at least in training mode haha I can do qcf, qcb, rc electricity, and charge moves. I haven't practiced in a while though. Plus I lost my PS2 CVS2! No more Roll Cancel practicing for me = (. And i don't think RC is THAT essential to all the roll grooves...of course RC is useful but playing XBL with no RCs forces me to become better at using the Groove's intended features. I just wanna learn how to use C,A,N. I'll incorparate RCs into my gameplan after I get a solid base for all my grooves. And also I know this one guy who uses A Sak at the arcade so I need a counter team for that GC CC. K <<<< A so I thought I should learn how to use the other grooves too.

i used to abuse roll since C was the first groove i learned a bit, then i started realizing that it was easily countered and predicted. I jsut kept gettin cornered raped and GC. Getting used to rolling is a msitake without any RC. So i switched to P and it didn't work out to well, my parry time sux, so i went with K. K is great, specially on GC. Down at the arcade i only started winning after switchin from C blanka/guile/bison to K with my team. And JD helps alot. :)
Also, i learned that trying to roll out of a corner is useless when fighting a good oponent, i barely roll anymore. When you roll you kinda lose ur edge and get thrown back in a corner, so i think its best to stand a strong ground if your Defense and dont get desperate and try to roll, its what counter atk is for. ;)

You have never truly realized/utilized the power of the roll. Thats ok. Not many do. That's why there are few High Rollers. Know-what-I'm-say'in?
Ask some dude named EVIL. He showed Daigo the power of the roll.

Ken's short funky kick is actually the easiest to roll cancel! My friend taught me how, even though I don't rc. Just do the hcf motion and press (jab+short) twice in a row super quick. This works because the machine registers the short instead of jab when pushed at the same time doing the move. Now you can abuse his deadly rc move!!
